Kungfu vs. Mixed Martial Arts
“China vs. USA,” June 13, 2022
Chinese Kungfu looks great in the movies, but does it work for real fighting? A few years ago, a Chinese mixed martial artist fought a Chinese Tai-chi master and knocked him out in 20 seconds. Since then, many have wondered about the practicality and effectiveness of Kungfu. Can Kungfu masters withstand the pressure against MMA fighters, or street thugs for that matter?
Meanwhile, Chinese fighters have been rising to the top of the ranks in the UFC. How much does their traditional Kungfu training help them in the octagon?
For a fascinating conversation on these topics, listen to the latest episode of Ying Ma’s podcast, “China vs. USA.” She interviews Coach Marcus Reeves, owner and head coach of the UFC Gym in Sacramento, California. He coaches numerous professional and amateur fighters, including Chinese UFC stars Yadong Song and Xiaonan Yan.

Ward Connerly and Betty Chu Endorse Brian Maryott for U.S. Congress,
Representing California’s 49th Congressional District
Sacramento and Villa Park, CA—May 25, 2022—Ward Connerly, nationally renowned conservative civil rights leader, and Betty Chu, former mayor of Monterey Park and former candidate for California’s 32nd congressional district, today endorsed Brian Maryott as U.S. congressional candidate for California’s 49th district.
“I am pleased to endorse Brian Maryott and applaud him for his support for equal rights for Americans regardless of race, ethnicity, and gender,” said Connerly.
“While voters in this year’s elections are hurting due to out-of-control crime, homelessness, inflation, and illegal immigration, the ‘racial equity’ agenda has become the governing philosophy for the Biden administration and an obsession for far too many in the U.S. Congress,” Connerly continued.
“We cannot afford to send lawmakers to Washington who support or cower before legislation and initiatives—ranging from racial preferences to critical race theory—that call for special treatment for some rather than equality for all.” Connerly described Maryott as “a proven leader who will offer solutions for kitchen-table issues as well as stand firm on American values, such as equality for all.”
In 2020, Connerly and Chu served as president and honorary co-chair, respectively, of the “No on Prop 16” campaign. The campaign defeated a proposition that sought to repeal the part of the California Constitution—passed as Proposition 209 in 1996—that prohibits racial discrimination and racial preferences in public employment, public contracting, and public education. Though Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump by nearly 2 to 1 in the Golden State, the “No” campaign won by 57 percent to 43 percent, despite being outspent by 16 to 1.
“I echo Ward’s support for Maryott,” said Chu, the first American woman of Chinese descent to serve as an attorney in Southern California and to co-found and run a bank. “Despite the resounding defeat of Prop 16 two years ago, extremists in California and across the country have continued to stoke racial enmity and spread reprehensible educational policies, ranging from curricula that teach children racism to complicated schemes at elite universities that brazenly discriminate against Asian applicants. We need policymakers like Maryott in the U.S. Congress to fight for common sense and equal rights.”
Chu continued, “Some candidates running in the 49th district this year have shamelessly touted their alleged commitment to defending the safety and interests of Americans of Asian descent while fanning identity politics and racial grievances, or failing to oppose brazen racial discrimination against this community. By contrast, Maryott is a candidate who will lead on, not run away from, these issues.”
“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank Ward and Betty for their ringing endorsements,” said Maryott, businessman, nonprofit executive, and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional. “I am honored that these distinguished individuals, with their long history of public leadership, have entrusted me with their support. I look forward to working with them and learning from their expertise and wisdom during this campaign.”
“Californians spoke loud and clear when they resoundingly rejected Prop 16 in 2020,” Connerly added. “Together with Betty and other colleagues, we will extend that victory this year and beyond by supporting candidates who stand for equal rights while holding accountable those politicians who do not. We look forward to Maryott wining in the June 7 primary and in November.”
The newly redrawn 49th congressional district stretches along the California coast from Del Mar in San Diego County to Dana Point in Orange County.

Conventional Wisdom Is Wrong About China
“China vs. USA,” April 29, 2022
Conventional wisdom in foreign policy circles these days says that constructive engagement with China in decades past has been an unmitigated disaster, but just because lots of people in Washington say the same thing does not make it true. In the latest episode of her podcast, “China vs. USA,” Ying Ma speaks with Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the Cato Institute, about what the United States got right about China, what lessons Washington still has not learned from America’s post-9/11 military interventions overseas, and how best to shape the future of U.S.-China relations.

An overdue conversation about black-on-Asian violence
Washington Examiner, May 13, 2021
–By Ying Ma
The frequency and brutality of anti-Asian violence have made “Stop Asian Hate” a popular hashtag and protest slogan this year. Still, America has yet to grapple with a core part of the problem: black-on-Asian crime and racism.
Two of the latest possible hate crimes took place in New York City. Early this month, a female black suspect struck a 31-year-old Chinese woman in the head with a hammer in midtown Manhattan. In late April, in East Harlem, a black man viciously attacked 61-year-old Yao Pan Ma as he was collecting used cans and bottles. As Ma fell to the ground, the attacker stomped on his head multiple times.
Tragically, such horrendous crimes have now become commonplace in major urban centers. Notable attacks have occurred in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle. Often, the victims are defenseless, the attacks unprovoked, and the culprits not white.

Asian Americans Call on Biden Administration to Address Violence and Racism with Concrete Action; Maryland First Lady Yumi Hogan Expresses Support
Bellevue, WA, and Industry, C—April 5, 2021—A national coalition of Asian-American advocacy groups recently called on the Biden administration to take concrete action to combat anti-Asian racism and violence. Yumi Hogan, Maryland’s First Lady and the country’s first Korean-American first lady, today offered support for this significant undertaking. The leaders of the coalition will hold a virtual press conference on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. PDT / 2:00 p.m. EDT to discuss their recommendations.
Though President Joe Biden has repeatedly condemned anti-Asian hate and has proposed measures to address the problem, thus far his administration has failed to fully identify and properly address crucial issues of longstanding violence and racism against Asian Americans.
Spearheaded by Asian Industry B2B (in California) and Washington Asians for Equality (in Washington State), this national coalition urges President Biden to take the following steps:
“Stopping racism and violence against Asian Americans will require courage and moral clarity,” said Linda Yang, director of Washington Asians for Equality. “We hope the Biden administration will rise to the occasion by not only speaking honestly about anti-Asian hate crimes, even when it might be uncomfortable, but also taking real action to tackle problems that contribute to anti-Asian discrimination, whether in America’s higher education or on the streets in our local communities.”
“In recent months, far too many horrific, wanton attacks against Asian Americans have occurred in this country. They are grotesque and they must end,” said Marc Ang, president of Asian Industry B2B. “It is unconscionable that in multiple cities, the elderly rightfully feel they cannot walk down the street safely in broad daylight and ordinary people cannot ride the subway without being viciously beaten and left for dead. Law and order must be upheld to prevent further attacks on the most vulnerable and the law abiding, and we call on the Biden administration to defend law and order and help to protect Asian Americans.”
“I want to extend my gratitude to you all for establishing this influential and powerful coalition of Asian American advocacy groups to defeat hate crimes and discrimination against our community,” said First Lady Hogan in a letter to the coalition of Asian Americans.
“Actions of hate, discrimination, and bigotry should have no home anywhere. I appreciate your courageousness, and am proud to see your organization coming together to stand against injustice and violence,” Mrs. Hogan continued. Her letter can be read in its entirety here.
