Howdy, Ms. Simone! I'll be heading to my first ever convention soon (MegaCon! TY for visiting FL!) and I already feel lost--especially as a strapped-for-cash student. How do autographs and photos work w/you fine folks from the comics industry (should I "ac

Hey, Jay.

Okay, I never charge for autographs or photos. Most pros do not charge for such things, but there are some…some of the Golden Age artists and writers, that’s how they make their money at these events. Others, like Neal Adams, I think he charges, to keep the lines down. But generally, comics people don’t charge for signings.

You can always ask. But if they charge, they will have a sign saying so.

Sketches are different…usually, a quick sketch from an artist at the DC or Marvel booth will be free, but they are really quick sketches, as a rule. Most artists make their con bills by charging for sketches so always ask first if you don’t see a sign.

You are always welcome to say hello to artists and writers, whether you are big fans of them or not. They are people, meaning that most will be great to talk to, but a few may not, don’t let that discourage you.

The general rule is to simply be polite. If you like a pro’s work, let them know, they will appreciate it. If they are willing to do a sketch for free, be sure and thank them, if you would.

One con no-no that really hurts artists’ feelings is if you tell them you love their work, you get a sketch, and then you immediately sell it on Ebay. They DO remember doing your sketch, probably, and if they took the time to do this nice thing, it’s very upsetting for them to see it on Ebay a day later. Many artists have quit doing free sketches for that reason. So, that’s a no-no.

Just be polite, have a great time, and ask if you are unsure about charges. I have a strict, no-charge-for-autographs policy and no limit on the number of books I will sign (sometimes the con imposes a limit if the lines are long). But just ask if you are unsure.

Have fun!

Hi. Whenever you can, I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on Scott Lobdell's recent characterization of Lois Lane in SUPERMAN #13 in which her TV news producing is described as follows: "The lead story was a transcript of the White House daily

I haven’t read it yet, I’m behind.

But I do have to say, I don’t really like to criticize other writers’ work that much, anyway.   I just don’t get the point of it…if someone likes that work, and I criticize it, all I’m doing is ruining it for them. If they hate that work, and I criticize it, what good is that doing anyone?

I get a lot of letters asking me for my opinion on one comic or another and it always feels like a leading question. I’d rather focus on the positive stuff, really.

Kick Ass DC Woman Tourney: Sweet 16, Match 2

dcwomenkickingass:

Yesterday’s match of Batwoman vs. Poison Ivy was won by Batwoman!

In today’s match we have a woman who looks for answers versus a woman who beat the truth out of you.

In this corner a woman who has a lot of strength and attitude. Oh, and really big boobs.

Power Girl!

And in the other corner a woman who asks a lot of questions, like, “why aren’t I in comics right now?” “Maggie Sawyer???”

You can vote in this match here!

It’s weird how painful these choices are.

The Loneliest Whale in the World.

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

Just imagine that massive mammal, floating alone and singing—too big to connect with any of the beings it passes, feeling paradoxically small in the vast stretches of empty, open ocean.

“A cryptozoologist has suggested that the 52-Hertz whale could even be lonelier than we realize, a hybrid between two different species of whale, or the last survivor of an unidentified species, plying the oceans in a doomed search for another of its kind, singing its broken song.”

I thought I was lonely.

That is one of the saddest articles I have ever read in my life.

Yep, my heart just cracked in two.

I met my husband when I was very young, and a horrible thing had happened on the beach in the town where we lived.

14 whales had inexplicably beached themselves on the shore and refused to go back in the water. We tried pouring sea water on them, we tried pushing them back in the water, we tried everything. In the end, they all died right there in front of us.

Until reading THIS, I thought that was the saddest story I’d ever heard about whales.

Adorable piece by the great Cassandra James!
