The Night Before

The night before the release of Stay With Me, all was not quiet through the house. Actually, it is pretty quiet. I had a lot of dental work today, so I’m not talking much, but I am doing a lot of this

Wednesday Ren… Interview with Justin Edwards

Today’s Wednesday Ren is a wee bit different. Instead of just showing you a picture, I have an interview with Justin Edwards for you!

Oh, and here’s a picture. Screen Shot 2014-08-26 at 6.07.30 PM

Justin Edwards is one of the cover models on the cover of WICKED, releases December 8th 2014

Wicked will be available on more vendors and in print.

Now to the interview:

Location: Oklahoma

1. Is modeling your full-time job? If not, what else do you do?

Aside from modeling I am an entertainer (singer/musician), and a firefighter.

A… A model and musician and a firefighter?

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m5oe3zJGjT1r3jju1.gif

2. How did you get into modeling?

A photography & marketing company saw one of my advertisements for a music event I was playing several years back. They asked me to do some commercial modeling for them…one thing led to another and here we are. LOL

3. Wicked is your first cover. How does it feel knowing you’re going to be in a book cover?

Being on a book is something I never really thought about. Now that I am it’s a pretty cool feeling. My reaction when I see it is still, “that’s pretty neat!”

4. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I knew I either wanted to be a professional baseball player or an entertainer. I played baseball theough college (pitcher), then started in entertainment after college.

5. Favorite Musician/Band?

My favorite musician/band of all time is Elvis Presley. My favorite living entertainer is George Strait.

6. Favorite movie and TV show?

For my favorite movie of all time I’d have to say it’s a tie between ‘Forrest Gump’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. My favorite tv shows are ‘Smallville’ and ‘Supernatural’. A huge comic, superhero, and extraterrestrial nerd.lol

Did someone say Supernatural?

SPNG Tags: Dean Winchester / I don’t know what my feelings are doing/ SO MANY FEELINGS<br /><br /><br /><br />Looking for a particular Supernatural reaction gif? This blog organizes them so you don’t have to spend hours hunting them down.

7. Do you like to read?

Although my schedule doesn’t really allow me much free time, I DO love to read. I actually have most of the collections from my favorite authors. Along those lines…I love poetry as well. It seems I can usually find good in any situation by referring back to the genius of my favorite poets and philosophers.

8. What is your ideal date?

For me this is a two-part question. There is my ideal first date, and then there is my ideal date once you have developed a deep romantic/intimate relationship with someone.

My ideal first date would be something informal, fun, and interactive. Anything that would create plenty of opportunities for conversation so we could get to know each other better. There is usually enough nervousness without having to worry about being prim and proper on the first date.

I’m a homebody, so my ideal romantic date, with whom I’m already in a relationship, may be a little different than most folks. For me it’s staying in and spending quality time together without any outside distractions. I’d cook her favorite meal, whether it be something simple, breakfast food, or gourmet dinner. The dinner table would have a bouquet of beautiful roses/flowers as its centerpiece, along with some of the petals spread across the table. The house would be filled with the aroma of her favorite scented candle, and have music playing softly in the background.   After dinner I would give her a special hand written card…the details of which I’ll keep to myself. ;) Then we would spend the rest of the night cuddled up with our favorite movies, drinks of choice, and some type of chocolate… i.e. chocolate covered strawberries.

SPNG Tags: Dean Fleeing / Sam in Pursuit / Jensen / Jared / funny / LET ME LOVE YOU

9. You did an underwater photo shoot. How did you prepare for that? Any struggles? In the end, did you wander what the hell you agreed to do?

I didn’t really do anything different to prepare for shooting underwater… Other than jumping in a pool a couple times and practice holding my breath while trying not to looking like a puffer fish. LOL. The main challenges were controlling all the material attached to Heather’s dress, and trying not to immediately float back to the top of the water once we got to the bottom. I never second-guessed taking the job for the shoot. I mean…I don’t know of many jobs out there that allow you to spend the day in the harms of a beautiful woman. ;)

10. Anything you want to ask me or my readers?

My question for Jennifer is: Where do look for your inspiration to write so many intriguing stories of love, lust, and everything that goes with it?

I really don’t know. I just have an overactive imagination. But now I’m going to write a contemporary romance about a singer/model who’s also a firefighter, just FYI

My question for the readers is: Do y’all ever find yourself applying and/or playing out any of the imaginative ideas from Jennifer’s books in your own romantic lives or adventures?

Guys, answer his question down below in the comments. I’m curious to know this answer

Rapid Fire Questions:

Steak of Chicken: Chicken

Coffee or Tea: Tea

Staying in or Going Out: Staying In

Mountains or the Beach: Mountains

Boxers, Briefs or Neither: Neither ( 0_0)

Summer or Winter: Winter (better for cuddling)

Dogs or Cats: Dogs

Bananas or apples: Bananas (my favorite)

Does the Chupacabra exist: Yes the Chupacabra does exist.

What about Big Foot: Bigfoot IS out there.

Did the last two questions throw you of: No, the last two questions didn’t throw me at all. I love watching shows about them!

Wicked Cover Reveal

It’s time to reveal the Wicked cover, and I like to think it’s wicked awesome. Ha. See what I did  there? I’m a dork. It’s okay.

Cover Background:

When I came up for the idea for Wicked back in May, I wasn’t sure what I wanted for a cover, but I knew I wanted to work with Sarah Hansen from Okay Creations again. She was the mind and talent behind the Wait for You cover, and I knew she could bust out an amazing cover.

We went back and forth on a couple of ideas, and then I stumbled across underwater stock images, and I knew immediately that was what I wanted. Instead of using stock images, we decided to do a photo shoot for ALL the covers in the 3 book series. I hooked up with Kelsey Kukal-Keeton, an amazing photographer who was willing to go under the water for a shoot.

And then we needed models.

Enter Justin Edwards and Heather Noel MacDonald

Um. Let’s try that again.

Some might wander why an underwater shoot. The book isn’t about mermaids, right? Nope. The book isn’t about mermaids. Besides the fact that I have ALWAYS wanted an underwater cover, because I’m obsessed with them,  just like the title, the cover is symbolic to how Ivy is feeling through the course of the book/series. As if one, is slipping underwater, and falling under can be a bad thing… or a really good thing.

It took a couple of shoots to get it right. I mean, swimming in water while trying to be sexy in a dress and in jeans isn’t easy.

Not sure what is happening here, but I think someone is trying to drown someone else…

Screen Shot 2014-09-15 at 8.26.04 AM

Needless to say, underwater cover shoots are NOT easy. I’m thrilled to share that no one was seriously injured during the shoot.

But they did pull off HUNDREDS of amazing shots, and one of them is the cover of WICKED.

New Adult Paranormal

Synopsis:

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

And here is a sneak peek of Wicked.

Before he moved, I placed the very pointy end against his throat, right over a very important artery. “Role reversal, bitch.”

Ren let his arms fall to the mattress as he stared at me through impossibly thick lashes. “That move was really kind of hot.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“You really are Merida.”

“Who in the hell is Merida?”

One side of his mouth kicked up again. “The chick from the movie Brave with—”

“The frizzy red hair. Got it. Thanks. I’m seriously going to stab you.”

“She didn’t have frizzy hair,” he argued. “And besides, she was hot.”

I stared down at him. “You think a Disney character is hot?”

“Have you seen some of those Disney characters?”

“She was not hot. She’s like the least hot of all Disney characters.” I hadn’t seen the movie, but I remember catching glimpses of it. The chick didn’t even have boobs. Why couldn’t he say I reminded him of Ariel or something?

Then again, Ariel was kind of stupid, giving up her voice for a dude.

His brows lifted. “She could kick ass, therefore she was hot.”

My fingers tightened on the stake. Okay. So Merida was a badass, and I guessed that was better than saying I reminded him of Belle, the Stockholm victim, and now I was oddly flattered. “This conversation has taken a weird turn.”

“Yeah,” he drawled lazily, and then moved his arms. I tensed, but he didn’t move to grab me. He lifted his head and pressed the vulnerable section of his neck against the stake, carefully folding his arms behind his head. “It has.”

***

So I’m super excited to finally share the cover with you guys. I hope ya’ll love it as much as I do, and I can’t wait to share more about Wicked as it gets closer to the release date. Always keep an eye out on my blog for an interview with the models.

In other news, don’t forget that Stay With Me comes out just over a week from now, on September 23rd! If you pre order, you will receive a special Cam and Avery bonus scene. All you have to do is go HERE and follow the instructions.

Today I have a teaser for you from Stay With Me

***

My brain short-circuited the moment it fully recognized that Jax was kissing me—that, in fact, his lips really were on mine.

And it wasn’t just a peck on the lips.

No, it wasn’t deep and there weren’t tongues involved, nothing like the kisses I read about in romance novels, the wet kind that seemed a little gross to me, but I imagined, if done right, would have me dropping my shorts like no tomorrow, but this kiss . . . it was real.

His lips were melded to mine, and I was awed by the way they felt. They were soft, but firm, and I didn’t know one thing could be both. They followed the curve of my lips, as if he were just mapping them out.

My arms were frozen at my sides, but I could feel my body start to lean forward, off the wall and toward his. Our bodies didn’t connect, though, which was probably a good thing.

I was already only seconds away from combusting.

Jax lifted his head from mine, and I realized then that my eyes were closed. Even so, I could feel his gaze on my warm cheeks, on the tip of my nose . . . my lips.

“You kissed me,” I whispered, and yeah, it was a stupid statement, but I was feeling pretty stupid.

“Yeah.” His voice sounded deeper, gruffer. Sexier. “I did.”

I forced my eyes open and was staring at an unofficial member of the Hot Guy Brigade.

He leaned in, his arm against the wall taking his weight as he dropped his hand from my chin. “I don’t kiss girls that I don’t find hot as hell or beautiful. So, you get my point?”

There were fuzz balls in my brain. “You kissed me to prove a point?”

A ghost of a smile appeared. “Felt like it was the quickest way to prove the point.”

Show Me The Money

I’m just going to get right to it.

Do readers pay the salary of authors?

So let’s tackle the whole money thing first off.

Some of might be wondering why in the holy heck are we even discussing this, but someone said to a bunch of readers that they didn’t, a poo storm of epic proportions went down, and those who are addicted to social media such as I are debating this. And I’m gonna chime in because the people on Twitter who follow me are enablers.

They made me do it.

SPNG Tags: Castiel / Sorry / Cliche / but heart-breaking<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I wanted to apologize to my followers. Stuff has been going on in my personal life lately, and I haven’t had time to post gifs today. Don’t worry, things should be back to normal tomorrow!<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Looking for a particular Supernatural reaction gif? This blog organizes them so you don’t have to spend hours hunting them down.

Of course, readers don’t pay an author’s salary. We don’t make salaries. Our income can be as fickle  as me deciding between the Winchester brothers and Theo James gifs. Our advances can go up and down. Our royalties can go up and down.

But….

SPNG Tags: Sam/ Jared/ Bitch face / FUNNY

This is my opinion. I haven’t been in the biz for an extremely long time, so my opinion probably isn’t worth that much, but here it is anyway.

READERS do pay the authors.

Yep. That’s what I’m going to go with.

When a reader/fan/mountain goat tells me that they pay my salary, I don’t correct them on their use of word. Because while we don’t make a salary, that reader… yeah, even the mountain goat if it’s buying a book of mine, is paying me, one way or another.

And here’s how.

Advance:

Before we get into advances, not every publisher always offers an advance. Some authors have straight royalty contracts, so there’s no advance to be earned out. As soon as a book is bought by a READER that goes toward the royalty statement.  Not every publisher issues royalty statements  every six months either. Some are quarterly. Two of my publishers pay every four months. One of my publishers, through one imprint, actually pays every month. Then there are indie authors who receive the money READERS have paid for their book directly.

original.0

If you get an advance, the publisher is paying you money up front and they hope to earn that money back through book sales. Through READERS going out and purchasing the books, downloading them onto their eReaders, or lending them through a library.  They are paying me by paying the publisher so my advance earns out. And not just my advance, but also my marketing budget.

Here’s a sucky reality. If a publisher pays you an advance for a book/book series and that publisher does not earn out its advance in a certain time frame and their profit vs. loss ratio resembles a pie chart that’s similar to diversity in YA, then yeah, they’re probably going to make you another deal. Maybe. Maybe not. And that deal may be for the exact same amount. But if that series doesn’t earn out, you may not be able to get that same advance. You may not even go back to contract. And you may find it hard to sell to another publisher, because they got Bookscan numbers at their fingertips. It’s the same thing if you’re an actor and the movie flops. Or a band whose record doesn’t sell.  People aren’t going to continue throwing money at you. Why would they?

If READERS don’t buy my books and my publisher continues to not earn out, eventually that’s going to catch up to me. They’re going to stop throwing money at me in terms of advances. As expected.

That doesn’t make it my READERS’ fault though if my book doesn’t sell or doesn’t hit a list.

I mean, I could have an awesome marketing campaign with glitzy book trailers and reveal on EW and Taylor Swift could be holding my book while boarding a plane and that Harry guy from One Direction could be making out with my cover, but sometimes books just… they just don’t sell. Sometimes a book just doesn’t connect with a wide audience. Just because I’ve have bestsellers doesn’t mean I will have another one. Sometimes books just flop.  It sucks, but it happens.

In a way, the power is in the READERS’ hands in terms of what is published. What is bought by the masses will continue to be published, and so on. The READERS are paying the author, whether it’s through earning out an advance, paying straight royalties, or directly to the author.

READERS pay the author. To me,  there is no way around that. There is no debating that fact. Telling READERS that they don’t boggles my mind. I’m not going to argue the whole paying for a product and not the author stuff. In the end, does it matter? Someone is still forking over cash and I’m  benefiting from that cash. There is no way that if you guys didn’t buy my books that I would be able to continue publishing. And for that reason alone, readers are owed major respect for that. Major. Respect.

SPNG Tags: Sam Winchester / Ladies and Gentlemen / TOO PRECIOUS FOR THIS WORLD / hugging / hugs<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Looking for a particular Supernatural reaction gif? This blog organizes them so you don’t have to spend hours hunting them down.

Yes, sometimes we get asked weird questions I cannot even fathom why someone would think I’d know the answer to it. Sometimes we get asked the same question over and over again.  Sometimes we do have readers asking for things that we can’t do and then getting mad about it. And sometimes we have terrible and horrible things said to us. Once, a reader emailed me and said they were happy to hear that I was going blind, because maybe then I’d stop writing shitty books.

Sometimes being an author kind of sucks.

Sometimes.

Okay. Maybe 1% of the time.

Even when I get asked weird questions or the same question over and over again, asked for something I cannot provide or sent a horrible email or tweet, I could not be more fucking grateful to be doing something that I loved.

This isn’t me kissing up to readers. This isn’t me capitalizing on the typical drama llama that ensues every couple of months. Nope. READERS aren’t fooled into spending money by a prettily worded blog post.  Here are the reasons I feel this post is necessary and why I’m grateful YOU PAY ME.

To be getting paid to do something I dreamed about as a kid.

To know that I have succeeded at something that has meant the world to someone else.

To have people messaging me from all over the planet.

To have people show up at my events.

To have access to really hot cover models.

To have people want to actually meet me.

To get emails from people who thank me for helping them through something rough because of a story I wrote.

To have a parent email me to tell me how something I wrote helped their child.

To have someone say that want to be a writer like me (You don’t want that, btw. Aim higher. Like Nora Roberts for example.)

To meet a young girl who has had such a shit-tastic childhood, but is sitting there in front of me, all smiles because books BOOKS got her through it.

To look at hot dudes. Did I mention that before?

To have a job I am passionate about.

To be able to distract myself from the fact that at some point I might not be able to do this anymore.

To be able to do something that enables me to meet people all around the world.

To be able to provide for myself and my family if necessary.

To not worry about tomorrow.

To be able to work all day in yoga pants.

To sleep in if I want to or get up at the crack of dawn and start working.

To not shower until 3 in the afternoon.

To hear my mom say she was proud of me before she died.

To know that when I leave this earth, a part of me will live on.

To know that someone, somewhere is reading a book of mine or has.

To even have this website.

To simply live doing something I love.

To, dare I say, have hot cover models again?

And none of that, not a damn moment of any of that, would’ve been possible without READERS going out, buying my books and supporting me. Without READERS spending their hard earned money on one of my books.

So yes, you do pay my bills. You also pay my agent’s bills. My editor’s bills. My publisher’s. My cover designer’s, and so on.

READERS are the most important chain in the publishing link. Without readers, publishing would not be possible.

The all mighty dollar stops there.

And the truth is, I don’t know a single author personally who doesn’t feel that way, who doesn’t recognize who is providing for them in the end or not value every single one of their readers.

And obligatory Theo James pic

The Choice is in YOUR hands

I’ve had to keep this a secret for over a year. A YEAR. For anyone who knows me, knows how hard this has been, but finally, the time has come.

I have some really exciting news to share with you today—an announcement unlike any I’ve ever made before.

I’ve had a blast checking out your comments about White Hot Kiss, Book 1 in the Dark Elements trilogy for Harlequin TEEN. Most of you have not been shy about saying which guy you prefer for Layla—the wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or uber-hot and protective Warden Zayne. And with book two, Stone Cold Touch, poised to go on sale October 21st, I cannot wait to see which boy makes a grab for your heart.

I’m glad you all have such strong opinions on the burning question of Roth vs. Zayne, because I have a secret to admit: I’m still not sure which guy I like better for Layla.

Zayne’s the one she grew up crushing on, the one she never thought could love her back, but things are changing between them and dreams that once seemed impossible might finally be within her reach. And Roth—oh, Roth. He’s the bad boy she never knew she wanted and now can’t stop thinking about, and he’s gone to incredible lengths to prove the depths of his feelings for her.

You can see why I might have a hard time choosing which of these guys will end up with Layla. So—here comes the announcement—the folks at Harlequin TEEN and I decided there’s only one solution….

We’re going to do something I don’t think has ever done before. We’re going to leave Layla’s choice in YOUR hands.

Yep, you read that correctly. YOU are going to decide who Layla will ultimately end up with—Roth or Zayne.

Here’s how this is going to work:

Beginning on Tuesday, October 21st, the day Stone Cold Touch goes on sale, you’ll have 3 weeks to visit the series website, www.thedarkelementsseries.com to take a poll and decide which guy Layla should ultimately choose in the final book in the trilogy, Every Last Breath.

At the end of 3 weeks, we will tally all the votes, and that’s when I’ll start writing Every Last Breath. The guy who gets the most votes is the one Layla will pick.

To prevent early spoilers, I’m not going to reveal who won the poll in advance…you’ll have to wait until Every Last Breath goes on sale on July 28th, 2015 to find out whether Zayne or Roth wins Layla in the end. I promise the book will be epic and definitely worth the wait!

I’ve always had the world’s most devoted and outspoken readers, so I know Layla’s fate is in the best of hands with you guys, and I’m counting on you to get out there and vote and tell all your friends to do the same. And if you haven’t yet read the Dark Elements, you’ve got plenty of time to get up to speed before it’s time to vote: the e-prequel novella, Bitter Sweet Love, and White Hot Kiss are both available now [ Amazon , B&N , iBooks], and you can preorder Stone Cold Touch here [Amazon , B&N , iBooks].

I hope you’re as excited about this news as I am, and that you’ll spread the word. Layla needs all the help she can get in choosing between the world’s hottest two guys!

A Wicked cover for a WICKED book…

When I came up with the idea behind Wicked in May of 2014, I really didn’t know what I wanted as a cover, but I knew I wanted to work with Sarah Hansen from Okay Creations again. She was the master of magic behind the original Wait for You cover, which has been one of my favorite covers of mine.

Until now.

Several weeks ago, Sarah and I went back and forth on what kind of cover I wanted for Wicked and the following two books. I wanted something different for me and something symbolic for the characters. As we were browsing through stock photos, I stumbled across an underwater photo, and I knew IMMEDIATELY what I wanted. I’ve always loved underwater photos– they are just so stunning and striking.  So I asked Sarah if she thought we could get one of them. The problem is, most underwater photos are rights managed, and in every day people speak, that means a huge pain the arse to use.

So Sarah suggested we do our own photo shoot underwater, and I was all like:

She brought in photographer Kelsey Kukal- Keeton, who apparently has been dying to do an underwater photo shoot. So there was a bit of serendipity in this. And a lot of hot guys I got to pick from before settling on our “Ren” and then our “Ivy”

But I was concerned. I mean underwater shoots are no joke. You need special equipment and models who don’t look like they’re holding their breaths in every photo. A lot of things could go wrong. Like, our models could drown when weights are attached to their dress. Underwater shoots are some serious shit, ya’ll.

Then I started seeing the photos from the shoot and I… I was like…

The photos were stunning and hot and overall amazing. And did I say sexy as you’ve guys have seen from the pics I shared in August. Both Kelsey and Sarah listened to what I wanted, from the models down to the color of the dress to the positioning of the models UNDERWATER for all three books.

Anyway, they did an awesome, awesome job.

The actual cover for Wicked will be revealed on October 10th (bloggers will have a chance to sign up for the reveal) and shortly thereafter we have some awesome behind the scenes stuff for you guys, but I do have a cover placement for you today that is everything EXCEPT the main image, you know, just to give you a taste of what’s coming.

Yeah, Sarah and Kelsey? This sums them up
