REVIEW: Hidden Paradise by Janet Mullany
Dear Ms. Mullany,
I’ve had great success reading your Regency-set romances, and a bit less success with a couple of your other books. Still, the blurb for Hidden Paradise drew me in:
Louisa Connelly, a recently widowed Jane Austen scholar, needs some relief from her stifling world. When a friend calls to offer her a temporary escape from her Montana ranch, she is whisked into a dizzying world of sumptuous food, flowing wine…and endless temptation. She’s an honored guest at Paradise Hall, an Eng...
REVIEW: Naked Games by Anne Rainey
Dear Ms. Rainey:
I am a logical person ergo I like my books to make sense. When characters do something, I want to understand them, see the path of their motivations. If they are confused, then I want to see them acknowledge their confusion, not blunder onward as if they are a drunken beast shambling down the road. In Naked Games, I questioned the characters’ actions about every other chapter.

Thursday News: Tos;DR, Fair Use rulings, and poor B&N nook sales
B&N’s Nook Tablet Sales This Year Ranged Between Diddly to Squat – Barnes & Noble is betting on the Nook to save its bacon and with the declining number of eink purchases, the Nook tablets are being pushed hard. The problem with the Nook tablets is that they are overpriced (as compared to other comparable Android tablets) and worse, they lack content. Tablets are for watching video, playing games, and browsing the web. It’s about robust apps and music and multimedia. B&N’s tablets are capable...

REVIEW: Where We Belong by Emily Giffin
Dear Ms. Giffin,
Decades ago, when I was a teen, I read a wonderful book by Lois Lowry called Find a Stranger, Say Goodbye. The book chronicled the teenaged Natalie’s search for her birth mother, her meeting with the woman who gave birth to her and gave her up for adoption, and ended with Natalie’s realization that she belonged with the family she’d always had.
[image error]I was reminded of Lowry’s book when reading your sixth novel, Where We Belong. Prior to this I had read four of your books, and enjoyed...
Episode 31: DA SBTB Podcast, RWA Interviews with authors
From Sarah who graciously allowed me to bow out of the Podcasts conducted at RWA conference a few weeks ago:
This is the final interview from RWA. I had two more brief interviews but alas, the background noise made it very hard to distinguish the audio, so I apologize that I can’t add them to the podcast. The next time I see WahooSuze, I’m dragging her to a quiet place to chat with the small digital mic.
This interview with Stephanie Doyle and Molly O’Keefe took place on the day of the RITAs, a...
REVIEW: Beautiful Mess by Lucy V. Morgan
Dear Ms. Morgan,
In our most recent Reader Open Thread, Patty listed “Olly Harris: Wedding Wrecker” as a July book she’s interested in. Something about the title caught my eye and I looked for more about it which lead me to your website which lead me to the fun-ness that is “Beautiful Mess” which is free at Smashwords. Well, can’t get much better than free and in lots of lovely ebook formats too. Win! And what a darling little novella it is too.

Wednesday News: Hachette UK wants Tor to turn the DRM back on; Some authors are just against lending
Doubling Down on DRM – Last month, Tor’s entire catalog of ebooks went DRM free. You may have seen that if you went to purchase a Laura Florand backlist title after Sunita’s wonderful review of the Chocolate Thief. According to Cory Doctorow, Hachette UK wants its authors who are also published with Tor to ask Tor to replace the DRM. Hachette asserts this is because DRM is actually working to decrease piracy. I’m not sure what studies they have to prove their point (none exist as far as I kno...
