35th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards – Winner for Outstanding Graphic Design & Art Direction for BIG HISTORY, H2 (History Channel)
(Marc Bryan-Brown Photography)
Dominique Navarro—artist and author of the AUC Press Nature Foldout series—won an Emmy Award for her work as art director on the History Channel (H2) series, BIG HISTORY.
The Big History series asks questions guaranteed to change the way you look at the past. Did Napoleon’s invasion of Russia come undone because of…tin buttons? Did New York become America’s biggest city because of…salt? How does the sinking of the Titanic power your cell phone? What’s the connection between ancient Egyptian mummies and a modern ham and cheese sandwich? By weaving science into the core of the human story, Big History takes familiar subjects and gives them a twist that will have you rethinking everything from the Big Bang to today’s headlines. The series creates an interconnected panorama of patterns and themes that links history to dozens of fields including astronomy, biology, chemistry, and geology. The first season ends with a two-hour finale that pulls everything we know about science and history into one grand narrative of the universe and us.

Environment Lecture at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute with Richard Hoath, October 16 6PM
The NVIC organizes weekly Thursday lectures on a variety of subjects. The lectures start at 6 p.m. sharp. The door opens at 5.30 p.m. Please note that seating is limited. The lecture will start as scheduled and late admissions are not allowed. After the lecture refreshments will be served in the hall of the Institute.
Starting a new round of lectures and movies, NVIC starts this year’s autumn season with the topic environment. Regarding the dictionary, environment stands broadly for two things: a) the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates, and b) the natural world, as a whole or in a particular geographical area, especially as affected by human activity. With NVIC’s October theme environment, we would like to look into some of the topics attached to the broader notion of environment. What is surrounding us, and how does it affect us? How do we treat our environment, and what is the result?
More about the lecture on the NVIC website: http://www.institutes.leiden.edu/nvic/news/lectures-films.html

Richard Hoath’s Article in Egypt Today, “Collect Carefully”
Richard Hoath, a scientific consultant for the AUC Press Nature Foldouts, has a new article in Egypt Today, about beachcombing, Mary Lyn Rusmore-Villaume’s Seashells of the Egyptian Red Sea book, and feather collecting.

The impact of shell collecting, particularly the living shells from the sea itself can be potentially harmful to the marine ecosystem. Many species, despite their hard shells (in the living animal often partly hidden beneath a fleshy mantle as stunning as the shell itself) are prey for other invertebrates such as the various species of octopus that share the reef habitat. The octopus, — a mollusk itself, remember, but without a shell — has a very powerful beak for which even a robust shell is little challenge. Fish such as the porcupinefishes, burrfishes and puffers also take marine mollusks, as does the rare Loggerhead Turtle

Richard Hoath’s Article in Egypt Today, “An Early Start”
Richard Hoath, a scientific consultant for the AUC Press Nature Foldouts, has a new article in Egypt Today, about the cool weather in Europe causing the early migrations of birds and butterflies to Egypt, including descriptions of the Clouded Yellow, Painted Lady, Red Admiral, the Common Swift and Common Cuckoo.

Anyone interested in wildlife movements in Egypt in fall needs to look at what is happening in Europe right now. This fall appears to be falling early up north. Already in the UK there are reports of hazel trees bearing nuts, beeches bearing mast and hawthorns haws. Holly is in full berry, the clumps of brilliant scarlet fruit a very early sign of Christmas – though not as early as the displays in some supermarkets. And Blackbirds have started to stop singing, nuptial duties complete. This all has implications for Egypt.
