Dalek Fails To Exterminate Jimmy Carr & Guests On The Big Fat Anniversary Quiz

An exercise in banality it might be, but the Big Fat Quiz on Channel 4 has been running for a wholly unlikely 10 years. This fact was celebrated yesterday evening with a special “anniversary” quiz which went through the motions of having the most “popular” guests on to basically repeat the same old nonsense.
A rambling cacophany of cheapshots and cliched, tired retreads of previous shows (with guests fulfilling “roles” based on their public persona with little imagination as to the wider relevance of their new-found ignorance), it seems likely that this particular Big Fat Quiz will be repeated ad infinitum on Channel 4 and its various digital clones over the coming months and years.
Yes, you may now weep.
However, those repeats will be graced with with this rather amusingly posed final question from a Dalek…

Doctor Who 5th Most Time-Shifted Show On US TV
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Great news from TiVo – Doctor Who has been confirmed as the fifth most time-shifted show on cable TV in the USA!
Figures have just been released today, showing Doctor Who beaten only by Orphan Black (also BBC America), Nurse Jackie, Rectify and Portlandia.
(Interestingly Arrow – which co-stars John Barrowman – is the second most time-shifted broadcast show.)
Here are the all-important cable TV time-shifted figures for 2014:
Rank
Network
Program Name
Episode Count
% Time-shifted
1

91.2%
2

10
89.8%
4

Portlandia

89.4%
5

88.8%
It’s worth noting that 17 episodes have been screened in 2014 of Doctor Who on BBC America, so this figure includes four from previous years that have been broadcast as repeats.
Figures such as these provide yet more evidence that the show is enjoyed by people who are not tied to the whims of the schedulers; Doctor Who fans have long been au fait with technology, whether it be enjoying episodes on vinyl LPs, VHS and DVDs, digital downloads or enjoying interactive content through their digital TV system. BBC iPlayer was launched on Christmas Day 2007 with Voyage of the Damned as a main feature, after all.
What’s the most interesting way you’ve viewed Doctor Who?
(With thanks to Joe)

Doctor Who Review Of The Year: 2014
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
So, that was 2014, the year in which Doctor Who moved into an exciting new era with the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor, a move that shunneed some of the more human characteristics of his three predecessors for a more “classic” approach from actor Peter Capaldi.
Also, Missy.
But were these the topics that got Kasterborous readers clicking? Was 2014 really the story of the CyberBrig, an ineffectual Doctor blundering through his two part finale at the behest of the most unlikely Time Lord returning villain reveal, or was the real conversation taking place on different topics in Doctor Who fandom? Before we get to the 2014 memories from some of the Kasterborous team, here’s a collection ofour 10 most popular articles from January 1st to December 31st 2014, with some results that may surprise you somewhat…
10. Sylvester McCoy Knows Who The Next Master Is
Back in March, when we thought that the new Master would be Charles Dance, Sylvester McCoy teased fans at the Newcastle Film and Comic Con with the news that he knew who had been cast as the new batty Time Lord incarnation and that they would be ‘Very, very scary.’ Looking back, it’s not a close match; also, Sylvester apparently said “he” so perhaps he was misinformed… or perhaps someone else was originally cast, Penny Carter-style?
9. Doctor Who Sites Produce A Great April Fools’ Day
Continuing the theme of the Master’s return, April 1st saw a slew of rumours revealed as jokes, as both Peter Capaldi’s Doctor and a returning Arthur Darvill were claimed to be the new Master in various April Fool’s jokes from around the web (and at least one of these was taken as fact by a couple of less reliable news sources!)
8. Series 8 Goes Into A “Raw, Different Direction”
At the end of December 2013, Steven Moffat claimed that Doctor Who Series 8 would quite different to those that have come before, noting that it was necessary: “It happens on every show – you get good at it and ‘good at it’ is the enemy in the end.”
7. Doctor Who And The Curse Of The Porn Parodies
It wasn’t just April Fool’s Day that kept fans chuckling in April. We brought a new porn parody with the non-PC title of “Doctor Whore”. There’s little more to say on this; the post was remarkably short, with no filler. We suggest you grab the bull by the horns if you want read the article, one of the most embarrassing produced by this usually upstanding organ.
6. Doctor Who Gets New Four-Legged Friend!
Of particular interest to Kasterborous readers in 2014 was the news that the Doctor was to be joined on his travels by a new four-legged friend, a cat called Fuzz-E. Yep, we’re back with April Fool’s Day. Special mention should go to Drew Boynton who conceived and produced this post after I’d already decided to skip the annual trickfest – it was good enough to convince me and seemingly entertaining enough for you lot!
5. Barrowman’s River/Jack Spinoff Dreams – What Do You Think?
Captain Jack has been missed from Doctor Who since the travesty of Miracle Day, and frankly it’s about time he was back as an occasional companion for the Doctor once again. John Barrowman has other ideas, however – he wants Jack to team up with River Song for some sort of entendre laced alien shooting fun. Hey, who can argue with that?
4. Here It Is: Doctor Number 12’s Sonic Screwdriver!
Fans were astounded to see that merchandise focus the Sonic Screwdriver was not getting a serious overhaul for the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor. With a determination to avoid snogging and overusing his once universal key, Peter Capaldi instead resisted attempts to update the device. In fact, his Doctor barely used the sonic screwdriver throughout Series 8…
3. Moffat Explains: Why The TARDIS Dislikes Clara
Back in Series 7b it was established that the TARDIS isn’t keen on Clara. Could this have been because of her presence on Gallifrey as a splinter when the Doctor stole the TARDIS? Or could it be because Clara was leading the Doctor to his death on Trenzalore?
Nothing so interesting, according to the Moff, who said that the TARDIS was suspicious of the companion, feeling that “clever, sceptical, hard-to-impress Clara might just cause trouble.”
2. Whoniverse Con Cancelled As Matt Smith Forced To Withdraw
There have been a few Doctor Who conventions cancelled in 2014, but most notable was Whoniverse, an Australian event that folded after first Karen Gillan, then Matt Smith, withdrew, the latter citing a “personal family emergency”.
1. Karen Gillan’s Naked Selfie
Oh you naughty Kasterborites. The most popular article on the site during 2014 was the one that carried an image of Karen Gillan wearing very little in a snap from the doomed Selfie, a show that attempted to bring the Pygmalion story up to date, but really only succeeded in drawing ire (admittedly at everyone in it except Karen). We can only suppose the high visitor rate on this post was because you were supporting Karen in her first US TV role…
The Kasterborous Team Recall 2014
With a new Doctor, new series, new Master and a world tour, there has been a lot to talk about in Doctor Who fandom. I decided to ask the Kasterborous team for their favourite moments of being a fan in 2014.
Nick Kitchen
I’ve got two moments from Series 8 that stand out for me (remarkably, they have little to do with Capaldi!). The first is the Matt Smith cameo from Deep Breath and the following dialogue from Peter Capaldi. I was terribly on the fence with him as the Doctor until that sequence, and I think Moffat knew there would be many like me that needed that handoff. Second, the line heard around the Whoniverse: “Well, couldn’t very well keep calling myself the Master now, could I?”
We suspected it was coming, but what a moment!
Joe Siegler
For the show having the stones to cast and implement an older Doctor in this day and age. I honestly didn’t think they’d ever do that, and was something I’d been hoping they’d do for a really long time.
Drew Boynton
I’d say getting The Day of the Doctor on Blu-ray for my birthday. Also, getting Web of Fear on DVD and finally getting to see those lost episodes.
Becky Crockett
I had an ultimate Whovian moment – meeting my Doctor in person! Plus his companion. Got pictures with both Matt Smith and Karen Gillan when they were here in Philly and saw both Arthur Darvill and Alex Kingston at NYCC. I was side hugged by Matt and mere steps from Arthur. *fangirl swoon*
Jonathan Appleton
Tom Baker at Big Finish Day. He may be 80 but give him a microphone and an audience and it’s like it’s 1975 again… Check out the BF Tom Baker at 80 interview; he’s in reflective mood for much of it but still plenty of fun to be had – his tale of teasing Jon Pertwee about money is a hoot.
Patrick Riley
Seeing Deep Breath at the cinema was a nice moment. It was nothing compared to doing the same for The Day of the Doctor last year, but it was still a good highlight.
James Lomond
The moment that the Doctor put the bereaved woman’s psychological condition into his own mind in Mummy on the Orient Express and the next 66 seconds of Capaldi’s performance as the Mummy advanced on him and he solved the mystery and freed that ancient soldier. 66 Seconds in which the Doctor came back, properly, for me for the first time since 1989. Perfect.
Simon Mills
Taking m’daughter to see Deep Breath on the big screen with both of us wearing our scarves and getting really excited at the new title sequence. Marvellous stuff. Next year I want to get a hug from Sophie Aldred at the Sci Fi Weekender!
A Big Thank-You To Our Readers & Commenters

You’re all flipping brilliant, scouring our website 24 hours a day, reading and sharing what you find on Facebook, Twitter and by email, and we wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t for you. Actually, we would, because we’re all obsessive Doctor Who fans, but the difference is that knowing you’re reading makes us try harder.

Blake’s 7 Is Today’s “12 Days of Big Finish” Surprise Discount
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Although never officially declared a component of the Whoniverse (created by Terry Nation, overseen by Chris Boucher, various links from production crew to props), Blake’s 7 is affectionately held by fans of a certain age, which is one reason why Big Finish have been working hard over the years to reunite the cast for audio.
Early efforts included some Companion Chronicles-style stories, such as today’s “12 Days of Big Finish” discount, The Turing Test by Simon Guerrier, starring Paul Darrow (The Silurians, Timelash) as Avon and Michael Keating (The Sunmakers) as Vila. Taken from a boxset, Blake’s 7 – The Liberator Chronicles, this is a great entry point into the Blake’s 7 audios for newcomers, and features Avon and Vila going undercover at a top secret research establishment.
You can purchase The Turing Test for just £2.99 for 48 hours only – don’t miss out!

The Queen of Time Is Today’s Big Finish Sale Item!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Into the second half of Big Finish’s “12 Days” promotion, and if you haven’t bought any of their £2.99 reductions yet then this one might just catch your eye. The Queen of Time is a Lost Story conceived by Brian Hayles from the Second Doctor era, and is here performed by Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury…
Somewhere outside our universe, she is waiting.
A god-like immortal, living in a realm of clocks. The hours tick slowly by as she plots and plans. She is readying her trap. A trap for a very special man in a very special police box.
Hecuba has all the time in the world. But for the Doctor, time is running out.
Written by Brian Hayles and adapted by Catherine Harvey, The Queen of Time is directed by Lisa Bowerman and can be found at Big Finish for just £2.99 for 48 hours – don’t miss it!

War Doctor Knighted! John Hurt Among New Year’s Honours Recipients
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Great news for fans of the War Doctor! Veteran actor John Hurt whose performance in The Day of the Doctor brought a brand new incarnation of the Doctor to life in record time, has been awarded a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list.
Hurt, whose credits include I, Claudius, Alien (the link to Last Christmas is lost on no one!), The Elephant Man, 1984, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the Harry Potter series, Scandal, V for Vendetta, various performances as Quentin Crisp (The Naked Civil Servant, An Engishman in New York) and the most recent Indiana Jones movie to name but a few of many, will formally receive the honour, which pays tribute to his long career in TV, film and theatre, in 2015.
Meanwhile, James Corden (The Lodger, Closing Time) and Sheridan Smith (Eighth Doctor audio companion Lucie Miller and most recently seen portraying the young Cilla Black on ITV) have both received OBEs for services to drama, with Corden noting “My family are very proud. My mum is already fretting about what to wear.” Corden, of course, will be moving to the USA shortly to take over the Late Late Show on CBS, replacing Craig Ferguson on March 23, 2015.
So congratulations to all Whovian recipients of these Establishment honours in recognition of their work.
If you’re a fan of these sorts of award and feel that there is someone missing, perhaps you could start a campaign, like this one to have Bernard Cribbins knighted.

2014 Shows From The Who Team You Should Watch
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Basically every show you watch on telly these days has some sort of connection with Doctor Who.
Spotting actors who have appeared in the Beeb’s flagship sci-fi show is quite a fun hobby, if a little annoying to those not versed in the ways of the Big Blue Box. Game of Thrones, for instance, has starred Iain Glen (The Time of Angels/ Flesh and Stone), David Bradley (Dinosaurs on a Spaceship), Julian Glover (City of Death), and Diana Rigg (The Crimson Horror) – to name just a few. It’s also nice to speculate what roles other stars you’d like to see in Who may take: Natalie Dormer as a companion, anyone?
And if you love Doctor Who, you probably love TV. Here, we celebrate some of the best television of 2014…
Sherlock
INITIAL BROADCAST: January; BBC1.
Series 3 of this critically-acclaimed show was greatly anticipated by pretty much everyone, mainly because the world was intrigued to find out how Sherlock survived his ‘Reichenbach’ fall. The first script, by prolific Who writer Mark Gatiss, teased the audience throughout, and a comedic opening enraged the internet. No shock there then.
The final episode, His Last Vow, was written by Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, and directed by Nick Hurran (responsible for the incredible style of the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor), and concluded, once again, with a cliffhanger. But the best story of the three was probably The Sign of Three, in which John Watson married Mary Morstan. It was written by Moffat, Gatiss and Stephen Thompson (Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS) and directed by Colm McCarthy (The Bells of St. John).
Selfie
INITIAL BROADCAST: September – December; HBO, Hulu.
This US sitcom never really hit the right chord with critics and has sadly been cancelled, but nonetheless, it’s nominated in the Favourite New TV Comedy category at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards!
Selfie is a 21st Century take on My Fair Lady – or, if you prefer, the original 1912 play, Pygmalion. Karen Gillan, best known for playing Amy Pond regularly between 2010 and 2012 (then again in 2013 for one last surprise farewell), plays Eliza Dooley who is obsessed with social media and soon becomes an internet sensation- but seeks actual friendship instead of simply on Instagram. Co-starring Star Trek‘s John Cho, Selfie got lots of publicity: most famously, Karen posted a tasteful nude selfie online to draw the audiences in.
It’s an interesting concept and well worth a look. But yes, it’s been cancelled. Fortunately, that’s not stopped Karen, who played Nebula in the hit Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy and has been rumoured to star in a remake of Jumanji (a film she apparently loved growing up).
Prey
INITIAL BROADCAST: April – May; ITV.
This miniseries should’ve been a big deal, but media attention instead went onto another high-octane drama on BBC, which we’ll be turning our attention to shortly.
At just three episodes, Prey was intense and gripping – and starred one of the UK’s best actors in a lead role. John Simm will always be remembered as the Master in Doctor Who and Sam Tyler in Life on Mars, but he gave a great performance as DC Marcus Farrow, a man who finds himself blamed for the death of his wife and child. There was just a hint of last year’s The Escape Artist there, but it quickly turned into a man-on-the-run story with a nice dollop of twists.
Happy Valley
INITIAL BROADCAST: April – June; BBC1.
Happy Valley was the undisputed hit of the summer. And that’s because it was simply brilliant.
Sarah Lancashire (Partners in Crime) displayed amazing drive and heart in this gut-wrenching drama, and James Norton became the face of evil for six weeks as the disturbed Tommy Lee Royce. Whovians might’ve struggled to connect Norton with Doctor Who, but take a look at 2013’s Cold War and there he is, playing Onegin. The two roles are complete polar opposites, and Norton pulls them both off admirably, showing us all what a great actor he is. He played a Certified Nice Guy once more in ITV’s Grantchester too.
Oh, and he’d like to be in Doctor Who again!
If you want further Who connections, Steve Pemberton (Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead) played Kevin, George Costigan (Voyage of the Damned) played Nevison, and Euros Lyn (The End of the World; The End of Time) directed the first three episodes.
Sure, some complained about the violence in Happy Valley, but it was a piece of art – and from the pen of Sally Wainwright, creator of the sweet, gentle, and superb Last Tango in Halifax.
A Touch of Cloth: Too Cloth For Comfort
INITIAL BROADCAST: August; Sky 1.
Now for something lighter. A lot lighter…
Charlie Brooker’s spoof detective series first debuted in 2012, and for this third series, the cast welcomed Karen Gillan. As Kerry Newblood.
It’s the kind of show TV’s been missing for quite some time: anyone watching will get visions of Police Squad! (or, indeed, anything with Leslie Nielsen). It’s silly and smart. It’s also very adult. Plenty of swearing and jokes about sex. Wait! Finish this article before you rush off to watch it!
John Hannah heads the cast – why hasn’t he been in Doctor Who?! – joined by Suranne Jones, aka. Idris in The Doctor’s Wife, and Daisy Beaumont (Mummy on the Orient Express).
Line of Duty
INITIAL BROADCAST: February – March; BBC2.
Series 1 was BBC2’s best-performing drama series in a decade; Series 2 saw it head for greater heights. The Telegraph named it one of the channel’s Top 50 Shows of All Time. The Guardian called it the Best TV Drama of 2014.Steven Moffat has openly praised series creator, Jed Mercurio.
The action focussed on Keeley Hawes’ character DI Lindsay Denton – Hawes having been in this year’s Time Heist – who is accused of multiple murders. The beautiful Jessica Raine (An Adventure in Space and Time) joined the cast, as did Christina Chong (A Good Man Goes To War) and Mark Bonnar (The Rebel Flesh/ The Almost People).
All six episodes were directed by Douglas Mackinnon (The Power of Three; Flatline), so of course it looks stunning, and the first part of Series 2 has one of the most shocking endings I’ve ever seen.
Death in Paradise
INITIAL BROADCAST: January – March; BBC1.
You know what? I love Death in Paradise.
This year, it did the impossible: in episode one, the lead character, DI Richard Poole (the excellent Ben Miller, who starred in Robot of Sherwood) was killed off, and his replacement had to take up the investigation. That replacement was DI Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall. The baton was handed over. And the show stayed as successful and brilliant as before.
Very few shows can replace the main character and still be as good. There’s only one TV show I can think of otherwise – and that’s Doctor Who!
Rise of the Cybermen‘s Don Warrington is present on and off, and the Fifth Doctor himself, Peter Davison cropped up in the second episode of Series 3, alongside Michelle Ryan (Planet of the Dead).
What’s more, Death in Paradise returns to BBC1 on 8th January 2015!
The Musketeers
INITIAL BROADCAST: January – March; BBC1.
This was, perhaps, a surprise hit early this year, but it had action, violence, romance, and fun in perfect measurements… and starred the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, as the core villain, Cardinal Richelieu.
Everyone knows the concept of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers, but the ten-part series was a refreshing change of tone for the main channel. It was smartly written, deftly acted, and was beautiful on the eye. Personally, I put that down to Alexandra Dowling as Queen Anne, but I guess it was nicely directed too.
No, but seriously, they employed some great directors, including Toby Haynes (A Christmas Carol); Saul Metzstein (A Town Called Mercy); Richard Clark (Gridlock); and Farren Blackburn (The Rings of Akhaten).
The Musketeers, too, returns in the New Year, sans Capaldi who is too busy doing something else. Can’t remember what.
Other TV shows you might be interested in from the Who team include Marvellous and The Detectorists, both starring Toby Jones (Amy’s Choice); Bruce’s Hall of Fame, with a Norman Wisdom tribute by Ben Miller; The Lost Honour of Christopher Jeffries, based on tragic real events and starring Nightmare in Silver‘s Jason Watkins; Inside No. 9, co-created by Steve Pemberton (Silence in the Library/ Forest of the Dead), and starring Anne Reid (Smith and Jones), Tamsin Greig (The Long Game), and Kayvan Novak (The Time of the Doctor); The Leftovers with Ninth Doctor, Christopher Ecclestone; Toast of London, starring Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison; Chasing Shadows, an underrated drama with Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith) and Alex Kingston (River Song); The Wrong Mans, starring James Cordan (The Lodger); Edge of Heaven with Camille Coduri (Jackie Tyler); Peaky Blinders, directed by Colm McCarthy (The Bells of Saint John); Casualty and Holby City, both starring Georgia Moffett aka The Doctor’s Daughter, married to David Tennant and daughter of Peter Davison; and Penny Dreadful, directed by James Hawes (The Empty Child/ The Doctor Dances), with a huge host of stars including Billie Piper (Rose Tyler), Timothy Dalton (The End of Time), and Helen McCrory (Vampires of Venice).
Phew! 2014 has been a great year for quality TV!

Who Is YOUR Favourite Doctor Who Mimic?
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Doctor Who mimicry seems to be a growing aspect of fandom, with cosplayers and actors alike offering their own (often amazing) interpretations of a particular star’s voice.
The latest to take the fan niche of Doctor Who impersonation by storm is Jake Dudman, who seems to have smuggled Matt Smith into his larynx (perhaps he’s a tessalecta?), and you can observe the slightly unnerving result above.
As you should already be away, however, Dudman isn’t the only Doctor Who fan who can mimic the show’s stars. Perhaps the most famous is comedian John Culshaw, whose TV and radio series Dead Ringers regularly featured various incarnations of the Doctor, particularly the Fourth. Here he switches between Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee during the 2013 50th anniversary celebrations.
As famous as Culshaw is, however, he’s never actually played the Doctor; friend of Kasterborous John Guilor, meanwhile, has: twice. First in the reconstructed episode on the Planet of Giants DVD, and later in the 50th anniversary itself, The Day of the Doctor, both times as William Hartnell’s First Doctor.
Guilor also does a formidable Fourth Doctor (as well as the Fifth) which you can hear introducing our weekly podKasts (swapping duties every week with the First Doctor). Here he is with a Cyberman.
Finally, we’ve got Frazer Hines, better known to fans as Jamie McCrimmon, companion to the Second Doctor. In the course of his Big Finish work, Hines has produced a surprisingly good likeness for Patrick Troughton’s Doctor, as you can hear below.
Now, we know that these four guys all do superb impersonations, but are there others out there that we’re not aware of? Can your dad impersonate David Tennant? Does your brother pretend to be the Ninth Doctor, or does your teacher bellow like the Sixth?
Perhaps you have a sergeant who sounds like the First Doctor. (Perhaps you’re Charles Hawtrey, in which case things have got really weird). Whatever the case, if you or someone you know of can mimic a Doctor Who star without upsetting the police, we want to hear about it!
