CBR - Jamal Igle Introduces The World of "Molly Danger"
Gail Simone talks with Jamal Igle about his creator-owned project Molly Danger, which is only 3 days away from it’s deadline.

“To most people, Jamal Igle is a gifted artist, a born storyteller, and an endlessly gracious presence online. To me, he’s simply the one who got away.
I’ve been a fan of Jamal’s for ages. Many artists draw with talent, many artists draw with craft. Jamal has those things in huge supply, but what sets him apart is that he draws with heart. Few superhero artists draw emotion so convincingly, with such aching expertise, as Jamal.
When he draws a beautiful woman, she is a character, she catches the eye as a lovely human being, not as a collection of porny cliches. When he draws heroism, it’s one of those perfect combinations of artist and subject, that perfect note struck by just the right player.”
I hope people go read this. Jamal is one of the best guys I know, a RIDICULOUSLY gifted and dedicated artist, and he knows how to make awesome comics.
He wants to make a comic he can give to his daughter, about a ten year old superhero.
There are just three days left for him to raise just over 8k.
Please go read the interview. I know money is tight, but even spreading the word helps a lot!
Thank you!
November 3rd is LGBT Ally Appreciation Day
I wait, like the kraken, to grumpily say it is humiliating that people feel like they deserve a pat on the back for treating me like a human being.
Also the idea that straight people decide when they’re being Good Allies is not what being an ally is about, at all.
Why. Does. This. Exist.
Ugh I’m gonna be so mean if people mention this around me.

Goddamn it, why do “allies” need a day?

I’d like to invite you all to just take a moment to appreciate the fact that Taskmaster being a Spice Girls fan is canon
I loved writing Tasky, even if he has terrible taste in music.

As I reread Batgirl...

As I reread Batgirl for about the thousandth time while making strawberry muffins, two thoughts occur to me:
1. How many hours was Mrs. Gordon over there to make all those baked goods? And what was Alysia doing during that time, apart from staring in horror?
2. I really need to try cranberry banana muffins. They sound delicious.
Heh.
It’s interesting how many of the average family’s interactions revolve around food. For some, it’s the only social time they spend together. Mothers pass on recipes to daughters like the wisdom of the matriarchy, dads teach their sons to make perfect burgers on the grill. Food is constantly being used as gift, medicine, consolation prize, bribe, reward, on and on…
I swear, I know some people who only seem to communicate through food.
I think Barbara, Sr. is trying to recapture something here, trying to make up for something she knows she didn’t give Barbara as a kid. So in this case, it’s food as absolution, as time travel.
I find their relationship to be equal parts pain and hope.
Also, Alysia was probably afraid to go in the kitchen once the ingredients started flying. ;)
My mom doesn’t cook; my dad grew up in a restauranting family. My mother taught me about driving, about patience, about music, and my father taught me to stuff a turkey and experiment with spices.
I hate the stereotype that women bake and men grill. My mother rarely baked, my father rarely grilled. My brother and I learned food from our dad, and there were never cookies involved.
But give me a Buckingham Nicks record, a sizzling pan and a knife, and I’m back in my dad’s kitchen.
As dad would say: “Cooking is the best hobby - you get to eat your mistakes.” (And he would follow that up with “Why can’t you do that with parenting!” but that’s just cause he’s a dad.)
I was actually speaking of stereotypes…sorry that wasn’t more clear.

Work is sending me back to Orlando again next week. HERE I COME, EPCOT!
I hope you have a lovely time while you’re there :)
Thank you, sweetpea! I’m bringing my mom with me this time….
YOU MUST TELL ME EVERYTHING.
I love Epcot SO MUCH.

Morality with Bane
A lead pipe in the ornaments is The Right Thing To Do.
Dedicated to my mate Alysonwheel, as we were discussing this scene and more a few weeks ago.
Well, Bane has a strict code.
Only clobber a guy in the ornaments if it’s righteous.

This is probably not the prettiest picture we took, but it’s my absolute favourite.
It looks like she falls and tried to reach for someone’s hand, but there is no one. I think it looks kinda.. as if she’s shocked. Someone betrayed or disappointed her. Agh, I have so many thoughts because of that picture! My fav!
photography as always by Janet Drake Photography and Costuming
Honest to god, that is amazing.

Can't Believe It
The Kickstarter that I am doing with my much-loved Secret Six collaborator, Jim Calafiore, LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS, is exactly halfway through it’s pledge duration…it was for 37 days, and we are at about 18 1/2 days left.
I’ll be honest, we had no idea how this would go. It was a leap of faith, in YOU guys. We felt strongly we could make a good book, and we knew we want to work together.
But there was absolutely no way of knowing if support would be there for an original graphic novel set outside the DC universe by this team. It was completely a creative gamble.
You guys answered this with guns blazing. We just, we had no idea.
We did a signed script incentive we thought would last all month, they were gone in fifteen minutes. People spread the word before we’d even managed to ask them to, they just took it upon themselves to get the word out. Small blogs and big mammoth sites put us on their crowdsource pick lists. And industry people spread the word and pledged themselves in support.
I asked some of my best artist friends to contribute sketches for incentives, people like Yildiray Cinar, Nicola Scott, Mike Norton, Mike Oeming, Ethan Van Sciver, Joe Prado, Bernard Chang, and others. Then I immediately felt guilty, like I was imposing and sent another letter saying please forget the previous letter, that was too big an imposition.
Every single one said they would contribute a sketch anyway.
I am moved by the people who big on the huge incentives, and I am moved by the people who bid a dollar because that is all they could afford. And I am incredibly moved by the multitude of people who wanted the book. That’s very, very happy-making.
One of the cutest stories is from a girl who wanted to put herself and her girlfriend in the book, so she wrote and asked if it was okay to pledge twice. Pretty freaking adorable.
People sent advice and critiques and suggestions, and offers of help in lots of different ways. It’s incredibly encouraging and an entirely different way of making comics. Neither Jim nor I have ever experienced anything like it before. It’s…it’s very touching and rewarding.
I just want to say thank you. It’s been a huge adventure already and we are only halfway through the duration. You guys made it a success.
One of the cool things we are doing is trying to make it so that everyone who ordered a print copy will get a beautiful hardback edition, instead of softback. We’re only about $900 from that stretch goal. We are trying to make so that we ONLY offer things that add value to the book, that make it better for everyone who pledged. It’s tricky, but so far, I think we’re doing pretty good.
Just want to say thank you again to everyone. We hope to have some fun community stuff up soon, just to say thank you. Will let everyone know when that happens!
THANK YOU!
