REVIEW: Slammed by Colleen Hoover

Dear Ms. Hoover:

Despite many accolades and even your engaging excerpt posted here at Dear Author at the recommendation of a fellow reader, I balked at reading a book about poetry. But after reading every traditional publishing acquired self published, Slammed remained a nagging omission. An unchecked item on a to do list. A hanging fingernail. Finally, I broke down.

[image error]I realized that I had purchased these books a while back at the not very expensive price of $3.99. I’m not sure how much has been...

REVIEW: The Lady Risks All by Stephanie Laurens

Dear Ms. Laurens,

Your latest book,The Lady Risks All, is almost 500 pages. That was at least 350 too many for me.

In many ways, this is a typical Laurens book—although it differs in one excellent way. The man has enough sexual experience to train several brothels; the virginal heroine is so responsive to his touch it’s a wonder she can hold hands without sexually exploding. There is a large family with enough wealth to rescue at least part of the Greek economy. The language, especially that of...

Friday Film Review: Arachnophobia

[image error]Arachnophobia (1990)

Genre: Thriller/Comedy

Grade: B-

“My God, it’s just a spider!”

In casting around for this year’s Halloween movie, I remembered this little gem about the numerous offspring of a butt ugly, venomous Venezuelan spider and a hot little Californian babe spider who terrorize an idyllic small town. Yeah, those bastards end up making an earthquake look good in comparison. The “Making of” featurette describes this movie as a “Thrillomedy.” It’s a chance to scream and squirm and laugh....

REVIEW: Flutter by Gina Linko

Jia’s preface: The majority of this review is spoiler-free but I would be remiss if I didn’t discuss the end of this novel because I know it’ll be a dealbreaker for many readers. I’ll put that discussion under a spoiler tag, however, so just don’t click it if you want to remain unspoiled.

Dear Ms. Linko,

I went into your debut novel with no expectations. In fact, I’d say I started reading it with only the barest inkling of what it was about — something to do with a girl who could time travel an...

REVIEW: Black Butterfly by Sienna Mynx

Dear Ms. Mynx:

In the grand tradition of harlequin presents, you bring us a multicultural story of a down on her luck heroine and a magnetic billionaire determined to possess her. I picked this book up after reading a positive review for Buttercup, another Mynx title, at Karen’s blog. Her complaints were that Buttercup was too short and the villain’s motivations were confusing. In Black Butterfly, the book is 140,000 words and there is no vvillain. Unfortunately it didn’t work for me as I had...

Thursday News: iPad Mini is here; 3D printing produces a drone; EU to close Etailers Tax Dodge

The iPad Mini is here, finally. The specs are a 7.9″ diagonal screen with the same resolution as an iPad 2 (which I still own and use. I think the iPad 2 is a great device and while the Retina screen is sharper and clearer, I’ve never felt the lack). The actual device size is 7.87 inches by 5.3 inches and it weighs almost 11 ounces. In comparison, the Kindle Paperwhite weighs 7.5 oz.

The biggest drawback of the iPad Mini is the price. The base wifi model is $329, which is $129 more than the 7″...
