REVIEW: To Calais, In Ordinary Time by James Meek

Three journeys. One road.

England, 1348. A gentlewoman flees an odious arranged marriage, a Scots proctor sets out for Avignon, and a young plowman in search of freedom is on his way to volunteer with a company of archers. All come together on the road to Calais.

Coming in their direction from across the English Channel is the Black Death, the plague that will wipe out half of the population of Northern Europe. As the journey unfolds, overshadowed by the archers past misdeeds and clerical...

REVIEW: Yours with Love by Mary Burchell

The scheme would be of mutual benefit

When Jason Kent literally crashed into Virginias life, he turned her whole world upside down. In return for a large sum of money, he asked her to pose as his mistress so that his wife would divorce him.

Virginia agreed because it meant she could finance her younger brothers artistic career.

But would she have been so willing if she had known the full impact Jason Kent would have on her life?

With the Open Library not having wait lists, this the...

REVIEW: The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie

In the months that followed I watched His Holiness working on a new book . . . I began to think that perhaps the time had come for me to turn my paws to a book of my own . . . one that tells my own tale . . . How I was rescued from a fate too grisly to contemplate, to become constant companion to a man who is not only one of the worlds greatest spiritual leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, but who is also a dab hand with the can opener.

Not so much fly-on-the-wall as cat-on-the-sill,...

REVIEW: I’m Afraid Your Teddy Is In Trouble Today by Jancee Dunn

What do your toys do when your back is turned? Mischief and a bit of wish fulfillment are in play when a ringleader teddy bear throws a very memorable party.

Have you ever wondered what stuffed animals do while their companion humans are at school? What if a teddy bear invited all his stuffed animal friends over? Imagine the wild party that might ensue, complete with jumping (a little too hard) on the bed, coloring on the walls, dressing up in Moms clothes, having a bubble-bath sliding...

JOINT REVIEW: The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel

Jennie:  Five years ago, I read and loved Mandels breakout novel, Station Eleven. It would probably have not come to my attention if not for Janines terrific review. I loved Station Eleven so much that I was inspired to read the authors first novel, Last Night in Montreal, which wasnt as successful for me. Still, I was excited to hear about the impending release of The Glass Hotel, and when Janine suggested we review it together, I was more than happy to do so.

The novel opens with a chapter...
