REVIEW: Jumping the Bull by Jenn Burke

Ben Beaufort, badass bison

Everyone who looks at Ben and sees his six-foot-plus, muscular build assumes hes in construction. Or the military. Or something that requires brawn over brains. In truth, hes a mild-mannered human resources professionalor at least he was, until he got laid off. Now hes looking for a second career as a Furry United Coalition agent, to discover how truly badass he can be.

Oliver Zuraw, whoop-ass whooping crane

REVIEW: Stages of the Heart by Jo Goodman

Experience has taught Laurel to be suspicious of the men who pass through Morrison Station. Shes been running the lucrative operation that connects Colorados small frontier town of Falls Hollow with the stagecoach line since she inherited it from her father, and shes not about to let some wandering cowboy take over the reins. But newcomer McCall Landry isnt just any gunslinger. He seems to genuinely care for Laurel, and with his rugged good looks and mysterious past, he could be the one man...

What Janine is Reading: Huxtables Edition

This past January, I read Mary Baloghs Huxtables series. Although it was a mixed bag for me, even the Baloghs that dont work for me often make for interesting reading. Here are my thoughts on the books:

First Comes Marriage

After a short prologue setting up the hero of book five (because why?), we are introduced to Elliott Wallace, Viscount Lyngate. Elliott arrives at the village of Throckbridge to inform the countrified Huxtables, distant cousins of his, that Stephen Huxtable has inherited...

REVIEW: The Dalai Lama’s Cat and the Art of Purring by David Michie

What makes you purr? Of all the questions in the world, this is the most important. . . . . Because no matter whether you are a playful kitten or sedentary senior, whether youre a scrawny alley Tom, or sleek-coated uptown girl, whatever your circumstances you just want to be happy. Not the kind of happy that comes and goes like a can of flaked tuna, but an enduring happiness. The deep down happiness that makes you purr from the heart. His Holinesss cat is backolder, a bit wiser, and as...

REVIEW: The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

[image error]Note: There are some spoilers in this review.

I must be a glutton for punishment to choose this book during a pandemic. But I generally like dystopian stories, and Ive heard good things about The Parable of the Sower over the years (Janine is a fan, I believe). So, feeling that it would be apropos to the times, I downloaded a copy.

When the story opens, Lauren Oya Olamina is a teenager living in a walled community in the suburbs of Los Angeles in 2024. Society has been ravaged by climate...

What Janine is Reading in Winter 2020

The Rook by Daniel OMalley

A couple of you mentioned enjoying this book in our December open thread. It had been languishing on Mount Kilimanjaro my TBR pile for years, and the love in the open thread prompted me to actually read it.

Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany) Thomas comes to in a park with no memory of her past, surrounded by dead people wearing latex gloves. Its evident that she killed them, but not why or who they are. Or for that matter, who she is.

A note in her coat pocket (from her...

REVIEW: Starbreaker by Amanda Bouchet

[image error]Dear Amanda Bouchet,

Nightchaser, the first book in the Endeavor series, was one of my favourite books of 2019 so I was hankering to read the follow up, Starbreaker, to find out what was next for Tess, Shade and the crew of the Endeavor. (But, lets be honest here, mostly Tess and Shade).

Warning: Spoilers for Nightchaser follow.

Starbreaker is not a book which stands alone. While there is enough in it to remind readers of the major plot points, it is designed to be read together with ...

REVIEW: A Corruptible Crown by Gillian Bradshaw

The compelling sequel to the English Civil War novel London in Chains It is 1648, and the Civil War has been resurrected by a king still determined to be an absolute ruler and a parliament unable to agree how to govern without him. Blacksmith Jamie Hudson, weary and disillusioned, is forced to re-enlist, leaving his wife Lucy to struggle on alone in London: printing newsbooks, dodging the censors, and all the while supporting the Leveller demands for democracy and freedom, and hoping for a...
