Is it possible you'll return to write the Birds Of Prey someday?
I have thought about it, because I love Bop and feel that the industry is poorer without that book. But I would want it to be new characters, none of the key characters are the same anymore, they wouldn’t fit together well. It needs a new concept.
It probably needs a new creative team, as well. I would love to see the Lumberjanes team do the book and start from scratch!

I am not a celebrity.
Even if I WERE a celebrity, I would not want to be a celebrity. :)
There are people in comics who are great at self-promotion and always making themselves be seen in the best possible light. You’d be surprised, some of the people in the industry who present themselves as rebels and mavericks are actually stunningly good at marketing themselves, and that’s the image that they feel projects the best. It doesn’t mean they are untalented or undeserving at all. To the contrary, I admire that ability quite a lot. If someone is in the news a LOT, odds are they know exactly how to make that happen.
I genuinely, sincerely mean this as a compliment. I have wild respect for people who are able to turn on that glamor (in the old sense of the word) like that, and it’s not at all the people you would expect. Some of the people manage to cultivate this image while still presenting themselves as above self-promotion, which is a nifty trick, really.
My own self-promotion tends to be a bit awkward, but hopefully sincere. I don’t like doing interviews, I don’t really like public speaking, I don’t crave any of that stuff. I get asked to do endless interviews and I do many as a favor to one person or another, but it’s always a bit difficult for me, being shy (which I am, my twitter presence to the contrary).
A few years ago, I discovered the way to get through it. If I am talking about the work, I do all right, because that’s what I believe in and care about. If I talk about the work, and other people, like my artists or editors, I can do it. But it’s never something I seek out. If I get to promote other creators I like, or artists, those are things where I can express a lot of enthusiasm and joy and it reads well. If the interview is about my personal achievements or whatever (and they often are, most interviewers mean only good things, and many are avid readers), then I stumble a lot, even when I am answering the questions alone in a room.
As for the other stuff, media exposure, it’s not something I seek, it’s always something that I am asked to do. It’s definitely a part of the job at this point, with a very few exceptions. But I will never be that person who enjoys that aspect.
The things I like are things like getting to meet readers, getting to sit in on awesome panels and hear other people speak, and sometimes I admit it’s fun to get some perk, like cool sneak previews or cool merch from various sources. The travel, I love, I love meeting readers in different countries.
I think being a celebrity in most cases entails active participation and desire on behalf of the person involved, and I am usually a little suspicious of that, that is not a trait I seem to have.
ALSO, it has to be said that comic book celebrity, again with a few exceptions, is a little silly, most people wouldn’t have a clue what you do even if you told them. But if I am going to be ‘famous,’ I like this kind of fame, where you are well known in a convention hall one weekend a year, but then you go home and shop at the grocery store and not a single person has a clue who you are. That, I can live with.
I’ve been shy most of my life, I took drama to grow out of it and it helped somewhat. But it will never be my forte, there will always be people a thousand times better at that than I, and I am fine with that. :)
It’s gotten a little weirder with getting recognized now. I get recognized almost every city I visit, whether a con is going or not, and even in my small town I get recognized now. It’s always a weird feeling, I doubt I will ever get used to that.

Okay, the preview of issue four is out, and it has a pretty big reveal about Porcelain. Which makes me happy. And we’re already getting a lot of feedback about it, wonderfully.
So I wanted to thank you folks here. A while ago, when I was doing research for Porcelain (I am being careful with the wording here only because people might be reading this without seeing the spoiler note), I asked everyone who might identify similarly to chime in, and a bunch of folks were absolutely wonderful and generous and that helped make Porcelain feel a million times more real, I think. Once again, THANK YOU.
We will talk about this more soon, and yep, the book WILL have the pronoun discussion. :)
