Teases about Katharsis, Mouse and Virtue, in back-to-back posts? YOU'RE KILLING ME, MS. GAIL.

I would never tease anyone, that’s mean.

EXCEPT ALL THE TIME.

I picked up The Movement today and love it. I’m a Marvel guy though… Any suggestions on what to read to get more background on the characters or the city?

Yay! Thanks! Marvel is putting out some great books right now.

As for seeing the characters in the past, this is pretty much ground zero, it’s the first appearance of most of them, and the city’s first appearance is this issue.

The only two characters to have appeared at all are Katharsis, who has a couple appearances in the recent Batgirl issues, and the other is Tremor, who appeared a bit before the new52, but just in a couple issues (and this is a new version, a younger and less experienced version).

So really, you know as much as anyone, pretty much!  :)

Gail, which series do you think will be more fun to write, The Movement or Red Sonja?

HA! This is a tricky question.

“Fun to write” usually has more to do with the environment I am writing in than the actual book’s content. If I am writing a book, I generally find something to love about the characters, and once I love the characters, writing them makes me happy. There are VERY few books I have written that I do not miss once I have quit writing them. I still miss Deadpool, I still miss the Killer Princesses.

However, other factors can raise or lower the fun factor—if the artist is not a great match, how the editors handle the book, that sort of thing, all of that factors in. The difference between two assignments may be simply the editorial approach, that can really be a huge factor.

In both Red Sonja and the Movement, I am BLESSED with editors who trust me and let me write what I want, the way I know the stories should be told. I believe it is resulting in outrageously entertaining stories. That’s what makes me happiest.

If I break it down…I love writing team books, point to Movement. But I adore writing in a whole new genre, point goes to Red Sonja.

I don’t know, but writing both makes me SERIOUSLY happy.

Sorry, that’s a crap answer, but it’s true, I love both a lot.

I have no trans friends (that I know of), and very few gay ones. Not by choice, just how things worked out. How would I go about writing an inclusive cast of characters with so little personal experience?

Sigh.

I believe these letters mean well. I believe the authors are trying to learn something they know is lacking in their work and their worldview.

But holy Pete, again, why do people ask a non-lgbtq person, on a social media with untold thousands upon thousands of ACTUAL lgbtq writers blogging every single day, how to write honestly of the lgbtq experience?

You are ON quite possibly the best resource for reading about lgbtq people that has ever existed. There are endless writers talking about this topic with authority, intelligence and experience.

It’s like trying to get sand in a desert by putting your face in a water fountain. The information is all around you.

I don’t have magic insight or special perception or some mythical well of empathy. The only way I know any of this experience is because I am trying to listen to the voices that are easily found right here on Tumblr, and on various websites all over the internet.

I’ve even had pro friends ask me similar questions. I don’t get it.

You don’t have to be related to or be friends with gay or trans people, they are all over Tumblr writing about their lives every day. Many (but not all, and that’s fine) are delighted to have a dialogue about how to portray lgbtq people better.

I appreciate the thought, but thinking of me as an authority on this subject is missing the point entirely.

The only help I CAN give (aside from recommending that you make use of this very social network) is general writerly advice that is applicable to all types of humanity that you are not directly familiar with…which is, write them as human beings, first. That advice applies to pretty much every character, really.

I grew up on a farm in the boonies of Oregon, miles and miles from the nearest town, no television, no neighbors, and the nearest town had exactly one stoplight. Lack of personal experience is not an excuse to only write characters like yourself.

Seriously, if I seem like I know what I am talking about on these topics, it is 100% because I pay attention to people who ACTUALLY know what they are talking about, not through magic or osmosis.

femmebotnoir:

I might have the chance to Gail Simone and I don’t know if I’m sobbing or unable to breath because I’m excited/nervous. Mainly nervous because it’s a big comic book store with lots of people so I might be disappointed.

But hey! For FCBD I’ll be out in Annapolis at Third Eye Comics because Gail…

Sweetheart, you be sure to let me know that you are Femmebot Noir from Tumblr when you come so I know it’s you (there may be multiple Black Canary cosplayers, as is often the case), and DO NOT BE NERVOUS, it’s going to be a ton of fun.

I will be absolutely delighted to meet you and happy to sign as many books as you care to bring. I want to see your BC outfit!

:)

Saturday is just a few days away, yep!
