One Little Word® 2017 | The Reading Of The Words

One of the traditions that has been built over the last few years surrounding One Little Word® is the reading of the words by my friend Liz Lamoreux

This year she asked me if she could read the words out of order and I said, "Go for it! Let's mix it up.

If you are still pondering a word for yourself for 2017 I highly suggest you push play, close your eyes and listen. You might connect with a word you hadn't considered previously. Please note that Liz is reading from the list of words I compiled from my previous blog post (collected up to a certain point in the day yesterday). If we missed your word it was unintentional.

Listen to Liz read a list of the words here.

The word I'm holding in my hands at the top of this post is from my friend Colleen Attara. She's been supporting this project for a number of years by bringing wholehearted goodness in the form of words made from reclaimed materials and I'm happy to continue sharing her talents with you.

As many of you know I am also offering custom acrylic words (hand-drawn by me) in the shop in two sizes. These are the same acrylic material that we include in my monthly Story Kits™. People have been ordering family names, places, and other special words as well as their word for 2017.

Also, there is absolutely still time to join the One Little Word® workshop if you are interested in making your word visible this year and sharing the journey with others. Please note that although the main kit we were offering this year is sold out, it is absolutely not a requirement for the class and that I will be providing you the downloads necessary to work through the prompts just like I have in previous years.

One Little Word® 2017 | Connect

Another trip around the sun is coming to a close.

My overwhelming feeling at the end of this year is wholehearted thankfulness. For the whole of it. The hard parts and the easy parts and the parts in between. It's something we can count on - that crazy mixture of highs and lows and normals - throughout the 365 days we call a year in our lives.

I absolutely loved focusing on the word "whole" as my One Little Word® for 2016. It is a word that I will carry with me for the rest of my life - "open" is another one that I feel strongly about. Whole challenged me in the ways I needed to be challenged and wrapped me up in goodness in so many other ways. I loved asking questions about the different pieces of my own whole and looking deeper into what it means to me to feel "whole."

It's crazy when I think back on all the words I've had over the years (I started this practice in 2006):

Play Peace Vitality Nurture Story Light Up Open Thrive Give Whole

For 2017 I'm choosing to explore my life through the lens of the word "connect."

I'm ending 2016 and beginning 2017 by connecting directly and in person with my immediate family (parents, brother, sister all their families) at my parents house on the coast. I'm already including "connect" in daily thoughts as I go about the regular stuff of my life - asking myself how I'm connecting with this and that and especially focusing on what I can disconnect from (love the angle of including the opposite of my word).

This blended family life is offering me a whole lot of opportunities for connection and I don't want to miss those. We've all been sinking in to this "new normal" around here - life is such a series of "new normals" isn't it? We get used to a situation or a piece of our lives and then something changes - for better or worse - and then we are forced (either kicking and screaming or accepting or a crazy combination of those emotions) to adapt to the "new" normal. What I have learned over the last so many years is that we are always riding that wave - either in the beginning or the end or somewhere in between. It is life. It is our life. What we get to choose is how we respond and live through all those moments.

In 2017 I hope to specifically investigate areas related to connecting with myself, connecting with others (especially family and community), connecting with work, and connecting with nature/outdoors (I feel a strong pull towards that this year). I also plan to focus on the idea of disconnecting in order to make sure I'm living in alignment with my highest values.

If you'd like to hear me talk more about this topic, check out a new podcast I did earlier this week with Elise about our words from last year and this year. It's a very candid conversation about what's worked and not worked related to both choosing and living with our words.

My wonderful little heart shown above is from  Liz Lamoreux  and is called a Whole Heart Pocket Talisman. It's a wonderful way to keep your word close throughout the year.

December Daily® 2016 | Days 24 & 25

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Days 24 & 25.

Thank you so much for being a part of this community adventure in celebrating our individual seasonal stories. This project continues to be one that I love and treasure and I'm so thankful I've had the opportunity to build a collection of December focused albums over the years.

Today I'm also simply feeling thankful for words and photos and products that support them and finished albums and moving forward with other projects.

Here's a look at what Day 24 turned out looking like:

Day 24 includes a full page photo of
a puzzle that could be one of the hardest puzzles I've encountered. It was perfect for our Christmas Eve and we are still working on it. I'm seeing it in my dreams. I learned about this particular brand (Eeboo) of puzzles from my friend Liz Lamoruex (she has great taste in puzzles) and ordered this one from Amazon.

Next to the puzzle photo I added the "twas the night before Christmas card" and a yellow star journal card in a trimmed page protector (I cut off the outside two pockets). Christmas Eve was super quiet with just Aaron and I and was filled with cooking and the puzzle and
. I loved that we finished up the wrapping the day before and had it all cleaned up so we could just hang out. An Avery Index Tab + a stamp from the December Daily® Christmas Phrases stamp set was attached along the edge of the page protector.

One of my hopes when I work on this project is that through my words and photos and products I am somehow able to capture the spirit of each individual December. Some have been crazy busy and some have been calm and some have been painful and some have been just bursting with happiness. These days my December stories seem to include the mix of all of those emotions at varying degrees.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (and the few days leading up to them) were very calm and quiet with just Aaron and me here at our house. We had lots of time to prepare and cook and hang out and get ready for the whirlwind that came when all the kids arrived here around 2pm.

And the sun was shining. That should absolutely not go un-noticed.

For the start of my story for Christmas Day I included the "10 Things" journal card + the tree pattern paper + a glitter star + the "25" card with a Dec chipboard on top + a "Happy Christmas" messy circle + a photo of Sam the cat in the windowsill. I knew I wanted to include a couple more pages so I just kept adding things into the pockets.

On the back of the messy circle I wrote down what each person's favorite gift was for 2016. I paired that with the
"merry everything" gold foil card and a photo of Aaron looking through the photo book I ordered for him from Artifact Uprising.

As I was adding and editing a couple more photos I felt like I wanted to add more words that summed up this holiday (formatted them to fit on a 3x8). Here's what I wrote:

Just a few words to bring to a close this 2016 Christmas season (that went so tremendously fast). This year I’ve thought a lot about the things that have changed and the things that have stayed the same. This year signals another transition in all of our lives - a merging, a blending, a coming together of our families in a more formal and concrete way. We are all still new at this - sometimes tip-toeing, sometimes diving head-first, sometimes leaping, often times just closing our eyes and hoping for the best. The holidays can be so intense with expectations and histories and the stuff of life. This year we didn’t have the kids before Christmas (we both do one week on/one week off with Christmas Day in the middle) and it really gave Aaron and I a chance to have a quiet, calm, prepared lead up to Christmas Day. Next year it will likely be the opposite and a completely different experience. Things I loved this year: (1) working on a puzzle during the day and (2) when they all showed up right around 2pm with all the excitement that five kids between 7 and 14 entails and (3) drinking champagne while presents were opened and (4) watching It’s A Wonderful Life before bed. I’m not sure just yet exactly what traditions will last for us - what will become “our thing” for Aaron and me and then for all seven of us. Bring it on.

Behind the words I cropped a photo of our tree + presents to 3x8 and added the "happy' rubber phrase from the
Paislee Press Mini Kit

I decided to go big with this one photo of all five of the kids. I was trying to get Audrey in mid-air but ended up with a bunch of blurry options - I love the movement her action gives the photo and it's so representative of how fast these kids move right now. All the other kids are checking out a new keyboard to all of them from Santa.

On the back of the last page I've placed a photo Anna took with an
Instax camera (one of her presents). I was making a kissing-face to her from my spot on the other side of the tree. I like the idea of ending this with a photo of myself this year + that it's from her photo voice. I don't always end my albums with intention the way I begin them with intention (I often just stop and call it good) so I liked picking up this photo and feeling like it was symbolically a nice way to bring this one to a close.

I can't wait to see what next year's December stories will hold.

December Daily® 2016 | Days 22 & 23

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Days 22 & 23.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas holiday and thank you for your patience as I celebrated and made a little merry around here.

I finished up my album today and will be sharing the last four days in two parts - one today that includes Days 22 and 23 and then one final post in the next couple of days that includes Days 24 and 25.

I approached Days 22 and 23 together as those two days were filled of much of the same: shopping, cooking, and hanging out with Aaron. One journal card was enough to cover the simple story I wanted to tell about what we did on those days.

Here's a look at what Day 22 turned out looking like:

The top "Frango" pocket is from candy packaging that we've been eating over the course of the month (my parents dropped them off early in the month and we made them last by hiding them up in the pantry). I took a photo of a bunch of our Christmas cards (taped up on a large chalkboard in our main eating area) and added the white chipboard #22 from the Main Kit on top.

In the video below you'll hear me talk about the simplicity of these days and how I love that part about them. Some days are just about filing in the pockets and other days are about getting creative and other days are focused on the photos or words or the dance of the two together.

Here's a look at what the two days looked like together:

For Day 23 I enlarged a photo I took of our adventure to Costco (
living dangerously I tell you) and added a chipboard star, a chipboard #23 and a couple of printed phrases ("Costco is much more fun together." and "Love these preparation days.").

December Daily® 2016 | Day 20

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Day 20.

Bringing in a little bit of Audrey's voice into the album today by including a drawing she put together and a photo of ornaments that she made while sitting in here with me in the office.

I'm going to start with the pages outside the album (
this one was hard to photograph because the image of her ornaments is already really light):

The structure of today's story includes the back of
Day 19. You might remember that yesterday I cut out tag templates to be able to use when I told my story today. I simply used patterns from the Main Kit and from the Pam Garrison Mini Kit (stars) for the tags. On top of the tags I added a red tinsel embossed chipboard 20 + the "celebrate this" chipboard messy circle

The second page includes a photo of ornaments that Audrey created (she drew pictures of dogs, cats and bunnies) which is adhered to a fold out drawing.

I used an
Avery Index Tab along the inside of her folded drawing. Her drawing includes stamps from the Jasmine Jones December Daily® Cozy Christmas set (she used the mittens, hat, and cup on the cat) and wood veneer trees from the Decor8 Mini Kit and the big gold star from Pam's Kit. It was so cool to see her so happy to be playing with those supplies.

You can see the process of building the fold out in today's video below. Basically I just folded her drawing and cropped my image and journaling to be able to fit on top of the folded portion.

December Daily® 2016 | Day 19

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Day 19.

My journaling for today tells the whole story:

Lots of lounging & screen time today for our cast of characters on the last day everybody was all here before Christmas Day. There was very little arguing and lots of playing and even some time spent organizing the toys in the girls room (sorting “like” things is what I like to call it). There was hot cocoa & pork nachos & chicken chili & cookies made in the Easy Bake Oven. There was Minecraft & Mission Impossible & the wearing of bathrobes and PJ’s & Shopkins & work time for me & some time spent cleaning up the downed tree branches outside (mostly Aaron & Audrey). In the evening Tiffany picked up Simon & Anna and we dropped Isaac & Elliott off for a sleepover with the Darden’s & sat at their kitchen counter for conversation before heading home in a direction where we could see lots of Christmas lights. Tomorrow it will be quiet here and Aaron & I will work and go to the grocery story and do some shopping and make our own bit of merry as we prepare for them to all converge back here in a tornado of joy on Christmas Day. Hey kids - love the moment you are in and embrace it for what it is and remember how much you are loved. Hug all your parents tightly and say thank you and I love you and I’ll see you soon. Have the most awesome time until we see you again.

Here's a look at what Day 19 turned out looking like:

I love this photo. This is one of those photos that I know I will love looking at in the years to come. It's casual. It's real. I had asked them to all come together in the living room so I could take a photo of them all together - my goal was to capture them before we sent them off to be with the extended families. They came from their separate spots in the house to gather on the couch by the tree in the middle of all the "stuff." I took about 10 shots - a couple where I asked them to look at the camera and a couple where I told them to just hang out. I personally love that some of them are looking and some of them aren't. They aren't posed - they are just being them and that's how I love them.

I knew I wanted to enlarge this photo and pair it with words. I considered adding text directly onto the photo but decided to create tags to hold my journaling instead.

The "this" title uses the thin puffy letter stickers from the Main Kit.

The journaling was printed on
Neenah Bright White paper which is one of my favorites for printing digital products for hybrid projects (I had measured one of the other tags and used that are the jumping off point).

The other tags were handcut using the rose gold "let your heart be light" card from the
Decor8 Mini Kit and the "awesome spirit of the season" was a card from the Main Kit. I'm using the Power Punch now for the larger holes in the tags and in the transparency.

The tags are adhered to a thick star transparency that was from
Bella Blvd called Color Chaos Invisibles (currently on clearance at Scrapbook.com). It's a large die cut shape that I cut down to size to fit into my album.

Here you can see the second page of my journaling.

I adhered the other tags first and then used foam dots to adhere this journaling tag on top - I like having it lifted up a bit. I also liked having the #19 just peeking out from the side.

You can see this better in the image below:

You can also see in this photo that the
star piece from Bella Blvd isn't totally transparent - it's even sturdier than others.

Here's a look at the spread outside of the album:

December Daily® 2016 | Days 17 + 18

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Days 17 and 18.

Playing a little catch up today after taking a couple days off this past weekend to celebrate Christmas No.1 with Aaron's family. I wrote on Instagram that I was enjoying and delighting in this multiple Christmas lifestyle and I really and truly am embracing it for what it is with a whole lot of heart.

In this post I'm including both day 17 and 18 and will be back soon with day 19.

Here's a look at what Day 17 turned out looking like:

The bottom portion of this page is actually a flip up booklet that includes 3
cascading waterfall page protectors from We R Memory Keepers merged together using a Fuse Tool (you can see these better in the video below). It was an easy way to add more photos without adding additional pages.

I added red grossgrain pleat ribbon from
Maya Road to the outside of the page protector to cover up some of the seam created by the Fuse tool (see video) and additional adhesive.

The "let's be merry" card is from the
Pam Garrison December Daily® Mini Kit and the wood tree is from the Decor8 Mini Kit

metal rimmed circle tag is holding a 1-inch circle punched piece of white cardstock with #17 on top (Pendleton Alpha Stickers) on the printed transparency page (a limited number bonus item for the Main Kit). I repeated another circle tag on the back as you'll see on Day 18 below.

On top of the first photo I added the yellow star from the
December Daily® Chipboard set and a word/phrase sticker from Tim Holtz's Holiday Talk set

A photo around the table and a photo by my favorite painting in his parents house.

A photo of Anna, Audrey and Grandma Ann followed by a photo of Simon and Aaron's Dad. These super fun
rainbow umbrella hats were included in everyone's stocking.

All these photos were printed on my
Epson PictureMate PM400 printer

Anna was super excited about that
Easy Bake Oven.

Journaling card was adapted from one of the
4x6 December Stories Vol. 3 Layered Templates. I simply deleted the photo boxes and moved the word art to the center of the 4x6 canvas. Font is Remington Noiseless.

For Day 18 I decided to focus on the story of Aaron putting up the Christmas lights on the porch after we got back home from his parents.

For my story on the 18th I printed out a 6x8 inch photo and wrote directly onto it using a
gold metallic marker. I paired the gold foil messy circle + the white chipboard 18 (both from the Main Kit) with the small gold foil "joy" chipboard circle from the Pam Garrison December Daily® Mini Kit

My journaling was about how last year I was making my own magic when I hung up the lights on the porch and how this year I've got him to help me. It's a story that's meaningful to me and I love that these albums show the procession of life captured via December stories.

Here's a look at
that story last year

December Daily® 2016 | Day 16

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Day 16.

Today I'm sharing a spread that includes an enlarged photo of an ornament on our tree + a 4x6 photo of some of the kids at the table and features a 3x8 December gratitude list.

EDITED: Also, just a heads up that I'm heading out to celebrate Christmas No. 1 with Aaron's family so I'm going to take a couple days off from my album and will play catch up when we get back.

One of the questions I've been seeing a bunch on Facebook is about photographing projects and/or things like ornaments or other special holiday items to include in your album. Around here I've been using white foam core board (you can find this at craft supply stores or even somewhere like Target) placed on the floor near a window but not directly under it. I shoot straight down onto my project or at an angle. To get as much natural light as possible I turn off the lights in the room and just use the light coming in from the window. Around here at this time of year there's not a lot of sun - mostly just grey days - and the amount of hours where light is available is limited. I take photos of my projects usually between 10:30am and noon - if I wait much longer than that it's too dark - the "sun" goes down around 4:30pm.

When I import my photos into Photoshop I usually edit them to make them brighter by using Levels, Curves and/or Brightness/Contrast.

Here is a look at what Day 16 turned out looking like (two spreads):

We did a little tree decorating yesterday which ended up being nice supports for the story of documenting gratitudes. I first enlarged the photo of the snowman ornament to 7 inches x 8.25 inches which is about the same size as a page protector (including the holes). I adhered that to the back of the image from Day 15.

The middle 3x8 page protector holds a strip of pattern paper from the Main Kit + numbers from my
Cascade Alpha + a small gold chipboard star.

The "
giving thanks in December" comes from a set of December Stories 3x8 Layered Templates - this set also includes a printable PDF so you can easily just print them out. I loved adding in the combination of silly stuff and serious stuff and head stuff and heart stuff.

The last page of the spread includes a "gratitude" card from the
Jasmine Jones December Daily® Mini Kit + a messy circle and small cheer rubber circle from the Main Kit + "merry and bright" chipboard from the Pam Garrison December Daily® Mini Kit

On top of the snowman ornament photo I added the "spread love" chipboard piece from
Pam's kit + two small gold chipboard stars from the Main Kit.

Here's a look at it outside of the album:

December Daily® 2016 | Day 15

Welcome to
December Daily® 2016 | Day 15.

A big freezing rain/ice storm caused all kinds of havoc around here yesterday and today. Katie's power was out for over 24 hours - luckily at this point we still have it here. Schools are closed so the kids were loving it. I was going to do a story about gratitude today but I think I'll leave that for another day so I can include this photo of some of our trees encased in ice. Beautiful, but man it can really cause damage.

Here are a few shots around my house/yard:

As a reminder, here's what Day 15 looked like as a foundation page:

Obviously I'm still moving things around - totally okay with that on my end.

Here's a look at what Day 15 turned out looking like:

I decided to go with a black and white photo of the trees along a portion of our back fence (photo sized to the full size of the page protectors + printed on my
Canon Pixma MG7720). I took a photo with a lot of sky knowing I could create a home for my journaling in that space. I also measured the size of that transparent label from the Paislee Press December Daily® Mini Kit and drew a box in Photoshop that was the same size and then aligned my journaling box next to it. The font I'm using for journaling today is Sentinel

On top of the transparent label I used the white letter stickers from the Main Kit and ended up with a mix of upper and lower case. A
Tiny Attacher was used to staple it in place.

I used the "15" chipboard from the Main Kit and added some
Ranger Snowflake Tinsel Embossing Powder on top. Additional accents include a phrase sticker from Tim Holtz and a small silver star from a past Story Kit™.

Here's a look at it outside of the album:

In the video you'll see that I also ordered and tested out
a different hole punch (Power Punch) vs. the Crop A Dile. Mine ended up having some kind of yellow rusty liquid come off of it while I was punching the hole - not what I wanted to have happen. I also found it hard to see where the hole was going to be punched (even though I hold my Crop A Dile in a way that makes it harder to see too). I'm not sure about that tool yet - I tried to wipe off the yellow rusty part with a cloth but it still ended up coming out again on the next hole I punched. I'll likely test it out a few more times. You can see the size difference of the holes on my page above - the bottom hole is the new tool vs. the Crop A Dile that I've been using.
