It got lost in the jumble of all the "final issues", but I just thought I'd say that - having reread Secret Six #36 yesterday - it really was one of the best of the bunch in terms of adding proper closure not just to the storyline, but to the DCU as a whol
Thank you! But I most definitely did NOT kill Dr. Light, no way!
She's not dead, I PROMISE.

Britsplosion!
I'm happy.
When I was in Seattle, I saw that Roger Daltrey is touring (with Simon Townshend, a phenomenal musician in his own right) doing the complete Tommy opera, and it was going to be at the Key Arena on Tuesday night, next week.
Unfortunately, our tickets to fly to London were also on Tuesday. So no go on seeing Tommy sung by one of my all-time favorite singers.
But aha! I looked at the website, and he's doing the same show on Monday, at the Rose Quarter, in Portland! Not only is it closer (PDX is where we are flying out of), it fits the schedule AND it was considerably cheaper. We are five rows back CENTER. THAT KICKS ASS. I can't wait!
Then, we board a plane in the morning for the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG flight to London. This is for MCM Expo, my first visit to England, where I've wanted to go all my life. I can't wait to meet all the readers there and see a bit of London. We're staying a few extra days—if you haven't suggested cool stuff to do yet, please do, I don't know London at all.
Hope to see some of you there!

As Kirby is to Marvel, Dan DeCarlo is to...
As Kirby is to Marvel, Dan DeCarlo is to Archie. He was the creator of Josie and the Pussycats, Sabrina the Teen Age Witch, and Cheryl Blossom. He defined the "look" of Archie comics for decades. Archie's mainline "house" style is still strongly influenced by DeCarlo. And the reason that you never hear any of this is because, as I say, DeCarlo is to Archie as Kirby is to Marvel. The divorce was bitter—there were lawsuits—and Archie Comics is even MORE militant about asserting that the company itself, and NOT the creators, are the actual authors of their work.
The thing about DeCarlo is that, like Kirby, there's just SO much stuff out there. The Best of Dan DeCarlo volumes in trade from Archie are really good and representative, as is the Best of Josie and the Pussycats, but my favorite place to start is actually the naughty stuff in The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo (2 volumes) and The Art of Dan DeCarlo.
Oh, and it almost goes without saying that without Dan DeCarlo, there would be no Hernandez Brothers and no Love and Rockets—at least, not as we know them.
This is a cool story, I'll just spin it briefly.
Bongo had a lot of great artists who could draw the Simpsons and who could tell a story, but they weren't as familiar with how to set up a gag, how to make a joke page pay off.
So they hired Dan DeCarlo to do layouts, to teach the new artists some tricks for telling Simpsons stories in comics form. Great idea, right?
But the problem was, Dan had never WATCHED the Simpsons. So he wasn't really familiar with it. So he drew the characters all like Archie characters in the classic DeCarlo style. If you watch the show, you know they aren't really shown as three-dimensional most of the time. Dan drew them in full 3-d, with classic DeCarlo/Archie figures, movement and layouts. It was absolutely creepy and wonderful at the same time. I have the pages around here somewhere.
The weird thing is, it really, really worked. Even with the Simpsons "off-model," he really told a great, clean story with beautiful lines and a laser eye for the gag. He was amazing. It made me so happy. He also complimented my scripts for the stories and the jokes, so I floated around for days. He was the first time I had a hero of mine draw a story I'd written. Sadly, he passed away soon after.
But it's a wonderful memory.

I drew this over lunch today. This is Jeannette of Gail Simone's late, lamented Secret Six. I've been looking at a lot of Betty and Veronica lately and it's seeping into my drawing. I'm thinking of putting Kirby crackle around her when I get home tonight. That way, I'll be mixing up De Carlo and Kirby and the Universe will explode from the awesomeness.
Pitt pen over pencil on crappy sketchbook paper.
That's completely adorable, thank you for doing this. A DeCarlo Jeannette is a dream.
I was one of the very last writers to work with the great Dan DeCarlo. It was absolutely a complete joy, the guy is just a hero of mine. His art is every bit as important to comics as some of the all-time great superhero names. I have a couple books of his work, including the book of pin-up cartoons that was written by the equally wonderful Bill Morrison.
I had just started writing comics and the were giving my scripts to Dan DeCarlo. That was a very mind-blowing experience.
