OMG your response to that ask about being "politically correct" was so perfect! Would you mind if I reblogged it?
Please feel free.
If I wanted to join DC Comics or Marvel in being a writer or assistant etc, do i just contact them?
No. They don’t take unsolicited resumes or applications.
There are lots of articles about this, I have written several myself, you just need to do a little research.
Ok let's say DC wants you to make up a character, do you make a street level heroes more or the superman type ?
My tendency is closer to the street level characters. But I have a few of the others, like Black Alice.
How does that work? Do you at least get to advise or collaborate and check with that book's writer to ensure it fits?
It varies from editor to editor. Some encourage collaboration between creators and some don’t.
Optimally, the writers communicate and make things line up, but that doesn’t always happen.
Hey, how come you arent writing the Batman Year Zero tie-in issue of Batgirl? I hope it flows with your #0 issue!
Me, too.
I would have liked to have written it.
I love your writing but do you ever get tired of being so politically correct just for the sake of being politically correct?
No, I think the term ‘politically correct’ is mostly bullshit.
People think having to consider other people at all, in any regard other than contempt, is being ‘politically correct.’
I write a LOT of stuff that doesn’t fit that banner, anyway.
Have to ever written anything you've regretted?
Yeah, a few things.
I regret the lack of diversity in my first Birds of Prey run. I tried to include some lgbt characters and poc characters, but for one reason or another, they didn’t stay with the team or were being used elsewhere or were fairly small in their roles, such as Savant and Creote.
I also regret that my love of China and in particular martial arts culture manifested itself in way too many Asian characters being martial arts archetypes, particularly females, especially earlier in my career. I didn’t know the word ‘exoticism’ existed until some Asian readers pointed out that I was actually GUILTY of it. I love love love martial arts culture from all over the world, I love street fighting badassery, so I’m glad those characters exist but I made a rule never to create any more Asian martial arts-themed characters until there are lots more prominent characters who have a wider diversity of motive and method.
And finally, I regret having Creote fake his own suicide in BOP. That trope is clearly a painful one in the lgbtq community and I could have found a different way to tell the same story.
Those are the big ones for me that spring to mind.
Oh, and I regret the way FIRESTORM turned out, that should have been a great book, it has flashes of good stuff, but it just had way, WAY too many cooks in the kitchen and it didn’t come together and that makes me feel guilty whenever I talk to Firestorm fans.
