Free Comic Book Day Is My Favorite Day

I dearly love it, I look forward to this day all year. It’s this Saturday!

Just one quick thought.

I know I say this every year, but a lot of people believe that the comics the comic shops give away are given free to retailers.

They are not. Retailers have to pay for the books. They pay a reduced fee, but they still pay for them. They also have to pay shipping. They have to pay for ads and they have to usually pay for extra employees, and many shops pay to have guests or other special events. It can end up being a huge expense, and even though a lot of new readers might come by, part of it is also a celebration of comics, and a lovely little bonus for the shop’s loyal customers.

It’s a great deal of effort, as well, in most cases.

What I would ask everyone to do is, when you go to get your free comics, please take a little bit of extra time, even if it’s crowded, to shop in the store. Try a couple new comics off the rack or a new trade collection you have been thinking about. Maybe if you buy Magic cards or game supplies somewhere else, usually, think about buying some at the hosting store while you are there. It will add up and make their Free Comic Book Day much more successful and everyone will be happy, and it’s a nice way to say thank you.

Just a thought, but when picking up your free comics, please send a little bit of shopping love to the store that is putting on the event for you. Do it ON Free Comic Book Day so that they know the day is a success and that all their expense and effort is appreciated.

Your comic store will love you and I will love you!

Not ALL the stories did these things, mind you…but enough did that it got a little weird…

1) Lots of bloggers don’t know the difference between transgender and transvestite.

2) Lots of bloggers and journalists don’t know the difference between Batwoman and Batgirl.

3) Once you say something is…

‘4) Right wing bloggers seem to think the very mention of marginalized people is a deliberate assault on them, personally.’

I wouldn’t refer to bigoted assholes like them as ‘journalists’ myself…the stuff written on the back of a sugar packet has got more worth than the garbage that those pathetic, brainless cretins scribble out

It’s fucking infuriating. The implication is that, with tremendous effort, they MAY be able to tolerate a character who is trans, or bi, or Asian.

BUT GOD HELP THE WORLD if they have to actually have to imagine a character who is TWO things apart from white, hetero, cis and male! The only POSSIBLE explanation is that it’s filling out some mythical goddamn checklist.

It is to fucking puke.

It blows my mind that people get SO FUCKING UPSET when confronted with any character that isn’t some cishet white male. As if, yeah, as if it’s a deliberate, personal assault. It’s so sickening.

I’ve heard the ‘checklist’ thing many times. I don’t know what world these hideous people live in, but I wish to God it wasn’t this one.

Sorry for the cursing, getting angry just thinking about it.

Hey! I love all your work, just saying. But I have a question to ask you! Not sure if this has been asked, but I was wondering if you have been offered or if you want to go on Kevin Smiths podcast "Fat Man on Batman" I am not sure if you are familiar wit

I have…I really enjoy the show, and Kevin was lovely, he said, “Gail, how about coming on the show and helping us make it not such a sausage fest?” which made me laugh.

I’ve met Kevin a couple times, he was never anything but charming and gracious. I will probably be on the show once my schedule calms down a little, it’s kind of over-the-top right now.

Little girl said to have inappropriate clothing

A Henry County woman is furious after being called out for sending her six-year-old kindergartener to school in what officials say was inappropriate.

Audrey Hightower tells Channel 2 Action News an assistant principal from Tussahaw Elementary called her on Tuesday complaining of her daughter’s Little Kitty dress saying it was too short or may be showing too much skin.

I don’t see anything inappropriate. It’s just ridiculous.

white people have a sickness

…………

i can’t…

And they wonder why we don’t like them.

Also, this baby looks fine. Completely appropriate for a child her age. She has on tights, for Christ’s sake. The skin they apparently see too much of is her hands and her face. Jesus.

Everybody woulda got cussed the hell out. EVERYBODY.

That child’s outfit is just fine.

And folks wonder why we get angry…

My guess is these ridiculous school people are jealous because they will live their entire lives without ever being one tenth as goddamn fabulous as this little girl is in this picture.

1) Lots of bloggers don’t know the difference between transgender and transvestite.

2) Lots of bloggers and journalists don’t know the difference between Batwoman and Batgirl.

3) Once you say something is the “first…” of anything, that becomes the story entirely, nothing else matters (that one was our fault, but still annoying).

4) Right wing bloggers seem to think the very mention of marginalized people is a deliberate assault on them, personally.

5) Some journalists think every character in a comic is automatically a superhero.

6) There are people who actually think having a character be trans AND Asian is somehow playing “minority bingo.” Actually saw several sites say something like that. Yep. 2013. Because, as we all know, characters can’t be TWO things!

Sheesh.

Some of the articles were absolutely lovely. But some make me never want to read blogs about comics written by non-comics people ever again. YIKES.
