Writing What I Don’t Know
I’m often asked why and how I write something I can never experience (such as a relationship between two gay men, since I’m a straight woman). My simple answer is: The same way I write my papers for school, research and imagination. But that’s a short blog post, so I’ll explain further. When I was working exclusively on the Taylor Twins Series, I read books in the m/m genre, as well as general romance, to get a feel of conventions. Then, I promptly decided which conventions to use and which to throw away. I don’t subscribe to traditions—of any kind—just because they exist. Nor do I reject them haphazardly. However, some of the research proved very useful. In my first book dealing with a male/male relationship, I had to figure out what was physically possible. I try to keep my books real in that sense. But no matter what I’m writing, the scenes are driven by the character’s emotions and motivations. Otherwise you’ve got porn, which is fine for some, but I want more for my boys. As to why I write relationships I can’t experience, i.e. male/male, that answer is a bit more complicated. In The Taylor Twins Series, I started with a concept of twins trying to get their sizeable trust funds. I figured Matt out. He hated his job, but had to continue if he wanted the money. His story began with the destructive ways he dealt with this conundrum. Chris was a little more complicated. His ‘assignment’ was to marry and have a son. I had to ask myself why this was a problem. Seems simple, assuming he’s a likeable guy, which he was, but the conflict came in when his father, Robert, didn’t approve of his choice of a partner. My first thought regarding Robert’s reason for condemning this lied in their differences in social class. I wasn’t sure if it would be enough. Regardless, Chris and I worked together to get the picture of his great love: long dark hair, green eyes, slender build from years of dancing, and…male. Why he didn’t just say that is beyond my comprehension, but we had our story. Theirs was a love worth risking it all, and then a little more. Entirely different from The Taylor Twins Series is Ben’s Life Series. My publisher requested a m/m erotica novella series. I agreed, but pushed it off because I was so in love with my other characters I was afraid to write anything else. Then, I became a little blocked working on the fourth book in that series, so I set it aside. Around this time, I started seeing an increase in BDSM books, specifically highlighting the Dom/sub relationship, in my editing and reading pile. Aside from a few talented authors, I was appalled. Doms cut their subs down verbally, didn’t take no for an answer, and in one very popular book, he continued doling out punishments after his sub refused to sign the contract agreeing to participate in the lifestyle. Let me make this clear: she adamantly said no, and he still hit her. That is the definition of abuse. I went from appalled to angry the more I read and decided to use the contracted m/m erotica Lazy Day asked to portray this type of relationship another way. Back to research. I found information on the lifestyle and spoke to participants in various levels of involvement: Doms, subs, switches; people who went to a club occasionally (or only once) to those involved in long term relationships where these roles were present. I sat on the information for a day or two before I started writing to think about how I wanted it to play out. The sub, Zack, had to be eager to take on the role. He and Steve, the Dom, sat and constructed and signed a contract, before the roles were solidified. Part of what made it Zack’s choice was his success independent of Steve. His need, then, was emotional and physical, as opposed to financial. Zack gave up control and accepted punishments because of one simple, yet essential fact: he loves Steve. With that love came a soul deep trust. And Steve, for his part, never disciplined Zack because he enjoyed causing him pain. Rather, the discipline, both physical and emotional, brought out the man Zack wanted to be. Is Action a 100% accurate reflection of the lifestyle? No, probably not. But do you know what all that research taught me? No two couples/people will practice the same way. Action demonstrates how Zack and Steve live and love. And there’s more to come. Why do I write what I write? To excite readers and tell a story I believe in. Oh, and, it’s hot.

Character Interview for Rainie's Lake by Brenda and Steve

Rainie's Lake Character Interview 
       Hi! Brenda and Steve here...thank you for joining us today as we chat with Dylan and Rainie on the porch at the cabin.  This is our first interview with characters and both let us know they wanted to chat! Now, we won't allow them to give spoilers away, but we do hope you'll come to love these two as we do. 
    We're sitting here enjoying the breathtaking view of the pine trees and the serene mountains. Dylan is making us coffee. He's such the host! Rainie will be here soon. 


     Later if you want to stretch your legs and walk about, you'll probably find Rainie down by the lake. She wanders in the fog early mornings and before dusk. Be careful by the lake's edge, the fog is thick and the water is freezing this time of year. The dock would be the safest place to stand and chat with her one on one.

     Ah, here's Dylan now with steaming mugs to go around. Thanks Dylan!
Brenda & Steve: Dylan, we hope you're enjoying your vacation. Tell us a little bit about you and your job as an art instructor.

Dylan: You're welcome and actually I am! Well, *chuckles* I'm really pretty boring. I love to fish so when I saw the ad for the cabin with the private dock, and the spectacular view, I knew this place was my destination. I teach at the local arts & design college within a few miles of my home. Every quarter, I have the pleasure of instructing very gifted students; about 15 to 20 in the class. I guess being one of the youngest instructors helps too. My students and I really connect.
Brenda & Steve: We did hear the fishing is good in these parts. What prompted this alone time?
Dylan: This vacation was long over due since I haven't taken time for myself in four years. As you can see it's a beautiful area for an artist to get the creative juices flowing. I hoped to find inspiration to put the brush to canvas and I did. *grins*
Brenda & Steve: We see the grin on your face. And here's the reason! Hi Rainie, glad you have joined us. 
*Dylan stands and offers Rainie his chair*
Rainie: *smiles, pulling the hood away from her head* Hi Brenda & Steve! *Dylan rests his hand on her shoulder. Rainie places her hand over his, giving it a squeeze*
Brenda & Steve: Rainie, you're from this area. Tell us a little bit about yourself and growing up here.
Rainie: I grow up in the next town. After I graduated from college, I returned and taught at the grammar school. My parents rented this cabin a few times when I was a little girl. I have wonderful memories of playing out by the dock and on the lake that I try to keep in the forefront of my mind because there's a sad memory here too. *tightens her grip on Dylan's hand*
Brenda & Steve:*sighs* We know there are good times and bad times here, so let's keep the chat in a happy mode for now. Dylan, what was it about Rainie that drew you to her.
Dylan: *takes a lingering glance at Rainie* Her eyes captured me. They're a beautiful green and get darker depending on her mood. Oh, and her smile which reaches her eyes first.  Ummm, her butt too; I loved watching her walk away but hoped she would always return. *winks at Rainie*
Brenda & Steve: That's so sweet and romantic! Rainie, same question to you. What drew you to Dylan?
Rainie: *blushes* Dylan, you just had to add how much you liked my backside! Let's see, he makes great coffee don't you think! *laughs*  His boyish good looks, sandy hair and his kindness.  I've never met a man as kind and giving as Dylan.
*A red 2012 Mustang pulls in the yard. A familiar, shapely brunette gets out of the car and waves*

Tonya: Hi everyone! I was out for a drive and thought I'd stopped by.
Brenda & Steve: *in unison* Hey Tonya! *each give her a hug* (Brenda) This is a surprise visit! We're chatting with Dylan and Rainie. 
*Steve offers his chair to Tonya, gets a hug and she hugs Brenda*
Tonya: Thanks Steve, you're such a gentleman! It's great to see you two again. Nice to meet you Dylan and Rainie. *takes a second look at Dylan from head to toe* He's a keeper, Rainie. 
Brenda & Steve: (Brenda laughs) Tonya, hon, behave now. 
Tonya: Whaaaat? I was just sayin'. Actually I have a few questions to ask if I may be so bold.
Brenda & Steve: *Steve winks at Tonya* Bren, you know Tonya loves being in control since the switch. 
Tonya: *purrs* Yes, I cherish my new role. For my first question: What do each of you find attractive in the opposite sex? 
Rainie: Well Tonya, I mentioned earlier kindness and how kind Dylan is. The other traits would be a good sense of humor, compassion and a good kisser. 
Tonya: Oh, let me guess. Dylan is a good kisser among other things? 
Rainie: Yes to all! 
Dylan: *blushes* Okay, no kissing and telling here. Tonya, what I find most attractive in a female is a passion for life, a woman that keeps me smiling whether she is with me or I'm thinking of her. But most of all, a woman who doesn't give up and goes after what she wants or needs to do. 
Tonya: Well this brings me to my other question. *turns to look at Rainie* Rainie, you had a tragic past. What made you think Dylan would be the one to believe and help you?  
Rainie: *bites her lower lip, looks at Dylan* He cares for people and how they feel. I tried many times to get other people, who came to the cabin, to listen to me. No one believed me. Dylan did. I wish I could go back and change my life, and met Dylan back then; my life would have been so different. 
Dylan:  *kneels down beside Rainie, looks up at Tonya* We both wish we knew each other before the incident.  
Tonya: Thank goodness I brought tissues! *reaches in her leather coat pocket* 
Brenda & Steve: (Brenda) *sniffs* Okay, I'm getting teary-eyed all over again here. Rainie and Dylan, thank you for chatting with us today. Tonya, we're so glad you drove up to visit. It'll be dusk soon and we want to leave before the fog rolls in.  
Rainie: *stands* I need to take my walk near the lake. Dylan, we'll work on the sketch later this evening? 
Dylan: *rises, takes Rainie's hand and softly kisses her lips* Sure Rainie. Just a few more touches and I'll be ready to paint. 
*Brenda, Steve and Tonya watch the intimate exchange between the lovers before walking towards their cars*

For those of you meeting us for the first time, Steve and I went to high school together. We shared homerooms, classes and were friends during those four years. After graduation, we attended separate colleges and lost touch for 30 years. However, we were in some of the same states or cities but at different times. We like to think we were destined to be together. While searching on Myspace for classmates, I found Steve and here we are four years later going strong as ‘A couple who writes erotic romance’. “I like the fact this was a short story and I felt almost as if I was looking at a series of snapshots depicting a small segment of the characters’ lives. Very little background was needed to understand the plot, it was a smooth-flowing story, the characters formed easily in my head from their descriptions and I loved the naughty scenes. Whew! HOT! I was a little worried they might not survive the ménage because that’s a big step to take and if it doesn’t work out an even bigger step to recover from. I was happy with the ending and the hint of what is to come. I look forward to the next in the series.”

We have several works in progress. Scarlett’s Cowboy, a contemporary erotic western due to be released this year. On Friday, June 1st, we’ll share an excerpt!
We’ve mentioned our second installment of TOS, Bk 2 above and we also have an erotic time travel in notes. No title yet but we’ll leave you with a teaser:

A Short Story
     This is an unplanned short story that I found in my files, written many years ago, and edited a bit so I could share it with you! As I worked on it, the length of the story ended up being more than the original but I don't think you'll mind! If you love spanking stories and/or happen to enjoy watching, you'll like the read. I happen to know there's a tiny bit of voyeurism in all of us.....*wicked laugh*....you can't fool me! You're just like me or you wouldn't have stopped in here! I love that you're just like me though....naughty nasty minds that love to read even naughtier stories!
