Nina Allan has kind words for Undertow

A must-read from Nina Allan, not only because she has some kind things to say about Undertow Publications: “Still more encouraging and truly a wonderful lineup of stories can be found between the covers of the Canadian publication The Year’s Best Weird Fiction #2 from Undertow Publications.” and ” I defy anyone to look at Käthe Koja’s selection for Undertow and not feel thoroughly invigorated and inspired.” and ” There is a significantly higher presence of minority ethnic writers and writers from non-Anglophone backgrounds. There are even two works in translation. Last year’s selection from Laird Barron was equally innovative and inspiring. We can only hope to see this anthology going from strength to strength, proving that the weird is so very much a twenty-first century literature, a literature that is defined by its diversity.” http://www.strangehorizons.com/2016/20160125/allan-c.shtml

Review and kind words for Year’s Best Weird #2

James Everington over at Scattershot Writing has some nice things to say about Year’s Best Weird Fiction 2, edited by Kathe Koja, and for the series itself.

” As my selection above hints at, one of the highlights of Year’s Best Weird Fiction 2 is the range of authors it includes in its comprehensive and generous definition of ‘the weird’. There are new names and old faces; horror, science-fiction and fantasy; works in translation, an almost equal representation of women as men, and writers from a wider variety of countries than in most of anthologies. There’s even stories by writers a few years dead alongside those living, which is another kind of diversity I guess…

Both volumes of Best Weird Fiction come highly recommended by this reader, then, and it will be interesting to see where Undertow take the series with the third volume.”

Locus review of ‘Skein and Bone’

The January issue of Locus Mag has a terrific review of Victoria Leslie’s ‘Skein and Bone,’ by the inimitable Laird Barron. “These stories linger in the mind like ripples in a night pond long after the flung stone sinks into darkness.” Thanks, Laird! Make sure to pick up a copy of Locus and ‘Skein and Bone.’

Jeff VanderMeer blurb

“In Meet Me in the Middle of the Air, Eric Schaller showcases stories both horrific and

transgressive, as well as tales that comment on horror and transgression,

and our unthinking acceptance of stereotype or cliché. By turns chilling,

disturbing, and, at times, imbued with a dark sense of humor and the

author’s scientific perspective, the collection enters into profitable

conversation with Poe, Ligotti, and other masters of the form while also

being refreshingly its own thing. Very entertaining and smart.”

-Jeff VanderMeer, Best-Selling Author of the Southern Reach trilogy

Review and analysis of YBWF2

Here’s a terrific analysis and review of Year’s Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 2. It speaks to part of the reason why I wanted rotating guest-editors. I wanted to show the scope of weird fiction, and wanted each volume to be a unique book that could be compared and contrasted to the others. I wanted this dialog on weird fiction. This analysis compares Laird‘s volume with Kathe‘s, and also looks forward to Simon‘s. It is interesting. Have a read. It’s also a good review.

Two fantastic reviews of Victoria Leslie’s ‘Skein and Bone’ have just landed. Very pleased that the book is starting to receive some good attention.
