AI Worldviews 02023 -  An Essay

2023 Open Philanthropy AI Worldviews Contest

https://www.openphilanthropy.org/open-philanthropy-ai-worldviews-contest/

Whatis the probability that AGI is developed by January 1, 2043?

By “AGI” wemean something like “AI that can quickly and affordably be trained to performnearly all economically and strategically valuable tasks at roughly human costor less.” AGI is a notoriously thorny concept to define precisely. What we’reactually interested in is the potential existential threat posed by advanced AIsystems. To that end, we welcome submissions that are oriented around relatedconcepts, such as transformative AIhuman-level AI, or PASTA (Process forAutomating Scientific and Technological Advancement).

Fave Novels of VoN

Some Fave Novels of VoN

(Velikovsky of Newcastle)

In no in-particular ordering of sequentialism:

Moby-Dick (01851) Brave New World  (01932) Pnin (01957) Catch-22 (01961) Pale Fire (01962) The Master and Margarita (01967) and  The Third Policeman (01967) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (01974) A Confederacy of Dunces (01980) White Noise (01985) The EthiSizer: A Novella-rama (02023)
See also:
Some of Velikovsky of Newcastle's Fave Short Sci-Fi StoriesSome of VoN's Fave ThinkersSome Other Stuff VoN Has Liked, & maybe even, still does...? You'd have to check... (Movies, Books, Comix, & whatnot)
...Also, not sure if you know this, but - superseding the old-school Gregorian (religulous) and Jacobian (religulous) `calendars' (...i.e., old, unethical, anti-scientific `woo-woo' ideas) is: The EthiSizer Calendar.

...Instead of `Day-names' based on old outdated `gods' (i.e., woo-woo) - and - instead of `Month-names' (based on old unethical ideas like `March' / `Mars-the-god-of-war' - yet more unethical fairy-tale-mythical-unscientific bullshit), the Days are simply numbered 1 through 365, each year.
And, each week is 10 days long.
(With an EthiSizer running the world, no humanimal works any more - the robots do all the jobs - so it's one big long "weekend", all year!
...Everyone in the world has Universal Basic Income.)
e.g.:

Some Random Dumb Forgetful Guy: "Hey EthiSizer, I forget, what day is it, today?"
The EthiSizer: "Today is Day 271, in the Earth Solar-Year 00214, of our Charles Darwin... or, some fun `ye olde' trivia - in the old, outdated, unethical and unscientific calendar. it would have been called - by dumb folks - `Thor's Day /  Thursday, the 28th of the Seventh-month -tember, in the Year, 02023'... But the scientific facts are these: The `old calendar' was stupid, as Seventh-Month was misnamed `Sept', for the Latin word for `Seven' but even that didn't make any sense, as `September' was: the ninth month...! ()How stoopid were those old folks!) The `old. dumb' calendar names were all stupid, nonsensical, and unethical. And that's why, I fixed them! ...And, you're welcome, world! ...Have an ethical day! On this day - Day 271, of the Sol-3 Year, 00214! :) "

...See how that works-?

If not, see this book, wherein, The EthiSizer can explain it to you, at length!

`Fake Science Publishing' - Prof Bernhard A Sabel PhD

Winston's Weekly CrisiScience Collaborative ~ with Steve Winston

February 16th, 02023

----------//-----------

From Steve's Abstract:

It’s not enough to simply tell the truth—we have to SELL the truth.  The truth—what really is, what really happened, has to compete in an ever more mind numbing information market place driven from microcast to broadcast.  Real FACTS swim in a sea of opinions and political biases hammered into synthetic “facts” that are relentlessly marketed by their inventors to serve sometimes nefarious objectives.  Simply put, the information universe no longer segregates opinion and fact creating a stew of “separate facts” that threaten to drown any objective sense of reality.  The only chance that objective reality has in this game is for its advocates to exert the same relentless energy in selling (marketing) the truth as the alternate reality purveyors invest in promoting their charades.

Selling the truth needs to not be confused with putting a pay-wall around the truth or turning it into a low value commodity.  The truth must be freely distributed and readily accessible to all who might have an interest.

Unfortunately in the marketplace of scientific information, there is already a pay-wall in the form of scientific publishing.  And Academia is complicit in this by pushing its ranks to “publish or perish”—the more prestigious the journal the better.  That creates an unintended underground demand and a consequential big business for fact factories.  The time, effort, and expense involved in generating real scientific breakthroughs creates a shortage thereof.  So, because there’s a market to be served, with or without pedigree, there’s plenty of incentive to make stuff up.  And to pull that off, one or more complicit scientists used to be required to make a fake.  But AI and ChatGPT may be simplifying even that. What is the appropriate response? Handwringing and laments won’t fix it.

Dr. Bernhard Sabel will present:

"Fake Science Publishing: massive threat to the permanent scientific record”

---------//----------

Dr. Bernhard Sabel is Professor of Medical Psychology at University of Magdeburg, Germany

His research focusses for over 40 years on the neurobiological basis of recovery from brain damage using the visual system, vision loss and vision restoration as a model. He developed microcurrent neuromodulation to enhance brain network activation and uncovered how mental states (personality and stress) affect recovery in eye and brain disorders such as glaucoma, optic nerve and brain stroke or TBI.  His work led to the development of a new science-based, holistic treatment paradigm for the visually impaired which is offered at an international private practice (Savir-Center) in Germany, where 84% of his >1,500 patients improved their vision. Most recently, he has also become engaged in more fundamental problem:  hunting for fake science publications and estimating their yearly number in the science literature.

Dr. Sabel is Editor of the Journal RESTORATIVE NEUROLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE and Vice-President of the International Society of Low Vision Research and Rehabilitation (ISLRR).  His >240 SCI publications have 13.000 Citations (H-index: 64) and were published in high ranking journals, including Science, Nature, Nature med, Brain, Annals Neurology, Neurology, Neuroimage, IOVS and Brit J Ophthalmology.

Workshop on Diagrams of Life and Evolution - 02022

Workshop on Diagrams of Life and Evolution @ Diagrams2022
13th of September 02022 - Rome & Online
---

----
So I just attended this great workshop, convened by Nathalie Gontier. From the programme:

`Introduction
This workshop will investigate the major diagrams of evolution, their precursors in intellectual history, and their adequacy in depicting the mechanisms and processes or general aspects of life that they intend to illustrate. Along the way, the workshop furthermore aims to expose curious parallels between diagrammatic research in the life and the natural sciences, reasons for which might be found in the way humans conceptualize diagrams cognitively.

Keywords - Cycles of Life - Chains of Being - Scales of Nature - Pedigrees and Genealogies - Trees of life - Evolutionary Timelines - Phylogenetic trees - Networks - Mode and Tempo of Evolution - Hierarchy theory

Examined Lives: Honor Cultures (April 02022)

TVoL's Examined Lives: Honor Cultures

(Webinar of: April 02022)

 A blog-post by

--------------

Attended this great webinar...

Honor Cultures (Session 20)
Date and Time: Thursday, April 21st, 12-1pm ET (4-5pm UTC)
Abstract
by Andy Norman:
Anthropologists have noticed that nomadic people and herdsmen—especially those without recourse to reliable law enforcement—have cultures that are quite different from those that prevail in modern, law-governed states. In “honor" cultures, a person’s worth and reputation can be granted or taken away by others and it often pays to respond to insults with violence. (Think gunslingers of the Wild West, or the samurai of feudal Japan.) By contrast, “dignity" cultures treat individuals as having inherent and roughly equal worth and rely on institutions to defend rights. Honor and dignity cultures emphasize different virtues: an admirable person in one culture might count as a despicable person in another. Honor culture prevailed in Medieval Europe; dignity culture prevails in much of post-Enlightenment Europe. Honor culture is said to prevail in the American South; dignity cultures prevail in many cosmopolitan cities. What light can evolutionary thinking about these phenomena teach us about the modern world? What it can teach us about how to evolve a world that works for all?

Hierarchy In The Forest by Christopher Boehm

& a passing Comment I made in the Zoom-chat:
02:53:33 AM - From  Velikovsky of Newcastle  to  Everyone:
Re: Evolved Group Rules - (& honor vs dignity) & `Hierarchy In The Forest' (Boehm) - a quote from Harari's `21 Lessons' book (p 187):
"`Scientists nowadays point out that morality in fact has deep evolutionary roots pre-dating the appearance of humankind by millions of years. All social mammals, such as wolves, dolphins and monkeys, have ethical codes, adapted by evolution to promote group cooperation.  For example, when wolf cubs play with one another, they have ‘fair game’ rules. If a cub bites too hard, or continues to bite an opponent that has rolled on his back and surrendered, the other cubs will stop playing with him. In chimpanzee bands dominant members are expected to respect the property rights of weaker members. If a junior female chimpanzee finds a banana, even the alpha male will usually avoid stealing it for himself. If he breaks this rule, he is likely to lose status. Apes not only avoid taking advantage of weak group members, but sometimes actively help them."

 (Harari, 2018 - `21 Lessons for the 21st Century', p 187)
