Are Paper Books Sacrosanct?

Lauren Conrad, infamously of The Hills, had a Youtube video of her demonstrating how to hollow out books to make a small storage item. Home stores sell these fake hallowed out books by the crateful. Yet, there was a huge number of negative comments for Conrad’s video protesting the destruction of these books and the video was ultimately taken down.

Yet one of the most viral things in the book community in 2011 were paper sculptures secretly left around Scotland, which while cool, also resulted...

REVIEW: Within Reach by Sarah Mayberry

Dear Ms. Mayberry,

Years ago I saw a made for TV movie called The Substitute Wife. Set in “Pioneer Times,” it starred Lea Thompson as a woman with four children who knows she’s dying. She’s determined to find someone to replace her and ultimately brings home a hooker with a heart of gold played by rather subdued Farrah Fawcett. That plot appealed to me then and it appeals to me now. I love the idea a wife leaving this world could pick her successor. When I was younger, I gave this some thought...

This was what Hannah missed. Cool windy days in summer. Walks along the beach scattered with rocks, the occasional lava stones, seaweed and starfish. Seals and otters spying them on the shore and curiously watching as...

REVIEW: Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally

Dear Ms. Kenneally:

I can’t recall how this book came to my attention. It may have been Elyssa Papa who sends me links to books that feature football. It may have popped up on Goodreads. I’m not a huge YA reader and thus it isn’t a book that I would come across in my normal book browsing.

Catching JordanJordan Woods isn’t just one of the guys. She is the starting quarterback for her very prominent, very successful high school. This is not a story of a girl earning respect from her male colleagues. She has bee...

REVIEW: A Civil Contract by Georgette Heyer

Dear Readers,

Sourcebooks is having a sale on Georgette Heyer ebooks this week (August 14-20), so I thought it would be a good time for another Heyer review. I noticed that A Civil Contract is one of the books on sale, and I’ve been wanting to write about it. Heyer fans really split on this book, as you can see in the comment thread to my review of Sprig Muslin. Ros said that it was a favorite of hers because “the love it depicts is more romantic than any whirlwind adventure. Real love is so o...

Friday Film Review: Little Manhattan

Little Manhattan (2005)

Genre: Coming of Age Romance/Comedy

Grade: B

I’ll be honest and say I took a chance on this one. I didn’t recognize any of the actors or the director and frankly given the subject matter, it could have turned out to be a disaster. But “Little Manhattan” ended up sneaking under my guard and winning me over. Here’s fair warning that the ending isn’t HEA or even HFN but, jeez, we are talking two kids who are only 10 ¾ and 11 years old. The film also asks the question – “Whic...

Resistances to the proposed settlement by the DOJ, Hachette, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster

On August 15, 2012, parties to the lawsuit were allowed to file a resistance, no longer than five pages, to the DOJ’s request that the court approve the proposed settlement between itself and three publishers. B&N and ABA were allowed to file amicus curea briefs (or friend of the court briefs), also limited to five pages. The Authors Guild filed a motion to file an amicus brief as well as did Bob Kohn, CEO of RoyaltyShare, a company that offers auditing services to publishers. I covered only...
