The Devil in The White City by Erik Larson: Book Review
In a city preparing for the world’s fair a serial killer slinks around in the shadows.
The author tells two stories side by side in a documentary style that entertains while it creeps you out in parts. The first story is how Chicago won the choice for the site of the world’s fair in 1893, and all the wonders that were revealed there. The second story is about the serial killer who used the excitement of the fair to lure young women to his killing ground.
I recommend this to anyone who likes a creepy serial killer true crime story. It’s also in development for a movie staring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison: Book Review
Who would have thought an innocent tomato could cause such havoc?
A tomato borne virus splits humanity into the normal and the supernatural. Now Rachel lives with a vampire, not a normal one this one is still living. She works for a paranormal form of the FBI and she keeps getting the crappy jobs. A girl needs to kick start her career somehow because getting out isn’t currently an option.
Brimstone is the current drug of choice destroying life as we know it, so why not take down the biggest dealer in town. Even if it doesn’t help her negotiate a release from her job, it’s a big boost to her reputation.
I recommend this to any one who likes great urban fantasy and is a fan of authors like Jim Butcher.

Shot of Tequila by J. A. Konrath: Book Review
Another Jack Daniels book and another fast paced read.
What happens to a hitman when his boss gets robbed and he gets framed? Tequila goes on the run and stays there because everyone is chasing him. The thing is, he’s not a good guy, and he probably deserves what’s coming, but it just doesn’t seem fair to die for someone else’s crime.
If you liked the other Jack Daniels books, you’ll love this one. If it’s new to you, be warned Konrath doesn’t write for the faint of heart.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes hard boiled crime with a sense of humor.

Blood Lies by Daniel Kalla: Book Review
What happens when the best evidence against you is DNA?
When Ben, an ER doctor with a past, finds out he’s the prime suspect in the murder of his former fiancee, he goes on the run. The DNA is his, but he didn’t do it. The twist you think is coming about his twin brother, is right there up front. The brother is dead so how does his fresh DNA show up at the crime scene.
Ben runs from Seattle to the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver BC. A clinic in the poorest area in the city doesn’t ask too many questions of a doctor who will volunteer. The clinic gives Ben a base for his investigation.
I recommend this story to anyone who loves a mystery with more than one twist.

Graveyard Shift by Angela Roquet: book review
Lana Harvey is a reaper. She collects the souls of the dead and delivers them to their fate. It sounds simple, but Lana’s days are far from simple. Every soul goes to a specific location and if you are bound for the Christian Heaven, you can’t be sold to the Pagan afterlife.
Demons and Angels populate the story and both can be friend, foe, or otherwise.
Purgatory is held together with a peace agreement that is fraying at the edges. A secret threatens to drown the city in a holy war not seen for centuries, and it’s all up to Lana to fix. If only people would tell her the truth.
I recommend this story to anyone who likes an afterlife populated with beings as flawed as the humans on this side of death.

Flanagan’s By The Sea by Chris Fraser: Book Review
Dicky has a problem, well maybe more than one, but the first is a doozy. His dad needs a favor and that means going to the prison for the details. And when the favor turns out to be a way to get his dad out of prison, Dicky has to do whatever it takes.
His family is the definition of disfunction, and Dicky is no exception. The twists in the story take him on a journey that started years ago and seems to be finally coming to an end. Whether that end is a place where Dicky can start over, or a place where everyone dies, is the question that keeps pulling you through the story.
A definite noir take on a mystery, with a broken hero and a cast of family members who are reliable – well that’s not necessarily a good thing. Being reliable for screwing up isn’t what most people want.
I recommend this book if you like a bunch of characters who are trying to do the right thing, they just have a different idea of right.

Irreparable Harm, Sasha McCandless, Melissa F Miller: book review
I bought the three book box set on a whim. I love the legal thriller when it’s done right, and this one is. We have Sasha who wouldn’t put her reputation on the line for anything. She’s tagged to make partner and she knows exactly what’s expected of her.
Then a plane crashes, and a man is killed and… well everything goes sideways.
Sasha has to question everything that she held as true to solve the case.
I recommend this to anyone who likes a good solid legal thriller and an independent woman. So, if you like Grisham for the story, and Grafton for the characters, you’ll love this one.

Meanwhile Back in Deadwood by Ann Charles: book review
Violet is still mired in the unknown and she’s still sitting on a stack of lies of omission. The dead/demons/others are out to get her. She’s the latest in a long line of demon killers, and she is still facing two highly suspicious police detectives.
Now she has to make a decision. Avoiding the problem is off the list of possible actions because Jerry insists that she walk the TV crew through all the haunted houses. Chances are there’ll be trouble, Violet hopes it won’t be on screen.
I recommend this to anyone who likes a hot romance played out on a background of ghosts, ghouls, and paranormal beasts. I suggest you start at the beginning, here’s the link to the first Deadwood review.
