Howdy, Ms. Simone! I'll be heading to my first ever convention soon (MegaCon! TY for visiting FL!) and I already feel lost--especially as a strapped-for-cash student. How do autographs and photos work w/you fine folks from the comics industry (should I "ac

Hey, Jay.

Okay, I never charge for autographs or photos. Most pros do not charge for such things, but there are some…some of the Golden Age artists and writers, that’s how they make their money at these events. Others, like Neal Adams, I think he charges, to keep the lines down. But generally, comics people don’t charge for signings.

You can always ask. But if they charge, they will have a sign saying so.

Sketches are different…usually, a quick sketch from an artist at the DC or Marvel booth will be free, but they are really quick sketches, as a rule. Most artists make their con bills by charging for sketches so always ask first if you don’t see a sign.

You are always welcome to say hello to artists and writers, whether you are big fans of them or not. They are people, meaning that most will be great to talk to, but a few may not, don’t let that discourage you.

The general rule is to simply be polite. If you like a pro’s work, let them know, they will appreciate it. If they are willing to do a sketch for free, be sure and thank them, if you would.

One con no-no that really hurts artists’ feelings is if you tell them you love their work, you get a sketch, and then you immediately sell it on Ebay. They DO remember doing your sketch, probably, and if they took the time to do this nice thing, it’s very upsetting for them to see it on Ebay a day later. Many artists have quit doing free sketches for that reason. So, that’s a no-no.

Just be polite, have a great time, and ask if you are unsure about charges. I have a strict, no-charge-for-autographs policy and no limit on the number of books I will sign (sometimes the con imposes a limit if the lines are long). But just ask if you are unsure.

Have fun!
