Hey Miss Simone, I'm planning on writing a series of fantasy books, and in the world they're set in, while definitely a parallel to our world in a lot of ways both geographically and socially, does has some differences. One of them is that women are treat

The only “laziness” would be if you didn’t take the time to fully realize that world and show how a more gender-equitable society might affect your setting and characters.

Otherwise, it’s your sandbox, build the castle you like!

Momma Simone! Two questions if you would be so kind; will you ever be writin' my glorious mercenary adventures again, 'cause I'd love to see that (Rhino might still be a little bitter, though). Secondly, and lastly, are you going to be at C2E2 in April? 'C

HA!

I hope so. I have given it a lot of thought over the past year or so, and the idea of writing you again seems like huge fun.

But Gerry and Brian are killing it right now!

I won’t be at c2e2 this year, sorry!

Hey Gail! Huge fan of your work here since your first issue of Birds. First off, as a queer feminist, I want to thank you for your thoughtful stories, well-crafted characters and use of your voice to work for equality both on and off the comics page. Ha

This is a very thoughtful question and thank you for your kind words!

The books I am really proud of that are a little less talked about are probably Gen13 and Welcome to Tranquility.

I think Gen13 is some of the best stuff I’ve written in superhero comics, it’s some very meaningful stuff to me personally, about how easily kids are marginalized and discarded. How they are seen as powerless when untethered to an adult. And how society so quickly wants to exploit them in various ways.

Welcome to Tranquility is one of my favorite projects, a book about a retirement town of superheroes and villains. I love it, it’s very complex story telling.

REALLY hidden gems are things like Rose and Thorn, a book about the effects of Unattached Child Syndrome on young people (I think that book has been swiped from a lot, never properly credited) and my short but fun LEGION arc, that I had a blast doing.

Hope that helps!

Ms. Simone, I will be at EEC this weekend- would it be strange if I asked you to review my art portfolio? This would be the first time I would be going to a con and having something to show. If not, can you recommend any artists who would give good advice

I am happy to look at your portfolio, I just ask two things;

1) It might be best to wait until it’s slow at my table. I get pretty swamped at SDCC, so you might want to look for a time when I am not busy so I can give you the proper attention.

2) Keep in mind that I am NOT an artist at all, the perspective I would give you is what writers look for in artists. And please try to have some sequential pages if you are looking for doing that kind of work in comics, okay?

Good luck!

Hi! I just wanted to say that it was wonderful to meet you at Portland Comic Con and how honored I am to show up in the profile picture on your twitter! (I'm the one dressed as Black Widow)

You guys looked amazing. I immediately wanted to write a Batgirl/Nightwing Girl/Black Widow crossover!

So nice to meet you, sorry I had to rush off!

Several People Have Asked Here...

…what my rules are about signings at conventions.

I don’t really have any.

I am happy to sign as many books as you bring. If you bring 100 books, I will sign them. I may do them in shifts so people don’t have to wait in line, but I will happily sign them for you.

Second, I do not charge for signatures, so please don’t worry about that.

Third, I am bringing the convention exclusive Leaving Megalopolis shirts and some comics, because people do ask that I have stuff for them to buy if they want. It is absolutely NOT required in any way, shape or form, I am delighted just to see you and will happily sign your book from home, program, whatever you have handy. We just have them because I get requests all the time and I can’t bring merch to most of the shows I attend, since I usually have to fly there.

Just stop and say hi!  Saturday is pretty packed, I may be away from my table a lot, but I will be there when I can. Friday and Sunday I will be at my table more.

Please come say hello, it’s a delight to get to meet readers! For some reason, Emerald City is one of my busiest appearances and I do tend to get slammed, but I sign quickly so the lines should move briskly.

Meet ya there!
