How we went from gaslighting to authentic

From gaslighting, we have moved to authentic.

Authentic is the Merriam-Webster word for 2023. Gaslighting was the word of the year in 2022. The search for authenticity reached new heights this year.

“We see in 2023 a kind of crisis of authenticity,” Merriam-Webster’s editor-at-large, Peter Sokolowski, told the Associated Press. “What we realise is that when we question authenticity, we value it even more.”

Merriam-Webster does not analyse the reasons why people look up one word or the other. But it’s not hard to guess why we are anxious about authenticity these days. Actors Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif and Kajol have all fallen prey to deepfakes. A woman with the morphed face of Bhatt showed up making obscene gestures while deepfake Kajol was seen changing clothes in front of the camera. ChatGPT has made it hard to figure out whether students are turning in papers that are really their work. While editing a book, a friend discovered that an entire chapter was written using ChatGPT, complete with authentic-sounding references that didn’t really exist.

Sports Illustrated magazine carried articles by a Drew Ortiz whose bio said, “Drew has spent much of his life outdoors and is excited to guide you through his never-ending list of the best products to keep you from falling to the perils of nature.” Then it turned out Ortiz didn’t really exist and his profile picture can be found for sale on a website that sells AI-generated headshots. This one comes with a description that reads “neutral white young-adult male with short brown hair and blue eyes”. Ortiz is an AI-generated author. After Sports Illustrated was questioned about the AI-generated content by the site Futurism, all those articles vanished without explanation.

The interesting thing is there is nothing particularly 2023 about the search for authenticity. At one time it was a form of cultural snobbery. I remember non-resident Indians (NRIs) debating endlessly about restaurants in the US that served authentic Indian food as opposed to watered-down versions meant for Westerners. Yet the fact is that sometimes those versions tasted pretty good, inauthentic as they were.

In Kolkata, where I live now, food snobs discuss which restaurants offer authentic Bangladeshi food as opposed to generic Bengali menus and the subtle ways in which you can tell the difference. Authentic handicrafts. Authentic textiles. Authentic masala mixes. Authenticity (or rather the ability to discern it) was a mark of sophistication akin to the skills of a tea taster or oenophile.

But the new preoccupation about what is authentic is more about anxiety than skill. In a way, it’s quite fitting that wordwise we have gone from gaslighting to authentic. Gaslighting is about manipulating someone so that they question their own sanity or reasoning, where someone does something abusive but then pretends the victim imagined it all. It is but a natural progression because once we have been gaslit enough, we obviously lose all sense of what is authentic and what is not.

Now many of us are waking up to the dangers of AI. Even Elon Musk, who dismantled much of the misinformation safeguards that had been put in place on Twitter (now X), has urged for a moratorium on AI development to figure out shared safety protocols. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called misuse of AI and deepfake videos a “big concern” and Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has promised to appoint an officer who will take action against such con tent.

Yet the fact is many politicians all over the world have thrived by passing off fake news as authentic. Former US president Donald Trump was a master at dubbing everyone who tried to debunk his claims as purveyors of fake news themselves. That in itself was a form of gaslighting too and now we have lost all our bearings. We are rudderless boats in a sea of misinformation with no compass since mainstream media is no longer regarded as any kind of objective arbiter. Once WhatsApp forwards replaced news outlets as “authentic” sources of news, there was no going back any more. You can expose one lie but that does not change the existing biases out there.

What I have begun to only dimly understand is that you cannot puncture these alternate realities with authentic facts. The alternate reality is more about emotion, feeding the recipient what they want to believe. Trying to pull down that edifice by fact-checking is tough. Alternate realities coexist even though we all think we have the same set of facts. Shivam Shankar Singh, co-author of The Art Of Conjuring Alternate Realities, pointed out in a 2021 interview: “Every version of reality had different buy-ins at different points of time. Flat earth had more buy-in than the earth being round at one point of time. But then the world being round gained more momentum because of scientific evidence and that became the dominant reality. But even now there are people who believe the earth is flat.”

In fact, Singh said “a lot more separate alternate realities exist now than they did previously because previously the sources of information that people consumed were pretty similar”. Now that is not true and social media has ramped up the speed of dissemination and consumption exponentially. At one time, only a powerful state or the Catholic Church could conjure up that alternate reality. Now someone sitting in their bedroom can create deepfake videos that can go viral as authentic.

We are all in favour of finding our authentic selves but do we really know when we have found it?

When Alice went down the rabbit hole in Wonderland and kept changing size, she wondered at some point, “Who in the world am I?” When identity politics gained ground, there was a great push for everyone to find their authentic selves. That was the whole point of coming out and Gay Pride, for example. The idea was we didn’t have to keep our authentic selves in the closet any more.

But now we see the flip side of the same coin. The liberal cultural police and its cancel culture, once the pioneers of the push towards authenticity, eventually became intolerant of everyone who could not keep up with their standards. But is it just as okay then to bring one’s racist self or casteist self out of the closet and claim we are just being authentic? In the name of authenticity, can we excuse songs that exhort their listeners to play loud aggressive Hindutva rap right outside a mosque so minorities can be shown their place? Or peddle misinformation and paranoia in the name of education in some madrasa?

As someone who left India as a student and came back 20 years later, I have always been suspicious of authenticity. As an immigrant, I spent much time trying to chase down the authentic flavours of a home left behind and sneering at the pumpkin spice chai lattes. Yet every time I returned, I faced questions about whether I was an authentic Indian any more. We fought for the right to be our authentic selves to be free of the standard society laid down for us. But now we have come full circle as we realise that authenticity can be its own prison, laying down its own Lakshmanrekha that we cannot cross.

We are in the end hybrid creatures, mixed up in many ways, yet to understand there is no one-size-fits-all authenticity. India is as authentic as Bharat or Hindustan. Recently, we were in thick of a family wedding and for months there was heated conversation about what were authentic must-do Bengali Hindu wedding rituals and which were inauthentic, optional ones. Each side had their own versions and the more people we asked, the more the rituals kept piling up. More “authentic items” kept getting added to the wedding tray list till my sister said we should stop asking anyone. I even finally learnt how to wear a dhoti so I could pull off the authentic Bengali babu look.

Eventually, I found myself going to a wet fish market and picking up a 3.5kg rohu fish dressed as a bride, with a paan stuffed in its mouth and a nose-ring. I don’t even like rohu fish but authenticity demanded I do this.

And as we drove across town, balancing that giant rohu precariously on our laps, I felt momentarily that I could pass off as an authentic Bengali. And then it just smelt fishy.

Cult Friction is a fortnightly column on issues we keep rubbing up against. Sandip Roy is a writer, journalist and radio host. He posts @sandipr.

Tamil Nadu rains: Chennai likely to receive heavy rainfall amid Cyclone Michaung alert | Check IMD full forecast here

Parts of Tamil Nadu continue to witness heavy rainfall in the wake of an alert over Cyclone Michaung. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted very heavy to heavy rains in some parts of the state on Friday, issuing yellow and orange alerts in some areas.

Meanwhile, high tides were witnessed in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ (pronounced Migjaum). Paddy crop was also damaged in Chengalpattu due to heavy rainfall, news agency PTI said.

Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall on December 5 near coastal Andhra. It is brewing in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to cross the coasts of northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh around December 4 evening.

“Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a Cyclonic Storm MICHAUNG 0530 hrs IST 3rd Dec over the same region about 300 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 310 km southeast of Chennai, 440 km southeast of Nellore and 550 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam,” the IMD posted on X.

The weather department further added that Cyclone Michaung, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam with winds that could pack speeds of up to 100 kmph on Tuesday morning.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a cyclone alert for Andhra Pradesh and adjoining North Tamil Nadu coasts for the next 12 hours.

The looming cyclonic storm over the Southwest Bay of Bengal prompted meteorological authorities to issue a comprehensive rainfall warning for several regions in southern and eastern India. Rainfall intensity is set to increase from Friday, with most places experiencing rain and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely on December 5 but is likely to ease off thereafter.

Israel-Hamas War Day 58: World leaders call for fresh truce deal as death toll crosses 15,000 in Gaza | Top 10 updates

Israel-Hamas war: Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are continuing the large-scale airstrikes against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip as the world leaders deliberate to bring both parties back to the negotiating table. Since Friday morning, when the true deal collapsed, at least 240 Palestinians have been reported to be killed in the Gaza Strip with the overall death toll crossing 15,000. Israel has shifted the focus of bombardments to southern Gaza and ruled out any talks with Hamas about the ceasefire.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hints at escalation of Israel-Hamas war: 10 updates

1. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday suggested that they are preparing for an escalation of its war against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. “We will continue the war until we achieve all its goals, and it’s impossible to achieve those goals without the ground operation,” he said in a televised conference.

2. The IDF has shifted its focus to the areas around southern Gaza especially Khan Younis which can make the humanitarian efforts more challenging as around 1.8 million civilians of Gaza fled towards the south to avoid Israeli bombardments.

3. Israeli defense spokesperson said that the terrorists from Gaza continue their attacks on the Israeli territory and since the breakdown of the ceasefire, more than 250 rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza

4. The world leaders continue to express their concern over the rising death toll in Gaza with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken asking Israel to do whatever possible to protect civilian lives in Gaza. Similar warnings came from US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin who said that Israel is risking “strategic defeat” in case it fails to stop the rising civilian death toll.

5. US Vice-President Kamala Harris was more blunt with her take and said “As Israel defends itself, it matters how. The United States is unequivocal international humanitarian law must be respected. Too many innocent Palestinians have been killed. Frankly, the scale of civilian suffering and the images and videos coming from Gaza are devastating.” the Vice-President added.

6. The UK is planning to carry out unarmed surveillance flights over the Middle Eastern region to find the locations of its citizens held hostage by Hamas. A BBC report quoted the Ministry of Defence of the country which said “The safety of British nationals is our utmost priority.”

7. French President Emmanuel Macron will likely head to Qatar to get both Israel and Hamas back to the truce deal. The leader said that Israel’s objective to completely eliminate Hamas risks decades of war.

8. The United Nations and various humanitarian organizations have consistently raised alarms about an impending humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to a shortage of essential resources such as food, clean water, and medical assistance.

9. Israel is denying the reports that it is blocking the humanitarian aid into Gaza. “We will facilitate the entrance into the Gaza strip of humanitarian support for the civilians of Gaza,” Mark Regev, special adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

10. Mark Regev added that Israel has set up a number of safe zones for civilians but accused Hamas terrorists of using civilians as human shields.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: INDIA bloc’s seat-sharing on cards? Congress calls for Opposition meeting on 6 December

The Mallikarjun Kharge-led Congress has called for a meeting of the Opposition INDIA bloc meeting in national capital Delhi on 6 December. According to news agency ANI, Kharge dialed his alliance partners for a meet in Delhi on 6 December.

Will this be the meet to discuss seat sharing between the INDIA bloc members?

On 25 October, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had said that INDIA bloc seat sharing is likely to be declared after the 5-state elections. Mallikarjun Kharge, while speaking on INDIA Alliance seat-sharing, said, “We will see this. Let the 5-state elections take place first…”

The move comes on the day India is witnessing the result of four crucial Assembly elections- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.

After wresting Karnataka from the BJP in May, the Congress is eyeing Madhya Pradesh and Telangana and is hoping to retain power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. An impressive performance in these polls will boost the party’s standing in the opposition INDIA bloc which has been formed to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The INDIA bloc had convened a meeting in September to discuss formulas for seat sharing for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. As per the report, the seat-sharing formula will be based on the performance of parties in past elections and the strength of the largest party that is a member of the grouping in every state. However, the bloc has not made any announcement related to seat-sharing so far.

Earlier in November, Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar had blamed the Mallikarjun Kharge-led Congress for the Opposition INDIA bloc loosing steam ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. The Bihar Chief Minister said that the Congress was “busy with the five-state elections” and therefore the INDIA bloc had been put on the backburner for now.

Nitish Kumar had organised the first INDIA bloc meet in Patna. The INDIA bloc is comprised of 28 parties, including JD (U), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) among others.

Further reports had also emerged of an increasing strife between INDIA bloc’s Congress and Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi party. The tussle between the Congress and Samajwadi party remained a reflection of the widening internal rivalry among member parties of the INDIA block.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah had in October said that the situation within the opposition INDIA bloc was not good.

Heavy snow in Bavaria, flights and long-distance trains in Munich cancelled

Heavy snowfall in Bavaria prompted an all-day cancellation of flights and long-distance trains out of Munich, with Christmas markets closed, some ski lifts unable to run and a football match called off as the city battled with the icy conditions.

Flights were not scheduled to depart or arrive at Munich airport until at least 6 a.m. (0500 GMT) on Sunday according to a statement on its website.

“Everything is closed. Online doesn’t work. Well, you have to be patient… there’s nothing you can do,” Magda Shokosa, a stranded passenger at Munich Airport, said.

“We had to dig our way into the car park with shovels and then take a taxi because the buses weren’t running,” said another passenger, Brigitte Schloessel.

Trains could not arrive at Munich’s central train station, Deutsche Bahn said on its website. The halt was expected to last all day, it added, with considerable delays expected until Monday.

Local media reported numerous transport accidents and traffic jams on icy roads, with the German Weather Service estimating 30-40 cm of snow would fall by Saturday evening.

A Bundesliga match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin was also postponed due to the heavy snowfall.

Still, some Munich residents were cheerier about the wintry atmosphere created by the snowfall, with parents pulling their children along on sleds.

“Finally snow again. I think it’s great because it’s a bit quieter. It’s a nicer atmosphere overall,” said Friedrich Zeller as he walked through the snowy streets.

A note on the issue: Explore on foot and with food

Viewing a city through the lens of food is a good way to understand its socioeconomic history

The nights have been getting chillier over the last few weeks, and in most parts of the country, the weather is now perfect for long rambles through the city in search of stories, books, music, food or history. A great way to learn about the city you live in—whether it has been your home for decades or you moved in three weeks ago—is to sign up for a guided food walk. Many food tours have, unfortunately, become a reason to overeat at the most popular restaurants, but thoughtfully created walks can be an immersion in a city’s culture.

Viewing a city through the lens of its food is not only a way to learn about the best places to eat but also to understand its socioeconomic history. Our cover story brings together curated walks that reveal a different side to cities, and serve as a guide to helping you find similarly unusual tours in your own city, or any other you might visit.

In Kolkata, for instance, a mishti walk leads you through its century-old neighbourhoods, the labour of its sweet-makers, and a way of life that’s slowly disappearing. In Mumbai, we lead you on walks that will give you a glimpse of the city’s prohibition era, its rapid growth and urbanisation fuelled by a construction boom, and its unusual drinking habits and watering holes. In Goa, rather than just hit the beach and the bars, you could also spend a day learning about the state’s indigenous communities through food tours.

In this same spirit of exploration, we have a story on “empty nesters”, or couples whose children have left home, who have chosen to take long road trips and tick off their bucket list of things-to-do rather than wait for their now-independent kids to call on them. We also have an interview with Twinkle Khanna, who has reinvented herself time and again; she’s now earned a master’s degree in writing and has published another book of short stories, which she discusses with Lounge. Besides this, we have our regular line-up of stories and reviews of streaming shows, books, music, style, food and culture.

It comes ahead of the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the Chhattisgarh Assembly Election results on December 3. Two phases of voting were conducted for 90 members of the Legislative Assembly. Elections were held in two phases on November 7 and November 17. Voting in phase one was completed on November 7 and voting in phase two was completed on November 17.

Earlier in November, Livemint reported one jawan of the CRPF CoBRA Battalion was injured in an IED blast triggered by Naxals in the Tondamarka area of Sukma district on the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly election 2023. Kunta Assembly constituency is voting today, on November 7, in the first phase of Chhattisgarh Assembly election. Sukma SP Kiran Chavan has said that the soldier was deployed for election duty.

It was reported the same day that another Naxal-triggered attack had taken place in an Assembly constituency in one of the districts of Chhattisgarh, just a day before the first phase of the Chhattisgarh Assembly elections was due to begin. An IED blast triggered by Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district injured two polling officials and a member of the Border Security Force (BSF).
