For that time I was having a rough morning but gailsimone was discussing Wolverine’s pubes on Twitter and tweeted “Pubearine” at me (yes, I screenshot & saved the moment forever), completely changing the course of my day, and for countless other moments where she has made me laugh, inspired, and added so much to the world of comics and beyond, I wish Gail the happiest of birthdays and thank her for being so damn awesome.

So, it’s my birthday.Here’s the thing. When I started in comics, it almost didn’t...
So, it’s my birthday.
Here’s the thing. When I started in comics, it almost didn’t happen because I was so sure that there was no place for me as a writer in this industry. It’s not that people said anything like that, it’s just that I was a hairdresser, a woman, I lived in the boonies, I had no professional credits or experience, I had never been to a con, never met a publisher, and the whole idea seemed ridiculous. The first several times people offered me writing gigs, I turned them down, because I was sure it was a big mistake or hoax or something.
But I gave it a shot and loved it. There were always people who felt it was their duty to tell me I didn’t belong in comics, that comics were never going to be meant to appeal to women, people like that were always out there. They’re STILL out there.
But they were so ridiculously outnumbered, so completely overshadowed by the other people; the incredibly kind and gracious pros who welcomed and guided me, the retailers who supported and encouraged me, the publishers who took a chance on me, and the countless readers who inspired and amazed me.
Many times, when I’ve had a bad work day or am blue for some reason, some kind thing a pro or reader has said to me has lifted me up and put me right back on the right track. If I am a fighter, a big part of that is because of the kind support I have always been so damn fortunate to have.
It means a lot, you guys.
Waking up and seeing hundreds and hundreds of birthday wishes, many from people I have never met, many from pros I idolize to this day, and many from people it makes me smile to remember, is quite possibly the best gift of all.
I always say it, but it’s true. I don’t know what I did to deserve you but I’m NOT GIVING YOU BACK.
Thank you for the kind thoughts, the endless support, and for making me the luckiest writer in comics!

Is there any chance of us seeing Extraño ever again? He is a favorite character of mine who I think could be improved with a more modern interpretation.
That’s an interesting thought, I must admit the character has made me cringe just seeing some of the panels, out of context.
I don’t know, I don’t know enough about the character.

Why was hawkgirl never a long term me member of the birds of prey. Shayera was perfect for the team, beautiful bad ass bird themed and brimming with attitude. And she's a red head.
I THINK most of the time when I was writing Bop, she was either in the Hawkman book or they were rebooting Hawkman, so she wasn’t available. That’s my memory. But I stuck her in there when I could!
Have you ever wanted to take an existing character in a certain direction only to be told "No, that is not happening"?
I’m sure I have. Let me think.
OH! I wanted Deathstroke to be taken over by a new character, a woman, and that story was freaking BADASS. Honestly, it kills me that we didn’t do that, it was absolutely electric, that outline. It still featured Slade, but he was in a brutal position and you end up actually rooting for him.
I am trying to think of what else…I had a million things I wanted to do with Batgirl that they wouldn’t allow. I think, to be fair, they just didn’t know what to do with her in the new52 and were saying no to EVERYTHING.
I pitched for the INFERIOR FIVE, that was fun and a new direction.
I’m not mad about any of this stuff, this is the process of shared universes. You pitch something, not everyone loves it, you try something else.
