Friday Film Review: Two Mules for Sister Sara

[image error]Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)

Genre: Western/Action/Road Romance

Grade: B

It recently dawned on me that I haven't reviewed all that many Westerns. They're just not the first genre of films I think of when I'm looking for romance. So in an effort to remedy that I give you "Two Mules for Sister Sara" though where the second mule comes from, I don't know. Guess it sounds better than "A Mule and a Burro for Sister Sara." From what I understand this film received lackluster reviews when it was r...

REVIEW: Muscling Through by J.L. Merrow

Dear Ms. Merrow.

I only read this story because your name was on it. I had a truly horrendous experience once reading a story with a not-smart protagonist (it was a BDSM story and the relationship ended up as true abuse and was awful. I was depressed for days that anyone would consider that "love"), but I figured if anyone could pull it off, it would be you. I trust your voice. I trust you as an author. And I was right: you were brilliant. As always.

REVIEW: Early Georgette Heyer series

Dear Readers.

As part of our Georgette Heyer week here, I've decided to do lightning reviews of Heyer's very early series. This series includes Heyer's first runaway bestseller, the first Regency Romance evah, one of the most well-researched books about Waterloo evah, iconic heroes and the cross-dressing heroines who shoot them (well, not quite), duels, highwaymen, and Beau Brummel.

[image error]The series "starts" (sort of) with The Black Moth, which I've already reviewed here at Dear Author. This is...

Thursday Midday Links: What's a Little Cover Art Copying Between Friends?

Author LK Rigel's self published book, Spiderwork, has a gorgeous cover. So gorgeous that HarperCollins contacted the artist to purchase it from her. The artist refused. No matter, thinks HarperCollins.

In an email, Nathalie Suellen, the artist, shared she was originally contacted by writer LK Rigel about the license for Suellen's original artwork 'City of Angels' which was created in 2009.  The license was sold to Rigel and Rigel used it on her book  "Spiderwork."  HarperCollins contacted...

REVIEW: A Risk Worth Taking by Zana Bell

"Any red-blooded American male would be all over Cressa Curtis. She's gorgeous, she's wild and clearly she's open for a no-strings-attached adventure. But Adam Walker's been there, done that. And now he wants more for himself. Even with his history, Adam still believes in love and family and marriage and the whole white picket fence—hardly what Cressa is offering.

Besides, everything about the crazy Kiwi spells danger and distraction—two things Adam can't afford to risk with his sights set on...

REVIEW: In a Treacherous Court by Michelle Diener

Dear Ms. Diener,

Having recently read and enjoyed a historical novel set in the 16th century and dealing with intrigue and assassins, I was intrigued when In a Treacherous Court fell into my hands. Realizing it was a debut sharpened my interest, since I'm always on the lookout for new authors, especially those whose work is something a bit different from straight historical genre romance.

[image error]The principal characters of In a Treacherous Court are Dutch artist Susanna Horenbout and English courtier ...

Wednesday Midday Links: Topless Female Duelists

HarperCollins total year-end results are unclear given that parent company news Corp. did not break out  the division in the year-end report. However, the children's division improved and e-book sales accounted for approximately 12% of all business in the US last year.  Source: PW

Author Dorothea Benton Frank gave an interview to the Columbus Dispatch which surely sounded better in her head than it did when it was printed out. She indicates her preference for well groomed fans to match...

Shuzluva Reading List, Week of August 13

Intervamption by Kristin Miller. This book is the first in the Vampires of Crimson Bay series and it's a hot mess that I am going to expand upon in a longer review. Dylan runs ReVamp which is both a clinic and supply center for the Crimson Bay vampires and she's dedicated her life to figuring out what's screwing with the vampire blood supply. Slade is a therian (shape shifter, they're the enemy of the vamps), sent to infiltrate Dylan's khiss (her…er…vampire coven? nest? whatever?) to stop...

REVIEW: Primal Law by J.D. Tyler

Dear Ms. Tyler:

The first half of this book detailed a setup that I found pretty incredible, so much so that I set the book aside and didn't finish it for 2 months. The latter half of the story worked far better, but only in isolation. Together, neither the romance nor the worldbuilding held up.

[image error]The premise is that there is a bunch of werewolves that were changed from human to shapeshifter after an attack 5 years ago in Aghanistan and they now all have special X-men like powers. Some are pre...
