Seven Questions Answered
This post is in my Twelve Days of Christmas series.
I mentioned yesterday that I hosted a Q&A on online marketing on Twitter earlier this month. Thank you all for your questions. Here are just seven of them, with my responses in slightly more than 140 characters this time! You'll notice I'm using Twitter Blackbird Pie, which I mentioned in Tuesday's post, to embed the tweeted questions.
Look out for more Q&As next year!

@getuptospeed How simple is it 4 absolute beginners to get started in online marketing, how important are domain names & usernames? #askjonDecember 10, 2010 6:29 pm via webFrugaldom
NYK Media
It's really very easy to get started: Facebook pages and Twitter accounts are very quick and easy to set up, and you cane be up and running with a WordPress.com blog in minutes. However, it is important to be clear about your goals at the outset. Your marketing aims and objectives should come before the tools you use.
The important thing about domain names and usernames is to choose ones that reflect what people are likely to search for to find you. Often you will be constrained by your business name, but choose names with search terms in mind where you can. For example, if you do a search for 'publishing' on Twitter, my @publishingtalk account will show up in the people results – a new Twitter feature in 2010. The increased visibility on Twitter this gives has also contributed to a doubling in follower numbers this year. The same principle applies when choosing names for Facebook pages, YouTube accounts and so on.

One of my favourite examples from this year was Shoes of Prey, an Australian online shoe retailer who tripled sales by engaging an 'influencer' on YouTube – and maintained their 300% sales uplift.

@getuptospeed #askjon what are your recommendations for updating all social networks at same time?December 10, 2010 6:23 pm via Twitter for iPadsamatlounge
Sam Missingham
Updating multiple accounts at same time can be a great way to reduce the workload. For example, you can make your tweets automatically become your Facebook status and LinkedIn status. However, it is important to be aware that your audiences may be subtly different on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn – for example Twitter is better for real time information, news and links; Facebook tends to be more personal, since it is a more closed network than Twitter (for profiles if not pages); LinkedIn is a more professional audience. It can therefore be inappropriate or annoying to make the same status appear everywhere at the same time all the time.
You can push tweets through to Facebook and LinkedIn selectively using #fb or #in hashtags at the end of your tweets. Only those tweets that end in the appropriate hashtag will then become your Facebook or LinkedIn status. To set this up, install the Selective Tweet Status app in Facebook, and adjust your settings in the LinkedIn Tweets app.

Following social media people & blogs on Twitter helps, e.g. @mashable. I also attend conferences and events, and read books and blogs on online marketing, all of which helps keep up with latest developments. As well as simply using social media, of course – a lot!
Look our for more Q&As in 2011 – and feel free to send me your online marketing questions in the meantime!

I'll be running more Q&As this year, and will also be giving away more signed copies during Social Media Week (7th-11th February). Make sure you're following @getuptospeed to be in with a chance!

Four WordPress Plugins
This post is in my Twelve Days of Christmas series.
Originally, the four "calling birds" of the Twelve Days of Christmas were actually four "colly birds" – another name for blackbirds. And the first of my four recommended WordPress plugin today is called Twitter Blackbird Pie.
1. Twitter Blackbird Pie
Sometimes you want to quote a tweet in a blog post. To make it more visual, you could post a graphic image of a screenshot in your post and link it to the URL for the individual tweet. Or you can installed Twitter Blackbird Pie and have fully embedded HTML representations of actual tweets in your blog posts in a couple of clicks. The latest version even puts a blackbird button in the toolbar of your text editor (top right).
I used it to quote the two tweets in the post about my book launch, for example: these aren't cut-and-pased graphics – they're embedded HTML, styled in the same way as the Twitter account they're quoted from, sized to fit the post, and with fully clickable links in the tweets. It looks like this:
#bbpBox_19848955433066496{background:#C0DEED url(http://a1.twimg.com/profile_backgroun...) !important;padding:20px;}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet{background:#fff;padding:10px 12px 10px 12px !important;margin:0 !important;min-height:48px;color:#28769d !important;font-size:18px !important;line-height:22px;-moz-border-radius:5px;-webkit-border-radius:5px}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet a {color:#759e28 !important}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet span.metadata{display:block;width:100%;clear:both;margin-top:8px !important;padding-top:12px !important;height:40px;border-top:1px solid #e6e6e6}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author{line-height:19px}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet span.metadata span.author img{float:left;margin:0 7px 0px 0px !important;width:38px;height:38px;padding:0 !important;border:none !important;}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet a:hover{text-decoration:underline}#bbpBox_19848955433066496 p.bbpTweet span.timestamp{font-size:12px;display:block}
On the 4th day of Christmas I'm recommending to you: Four WordPress Plugins http://bit.ly/fLtpkv35 minutes ago via bitly[image error]getuptospeed
Jon Reed
If you ever quote tweets in your blog posts, this plugin is indispensible. I'll be using it a lot more in future.
2. Zemanta
Zemanta is a great time-saving plugin. It allows readers to re-blog extracts from your post, but its real advantage for bloggers is the editorial help it gives you in the back-end. As you write, it will automatically suggest links, images and related blog posts that you can add to your post with a single click. There are a few Zemanta-suggested related posts at the end of this post as an example.
3. Contact Form 7
A contact form is a must-have for any blog or website. Contact Form 7 does the work for you, embedding a form that people can use to get in touch with you on any page you wish.
4. Sexy Bookmarks
Add social bookmarking buttons to the end of your posts – such as 'Tweet this', 'Share on Facebook', 'Add to Delicious' and so on – with Sexy Bookmarks. Other social bookmarking button plugins are available – but this is my favourite because of the wide range of buttons available, and the nice 3D animated pop-up effect when you hover over a button. You can see it in action at the end of this post.

Two Twitter Birds
This post is is my Twelve Days of Christmas series. See all of my festive gifts.
[image error]On the second day of Christmas, I'm giving you two Twitter birds! Or at least my thoughts on why two Twitter accounts are better than one.
I often come across confusion about what authentic tweeting means. Just tweeting promotional messages is boring and won't get you many followers. Telling people what you had for breakfast is inane (do peope really do that? I suspect it is a mythical use of Twitter put about by people who don't use it).
Where is the happy balance between personal and professional? Why not have separate accounts for each? Tweet useful tips, news and links in your niche topic area on a business account; and use a separate personal account for your random thoughts.
The important thing is to tweet appropriately, and to tweet content that the people who follow you want to read. If you're a mainstream news service – say, ITV News – your personal thoughts on Nigella Lawson are irrelevant to your followers – and embarrassing if you mix up your twitter accounts.
The great thing about Twitter is that you can have multiple accounts. And the New Twitter design allows for links in your profile description for the first time – both Twitter @usernames and standard web addresses. This means it is even easier to link between your Twitter accounts.
If people are interested to find out more about the person behind the tweets, they can always click through to your personal account…
…where they can also find links to your other business accounts.
I have half a dozen Twitter accounts, and most are of the 'useful news feed' variety. My personal account, however, is just me sharing my personal thoughts on current affairs, what I'm watching on TV, and indulging my interest in online wit, whimsy and wordgames. Great for keeping up with friends and followers, but it would drive my Publishing Talk community mad with the irrelevant inanity of it all. They want to know about publishing – not which tie David Dimbleby is wearing on #bbcqt.
If your business is intimately tied to you as a person, you may be able to use just the one account. Otherwise, keep them separate, and retweet between them where it seems appropriate.

A Podcast in a Directory
This post is is my Twelve Days of Christmas series. See all of my festive gifts.
It's the first day of Christmas (I hope you're having a very merry one!), so here is the first of my twelve gifts to you. How festive. And on the first day of Christmas, what else would you give but a podcast in a directory? (That just about scans, right?)
OK, it's not quite ready to subscribe to in iTunes, but The Get Up to Speed podcast will get going in the New Year, with a few episodes comprising mostly interviews with people who contributed case studies to the book, plus some new cases.
It can take a short while to get a new podcast listed in iTunes – which is really the only podcast directory that matters. One of the things you'll need is a podcover – a 300 x 300 pixel image, such as the one above, to illustrate your podcast and make it stand out in iTunes.
Watch this space, and I'll let you know as soon as you can subscribe!
Find out how to get your podcast listed in iTunes
Let me know if you'd like to be interviewed for a case study.

Twitterati out in force for #getuptospeed book launch
Keith Mansfield, David Allen Green, Mario Menti, Sally Bercow
Despite the freezing conditions, the Twitterati were out in force for the #getuptospeed book launch tweetup – thank you so much for coming! Those helping me celebrate the publication of my first book included friends from the worlds of publishing, politics and social media – some old friends, and some new friends who I've met on Twitter over the last year or so.
There was a Twitterwall, books to sign, Christmas decorations, mulled cider and fabulous friends. What more could you want?
My social life increasingly revolves around tweetups these days, and it was nice to see representatives from the London Book Trade Tweetups, Salon Intoxicante and #battertweet – a local tweetup in Battersea, South London.
Twitterati included political tweeter Sally Bercow, who I was delighted to meet at last – alongside her lawyer, fellow Salonista David Allen Green. David is otherwise known as the blogger Jack of Kent and is also the unofficial High Sherrif of Twitter: he's been defending Paul Chambers in the #twitterjoketrial this year.
Mario Menti was there, a fellow #battertweeter and inventor of Twitterfeed - a great free service that I recommend in the book, and have been recommending everywhere else for years. Other #battertweeters included Jack Bremer of 3B Digital and Isabel Losada – author of the The Battersea Park Road to Enlightenmentand a regular attendee of the London Book Trade Tweetups. Other author friends included Keith Mansfield, author of the Johnny Mackintosh
trilogy as well as being a publisher at OUP.

Other old publishing friends included Louise Bainbridge from my BPS days, Rich Homan from my time at Macmillan, and Suzanne Kavanagh, Jude Bowen and Nina Stibbe (all the way from Cornwall!) from the Routledge years. Randomly, Nina also knew Suzanne Collier and Anne Nolan who I've only known for the last year via my workshops and the book trade tweetups.

Had a lovely evening at @JonReed's launch for #getuptospeed. Great to see @SuzanneCollier and @mafunyane and to meet @ninastibbe again.December 6, 2010 11:47 pm via webannemnolan

You know, it sometimes feels like everyone knows everyone else, somewhere in a Twittery social networking Venn diagram.
Those who came who are on Twitter can be found at @getuptospeed/booklaunch.
Here are a few iPhone snaps of the night. There are more in the Flickr group – and do contribute your own if you were there – especially if you took better ones than me! Anne Nolan also blipped one of me signing copies on the night.
Thanks again for making it a fun evening!

Signed copies of "Get Up to Speed" available to order for Christmas!
Don't forget a Christmas gift for the entrepreneur in your life! And what could be more festive than a copy of Get Up to Speed with Online Marketing? I'll even lower the eBay re-sale value for you by signing it if you want.
OK, you can have one of the rarer unsigned copies if you prefer. Either way, you can now order directly from this site, for delivery anywhere in the world, with a personalized message if you wish.
Please note that the recommended last Christmas posting dates from the UK are:
6 Dec – South & Central America, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Far East (including Japan), Australia and New Zealand (airmail)
10 Dec – Eastern Europe, USA and Canada (airmail)
13 Dec – Western Europe (airmail)
21 Dec – UK (first class)
You can, of course, also order unsigned copies from Amazon.co.uk, Foyles, Waterstones, WHSmith and (if you're in South Africa), Kalahari.net.

Launch Events – December 2010
[image error]
OK, I have finally got around to a launch event or two. Or three… Do come along, if you can – or simply follow along on Twitter!
Monday 6th Dec – Book Launch – London
Join me from 6.30pm at the Yorkshire Grey for a book launch tweetup to celebrate the recent publication of Get Up to Speed with Online Marketing. For more details see the Facebook event or the Twtvite.
If you can't make it, you can still follow the action with the hashtag #getuptospeed.
Tuesday 7th Dec – London Business Book Club / Like Minds – London
I will be speaking at – or, rather, in conversation with – the London Business Book Club, talking about Get Up to Speed with Online Marketing between 7pm and 10pm. This event is co-produced with Like Minds, and is at their rather lovely business club in the Grand Hotel next to Trafalgar Square. For more details, see the Facebook event or book your place at Eventbrite.
Friday 10th Dec – Twitter Q&A and Giveaway – Your computer!
If you're not in London, or even the UK, you can still join me for a virtual launch event on Friday 10th Dec on Twitter, where I will be answering your online marketing questions, and giving away some signed copies.
Follow me on Twitter at @getuptospeed for more details.
Meanwhile, good luck with your online marketing!
All the best,
Jon
