New Martial Arts Channel: The Lion’s Roar
The Lion’s Roar, April 8, 2020
Ying Ma recently launched a new martial arts channel called “The Lion’s Roar.” The channel seeks to ease the disconnect between Chinese culture and Chinese martial arts as practiced in the West. It discuss culture, traditions, history, philosophy, and faith–all those things that provide Chinese martial arts with guidance and meaning but are often neglected or lost in translation in the West.
Watch the introduction to the channel in the video below.
Watch below for one of the channel’s first episodes, where we discuss a fundamental concept that lies at the core of Confucian teachings as well as at the heart of martial arts that have been shaped by the Confucian tradition: First, right your heart (先正其心).
Subscribe to the new martial arts channel on YouTube and follow on Facebook and Instagram. Please like, comment and share widely.

Identity politics is the purveyor of real racism during coronavirus pandemic
Washington Examiner, March 26 2020
Being on the receiving end of racism is not fun. For those of us who have experienced it, we know that it can be enraging and humiliating all at once.
It makes no difference what color or ethnicity the racist is, but this seemingly uncontroversial assertion has long been rejected, dismissed, or ignored by mainstream society and the liberal media. After all, the Left has taught that racism means prejudice plus power, and only white people, who hold the power in this country, can be racist.
Then the coronavirus outbreak took over daily life. All of a sudden, the media is open to reporting that Chinese Americans, along with other Asians who are mistaken as being of Chinese descent, are facing racism not just from white people but also racial and ethnic minorities.

Outrage over Trump saying ‘Chinese virus’ says a lot about critics’ biases
Washington Examiner, March 20, 2020
Much outrage has materialized over President Trump’s use of the term “Chinese virus” to refer to the novel coronavirus pandemic affecting the United States and the world. Critics have condemned the president as “racist” and “xenophobic.”
Certainly, such allegations are not new for the president. Just as in the past, they reveal far more about the biases of the accusers than they do about Trump.

Coronavirus will fade, but the threat of socialism will remain
Washington Examiner, March 19, 2020
What a difference a few weeks make. It was less than a month ago that socialism, not the coronavirus, dominated national political discussions. Today, the coronavirus has wreaked havoc on society and financial markets and drastically altered the political landscape.
This year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, the nation’s preeminent annual conservative conclave, took place over the course of four days in late February and unwittingly became a leading indicator of how much the world would change.

Sexism is the wrong scapegoat for Warren’s and Clinton’s failures
Washington Examiner, March 10, 2020
For a political entity that is obsessed with and subservient to identity politics, the Democratic Party now faces the irony of having two white men in their 70s, former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, as the last viable contenders duking it out for the party’s presidential nomination in 2020.
Among the Democratic constituencies that derive their entitlement to succeed in life from immutable characteristics, women seem most aggrieved.

Trump administration enabled Romney and never-Trumpers. Now it’s time to clean house.
NBCNews THINK, February 12, 2020
In the days following President Donald Trump’s impeachment acquittal, Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah — the only Republican to vote with Democrats to convict the president in the Senate trial — has been the object of almost daily scorn. Over the weekend, Trump singled out Romney in a long tweetstorm, claiming that he “hurt some very good Republican Senators, and he was wrong about the Impeachment Hoax.”
Earlier in the impeachment saga, Trump had directed his anger at officials who testified against him during the House impeachment inquiry, calling them never-Trumpers. They included career diplomats William Taylor and George Kent and former White House aides Jennifer Williams and Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman. Last Friday, Vindman was fired from his position at the National Security Council.
Few observers are surprised by Trump’s fury at those who participated in the effort to oust him from office. Most, however, have failed to notice one of the biggest ironies of the Trump administration: It has repeatedly endorsed, hired and elevated critics and opponents.

Martial arts superstars and radical Hong Kong protestors fall short in historic moment
Washington Examiner, January 31, 2020
In his new movie, Ip Man 4: The Finale, Hong Kong martial arts superstar Donnie Yen declares, “I’m a martial artist. In the face of injustice, I must take a stand and fight.”
Not true, say Hong Kong residents who have been protesting for freedom and democracy for the past eight months. To them, Yen and other martial arts luminaries have instead been defending Chinese authoritarianism in real life.
Massive protests in Hong Kong have rocked the city and have resulted in a raucous, historic democracy movement advancing Hong Kongers’ desires to be free of encroachments from the Chinese government in Beijing that governs them under a “one country, two systems” framework.
Instead of supporting the protesters, prominent martial arts celebrities have either outright condemned the movement or cozied up to Beijing.

Protester violence in Hong Kong needs to be renounced by the peaceful masses
Washington Examiner, November 15, 2019
As Hong Kong enters its sixth month of anti-government, pro-democracy protests, violence has become a hallmark of daily life. Though protesters have been hailed across the world as freedom fighters, the attacks perpetrated by radical elements have become increasingly horrific and barbaric.
For the movement to retain its moral legitimacy and international support, it will need to condemn unambiguously the heinous acts committed by hardcore protesters. Thus far, that has not happened. Instead, young people on the front lines of the violence have turned their universities into war zones with the police.
