I love this elephant so much I’m promising right here and now to never make her into four umbrella stands.
I know, I know I keep saying it, but Sandi is the best, you guys.
(I also kinda want to know just where Alex got that number from…)
[Agent X #03]
Sandi, Sagura, Outlaw and Mary Zero were the first female characters I got to add to an established comics universe.
I can’t tell you how happy that made me. And the readers loved them, but I think Outlaw is the only one who has really seen much use since.
It’s a shame, good potential there.

Hello, Ms. Simone! I notice that in most issues of Babs' ongoing the inside of her cape is colored purple. But then in every other comic she's appeared, it's yellow. Which brings me to my question: Is it meant to be purple OR yellow? Similarly, are her boo
It was meant to be purple originally on the inside of the cape, and it looked great in most shots, but editorial felt, I gather, that it muddied her profile a little in the scenes where the images are smaller. I think they liked the idea of some characters “owning” a color, Batwoman and Nightwing with the red and black, Batgirl with the black and yellow, et cetera. So they asked for it to be changed to solid yellow on the interior.
As for the high heels, that’s baffling. She never has them in her own book and shouldn’t have them elsewhere…I guess my thinking is, what girl has only one pair of shoes? ;)
Hi Ms. Simone! You've done so many phenomenal things for women in comics, bringing depth and diversity and all around bad-assery to lady superheroes. But what do YOU feel are your strengths as a writer? What do you think are your weaknesses as a writer? An
Oh, I’m sure LOTS of people have a LOT to say about that. ;)
I think my strengths as a writer are about empathy to some degree, I think I can put myself in the shoes of different characters to a serious degree, and I think that comes out in their interactions. People may not have the best definition for it, but I think people know a script of mine when they read it…or they know the difference in the way I write some key characters and the way they are written by others, for good or ill.
I think that’s nice. I feel like if my characters are speaking, in general, their dialogue feels like it belongs to them, and them only.
Whatever other strengths or weaknesses I might have, I leave to others. But I think even my detractors know that I care, and I think that shows.
I hope so, anyway. :)
Gail, I know you're booked for Brisbane and Melbourne Supanova shows but is there any chance of you returning to Australia and making an appearance in Sydney a little down the track? I'd love to meet you but my mid semester exams coincide with your visit!!
No plans for Sydney this year, but aside from Perth, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, there MAY be another appearance down under…can’t say when yet, but soon!

My goal for this year was to become a better person, as I have not been such a good person in previous years. To that end I educated myself on feminism and the types of issues women face when portrayed in the media and cultural stigma and stuff like that.
The ‘white-knighting’ thing…I have to say, sometimes, we could all use a little Galahad in our lives. Sometimes, it’s nice to have an outsider express unhappiness at inequality that doesn’t directly affect them. Sometimes, it’s downright pleasant to get support, not from people just like you, but from people in the group where the inequality is coming from. To me, it’s hopeful. Some of the most supportive comments I have ever gotten in the face of really angry misogyny has come from guy readers and colleagues.
I think the problem (and I know some people disagree with me) comes when someone not in the group being directly affected makes the discussion all about them. It’s one thing to stand up for others, and for something you believe, it’s another to dominate the conversation and make it all about you, your feelings, your knowledge. Don’t make your support feel like a grab for attention, is my advice.
I know every group has a different struggle, I’m really only talking about my own experience here. I have friends in the industry who PROFESS to be female-friendly and then I have friends in the industry whose actions and words actually SHOW them to be female-friendly. There is a difference.
Tumblr has been really helpful in teaching me to listen. If you start with the knowledge that you don’t know everything, and empathy is not the same as experience, I think you are definitely on a better path than the person who is out there for back-pats and attention.
I hope that makes sense. Again, this is just my experience.
