UCLA Library’s Egyptian Special Collection
Attended an event by Egypt Exploration Organization of Southern California, to experience UCLA Library’s Egyptian Special Collection. It was an incredible opportunity to see rare books, stunning artwork, and fantastic early photography of Egypt in person:
Description de l’Égypte
Napoleon brought hundreds of scientists and artists on his campaign to Egypt. Leaf through the original books they published between 1809-1829, including stunning, 6-foot-tall “elephant plates!
Original David Roberts Prints
Books containing Scottish painter David Roberts’ gorgeous, atmospheric drawings and paintings of Egypt from 1838-1840.
Vintage Photo Albums
Photographs of Egyptian monuments were assembled into elegant albums as a travel souvenir for the Vanderbilt family by photographer Antonio Beato between 1862 and 1887, during the years he worked from his studio in Luxor. Also photographs by W. Hammerschmidt, from 1860-1869 when he worked in Egypt.
Excavation Reports
A collection of reports written by prominent Egyptologists as they excavated ancient Egyptian sites.
Cuneiform Tablets
Although these ancient artifacts depicting one of humanity’s first attempts at writing are not Egyptian, they are a thrill to behold. The oldest tablet dates from 3,200 B.C.!
Egyptian Papyrus
Precious, Egyptian papyrus fragment from the 7th century A.D.
Most items in the Egyptian Collection is stored off-site and requires advanced notice for access. Website for the UCLA Library Special Collection.

Salima Ikram Lecture: Manufacturing Divinities: Creating Animal Mummis in Ancient Egypt — Tuesday, April 8th
http://www.bowers.org/index.php/programs/lectures/event/1162-bowers-after-hours-manufacturing-divinities-creating-animal-mummies-in-ancient-egypt
The relationship between humans and animals has always been complex with mutual dependencies that are practical, psychological, and even theological. Ancient Egyptian animal mummies are a particular manifestation of this complex web of inter-relations. This lecture presents the different types of animal mummies (food, pets, votive offerings, sacred creatures, and ‘other’) and explains how and why they were made, bringing experimental archaeology into play in order to explain the more practical aspects of mummy production, from obtaining the animal to creating a mini-divinity: a mummy. The socio-economic, as well as religious implications of these animal cults in ancient Egypt will also be addressed.

Bowers Museum New Exhibition — Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies In Ancient Egypt — Opening March 22
AUC Press Nature Foldouts are available in the Bowers Museum Bookstore.
Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt — March 22 – June 15, 2014 — is the first major exhibition to focus on one of the most fascinating aspects of ancient Egyptian culture and religion—the mummification of animals. Drawn from the renowned collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Soulful Creatures features choice examples from among the many millions of mummies of birds, cats, dogs, snakes, and other animals preserved from at least thirty-one different cemeteries throughout Egypt.
While the exact significance of animal mummies has largely remained a mystery, this exhibition investigates the many provocative theories proposed to explain the practice, and offers dynamic presentations of its origins, techniques, and rituals as well as recent scientific tests that have uncovered key information about the methods used to create animal mummies. By drawing on archaeology, cultural history, and modern medical imaging, Soulful Creatures presents art history informed by the latest technology.
Soulful Creatures offers a fresh view of the meaning of animal mummies within Egyptian society and a new understanding of the ancient world through some of its most extraordinary surviving artifacts. The exhibition explores the role that animals and their images played in the Egyptians’ natural and supernatural worlds. It also explains the different kinds of animal mummies that the Egyptians produced and modern scientific methods for analyzing these mummies.
Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt has been organized by the Brooklyn Museum.
