National Suicide Prevention Week
Early readers of All the Bright Places know that one of the subjects it tackles is teen suicide. Years ago, I loved and lost a boy to suicide, and that heartbreaking event inspired my first YA book.
In honor of National Suicide Prevention Week, Germ Magazine is doing its part to spread the word: You are important. It’s not your fault. Help is out there.

My mom’s book family paid tribute at Monday’s memorial service, including Carl Sandburg’s granddaughter Paula Steichen Polega, Edward Steichen’s granddaughter Francesca Calderone-Steichen, Thornton Wilder’s nephew Tappan Wilder, and members of the James Earl Jones family and the Blanton Belk family. Words flowed and so did the tears. (at Wake Forest University)

A Celebration of Penelope Niven
My mother, Penelope Niven— best friend, mentor, soul mate, inspiration— passed away last Thursday, August 28 very unexpectedly.
She was the most beautiful person I have ever known. We always told each other, “You are my best.” And she was. And she always will be. Forever.
Join me in celebrating her life, her contributions, and the many lives she impacted on Monday, September 8, at 11:00 am at Wake Forest University’s Brendle Recital Hall, Scales Fine Arts Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/) or the CP3 Foundation (the Chris Paul Foundation: http://www.cp3foundation.org/).
