Contradiction Starring Paul Darrow & John Guilor Out Now For iPad!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
We’ve been waiting, and you have too. Finally, the day has arrived – Contradiction, starring Paul Darrow, Rupert Booth and John Guilor, is available to puchase for iPad!
Basically this is an interactive movie and alongside Paul Darrow (The Silurians, Timelash, Blake’s 7), Rupert Booth and John Guilor (The Day of the Doctor) you’ll find a cast of talented actors and actresses whose job it is to, well, basically tell porkies. Once you spot the contradiction in their accounts, you progress through the adventure…
Contradiction is the first fully interactive, all-video murder mystery adventure game. Everything you see is live-action video, with real actors in atmospheric locations. You decide where to go, where to investigate, who to speak to and what to ask. As the story unfolds you’ll meet new people, witness new events and discover new places.
You investigate with Inspector Jenks, who has been assigned to the case of a student found murdered in an idyllic English country village.
You meet several characters during the game, most of whom you can visit as often as you like. You can ask these characters about any item of evidence or information that you’ve collected along the way.
The aim (and name) of the game is to spot contradictions in what they’ve said. By consulting your notes and pairing together two contradictory replies, Jenks will interrogate the character and they will be forced to reveal new information, allowing you to progress further through the game.
To complete the game, all you need to do is reveal all the contradictions. Sounds simple? Well, we’ll see…
Incidentally, the man behind the project, Tim Follin, has produced a great soundtrack and recommends that players use headphones for “a more immersive experience.” Good advice!
Now, if you’re new to the whole subject of Contradiction, then we have some treats for you. First of all, there’s a CultCast with Tim Follin and John Guilor that you should listen to, in which they tell us more about the game. I’ve also taken a look at interactive movies for MakeUseOf.com, which features Contradiction. Finally, John Guilor and Rupert Booth recently appeared on the podKast to chat and there are a couple of mentions of Contradiction in there.
This game basically heralds a new era in gaming on the iPad. Interactive movies, lengthy video games with actors appearing throughout rather than as voices, are now possible, as proved by Tim Follin. Contradiction deserves your support – don’t miss out!

Doctor Who Returns To Spain For Series 9?
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It looks like Doctor Who is once more returning to Spain!
Spain does offer some incredible vistas, so it’s good to see the show going overseas again.
Director of Photography, Ali Asad, let the cat out of the bag via Twitter, stating: “Going to Spain on a location recce for the DR” – DR being code for the show (placards with this on are frequently attached to road signs in Wales to direct vehicles with equipment to filming locations).
It wasn’t all that explicit at first, however…
We just had the first production meeting. It's going to be amazing. Probably the best episode ever.
— ali asad (@AliAsad1110) January 10, 2015
Two days later, Asad spilled the beans.
Going to Spain on a location recce for the DR.
— ali asad (@AliAsad1110) January 12, 2015
Asad is working on two episodes for Series 9, although naturally we know very little else about it. Basically all we know is that it’ll star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, the opening episode will be called The Magician’s Apprentice, and that debut – written by showrunner, Steven Moffat, guest will star Paul Kaye. Asad studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, where he first began his fascination with film and started his career by working on adverts and music videos. And yes, he’s previously said he’s a long-term Doctor Who fan so is over the moon to be working on Capaldi’s second series at the helm of the TARDIS.
Famously, Doctor Who filmed in Lanzarote for Planet of Fire – the introduction of Peri and a sad farewell to Turlough – and headed to mainland Spain for The Two Doctors the following year. Further shoots in Spain are more recent: A Town Called Mercy saw Almeria double for the Wild West, and the snowy climes for Asylum of the Daleks were also found there, just over the mountains! Finally, for last year’s Kill The Moon, the Doctor returned to Lanzarote!
Do you think Spain is doubling for another alien planet? Or – shock, shock, horror – might it actually be Spain? Where else would you like the TARDIS to land? City of Death was a popular overseas shoot in Paris: could France offer another great backdrop?

Harry Hill, The Avengers, John Barrowman and Time Lord Bigamy
Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
It’s time to put on makeup, It’s time to dress up right, It’s time to raise the curtain on Kasterborous’ News Blast…Yeah, it needs more syllables but what we don’t need more of are special celebrity guests including: Peter Davison! Lily Cole! The cast of The Avengers! Harry Hill! And errm… Peter Davison! (Again).
When Harry Hill Went Doctor Who Mad
Back when he wasn’t busy not being Matthew Kelly on Stars in Their Eyes, comedian and collar enthusiast Harry Hill had his very own, very unique sketch show on Channel Four in the UK called, surprisingly, The Harry Hill Show.
Other than bringing the majestic Stouffer into the world, the show also once had Peter Davison as a guest star in a reference heavy, suitably deranged Doctor Who themed episode. So if you have ever wanted to see the Fifth Doctor perform Pulp’s “Common People” (even if you didn’t, you defiantly do now), Davison reassuring a Cyberman that it was nothing personal, and a full cast rendition of “Disco 2000″ (also Pulp) set aboard the Enterprise then check out this clip…

Avenging The Avengers (No, the real ones)
With the sad passing of influential screen writer and producer Brian Clemens, it’s time to get reacquainted with some quintessential cult drama with the newly released The Avengers – The Lost Episodes: Volume Three from Big Finish.
Julian Wadham, Anthony Powell and Lucy Briggs-Owen once again play the central characters, John Steed, Carol Wilson and Dr Keel in more adventures whose TV versions are now tragically lost in time.
With guest stars including Miranda Raison (Spooks), Jacqueline King and Dan Starkey (Doctor Who), and Robert Duncan (Drop the Dead Donkey) it’s a loving recreation of four further stories:
“The Springers” – Written by John Whitney and Geoffrey Bellman, adapted by John Dorney: Steed and Keel go undercover to try and crack a prison escape route.
“The Yellow Needle” – Written by Patrick Campbell, adapted by John Dorney: An attempt is made on the life of Sir Wilberforce Lungi, the Prime Minister of an African country on the verge of independence, and Steed and Keel attempt to expose his enemies.
“Double Danger” – Written by Gerald Verner, adapted by John Dorney: A dangerous attempt to discover a cache of stolen diamonds goes badly wrong, and Keel is captured by a criminal gang.
“Toy Trap” – Written by Bill Strutton, adapted by John Dorney: Keel is charged with keeping an eye on the daughter of a friend. But it soon becomes clear that all is not well at her place of employment, a department store in London…
Produced by David Richardson and directed by Ken Bentley, The Avengers – The Lost Episodes: Volume Three is available to buy now on CD and Digital Download for £25.00 and £20.00 respectively.
The Doctor Who Dynasty?
If we consult the fabled Doctor Who tapestries we can, if the mood takes us, determine the exact point where, as historical scholars The Spice Girls commented, two became one… or we could just ask Peter Davison.
Ahead of his stint hosting the Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular in Adelaide later this month Davison spoke briefly about how his daughter, Georgia, and David Tennant started dating after the pair met shooting 2008’s The Doctor’s Daughter.
“We’re starting a dynasty, I think: the Tennant/Davison dynasty!” he said. “They didn’t start going out for some months after they did Doctor Who — it was a kind of slow-burn on the relationship. They became friends on Doctor Who, and I seem to remember her bringing him along to see me in a show called Spamelot in London … but they weren’t officially going out at that point. I remember her complaining that he kept dragging her off to theatre shows, and she couldn’t figure out why.”
He also revealed that he rewrote parts of the ‘not awfully good’ BBC Doctor Who Prom script which swayed the producers to offer him a role on the tour – plus the small matter of the 50th anniversary. Looking to the future, he also had encouraging words to say about his namesake Peter Capaldi: “I love Peter’s performance — I think it’s got great gravitas and a little grumpiness, I love the idea that he’s not quite sure if the human beings are worth bothering with.”
Time Lords Marry. But To How Many People?
Steven Moffat has responded to a fans enquiry regarding the Doctor being an alleged bigamist.
The fan, probably Tony Ferrino, questioned the validity of the Doctor’s marriages to Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe and River Song, given that they’re all technically now dead, although he could just time travel back to when they’re still alive to see them.
In the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Moffat said: “Mrs Who No 1: Dead, I presume? I suppose she must be. Think about that for a moment. He never, ever mentions her, never discusses her. But he’s not a bigamist on that score. Mrs Who No 2. Elizabeth the First. Well, they definitely got married. And then he never went back. Hard to excuse the old devil, on this front. Frankly, she deserved better. But does it count as marriage if the marriage is, erm, unconsummated?”
Well perhaps not in the legal sense but again he never went back and yes poor old Liz did deserve better.

Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor
He continued: “Mrs Who No 3. Marilyn Monroe. But can we trust this information? I have a suspicion it never really happened… Again, not guilty. Mrs Who No 4. River Song. Ahh, now there’s one! A point that no-one seems to notice is this: in ‘The Wedding of River Song’, there is no wedding, and River Song doesn’t get married. The Doctor never whispers his name to her, and is, in any event, miniaturised inside the robot replica of himself (which even by bloke standards, betrays a certain reticence about commitment).
“Of course, River swaggers about the place, calling the Doctor her husband, but, well, she would, wouldn’t she? … I can’t swear River and the Doctor didn’t misbehave when we weren’t looking, but I don’t think bigamy figures here. Besides, I bet River got married about 428 times. So there you go. I think he’s in the clear. But who know what’s coming next…?”
So apart from playing with the Queen of England’s heart is the Doctor in the clear? It’s difficult to forgive his behaviour with some of these non-committal unions – after all, it was he who instigated the potential marriage with Marilyn with the line ‘come on Marilyn, get your coat’ – even if it was some sort of festive Vegas style shotgun wedding, he has some responsibility to annul it.
And is his ego so fragile that he would make up the Marilyn story just to tell it? I’m not so sure.
Lily Cole Keeps On Acting
Actress, muse, academic, entrepreneur and now the face that launched a thousand ships, Lily Cole – guest star in 2011’s The Curse of the Black Spot – has been chatting to the Radio Times about her role as Helen of Troy in poet Simon Armitage’s stage adaptation of Homer’s The Iliad – The Last Days of Troy.
Speaking about her role as a supermodel siren in the Eleventh Doctor episode, Cole said: “I remember sitting in the make-up chair being painted green all day…I remember looking quite good being green.”
It’s rather fitting that one of her most well recognised performances should also be in the shade of colour her political allegiances are leaning towards – she has already had an audience with Green MP Caroline Lucas – but she won’t be easily swayed to give her vote up.
“I think there should be more Greens. That’s my feeling,” she said. “I haven’t committed to it yet because I am investigating it still. But they are the only ones I don’t feel totally disillusioned with right now. I might shortly became one… I’ll let you know.”
It’s this same level of seriousness that she brings to her current venture, impossible.com, a site where people can post their wishes in a bid to encourage small acts of altruism without having to spend any ‘greens’.
So it’s fitting that in this adaptation, which began airing on BBC Radio Four and is available on the iPlayer now, focuses on the politics, rather than the spectacle of the sacking of Troy. “It was amazing to see so many elements of human nature and the human psyche – from a construct of a few thousand years ago – that are still really evident today,” she said. “And that’s really quite depressing. We haven’t evolved at all. We are still doing the same thing. It’s so obvious in the play that no one wins and the war is tearing everyone apart and everyone suffers – so why are we still doing this? It’s so obvious it’s wrong.”

Barrowman’s show can be heard at 6pm every Sunday on Magic.
Big Bang Boom
The Big Bang Theory – the second best thing Chuck Lorre did after co-writing the theme tune to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles – has gone where no sitcom has gone before (if you ignore all the others) and made a Doctor Who reference in last Friday’s episode.
The clip is from Season 8 Episode 12, “The Space Probe Disintegration”. This isn’t the first time the Doctor has been mentioned by Sheldon and the gang: “The Bakersfield Expedition” (S6E13), “The Proton Transmogrification” (S7E22), and “The Justice League Recombination” (S4E11) to name a few have all made references to the show.

Fifth Doctor Sweater Competition: The Winner Announced!
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Last month, we gave you the chance to win a Fifth Doctor Sweater, part of the ever-expanding range of Doctor Who products from Lovarzi. And we have a winner.
It was a very tough choice; we were really impressed with the amount of people who entered, as was Lovarzi Director, Maninder Singh Sahota. And the winner is…
Kaitey Blair, who commented, “5th Doctor’s trousers and jacket would be great:) He is my Doctor & I would so love to wear them to the symphony spectacular in May :)”
Congratulations, Kaitey! While we were all jealous that you’re going to the Symphonic Spectacular, it just felt right that the sweater goes to someone who not only will be wearing it in the presence of the brilliant Peter Davison very shortly, but also someone whose Doctor is that cricket-loving celery-wearing alien!
Please email Christian over the next week to claim your prize – christian@kasterborous.com – and don’t forget to take a look at Lovarzi’s chart and let us know what size you want.
As we say, it was a hard decision to make; there were some great entries (as well as jokey ones – right, Castellan Spandrel? Missy’s knickers, indeed!) and special mentions go to:
Parkin76 (“I’d love a Season 21 Cricket jumper for the 5th Doctor as it’s markedly different from the brilliant jumper you’ve just produced and would complete my 5th Doctor costume! Keep up the great work – it’s really appreciated!”); Gruff (“Surprised nobody appears to have mentioned it, as it was my first thought, but how about a copy of the jumper worn by the Brigadier? He probably wore a few different versions so maybe the one from Battlefield or The Five Doctors“); Joe Roche (“The 3rd Doctor’s jacket/shirt combo from The Green Death!”); and mcribbie (“Either a season 15 scarf or a season 12 cardigan. Although replicas of Tom’s other waistcoats would also be cool (Zygons plaid, Weng-Chiang floral, Kroll Paisley). Basically, Fourth Doctor cosplay items”).
Don’t forget that you can order the Fifth Doctor Sweater from the Lovarzi website or Amazon UK, alongside a whole host of Doctor Who items (including the Fourth Doctor scarves), and Sherlock scarves.
Thanks to everyone who entered.

A five disc set in a deluxe book packaging, The Fourth Doctor by Gareth Roberts (£40.00 physical, £25 download) includes two adaptations by John Dorney, The Romance of Crime and The English Way of Death. The English Way of Death
The Doctor, Romana and K9 arrive in 1930s London to return some overdue library books. They plan to take a rest after their recent adventures, but Romana detects a distress signal from the future and the Doctor is attacked by a suffocating green mist.

Review: The Eleventh Doctor #03
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
And suddenly, we’re in the middle of a story arc.
It seemed, when Titan Comics’ Eleventh Doctor series began, we would be in for single-issue storylines; however, just three issues in, it’s become clear that SERVEYOUInc isn’t a one-hit corporation for the Doctor to contend with, but instead will trouble the Time Lord throughout time and space.
Personally, I’d have preferred more time for the Eleventh Doctor and Alice Obiefune, his new companion, to run across the universe together, having fun, before a major arc hits home ala Bad Wolf. Instead, SERVEYOUInc is a big player already. That’s not necessarily a bad thing – it’s there to grip readers from the off – but it does feel somewhat premature. I suppose it depends how many issues current writers Rob Williams and Al Ewing have to tell their tale.
What He Wants… is the first of the series to be written solely by Williams, and drops the TARDIS in Mississippi, 1931. It’s a great setting: atmospheric, dark, mystical. We’re thrown straight into the adventure, with the Doctor possessed in a Dockery plantation, surrounded by similarly-eerie locals. It’s a good opening which puts the reader onto the back foot.
Unfortunately, the disjointed narrative hampers the tone: it all seems a bit rushed, and the threat is too sketchy. There’s not enough time to explore the setting or the enemy (maybe that’s intentional) or the characters. And that’s a big shame because the story does have a lot going for it.
There’s plenty of mystery and the Doctor is written beautifully. You can really picture him crashing through the doors of a huge barn, yelling “Hellooo Mississippi!!! Gimme the blues!!!” – only to be confronted by a threatening crowd with glowing eyes and mouths. Similarly, there’s a nice helping of humour: I particularly enjoyed the Doctor’s revelation about The Beatles’ famous appearance at the Cavern Club in 1961. Alice, too, is built upon, especially her relationship with her Mum. I didn’t think I’d like Titan introducing new companions – I wanted more from the Ponds – but Alice is easy to like. That’s one of Williams and Ewing’s biggest achievements so far.
The Doctor takes Alice to see one of her Mum’s idols, a pop star called John Jones, before he was famous. Naturally, he’s a huge disappointment.
This is followed by a fantastic gag which is sadly undermined by a revelation about Jones – one which should be important but instead gets muddled with the rest of the story. So, too, does a historical appearance from blues musician, Robert Johnson.
The resolution looks nice but is ultimately a cop-out.
But this all sounds rather downbeat. In fact, The Eleventh Doctor series continues to be entertaining and intriguing in equal measure. What He Wants… is perhaps a slight misstep in an otherwise strong series. Issue 3 is average, that’s all. We’re in for a fun ride, that much I’m sure of, and as such, What He Wants… earns the right to be part of your comic collection.

Sir John Hurt & David Walliams Voice “Save a Choking Baby” Film
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Time for a slightly more serious tone on Kasterborous now. Sir John Hurt, the War Doctor, and David Walliams, guest of Series 6’s The God Complex, are among the voices on this amusing-yet-serious film instructing people – not just new parents – on the method required to save a choking baby.
Along with David Mitchell and Johnny Vegas, this CGI animation from the St John Ambulance is intended to save the lives of those very small people who might put something inedible in their mouths in the early stages of their quest for discovery.
Pen lid, marble, princess and jelly baby have had enough of being a hazard and they are here to show you the correct technique to save a choking baby. Read more about the campaign and view resources for parents at www.sja.org.uk/sja/support-us/
Parents told us that over 40% of them have witnessed their own baby choke. And when we quizzed them on the first aid, we found that over four-fifths don’t know what to do in this situation… this heart-warming video shows how easy it is to save a choking baby’s life. Please share it far and wide, so that as many people as possible know some first aid.
You’ll find more videos, we’re told, by subscribing to the St John Ambulance YouTube channel, although at the time of writing no new material is available.

Amazing Cine Footage of Tom Baker From 1979 Found
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Long lost home movie footage of Tom Baker from around 1979 has surfaced on YouTube, in which the Doctor Who star makes a public appearance at the London Taxi Drivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children in east London.
Recorded on an old cine camera, the footage doesn’t have much in the way of audio other than an atmospheric music soundtrack that has been added by the uploader. It’s all very haunting, and strange seeing such a video clip, harking to times past, when few people had portable cameras capable of recording footage like this. And yet all most of us can do is send clips into You’ve Been Framed.
I digress. I love this. Evocative, charming… it’s good, isn’t it?
What do you think? And do you have any rare footage of any Doctor Who stars lurking on old 8mm or 16mm reels in your house? Let us know!
