~Action Comics #827

Oh Gail Simone….why were you the most amazing writer for Superman???  I love this arc so freaking much!

Sigh.

Thank you.  I didn't know I was going to love writing Superman so much. I just had no idea. But writing Jimmy, and ESPECIALLY Lois and Clark, that was as close to pure fun as I've ever had writing comics.

Sales went way up, reviews were amazing, but we were just doing nine issues, sadly.  Dan has said he wants me back doing Super-stuff, so it's a matter of finding the right project that I really want to do.

What a joy. Sheesh, I just loved it. I didn't even know I loved Superman til that point, really.

Last SDCC, I was getting ready for a panel and Grant was a surprise guest, and he was backstage, and he suddenly yells out, in that wonderful accent, "GAIL!" and he's got this huge smile on his face. We've always been friends but I never got that reaction before from him, and he grabs me and gives me this huge hug.

I'm kind of surprised, Grant's a wonderful guy but I've never seen him do that before, and he says, "I just read your Action run, and IT WAS BRILLIANT!"

Then I was REALLY stunned, because All-Star Superman is pretty much my favorite thing ever.  But he sat me down and started telling me how much he loved that collection, that he'd never read it before, and how brilliant it was…he especially loved the Lois and Clark stuff.  I remember him saying, "You wrote their marriage the BEST."  And we sat and lamented the end of that marriage.

It was pretty special.  I'm not saying it to brag, just that it was very remarkable to me that GRANT would discover this short run and be so effusive.  It really meant a lot.

When you do these short runs on serial books, you put your heart in it, and you always have this feeling that it's transitory and will be quickly forgotten, and it can be very sad. I did a four issue Legion story I was very fond of, but because it was right before a relaunch, it's not been collected and probably never will be. I don't write stories for my ego, I write stories to be read, you know? So it's sad to have orphans out there.

And it's always a special delight when a story you think is now pretty much off the radar leaves a nice impression on someone.

Especially if it's the guy who wrote All-Star Superman.  ;)

Oh, Man

I got to write one of my very favorite and unfortunately obscure characters this week:  Kho Kharhi.

What a blast.

I can see why those GL dudes always seem to be enjoying themselves so much!

"Against dishonor and traitor's flight

I stand beside my clan to fight

With dying breath, I claw and bite

Beware my power, GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!"

There Might Be a Problem With Soul Calibur V

When I realized I like the clothes in the game better than the game itself.

The creator of Ghost Rider, who is destitute after creating a character who has made millions for its Publisher,…

This isn't the sort of thing the CBLDF would normally handle, I don't think. They are primarily first amendment guardians.

Hero Initiative MIGHT be more appropriate.

But whatever happens, I don't want Mr. Friedrich to have to pay this fee. If I have to start a fundraiser, I will.

Man, I Was Grouchy Yesterday

I was mad all day yesterday about this Gary Friedrich thing, and it made me grumpy. If I grumped at anyone, my apologies. The whole thing is really upsetting.

Still hoping Marvel does the right thing, here. I know they are capable of it, and I am certain they don't WANT to force the creator of Ghost Rider to pay money he can't afford, especially right before a major motion picture comes out featuring his character.

Make us proud, Marvel, please do the right thing and forgive this debt.

Gail. today I bought my comics in my local store and they told me they don't stock Batwoman or Batgirl because they don't sell. I was quite shocked because figures had showed that they sell quite well in previous months. I was wondering if you would hav

*************

Unfortunately, I have heard of this happening a few times, and it's just inexcusable. Batgirl and Batwoman have both been in the Top 25 for months now. The first issues of those books both went to third and fourth printings. Currently, they are outselling Hulk, Fantastic Four, and Captain America, just to name a few.

It IS possible that at some stores, female books don't sell as well, or DC books don't, or Marvel, or Indie, or whatever. I'm not calling them liars.

But it is BAD RETAILING not to stock a book that customers are requesting. There's no good excuse for it. And it's not being very aware of the market if you don't have shelf copies of books in the top 25.  That's just 6 books or so each week. We are in that group.

Seriously, I hope they take another look. Let them know you want copies. They can reorder them. Good luck!
