another general update

Hi again,

Just popping in to say thanks to those who wished me well in my recent marriage, and to give two brief updates. Firstly, I am flying out to Costa Rica tonight, so I’ll be away from writing and the webs and all that other fun work-related stuff, hopefully to return on the 20th ready for the final sprint to the finish on the new book.

We are still looking good at this stage for an August 31 release, which is a Friday. I like to release things on Fridays because folks are always stocking...

general update

Hi all,

It’s been pretty quiet from me for the last four weeks or so, and with good reason: I have been very busy in a multiple of ways, and I’ve just popped out of seclusion to pen this brief update before getting back to the grindstones that have recently occupied me.

Firstly, and most important, given that you are all here for reasons of writing, you will have noticed that July has (pretty much) passed without any new book having been released. I had posted some time ago that I’d put myEidyl...

all my ducks in one basket

This is what happens when things do not go according to plans, and I’d like to think that I’ve learnt my lesson well, but (knowing myself) it will probably happen again in the future…hopefully not the too-near future, though!

I’ve talked up my upcoming novelEidylon, and it is a great story…just the story-telling sucked. My sister reckons that I’m trying too hard at this point, need to step back and breathe, and think about something totally different.

Hence, upon her sage advice, I shelvedEidyl...

football, book fall, and more

You know us foreigners! Football of the European sort is the governing aspect of our lives, and the European Championships have been eating up my mornings like Yogi Bear into a picnic basket! How on earth did the Dutch manage to lose that game? Though I was raised English South African, my heritage is split with the Dutch, and I’ve always favoured the Oranje! Anyhow, you haven’t stopped by to hear me whine about Arjen Robben’s finishing or RVP’s chocolate leg.

The first book of theEidylon seri...

sometimes the magic only strikes once

Rereading books is an odd thing. Sometimes, the book grows in depth and meaning for the reader. At other times, the reader fails to see why he wanted to reread the book in the first place.

This has been on my mind in recent weeks as I’ve been rereading two very different books by two very different authors. My admiration for Brandon Sanderson is, by now, well known to those who frequent this blog with anything approaching regularity. I recently readElantris for the third time and declared it m...

one million

So, nothing too much to report here today. I’ve revised my thoughts regarding the new material slightly, such that I’m still working on content for book one, making it a bit longer than planned. In the end, my thoughts are simply to avoid giving the appearance of publishing something unfinished or partial while at the same time still really only giving some of the complete story. So, while this will not be a series of standalone titles, each part of Eidylon will be novel-length and relatively...

Guest Post: Kevin Anthony, author of Mad Moral

Something a little bit different today. I have an introduction by Kevin Anthony to his urban fantasy Mad Series, the first volume of which, Mad Moral, is free to download at Smashwords.

Kevin has been writing since the age of eighteen. After high school, he realized he wanted to entertain others, and for the very first time, he wrote a story. After posting online, he soon discovered his first work titled “March” was a complete mess.

He posted online because he wanted some of the most outspoken c...

decision time nears

So, an interesting week has passed me by. I put Rachel Aaron’s 10,000 words a day techniques to the test, and I found them to be very useful indeed…to a point. That point, however, is more due to my mindset than the techniques she outlines in this article. I found that I was able to write the same number of words in half the time, which certainly opened thepossibilityfor me to go on 10,000-word rampages. Only, I did not. And this is due to my head still being stuck in a words-per-day mindset...

just another update post (5/21 update)

Well, now that we are well and truly past the excitement of regularScion releases, I must find something to talk about here. I do have an update both on the Nook editions and on the new material, but I want to start off talking about something I stumbled across this weekend on the internet.

10,000 words a day?

This post by fantasy writer Rachel Aaron, who I just recently discovered, was nothing short of inspirational. Now, before I go any further, let me say that I struggle for consistency but...
