JOINT REVIEW: A Notorious Countess Confesses by Julie Anne Long

Dear Ms. Long,

Dabney and I are both fans of your work and we both enjoyed your latest Pennyroyal Green novel, A Notorious Countess Confesses. I, however, liked it more than Dabney did and thought it would be interesting to discuss the book with her.

[image error]A Notorious Countess Confesses continues the pattern of the last book—it’s not about one of the Eversea or Redmond children. The hero of this book is Pennyroyal Green’s handsome vicar, Adam Sylvaine, a distant cousin of the Eversea family. Adam is...

The hidden costs of the $0.99 ebook

There has been a lot of debate about whether self-publishing is killing the book industry, whether bad books are driving out good books, and whether self-published books are diminishing respect for books overall. I can see why these issues generate so much heat and controversy, especially among authors and industry watchers. But I think these are the wrong conversations to have. Because there will always be a lot of bad books. There will always be competition and cannibalizing among different...

Tuesday News: More on the Penguin Random House deal

The Curse of the Sympathetic Character – LitLove talks about the sympathetic character and how problematic it can be when it is directed primarily toward women. It reminds me of a piece I wanted to write and will for next Tuesday about exactly why women are hard on other women. I don’t necessarily agree with LitLove’s suggestion that it is because we are less sympathetic but for another reason instead. I did enjoy LitLove’s piece though. LitLove/Reading Room

Is E-publishing Helping or Hurting...

As he continued to stare, I wanted to point to my cheek and remind him, But you were the one who wanted this, remember? You’re the one who asked-and I repeat-Why not fix your face?

REVIEW: Franny K Stein – Lunch Walks Among Us by Jim Benton

Dear Mr. Benton,

A good friend of mine steered me in the direction of the Franny K. Stein books. Her daughter loves them so much that she was crushed when she discovered that she couldn’t make her own monster. Or at least….not yet. Her daughter is still young though so who knows what she’ll be up to in ten years!

Franny and her family live in a cutely painted house on Daffodil Street. It’s bright and cheery except for a room with a round window at the top. That’s Franny’s room and she likes it...

REVIEW: The Girl Nobody Wanted by Lynn Raye Harris

Dear Lynn Raye Harris:

My biggest problem with this story is that I was unprepared for the emotional reactions of the characters. They were two steps ahead of me and the whole time, I was internally thinking “wait up.”

Anna Constantinidesis the jilted and humiliated bride who learned of her fiance’s perfidy in the tabloids. Because she has been raised to be proper and polite, she attends the engagement party in order to show that there are no hard feelings. She should have hard feelings. I have...
