Indonesia also bans the sale of Google Pixel phones
Indonesia just banned the sale of Google Pixel phones days after doing so the same with the iPhone 16 devices. The reason remains the same – the company failed to provide 40% content, so its units will be blocked from getting a certificate to work in the Asian country.
Local media outlet Kontan reported that 22,000 pixels are already in the country via personal shipments or hand luggage, citing an Industry Ministry spokesman after a press briefing.
40% local content must be provided through local production of products, local software development or establishment of local research and development centers. Some analysts believe that Indonesia implements such restrictive policies to get more investment from foreign companies.
Indonesia is currently the largest economy in Southeast Asia with a GDP of over $1 trillion. It is a major growth market for smartphone sales and expectations are that there could be as many as 350 million active mobile phones, far more than the country’s 285 million population.
Indonesian authorities say eight have died at a cooking oil factory near Jakarta. From Reuters
JAKARTA (Reuters) – Eight people died in a major fire at an oil factory near the Indonesian capital Jakarta, local fire officials said on Friday.
About 20 fire trucks are at the scene and have brought the fire under control in most parts of the factory, authorities said.
Footage from Metro TV showed flames and billowing black smoke coming from a building in the center of an industrial complex in Bekasi, a city on the eastern edge of Jakarta. The report said roads around the factory were closed.
All bodies have been evacuated from the scene, Suhartono, head of the Bekasi fire department, told Reuters, adding that three other people were injured.
But the death toll could still rise, he said.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
The factory is operated by PT Primus Sanus Cooking Oil Industrial (Priscolin), Suhartono said.

Several homes have been lost due to a large fire in Rotterdam
The North Island fire initially broke out on the third floor on Thursday night. The fire flared up again around 3:35 a.m., then on the second floor.
