We’ve found this Reusable Snack Pouch Sewing Tutorial by Silvia Sutters over at the BERNINA We All Sew Blog. We’ve modified this project to include two fabrics per pouch; an outer fabric and an inner fabric.

Reusable Fabric Snack Pouch Sewing Supplies List

1/2 yd each two or more assorted Farmer’s Market Fruits & Veggies Fabrics

Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge

Four Cones Coordinating Serger Cone Threads

Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12

4-Thread Serger Sewing Machine, such as a bernette b64 AIRLOCK Overlocker

Double-Eyed Needle

Optional: Clover’s Wonder Clips

Cut Fabrics for each pouch:

Cut one 7-1/2″ x 15-1/2″ rectangle for outside fabric.Cut one 7-1/2″ x 15-1/2″ rectangle for inner lining fabric.

Set serger for a standard 4-thread overlock seam and insert a new Schmetz ELx 705 Serger Needles Size 80/12 .Place one outer rectangle and one inner rectangle wrong sides together. Stitch short edges along top and bottom of each pouch.

Fold pouch bottom up 6-3/4″. Starting at the bottom, stitch along one side, stopping at pouch center.

Fold pouch top down 2-1/4″ over bottom pouch and continue stitching entire side seam. Repeat steps on remaining pouch side.Use a Double-Eyed Needle to re-thread serger tails into previous stitched seams.

Preshrink fabrics by steaming and pressing, and steaming and pressing a second time, and then spray press and starch fabric with June Tailor’s Quilter’s Starch Savvy — press and starch, press and starch.

 

 

 

 

In today’s sewing tutorial, we’re making our Sew-In-A-Cinch Gift Bag in size small. 

Choose one outer bag fabric and one accent fabric.

Cut Fabric and Supplies

Cut two 4″ x 10″ rectangles for accent fabric strips.

Cut two 10″ x 13″ rectangles for outer gift bag.

Cut two 30″ lengths of ribbon and angle cut short ends to prevent fraying.

 

Stitch

Align one 4″ x 10″ rectangle with one 10″ x 13″ rectangle, right sides together, at bag top as shown.Pin.Stitch or serve top edge forming bag front.

Press seam towards bag.Repeat steps above and stitch bag back.Serge or zig zag around all outside edges of front and back bag units.

 

Align bag front with bag back, right sides together, matching seams at sides. Pin.

Set Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge at 6″, and mark a line at 6″ below top edge along one side seam using Clover’s Chaco Liner.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 6-3/4″ and mark a second line below first marking.Repeat steps above and mark opposite side seam.

Assemble and Finish

Pin bag front to bag back along side seams.

Stitch side seams only.

Be sure to skip stitching between marked lines.

Press seams open using a seam stick.

At bag bottom, use Nancy Zieman’s “Wrapped Corner” technique to “wrap” sideseams toward bag center – folding along previous stitched line.

At sewing machine use Clover’s Straight Tailor’s Awl/ Stiletto to assist feeding fabric layers under presser foot and stitch bag bottom seam.

Fold accent strip to bag inside, along seam.Press.

Set Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 3-1/4″, and mark a line across accent strip at 3-3/4″ below top fold – using Clover’s Chaco Liner.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 2-1/4″ and mark a second line across accent strip.

Repeat steps above marking lines on reverse side. Pin.Stitch in the round along marked lines.

Turn bag right side out.Use Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner to push out lower corners.Press.

 

Create Cinching Ribbon Ties

Using Clover’s Clip n Glide Bodkin, insert one ribbon into casing opening along one side seam.

Insert ribbon all the way around bag and exit at the same opening as inserted. Remove Clip ’n Glide Bodkin.

Tie a knot near ribbon ends.

Using Clover’s Clip n Glide Bodkin, insert a second ribbon into opening at opposite side seam.

Insert ribbon all the way around bag and exit at the same opening as inserted. Remove Clip ’n Glide Bodkin.

Tie a knot near ribbon ends.

Pull ribbons at opposite ends to cinch bag closed!

Optional: Create Lower Gussets

Turn bag inside out.Stack lower seam to side seam.Adjust Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge to 1-1/2″ and align center of gauge to center of side seam.Mark a straight line at 1-1/2″ inside lower corner, as shown.

 

Stitch along marked line.Repeat steps above and stitch opposite lower corner gusset.

Add gussets to any bag to create a bag with depth. Note: Adding 1-1/2″ gussets at lower bag will shorten bag height by 1-1/2″.

Turn bag right side out.Pull ribbons at opposite ends to cinch bag closed!

They are also great for use by people recovering from surgery. You’re the designer, choose your favorite fabrics to create the Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper, Team NZP chose the following.

Prepare your fabrics! Pre-shrink fabrics by steaming and pressing. Then, stabilize fabrics for the sewing process by pressing and starching fabrics with Quilter’s Starch Savvy.

Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper

Approx. finished size 18″

We chose four coordinating fabrics, three fabrics for the Dresden wedges, and one fabric for the center circle.

Cut 8″ Crosswise Fabric strips from three fabrics: Marbleized Crimson, Marbleized Scarlet Red, and Marbleized Forest Green.

Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Ten wedges from Marbleized Crimson.Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Five wedges from Marbleized Scarlet Red.Using the Easy Dresden Ruler Template cut Five wedges from Marbleized Forest Green.

Cut a total of 20 wedges per complete Dresden Plate or circle.Layout Dresden wedges as shown below.

 

Set sewing machine to a 2.0 stitch length.

Fold wedges right sides together along the lengeth of the wedge. Stitch wedges along the top–with scant 1/4″ seams.

Chain stitch wedges together.

Using Clover’s “Quick Cut” Thread Cutter, or scissors, clip threads between wedges.

Using Clover’s Point 2 Point turner, turn points right sides out.

Using Clover’s NEW! Hot Hemmer Square, align seam at one corner diagonal line and press.

Repeat steps above with for all wedges and layout Dresden Plate as shown below.

Align two wedges right sides together and stitch with scant 1/4″ seam.

Continue stitching five wedges together.

Five Dresden wedges create one quarter of the Dresden Plate or circle.Press seams open.

Use Tailor’s Clapper to set seam.

Repeat steps above and create the four quarters of the Dresden Plate.

Stitch top two quarter-assemblies together, using a scant 1/4″ seam.Stitch remaining bottom quarter-assemblies together, using a scant 1/4″ seam.

Stitch top and bottom assemblies together.

 

Create Center Circle

Cut one 4-1/2″ square from Marbleized Marigold Yellow and cut one 4-1/2″ square from Pellon’s ShirTailor Interfacing.Place right sides together with glue dots facing away from fabric.

 

 

We’re making a 4″ center circle for the center of our Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper. 

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and a Frixion Pen, trace a 4″ Circle on the interfacing.Optional: Pin.

Stitch on the marked line using a short stitch length.

 

Use a 45 mm rotary pinking blade and trim away excess fabric, approx. 1/4″ outside stitching line.

 

When using a pinking blade, cut on the back side of cutting mat.

Using a scissors, cut away excess interfacing on the inside of the stitch line, leaving approx. 1″ of interfacing.

 

Turn interfacing to the wrong side.

Use Clover’s Point 2 Point Turner to assist with turning and smoothing of the curved seam allowance.

Using June Tailor’s Eze-View Pressing Cloth and press ShirTailor Interfacing to wrong side of fabric.

Place Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper Assembly right side up on cutting mat.

Using Clover’s 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge, place center circle onto center of Dresden Poinsettia Assembly. Pin.

Stitch center circle to Dresden Poinsettia Table Topper with coordinating thread or monofilament thread. Choose a straight stitch, blanket stitch, or other decorative stitch.

Add Backing

 

Team NZP chose Felt for backing our Table Topper.

Place Table Topper wrong side up on table.Measure table topper diameter from Dresden wedge valley to valley, across widest width of Dresden Plate.

Subtract an 1/8″ to 1/4″ from this measurement, to determine felt backing circle diameter.Using Clover’s Supersize 5-in-1 Sliding Gauge and Frixion Marking Pen, mark the felt backing circle cutting line onto the wrong side of felt.

Cut out backing circle along marked line.

Place Dresden Plate wrong side up on table.

Pin or use fabric glue to temporarily hold backing in place.Place backing circle to wrong side of Dresden Table Topper.

Handstitch backing in place, using needle and thread.

Your Dresden Table Topper is complete!
