Ken Murray made a name for himself making behind-the-scenes movies of Hollywood stars, a hobby that began in 1927 when he moved to California from New York. Instead of mailing postcards to his family back east, he bought a 16mm camera and started filming celebrities and sending the footage home.
The Hollywood of American Blonde is alive and well in this clip from Murray’s collection of home movies. Watch Judy Garland play tennis as Lombard and Gable look on! Watch Tarzan make a phone call! Eleanor Powell do a handstand! June Allyson sunbathe! Jean Harlow play golf!

Once upon a time, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was the biggest movie studio in the world, with the biggest roster of stars. The Hollywood of American Blonde is alive and well in this 1949 video of MGM’s 25th anniversary, when its giant roster of stars gathered together for a luncheon hosted by Louis B. Mayer.
Oh, to have been there! I just can’t decide who I would have liked to sit by most… Errol Flynn or Clark Gable or Gene Kelly… or Lassie?
