Hi Gail! I was wondering, will you be at Gold Coast Supanova Saturday and Sunday? I look forward to meeting you (:

I will indeed be there both days—the schedule is completely decided by the convention, but I think I am signing all day both days except for lunch and a couple panels, so yes, come say hello!

I should also have some Red Sonja mini-prints with art by Nicola Scott to give away, they are awesome!

This May Be Slightly Bad Backstage Etiquette...

…but Alex Kingston, aka River Song, coming into the hotel lobby in her comfy jammies with Ugg boots in the morning is about the most adorable human I have ever seen.

Being a big River Song fan, I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to have spoken with her several times and to have found out how kind, generous and caring she is. She has nothing but positive things to say about the huge mass of fans waiting to see her each day, and never seems to betray a single graceless moment.

Really a very special person. Speaking with her about Dinah Lance was really joyful…she shared a couple little things about how she saw the character that so perfectly tied in with my vision of Dinah’s mum that I was a bit stunned.

It’s nice…lots of actors at these events are sort of somewhat diva-esque, even some comic book creators have that vibe. It’s nice that someone whose work and characters I admire is so approachable and thoughtful to others.

Gold Coast

I am at the Gold Coast in Australia.  I’m told it’s a bit like Orlando, in the states…lots of theme parks and small touristy businesses.

I find the architecture here fascinating, every hotel is trying to outdo the rest with its interesting, whimsical design. The hotel the convention put us in is beautiful, little private veranda overlooking the city and a lake, it’s lovely.

The convention starts for me tomorrow with a VIP cocktail meet and greet thing, something pretty common in Australia I have found, still pretty rare in the states.

Then it’s the actual con on the weekend. The reception in Perth and Melbourne were so warm and welcoming that it was almost overwhelming. Looking forward to meeting readers here. I’m told that this con is bigger than the Melbourne Supanova, should be exciting.

We only have a day and a half free on the Gold Coast, and haven’t decided what to do for fun on those days off. Any suggestions?

They have a list of the top ten Simone stories as chosen by Comics Should Be Good. It’s a fun list, I’m happy to see most of the choices on there.

Do you agree with their…

You’re super sweet. :)

I would have put my Gen 13 volumes on there, somewhere, I am very proud of those!

Will we get to see Alysia's origin in a future issue of Batgirl?

She was bitten by a radioactive roommate!

comiccharm:

So this past weekend was Melbourne Supanova, and wow it was a freaking amazing weekend.  I can easily say, hands-down the best Convention experience I’ve had as a trader.
I met so many wonderful people and everyone was so sweet and supportive, I even had people from Tumblr coming up to me and saying how they were excited about me being at the show because they were a fan of my work.  I have fans!  (A mind-blowing concept for me…!)

Over the weekend I was offering my usual commission sketches, and they kept me flat-out.  I barely had a second to leave my booth and wow I got some great requests.  I got to draw all of my favourite DC comics ladies as well as some My Little Ponies and a Sonic the Hedgehog.

In the few minutes I did have to myself I stopped by Gail Simone, Nicola Scott and Terry and Rachel Dodson’s booth.  As soon as I saw this print Terry did for his Australian trip I knew I wanted one:

I’ve also wanted Nicola’s Secret Six x Wizard of Oz cross-over print since forever so I had to get me one of those.  Gail was also handing out signed Red Sonja post cards.

While I was waiting at Terry’s booth Dave Gibbons was talking to me and he said he saw my Red Sonja picture and loved it.  I nearly diiiiiiiiiiiied!  Dave Gibbons likes my work!  He laughed and said he wasn’t just saying that because he was standing next to me.
Terry Dodson also signed my Wonder Woman trade and doodled a little Wondy in it for me:

A short time later Terry was also kind enough to stop by my booth and took a look through my portfolio.

I cannot thank everyone enough for making it such an amazing weekend, Rowan and I both had so much fun.  I also got an invite for a Free Comic Book Day event coming up in May I’ll share details of when I can.  So exciting!

Cassandra is one of my favorite new artists…she’s gonna be big!

If only we knew, Diana.

I still get this all the time.

If the focus is off of dudes for even a moment, it’s because I hate men.

Which I don’t, I think guys are swell.

It’s weird.

If you’ve ever seen a protest of a Warren Farrell talk or any MRM group you will see that feminists hate it when the focus is on men for a second. Of course feminism isn’t the same as gender equality, but I guess many people think it is. I’ve heard, at these protests, feminists say “why do men need a ‘mens space’?” In the context that men should go to feminist spaces instead of MRM spaces. So it’s not that gender equality=misandry, it’s that the way feminism goes about gender equality is usually at the expense of men.

Hahaha, good one!

Oh, wait. You’re serious with this?

Hi Gail, I'm a big fan of your work and so happy that you bring feminist/LGBT consciousness to comics. But I was troubled by Alysia's reveal for several reasons. Most importantly, I felt like her story was dropped into the comic in a way that paralleled he

Hmm.

Well, first, spoilers, although I think most people are aware at this point.

Well, in this case, I think the fact that that one page is being reprinted over and over makes it sort of difficult to see in context, which is that Alysia has been trying to tell Barbara this thing almost since the beginning.

It’s not anyone’s fault, but if we’re only talking about those few panels, we miss that this isn’t Alysia’s first attempt to convey this information to Barbara.

I think you raise an interesting point, but in context, it seems to me to be two women opening up and sharing their souls a little bit, which is pretty common in my experience when you have someone you trust. It’s rarely ‘parallel,’ and I’m not 100% why they would be ‘automatically equal experiences.’ There’s nothing in the text to imply that.

I will say that I didn’t want to have Alysia’s revelation come at the same time as Barbara revealing she is Batgirl, as that, metaphorically, would pretty clearly imply things about ‘secret identities’ that could be pretty insensitive and tasteless.

In context, the story goes…Alysia tries several times to tell Barbara, but there’s always a rush or an emergency or an interruption of some kind. When they are attacked and Alysia is put in danger, she STILL offers to go with Barbara no matter what danger Barbara is in.

Barbara hasn’t had a non-costumed friend like that at this point in her life. So she tells Alysia as much as she can about her life except for the one thing she holds back (that she’s Batgirl), she THINKS to protect her roomie. Alysia, who has been trying to tell Barbara all along, opens up herself.

I think most people have had a night like that. I don’t think it was ‘dropped into the comic,’ unless you have only read those two pages. Alysia’s talked about wanting to tell Barbara something important for months now.

Hope that makes sense.
