Doctor Who Returns To Spain For Series 9?

It looks like Doctor Who is once more returning to Spain!

Spain does offer some incredible vistas, so it’s good to see the show going overseas again.

Director of Photography, Ali Asad, let the cat out of the bag via Twitter, stating: “Going to Spain on a location recce for the DR” – DR being code for the show (placards with this on are frequently attached to road signs in Wales to direct vehicles with equipment to filming locations).

It wasn’t all that explicit at first, however…

Two days later, Asad spilled the beans.

Asad is working on two episodes for Series 9, although  naturally we know very little else about it. Basically all we know is that it’ll star Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, the opening episode will be called The Magician’s Apprentice, and that debut – written by showrunner, Steven Moffat, guest will star Paul Kaye. Asad studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths, where he first began his fascination with film and started his career by working on adverts and music videos. And yes, he’s previously said he’s a long-term Doctor Who fan so is over the moon to be working on Capaldi’s second series at the helm of the TARDIS.

Famously, Doctor Who filmed in Lanzarote for Planet of Fire – the introduction of Peri and a sad farewell to Turlough – and headed to mainland Spain for The Two Doctors the following year. Further shoots in Spain are more recent: A Town Called Mercy saw Almeria double for the Wild West, and the snowy climes for Asylum of the Daleks were also found there, just over the mountains! Finally, for last year’s Kill The Moon, the Doctor returned to Lanzarote!
