REVIEW: Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley

Dear Ms. Ashley:

This shifter series has a unique world setting. It’s almost punk in some sense because the world of the shifters is anti establishment in every way. The humans are afraid of shifters and despite shifters greater strength, humans have superior power and were able to corral shifters onto reservations of sorts and collar them. The collars emit electrical shocks of varying degrees if the shifters exhibit aggression.

Despite their oppression, the shifters have created a strong commu...

REVIEW: Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

Dear readers,

Please tell me I’m not the only person who’s fallen victim to this. You hear a premise for a forthcoming book. It sounds so great that the potential awesome overwhelms everything else. You overlook some crucial details like, for example, the background of the author writing it. In other words, your enthusiasm clouds your judgment. You never stop to think how this could go so terribly wrong.

[image error]You’d think after all this time, I’d know better.

When I first heard the premise for Stormda...

Monday News: The Air Force’s (not so) secret flying saucer; Jane Austen scholar fights; mass market still viable

This video is of the Ohio State Marching Band whose motto is “THE best damn band in the land” and from the videographic evidence, it’s hard to dispute this. The band does a classic video game tribute. You won’t regret watching it but if you are short on time, skip to the 6 minute mark and watch them do the horse. That was incredible.

Onto the news:

Cult leader – Richard Beck begins this article on Jane Austen talking about how thin skinned the lovers of Jane Austen are. “Austen lovers have not...

REVIEW: Effortless by S.C. Stephens

This review contains spoilers for Thoughtless which I reviewed here.

Dear Ms. Stephens:

This is a sequel to Thoughtless. While it could be read alone, I don’t think it should because the conflict that drives the story are the insecurities the two main protagonists have over the other person’s fidelity. I liked that this was what drove the conflict.

[image error]To recapThoughtless, Kellin and Denny were best friends. Denny cajoled his girlfriend, Kiera, to come to college with him in Seattle. Then he left her...

REVIEW: Kindle Paperwhite

I’ve been reading mostly on my iPhone and iPad having sold my Kindle 3G on Craigslist this past spring. I just wasn’t using it enough. But when the Kindle Paperwhite went on sale, I had to buy one.

There are two versions of the Kindle Paperwhite – one with wifi and one with 3G. I purchased the 3G with Special Offers but feel like I could have easily gotten away with just purchasing the wifi version for $119.

REVIEW: White Trash Beautiful by Teresa Mummert

Dear Ms. Mummert:

Sometimes I think to myself that my reading results would have a higher success rate if I just read excerpts but in this case I did read an excerpt on your site and I was excited for the book. I bought the book the morning it came out but I didn’t realize that the excerpt would be the only decent part of the story.
