Gail Simone on Convergence: Nightwing and Oracle: “A Good, Rollicking Time”

dcwomenkickingass:

DC Comics Convergence event has seen the return of several popular characters that were “benched” by the new 52 such as Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya. One of the most prominent characters that disappeared in main continuity was Barbara Gordon in her Oracle incarnation. But Oracle is back along with a pre-52 Dick Grayson as Finger Striped Nightwing for Convergence, DC’s two month event.

Not only is Oracle back, the woman who wrote her in two volumes of Birds of Prey is back writing her, Gail Simone. I chatted with Gail about her return to the character, her thoughts about Barbara and what we can expect from Convergence.

Huzzah!

This is fresh from Dynamite, everyone has been asking for a checklist and finally it’s here, I only saw it myself for the first time a couple minutes ago. :)

These are all the issues of SWORDS OF SORROW, which is a six issue huge event epic featuring adventure heroines from radio, comics, comic strips, literature, horror magazines and more. No other company has the library of characters to make this happen.

I am writing the main book, and all the tie-ins are written by my favorite of today’s adventure comics writers, all of whom are female as a bonus!

All the companion books are a blast in their own right, and they are written by people like G. Willow Willson and Erica Schultz (Kato Vs. Masquerade), Marguerite Bennett (Red Sonja Vs. Jungle Girl) and more, but I don’t want to give ALL the surprises away. :)

The art is by a bunch of amazing people, the main book is drawn by Sergio Davila, who has been killing it on LEGENDERRY. The covers are mostly done by female artists, like Jenny Frison and Tula Lotay.

And there’s a fantastic Kate Leth VALKYRIE exclusive cover that you can order if your store is Valkyrie-affiliated.

I am happy, this is a BLAST. We did it so that no more than one issue comes out per week so you don’t have your wallets explode.  I can’t wait for you to read what these ladies came up with!

ECCC brought a lot of tears this time.

One of the very first people in line on the first day was a lovely person who identified as a Singaporean trans person (they did not specify pronouns so I won’t either) and they could not have been more lovely and kind. They talked about how much it meant seeing a Singaporean trans woman in a mainstream bat book, and I got the sense that they were very shy and it took a lot to have this conversation.

It meant a lot to me, and I kept it together perfectly well until I had to use the bathroom a little later and had a moment to reflect. Then I cried like a baby.

And I am not at all embarrassed!

Well, a little embarrassed. :)

Thank you to that lovely person in line, your words really touched me, and Alysia would be proud of you, I know it.

It’s Transgender Day Of Visibility

I know there are a lot of hardships and deliberate misunderstandings out there, and a long ways to go for acceptance of trans issues.

But I am incredibly thankful for the trans people in my life. Bless you forever for being so kind and brilliant and wonderful.

CA: Do you see a difference in writing Barbara as Batgirl and writing her as Oracle?

CA: Do you see a difference in writing Barbara as Batgirl and writing her as Oracle?

GS: I have talked about this a lot, but I am very inspired by the ideas of a real timeline…if you are a Conan fan, you can read stories of Conan when he was very young, all the way up to when he was an old king. If you love Tarzan, you can read stories from the Jungle Tales of Tarzan, where he’s just a kid, all the way up until he has a son of his own and beyond. Same with Batman, you can follow him from Gotham, as a kid, to Dark Knight, as a cranky old weirdo. I really love that.

So my thinking on Barbara is always about that, it’s a timeline. And for the canon in my head, I see the current run as very early in her career, all the way up to when she becomes Oracle. Same character, one life lived, but stories told at all different points of the timeline. Her experience and methods change, but the steel is the same from cradle to grave, basically.

There’s always a feeling of, “Oh, man, what if I blow it,” on every assignment, but this one is special and I did cry a couple times writing it, hopefully it will be okay. I found it really touching to work on

Perhaps I've missed it, but I noticed my issue of Tomb Raider today didn't have your name on it. Did you finish your run?

I did! The amazing RHIANNA PRATCHETT, writer of the actual TOMB RAIDER game, is taking over and it’s amazing!
