Politicians mourn hostages, express anger at Hamas, repeat call for end to war
WASHINGTON – Condolences from the White House, members of Congress and political campaigns came after the Israeli Defense Forces found the bodies of six hostages.
Politicians from both sides of the aisle mourned the deaths of six hostages, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. The IDF identified the other hostages as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarus and Master Sgt. Stallion Danino.
In a statement, President Joe Biden said he was “broken and outraged” and stressed that “Hamas leaders are paying for these crimes.” Likewise, Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement:[M]ay Hersh’s memory be a blessing,” referring to a phrase Jews use when mourning the dead.
“Hamas is an evil terrorist organization,” Harris said in a statement issued in his official capacity as vice president, not as a political candidate. “With these killings, Hamas has even more American blood on its hands.”
Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, also called Hamas a “brutal terrorist organization” and wrote to X: “We condemn their continued atrocities against both Americans and Israelis in the strongest possible terms.”

Both Biden and Harris spoke with Goldberg-Polin’s parents, Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, on Sunday, according to the White House and Harris’ post about X. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan also held a virtual meeting Sunday with the families of the American hostages, discussing the Goldberg-Polin killing and diplomatic updates, according to the White House.
Former President Donald Trump said at X that “we mourn the senseless deaths of Israeli hostages,” but laid the blame for the deaths at the feet of Biden and Harris.
“Our country and amazing people are not safe under Joe Biden, and they will be less safe under Kamala Harris,” he said. “This horror would never have happened if I were president, and it ends the day I’m back in the Oval Office.”

From top left, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Ori Danino and Eden Yerushalmi. From bottom left, Almog Sarusi, Alexander Lobanov and Carmel Gat. The six have been held by Hamas since the October 7 terrorist attacks, and their deaths were announced on Saturday.
Unlike Trump, the reactions of members of Congress were largely non-political, expressing heartbreak and anger at Hamas rather than directing their anger at American politicians.
“His death and the killing of the five other captured hostages show how brutal Hamas is and how urgent it is to release all hostages now,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., X.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said he was “heartbroken” and added, “Every hostage must be released. Bring them all home.”
“I hope there will be pressure on Hamas and Netanyahu to end this war and release the hostages,” said Rep. Ro Khanna, R-Calif., on NBC News’ “Meet the Press.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham, RS.C., blamed Iran for the deaths of the hostages and called on the Biden administration and Israel to “hold Iran accountable.”
“If you want the hostages home, as we all do, you have to increase the cost of Iran. Iran is the great Satan. Hamas is the junior partner. They are barbaric, religious Nazis — Hamas, they could care less about the Palestinians,” Graham said in an interview Sunday with ABC News ” This week”.
“I would urge the Biden administration and Israel to hold Iran accountable for the fate of the remaining hostages and put Iran’s oil refineries on a target list if the hostages are not released,” he said.
He also criticized Harris for missing Netanyahu’s speech to Congress in July, saying he had boycotted it, “sending a signal to Hamas and Iran that America is really not with Israel.” At the time, Harris was scheduled to be in Indianapolis during Netanyahu’s speech on his then-presidential campaign, but met with Netanyahu privately later.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on X that he was “heartbroken” by the news of Goldberg-Polin’s death and urged Israel to “finish the job.”
“The news of Hersh Goldberg-Polin’s death at the hands of Hamas breaks my heart. The savages who killed this American citizen and continue to hold others hostage must pay a heavy price. Israel should get the job done to end this Iranian sponsored terror and America must support this effort without warning/conditions,” he wrote.
Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote to X that the hostages should “be home with their families,” but instead they were murdered.
“I am truly heartbroken by the deaths of several hostages held by Hamas, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. These innocent people should be home today with their families; instead, they were murdered by terrorists. My heart goes out to all the families of those who lost their lives, including the family of Goldberg-Polin, who met earlier this summer, McCaul wrote.
Members of Congress from both sides of the aisle skewered Hamas as an “organization of true evil,” “monsters” and “brutal, barbaric, religious Nazis.”
For months, the White House has been pushing for a ceasefire proposal that would lead to the release of the hostages. However, the negotiations have not been successful. As thousands of Israelis protested the hostage trade in the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday, American politicians repeated their call for the hostages to be returned home.
“Only a ceasefire will bring the hostages home safely, and every day without a deal puts their lives, the lives of Palestinians, and every innocent life in Gaza at risk,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Massa., said in X.
World leaders also expressed their horror and called for an end to the war.
French President Emmanuel Macron said at X that he felt “shock and outrage” and stressed that “there must be an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages, including his compatriots Ohad Yahalomi and Ofer Kalderon.”
“Canada stands with the families of the victims in your grief,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at X, adding that Hamas must have “no future in controlling Gaza.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said at X that the news was a “devastating reminder of the need to release all hostages and end the nightmare of war in Gaza.”
More than 1,200 people were killed in Israel and around 250 others, including six people whose bodies were found yesterday, were taken hostage in the October 7 terror attack by Hamas.

Qualcomm Quietly Introduces Snapdragon 6 Gen 3
Qualcomm’s latest chipset is called the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, and it quietly appeared on the company’s website over the weekend. The new mid-range platform takes over from the Snapdragon 6 Gen 1, as the company apparently forgot that there’s no second-generation version of the 4nm chip.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 brings improved AI performance for tasks like activity tracking and noise reduction during calls. The chip is really similar to the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 with some improvements in the CPU and display departments.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is equipped with an octa-core processor – four 2.4GHz Cortex-A78 cores and four 1.8GHz Cortex-A55 cores, which matches the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2’s configuration architecture, but drops slightly in performance core clock speeds (the 7s Gen 2 runs at 1.95GHz). Another difference is that the 6 Gen 3 supports displays with a resolution of up to Full HD+ at a refresh rate of 120Hz, rather than 144Hz like the 7s.
Qualcomm has used the Adreno 710 GPU, and the chip supports both the older LPDDR4X and newer LPDDR5 RAM versions, but only UFS 3.1 storage. Connectivity support on the new chip also includes Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E.
In terms of the camera, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 can support a single 48MP sensor for continuous reading, dual 32MP and 16MP sensors, or take photos at up to 200MP resolution.
Qualcomm has not released an official press release about the chipset and we do not know when the product will be available to OEMs.

Inside Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar’s son Gautham’s 18th Birthday Bash
New Delhi:
Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu and actor Namrata Shirodkar’s son Gautham Ghattamanen turned 18 on Saturday (August 31). The birthday boy celebrated the special occasion with his family and close friends. His younger sister Sitara Ghattamanen was also present. Namrata Shirodkar gave fans a glimpse of the intimate celebration by dropping a bunch of pictures on Instagram. In the first frame, Gautham is sitting in front of a birthday cake, smiling brightly. A candle numbered “18” was seen on top of a chocolate cake. Mahesh Babu, Namrata and Sitara stood behind Gautham looking at the camera and smiling from ear to ear. The photo carousel also features some of Gautham’s friends who attended the intimate birthday bash. Along with the post, Namrata wrote, “From last night. 18 years of loving and living (three black heart emojis)”.
Namrata Shirdokari’s sister Shilpa Shirodkar commented on the post, “Beautiful. Actor Chunky Panday also wished Gautham Ghattamanen a ‘Happy Birthday’ and added a cake and a red heart emoji.
Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar wished Gautham Ghattamanen a happy birthday by sharing separate messages on their Instagram timeline. In the picture posted by Namrata, the youngster was seen carrying a bag on his shoulders and smiling. The photo appears to have been taken from New York University, where Gautham is pursuing higher education. The side note read: “To new beginnings! Happy birthday son. It’s a big deal for you and us as proud parents! Shine bright be happy and stay blessed always. Love you son.”
Sharing a smiling picture of Gautham Ghattamanen, Mahesh Babu captioned, “Happy 18 year old boy. Explore and enjoy this time. I love you very much. I am a proud father today.”
Sitara Ghattamane’s birthday wish for Gautham Ghattamanen was wonderful in every way. Dropping a photo with her older brother on social media, she wrote: “Happy birthday, I love you.” In the click, the brother-sister duo poses at the airport with Sitara’s thumb.
Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar got married in 2005. The couple became the proud parents of Gautham Ghattamane in 2006. They welcomed Sitara Ghattamanen in 2012.
I’m afraid that in a film about PiS, Mariusz Błaszczak will be the “final girl” in the last scene
If someone were to make a film about PiS, they would use this idea, although I fear that in the last scene the last girl will be Mariusz Błaszczak. No woman could survive the purges, moods and eccentricities of the main character. Such thoughts have been haunting me for months, or more precisely, ever since Jarosław Kaczyński began selecting candidates for the post of the country’s top official. “Candidates”, because women were eliminated even before Kaczyński began to think about it. When asked a few days ago by Radio Maryja about the list of candidates, the president pointed to his head and then added that “in this time of war, we thought that a woman would not have much of a chance” and that “it is difficult for me to imagine even the model of this lady who would be such a candidate.” He then explained that “it is obvious for a man – he has to be young, tall, impressive, handsome. (…) He has to have a family. It is better that he knows two languages and is internationally familiar.”
Let’s leave aside the question of where these strict criteria (two languages? international education?) were a decade ago, when the president appointed Andrzej Duda, the fate of PiS women seems more interesting to me. After all, in a party that has no obvious candidate and has produced several popular politicians, it seems obvious that they will at least be taken into account.
I’m afraid that in a film about PiS, Mariusz Błaszczak is the “final girl” in the last scene. No woman could survive the purges, moods and eccentricities of the main character.
In these pages, Jacek Gądek and Andrzej Stankiewicz have already written about the way the president treated Beata Szydło, emphasizing that it was not just marginalization, but even humiliation of the former prime minister. And we are talking about a dedicated figure (she was responsible for the legendary 1:27 defeat in the election of the head of the European Council), beloved by the electorate, the face of PiS’s social programs, who happened to win a seat in the European Parliament thanks to the support of half a million people. Seriously, there was a time when Szydło was second only to Duda in the trust rating.
Elżbieta Witek, the country’s second-ranking official, has been aspiring to a grand palace for several years. She is also a figurehead for the so-called. After all, the distinguished figure of the United Right as Marshal of the Sejm recapitulated the votes at every request and, in short, had every right to count on the recapitulation to grant her the highest honors, including the presidency.
That neither Szydło nor Witek are suitable? OK, I won’t argue, but – let’s repeat – PiS has no obvious candidate. Everyone needs to be promoted, and it is possible that Kaczyński will choose a less recognizable figure than his former prime minister and marshal. What matters most to me is the president’s attitude: “A woman? No, because not.”
I know that the phenomenon is deeper and does not only concern PiS. That even if Rafał Trzaskowski decided to run only after the construction of the tram to Wilanów was completed, which would probably eliminate him not only from the race in 2025 but also in 2030, if Radosław Sikorski decided that the presidency did not satisfy his ambitions, the governing party would still not put up a woman. Only if Prime Minister Donald Tusk decided that he was not interested in taking care of the chandelier would PO politicians have the slightest chance of being nominated. The difference is that PO has an obvious candidate and does not make the elimination of women a rallying cry.
In any case, we are still stuck with some patriarchal whims, probably the president’s opinion (and this is not his defense, to be clear) was influenced by some polls that showed that according to the nation, the “head of state” should be a man.
Perhaps this is also what is at stake in the US elections: a decade ago, Donald Trump showed the way to populists around the world, perhaps Kamala Harris’s triumph shows that a woman can also be president. That if he is fit to run a nuclear power plant, he can also run Krakowskie Przedmieście.

A heated throw ‘perfect for a cozy stay’ under £35
A good heated blanket can be a game changer on cold nights – and it can also save you a lot of money on your heating bills. After all, it is much cheaper to put electricity in the blanket than to heat the boiler and heat entire rooms in the home.
So if you’re looking for a good heated blanket as the weather slowly but surely turns colder, we may have just found the deal for you. At Debenhams you can grab the Fineway Electric Heated Throw for just £34.99, a saving of over 50% on its £79.99 full price.
For this price, you get a 160x130cm gray blanket with a wonderfully soft fleece finish, which is perfect for snuggling up. It has a simple plug-in control system with a detachable remote control that lets you choose the heat intensity and even set a timer to turn off the blanket after up to nine hours of use.
Even better, it’s machine washable, which you might not have thought of with an electric blanket in the first place – but it makes life so much easier. All this, and it’s stylish design that instantly makes the room cozier.
Almost 40 people have left a review for the blanket on the Debenhams site, with an average of these reviews averaging an impressive 4.5 stars. Of these posts, one happy user said: “My partner works from home and it’s perfect for wrapping him up while he taps away on his laptop. Saves the entire room from heating and says it’s a game changer. Great for snuggling up on the couch and watching TV.”
Another customer wrote: “Really happy with this purchase. It keeps me nice and warm and stops me using a hot water bottle.” A third user said: “Excellent quality for the price, have bought other well known brands but really rate this one.”
However, some shoppers have expressed concern, with one warning that it “takes a while to warm up.” Another said that “the color was more black than gray,” which is worth knowing if you’re planning around a certain color scheme.
Heated blankets are very popular now, so there are plenty of other options out there if you want to shop around. Lakeland actually have a sale in this category – including £14 off this StaySnug Velvety Green Electric Heated Throw, now £55.99. Another option is to go for a bedtime treat by getting a heated mattress protector that adds built-in heating – like this Dreamland Organic Cotton Double Heated Mattress Protector with a £124.99 price tag.
wPolce24 new terrestrial station, television, how to watch programs, reviews
On Monday, September 2, on the basis of the license granted by the National Broadcasting Council in June, the wPolsce24 channel will start broadcasting on the eighth digital terrestrial television multiplex. The new news and journalistic station, with a cosmetic change in name, will replace the existing television owned by the Karnowski brothers’ company Fratria – wPolsce.pl. However, much bigger changes are coming down the pipeline.
The wPolsce24 team was joined by faces from the former TVP (Michał Adamczyk, Magdalena Ogórek, Marta Kielczyk, Maciej Tulicki, Jacek Łęski and Małgorzata Opczowska), and the schedule included announcements of programmes not so much inspired by old formats (such as “Polityka in the dessert”, which is equivalent to “In the depths of vision” from TVP Info, which directly refers to them). For example, the channel’s main news format, broadcast at 19:30, will be called “Wiadomości” (the team leader will be Maciej Tulicki, former deputy director of the Television Information Agency), and will be hosted by Michał Adamczyk and Marta Kielczyk, former presenters of this programme on TVP1.

Does the new channel, promoted by the stars of the former TVP, have a chance of expanding the audience it can now reach via terrestrial television? The commentators we asked for their opinion on this subject were quite sceptical. They point out that in Poland 24 will be competing for the same viewers as TV Republika or Trwam, and that the competition is fierce.
Tomasz Sakiewicz’s broadcast, which was already shown at the multiplex in July, is currently the second largest audience among news channels (TVN24 is in first place according to July data from Nielsen Audience Measurement). On average, Telewizja Republika attracted 192,000 viewers (in the 4+ group), leaving Telewizja wPolsce.pl, whose average result in this group is only 16,000 viewers, far behind (the difference is 175 thousand viewers).
Barełkowski on wPolsce24: controversial and well-coordinated faces will weigh on the future of the project
– No doubt, wPolska24 is closing [na nowego widza – red.]and this is due to the division of viewer clans in Poland – comments Piotr Barełkowski, president of Telewizja Media Narodowe, former co-founder of Telewizja wPolsce.pl and TV Republika, in an interview with the Wirtualnemedia.pl portal. – Either viewers support one side of the political scene, Law and Justice, and this is TV Republika and wPolska24, which is starting on a larger scale, or they support the left side, and these are the viewers of TVN24 and TVP. When choosing contributors from the former TVP, wPolce24 chose one of the clans, which somewhat limited the possibility of reaching and gaining fans among these viewers. We are talking about supporters, for example, of the Confederation, we are talking about undecided voters, and we are talking perhaps about some supporters of the current government – Barełkowski notes.
Contrary to the statements of the creators of the new station about a “balanced message without political fervor”, our interlocutor has considerable doubts about this. – As a conservative and a voter on the right side of the political scene, I would very much like the future offspring of wPolsce24 television to be just like that, more nuanced, more ideological and not oriented towards party propaganda. However, the selection of authors raises some doubts – emphasizes Barełkowski, adding that “the disadvantage of being closed and having very united and controversial faces from the former TVP will certainly weigh on the future and the possibilities of development of this project”.
Łukasz Warzecha, a columnist for the weekly “Do Rzeczy”, also criticizes the participation of former TVP stars in the Karnowski brothers’ television and has no doubt that wPolsce24 will want to reach the same audience as TV Republika.

Former faces of TVP wPolsce24. “Addressing the concrete PiS electorate”
– The group of viewers that Republika is currently fighting for and that the Karnowski brothers want to fight for is the same group. They are the ones who watched the old TVP with passion and now it is a question of giving something back. However, the strategy adopted by both entities does not, in my opinion, imply any attempts to expand the group of former TVP viewers who remained with this station until it was taken over by the current government. And there were many centre-right viewers who gave up on the old TVP because they could not watch it. Neither TV Republika nor the Karnowski brothers have any proposal for them. However, we have a return, but under different circumstances, to the rivalry between the Karnowski brothers and Tomasz Sakiewicz. Previously, it was a competition for state money. Now there will be competition without state money, but for the same closed audience, mainly the strong PiS electorate, this time on terrestrial television. – says Warzecha, stressing that the former faces of TVP can only encourage the most loyal voters of Jarosław Kaczyński’s party.
– Michał Adamczyk is one of the most discredited figures of the former TVP. Therefore, this is clearly an appeal to the hard-core and even concrete PiS electorate. This kind of program has no chance of reaching any group other than the radical PiS supporters, especially with this person.
The columnist for the weekly “Do Rzeczy” also draws attention to another challenge facing wPolsce24, namely the financing of the station. – We must remember that launching such a television station costs a lot of money. Therefore, the question is whether this money is on the market. It is easy to do something like this when you have government money, but without it it is much more difficult, he notes.
Finances will determine Poland’s success24
Bogusław Chrabota from Rzeczpospolita also draws attention to money as a key element in the success of the Karnowskis’ new project. – Of course, the target audience is quite large. They will certainly have viewers, albeit with a distinct loss to the fast-paced TV Republika. It will be worse with advertising, because it will be difficult to convince viewers to pay another subscription fee, and free-to-air television costs money. Big costs. Not only the program, the technology, but also the fees for frequencies, broadcasting network, etc. Without significant resources, it will be difficult to maintain it during the first seasons. Sakiewicz will not help either, the editor-in-chief of the daily emphasizes.
– Of course, the faces of the former TVP will help, but I don’t know if Kurski factotum is ready for such an ordeal as launching a new channel. I’ve been through this many times, so I know how hard it is. In my opinion, the channel will survive if it finds funding for two or three years. It will not be able to survive without a reliable investor. The competition is also significant: Trwam and Republika. It is a danger for them, says our interlocutor.
Funding the wPolsce24 channel
We remind you that the terrestrial broadcasting license will cost the creators of wPolsce24 almost PLN 18 million (the payment was divided into ten installments) plus PLN 6 million annually for Emitel. In the financial assumptions included in the license application, the station owner submitted full financial documentation for himself and for partners who held more than 10 percent. shares in the Applicant’s share capital – Apella SA, Spółdzielczy Instytut Naukowy G. Bierecki Sp. j. and Mr. Jacek Karnowski.
The project’s financing sources included the Proponent’s own resources and resources from a long-term loan from the partner, Apella SA – we read in the concession. Apella’s supervisory board includes Senator for Law and Justice Grzegorz Bierecki, founder and long-time chairman of the National Savings and Credit Cooperative (SKOK).

The loan agreement was concluded at the beginning of May this year, and the National Broadcasting Council concluded that the terrestrial license applicant had sufficiently documented the possibilities of financing a new television project.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is deep in campaign mode. But not his.
The three-term mayor, whose name is being floated as a possible Democratic candidate for Michigan governor, knows the value of backing him and his majority Black City Vice President Kamala Harris in November’s presidential election.
Duggan, like some other big-city mayors across the country, is using his political clout to help mobilize voters in his city when Harris visits Labor Day events Monday for Democrats and his running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim. Waltz.
Mayors are usually elected on a partisan basis, and policies reflect the views of the majority of voters in their city. Of the 20 largest cities in the United States by population, only Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, have Republican mayors.
Mayors “know what’s at stake,” said Columbus, Ohio, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther, a Democrat who adds that he is “all vice president.”
For Duggan, it’s all about the choice between Harris and Walz.
Michigan is one of the top state prizes Harris and Republican nominee former President Donald Trump will compete for this fall, knowing Trump won the state by less than 11,000 votes in 2016 before losing it to President Joe Biden in 2020 by about 150,000 votes.
Detroit, Michigan’s largest city, is one of the nation’s biggest Democratic strongholds, and its city clerk said turnout is expected to exceed 50 percent of registered voters in the general election.
Shortly after Biden withdrew from this year’s presidential race, Duggan endorsed Harris. According to the Harris campaign, an August rally in the Detroit area drew 15,000 people. Trump later falsely claimed that the image of thousands of people waiting at the airport for a protest was produced with the help of artificial intelligence.
City Clerk Janice Winfrey said at least 55% of Detroit’s registered voters could vote in November. About 51 percent of registered voters voted for Barack Obama when he ran for president, Winfrey said.
“Everybody wants to be involved,” said Winfrey, adding that Duggan’s involvement in reaching out to voters extended to his support for a 40 percent increase in his budget.
But it’s more than popularity that makes mayors cozy up to current and future presidents. Communities rely on millions of federal dollars for everything from infrastructure projects to hiring police officers.
“We have to get things done,” said Ginther, who also serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. “There’s no way for Republicans or Democrats to pick up trash, plow streets, or keep people safe. One of the most important platforms is housing. That’s by far the most important thing for the mayors of this country, whether Donald Trump is elected or the vice president is president.
Over the past five years, Detroit has invested approximately $1 billion to build more than 4,600 affordable housing units in the city. Federal, state and city funds helped pay for these projects.
“Each mayor makes his own decision,” Duggan said. “Cities have done very well under Biden/Harris.”
Detroit was awarded about $706.5 million in federal grant funding under the Trump White House. The Biden administration has granted and committed more than $2 billion to the city, according to Duggan’s office.
The American Rescue Plan, Biden’s signature 2021 federal coronavirus relief measure that included funds for state, city and tribal governments, “probably accelerated Detroit’s recovery by 10 years,” Duggan said.
Appointed a decade ago by Michigan’s then-Republican governor, the leader steered a city deeply in debt and running multimillion-dollar annual budget deficits. Under Duggan, the city’s finances have stabilized and budget surpluses are now the norm.
“The American Rescue Plan allowed us to rebuild our cities faster,” Duggan said. “When Donald Trump ran for president, he promised big infrastructure but never delivered anything.
The nation’s housing crisis should be foremost on the minds of mayors, both Democrats and Republicans, said Analilia Mejia, director of the nonprofit Center for People’s Democracy.
“I think we’re going to see that it’s not just mayors who are doing what’s right and smart when they’re engaging their constituents and telling them what’s in their best interest,” Mejia said.
Mesa, Arizona, Mayor John Giles is also urging voters to vote for Harris. Giles, a Republican who has defected from Trump, was among several GOP politicians who spoke on behalf of Harris at last month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Giles said he has had more contact with the Biden administration than the Trump administration, which he attributes to Trump working more closely with governors.
“It seems around election time that mayors become more engaged in partisan politics than usual,” Giles said. “We want to establish good relations with the future administration. It is in the interests of our cities.”
But Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, a fellow Republican, sees things differently. The former Democrat, who focused on the GOP’s tough-on-crime approach, told attendees at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July that he wants to help get Trump back in the White House.
Kwame Kilpatrick, who spent five years in the Michigan State House and seven years as mayor of Detroit, said all mayors just hope to get to the White House.
Kilpatrick also served more than seven years of a 28-year federal prison sentence for corruption while mayor. Kilpatrick, whose sentence was commuted by Trump in 2021, now works as a political consultant. Kilpatrick, a lifelong Democrat, said he supports Trump’s re-election bid and is registering as an independent.
“Mayors rarely have to pick up the phone and call Washington, but when they pick up the phone, they want access to the Washington board if necessary,” said Kilpatrick, who resigned as Detroit mayor in 2008 after a text-message sex scandal.
For his part, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, a Democrat, said he is working to engage his city’s voters this election cycle and is “100%, without question” behind the Harris/Walz ticket.
“I’ve challenged the people in our community who can vote, vote and don’t vote,” Johnson said. “I talk to the people on the ground about the stakes. Democracy is not a spectator sport. It is a contact sport.”
