Shopping adventures in Seattle

Neile Graham took me shopping in the Ballard area, where Eileen G (who was waiting for the plumber to be done at her house) and Vonda McIntyre were meeting at Ray's for lunch. Before we got to Value Village--a huge thrift shop that was our first destination, we passed a corner fleamarket and stopped. Where I picked up one large jawbone with three teeth of...something--too large for a horse. Also a pelvis of....something. Plus a long wooden thingie, a small very heavy antique iron used for lac...

Finished with Clarion West!

After a grueling but satisfying five days I'm finished teaching the fifth week of Clarion West, here in Seattle.
Great class and a lot of really good stories, some of which are just about ready to submit.

Traditionally, each class gives the teacher a gift and this class did me proud. Learning of my love for and collection of doll heads and parts, and hearing from me about the Chernobyl kitty (two headed) that I received from my last Clarion West class in 2006, they really went to town.

They e...

Off to Seattle

I leave today for Seattle where I'll be teaching at Clarion West this Monday-Friday. I'll be checking email and that's probably all during the five days I'm teaching but might have time to peek my head up when it's done after next Saturday. Back the 28th. In the meantime, two out of town guests will be caring for (or being cared for) by Bella and Sophie.

I hope I'll see Seattle people at next week's Clarion party.

Be good while I'm away. ;-)

Poker Night, 20 years on

Way back in the 80s, a bunch of female editors and agents got together on a fairly regular basis for friendly dinners. We called it poker night, even though we never played poker. Shawna McCarthy had the idea of reviving the custom with those members of the group still in NYC so here are most of us

We figured out that among the ten of us, we have 317 years of experience in publishing.

Terri Windling art half price sale

Terri is slashing the price of some of her art in order to help pay medical costs for a family member. If you've ever wanted to own a Terri Windling painting but didn't think you could afford one, take a look at:

Terri Windling's studio shop.

Readercon and the Shirley Jackson Award

I had a ball at Readercon, even though I crashed (very) early Saturday night, probably because I gave blood earlier in the day so missed Howard Waldrop's reading and all the parties that night. But I was up bright and early for breakfast with the Locus folk, Amelia and Liza, the Shirley Jackson Awards at which I was very pleased to accept the Award for Poe, as Best edited anthology.
Here's the entire slate of winners and nominees:

NOVEL
Winner:
BIG MACHINE, Victor LaValle
(Speigel & Grau)

Finalists...

Ah...and Lovecraft art

I can't believe I almost forgot to mention that I met the lovely vschanoes and I had a yummy lunch at Tea and Sympathy -with iced peach tea (free refills and all) and then braved the heat --at least it was better than yesterday) to Brooklyn near the Gowanus Canal (we walked across it) to Observatory, an art gallery that has a free exhibition of art inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. There were some wonderfully accurate figurines of some of his creatures, art by artists I'm not familiar with, but ...

Two nice reviews of Digital Domains and off to Readercon

AskDeb asks What are the Best 2010 Summer Books? and responds with a great mini-review of Digital Domains

and The New York Journal of Books also has some great things to say about the anthology.

Tomorrow morning, (very early) I'm off to Burlington, Massachusetts to attend Readercon for the weekend. I'll be using my brand new netbook for the first time but doubt I'll be doing more than checking email.

See you all back here Sunday night.
