OHMYGOD GAIL SIMONE NEW BATGIRL ALYSIA YEOH SINGAPORE SINGAPORE

I've just read new 52!Batgirl #4 and I swear my heart just leapt. okay, so there was a mention of Singapore and laksa a couple of issues ago, because Alysia Yeoh— Barbara Gordon's new roommate—…

Hahahaha!

Speaking of food adventures in Singapore…every time we go, our hosts take us on amazing food adventures.  It's always lovely, chilli crab by the river, or Katong Laksa, you know, great stuff.

But this last time we went, the event was partially sponsored by the Singapore Tourism Board. Lovely people, and they kept taking us, and other comics peeps like Matt Fraction and C.B. Cebulski to these wonderful restaurants, very elegant places by some of Singapore's foodie elite. Every event had major food elements, over and over, we were getting really REALLY a bit food fatigued.

Finally, the newspaper, the Straits Times, right? They did a 'food tour,' with the Tourism board. They loaded up a bus with all the comics guests, and they took us on a food tour that took almost THE ENTIRE DAY.

Seriously, the idea was to take us to restaurant after restaurant, food stall after food stall, and film it, and do stories about it. I guess the idea was to film us in as many local landmarks as possible, foodwise.

It was endless. The food was amazing, but even eating two BITES of every one of those places was way, way too much. It was some of my favorite stuff, but by the end, we were doing our best to even look polite as we nibbled tiny little bites, every one of us was stuffed to the brim. But we wanted to be nice for our hosts who had set all this up, and for the restaurant owners who were being so gracious.

It was literally like, get some laksa at a Katong shop, eat two bites, get up, go to a Laksa shop across the street, do the same thing, back on the bus, go get white pepper crab, eat two bites, get up…this went on for HOURS, while being photographed the whole time. :)  It was one of those things…okay, we are going to serve you the world's best food, but we're going to serve it in a million locations over a whole day, and film you, until you can't even WALK straight!

The very last place was a place that made some sort of local egg desert.  It was upstairs in a food pavilion, and we were all barely able to walk we were so full and tired.  But the stall owner, who was famous for her deserts, had stayed open to wait for us (we arrived late).  The thought of egg deserts after hours and hours of food was just unbearable, but she was so sweet and had waited and made these special for us. What could we do?  We ate them, and they were delicious.

And then we all went back to our hotels and went into a food coma. I kid you not, I ate almost nothing for THREE FULL DAYS following!

Singapore likes to feed their guests, that's all I'm saying!  :)

It was memorable, I'll remember it forever, and it was a complete embarrassment of riches. Nicest people anywhere, honestly. But MAN ALIVE THAT WAS A LOT OF FOOD.

Well, this note makes me very, very happy indeed!

I am very glad that Alysia's backstory as a Singaporean made you happy. She's got a big role coming up, some things that I think are really surprising. Hope you like it!

And yes, I miss Singapore so bad I can barely stand it. :)

Dang.

This is going to sound weird, maybe, but I am a huge Monkees fan. I don't care about the Monkeemania or any of that stuff, I really like their music. I have all their albums and listen to them regularly. I discovered them during an MTV retrospective years after they had broken up and was fascinated by their voices.

They could have just been the boy band of their day. That was what they were supposed to be, a fake Beatles.  Instead, they fought for and won the right to  play, produce and sing music they liked and music they created. All four turned out to be fine songwriters…Michael Nesmith was the most acclaimed, but all four wrote quality material over the years.  Their middle era albums in particular deserve a serious critical second look, many of them stand up quite nicely against even the best groups of that era. Excellent songs, quality vocals, and top notch production.  That they fizzled out due to in-fighting and other pressures is sad, because many people only know them for their radio hits and their television show.

People may not have seen HEAD, the psychedelic film they produced with Jack Nicholson, that skewered themselves mercilessly, or heard the very powerful soundtrack, or some of the deeper cuts that showed a remarkable well of creativity and talent. The tv producers wanted some adorable guys to pretend to be musicians. What they ended up with was a thousand times more interesting.

Davy Jones was the Monkee who wanted the others to get along, who was perfectly happy playing a role as a pretend musician. But like Nesmith and Dolenz, he had an outstanding, memorable voice that helped define pop music of the day. When called upon, he could deliver an outstanding vocal performance, and wrote some of the group's most underrated material.  In a band not given enough credit for their abilities, he was the guy who people pointed at as the worst example, despite all his talent and accomplishments. Listening to the albums where the Monkees took control of their music, Davy goes from the brit teenybop heartthrob to a legitimate songwriter and stylist, and it's lovely to hear.

TMZ is reporting that Davy Jones died today as a result of a heart attack at age 66. I find this terribly, terribly sad, that he didn't live to get the full critical respect they certainly deserve and hopefully will achieve.  A great voice, a talented songwriter.

Frankly, this just sucks.

Here's a video I hope you will watch, even if you aren't a Monkees fan. It's a live, no-sync vocal performance by the band, that seems appropriately bittersweet and is my favorite video of these talented guys when they were still together.

…and what should be done about it?

The bigot group ONE MILLION MOMS is protesting Archie Comics for their positive and prominent portrayal of a gay male character, Kevin Keller, in their recent books. They are also protesting Toys R Us for displaying and selling these books.

These are the same…

It may simply be a case of my own ignorance of the brand's recent actions, but if you would have told me like five years ago that Archie was going to be doing some of the most progressive and forward-thinking things in comics I would've called you an idiot.  Their responses to the negativity and protest of a series that simply acknowledges the fact that gay people exist and are allowed to be happy have been classy as hell, and every time I read a new article about what they're doing right now I get more and more impressed.

Incidentally, they're also putting out an incredible Mega Man series that manages to turn one of my favorite childhood video game series into a story about the weight of war and the effects and consequences of violence, all wrapped up in one of the best children's series I've ever seen in my life.

The short version of all of this is Archie is now cooler than DC or Marvel and how the fuck did that happen.

I think I will go buy a some Archie Comics.

That's the spirit!

Yay!

DC Comics:

Coming in May, DC COMICS-THE NEW 52 "Second Wave" will literally expand the world-building efforts of the comprehensive publishing initiative. With the addition of a parallel Earth that features prominently into both EARTH 2 and WORLDS' FINEST, the developing narrative will encompass new heroes from distinctly different backgrounds, building on the shared universe in some surprising ways.

"Due the events that open the saga of EARTH 2, Wonder Woman is already the last Amazon of this world and she is determined to avenge her sisters…at whatever cost," said EARTH 2 writer James Robinson.

"How did Wonder Woman come to be the last of the Amazons?" asks EARTH 2 editor Pat McCallum. "It's one of the mysteries we'll be getting into with the series. While there will be recognizable faces and settings on EARTH 2, don't for a moment think you're on familiar ground. Do that, and you let your guard down…and then you'll end up like the rest of the Amazons."

Here's a first look at the Wonder Woman of EARTH 2, designed by Jim Lee.

"Wonder Woman is already the last Amazon of this world and she is determined to avenge her sisters…at whatever cost."

Every time.

Every. Damn. Time.

Every time they get the opportunity to write about an entire nation of beautiful, powerful, queer women, women who have created their own culture entirely without the input of men, women who have developed advances in science and religion and magic beyond imagination…

They commit gendered violence en masse. They commit genocide.

Every. Damn. Time.

I might need to re-think what this blog is about.

EVERY TIME someone from Hollywood asked me about Wonder Woman, they wanted a story about a gender war. Every single time. I refused to do it, I would have no part of it.

When I finally DID tell a gender story, the Amazons and Thalarions ended up as allies, in mutual respect.

But it makes me queasy that that trope was the only way Hollywood could see value in Wonder Woman's origin.

Archie Comics responds to the American Family Association:

"We stand by Life with Archie #16. As I've said before, Riverdale is a safe, welcoming place that does not judge anyone. It's an idealized version of America that will hopefully become reality someday.

We're sorry the American Family Association/OneMillionMoms.com feels so negatively about our product, but they have every right to their opinion, just like we have the right to stand by ours. Kevin Keller will forever be a part of Riverdale, and he will live a happy, long life free of prejudice, hate and narrow-minded people."

— Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater

I love these people more all the time. No weasel talk, no shame, no embarrassment, just a positive message in the face of bigots.

GO, ARCHIE.

Dan Parent is an incredible writer that is doing really cool things at Archie Comics.  Support him and the brand, if only to shove it to these lousy turds.

Dan Parent really is something special. And Archie is kicking ass lately, I am delighted they are a force in the industry.
