Being Brave
I want to be as brave as so many of you have been.
I’ve been asked many times since readers were able to get their hands on Scorched about how I was able to capture Andrea’s depression and anxiety issues, and I normally answer with half of the truth. Yes. Half. I have a background in psychology and I’d worked in a mental health facility. I mostly dealt with what were considered serious illnesses, ones where many of the patients were in a group home setting, requiring twenty-four hour care for a range of issues, mainly personality disorders and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Many of the patients had different levels of depression and anxiety, some of it even caused by the medication given to treat their illness.
One of the things about certain cases of depression that always stuck out to me was what one of the doctors I knew had called the Silent Killer. You know, the kind of depression no one, not even you, sees. Its low level, always there but in the background. There’s no reason for it—no pass trauma, no exact cause. Maybe there’re poor coping skills or inability to process disappointment, but there’s no real reason. You can compartmentalize like no one else. You can cut people out of your life easily and without a second thought. You have a good life, good friends, good job, good school, but it’s there. It’s the kind of depression that’s usually accompanied by anxiety and panic, also low level. It’s the kind of depression that allows you to live each day, allows you to be happy and to take part in life, the kind of depression that does not manifest in any visible symptoms and have little, to no warning signs. It’s the kind of depression that fools you and everyone around you, puts a smile on your face and warmth in your heart, but it’s always there, in the background. Waiting. It’s the kind of depression that allows you to live until it decides that it will no longer allow it. It’s the kind of depression that creates a Plan B in the back of your mind, that has you thinking things like ‘If this doesn’t happen, I’m just going to end it’ or ‘If I can’t do this, I will do this.’ And it’s the kind of depression that sneaks up on the happiest of people and takes them away and everyone is left wondering how did we not see it coming?
Calling it the Silent Killer is dead on. The doctor knew what he was saying. It’s that low-level depression that no one pays any attention to, but it is as deadly and life altering as any other form of depression.
I’ve never, ever talked about any of this publicly and many, many of my friends and those who work with me will be shocked to learn this, but since so many of you have had the courage to speak out in your reviews, in your private emails to me and in your open letters, and posts, I wanted to be as brave as many of you and explain why it’s so hard for me to know what to say in response.
You see, a lot of Scorched came from personal experience. Not the eyewitness kind. The reason why I had gone to college to study psychology was because when I was a teenager, I attempted suicide. Looking back, I can a hundred percent say it was over a stupid reason, but I had, to be blunt, shit coping skills. One day my brain just said, I’m done with this and that was that. Whatever switch in my brain that existed had been flipped. I did it. I scared the living hell out of my parents and family. I was lucky, because it hadn’t worked.
I became fascinated with how the brain worked after that, because I didn’t understand why my brain had done that. Fast forward a couple of years and that’s when the anxiety really started to rear its head. Nothing triggered it. My heart would start racing for no reason, my head would go in really weird as shit places, and I would feel like I couldn’t breathe or that I was having a heart attack. It would come and be gone within minutes. Easy to ignore. Which was hilarious considering what I was studying in school when it was happening. So easy to ignore, because I began self-medicating and self-medicating is so insidious because it doesn’t have to be alcohol or drugs. Oh no, that little dragon manifests in so many inconspicuous ways—working out all the time, restricting food, doubling up school work, taking two jobs, and so on and so forth until that no longer works and then you move on to worse things.
Eventually I recognized what was happening. To this day I still have problems with anxiety and when I was diagnosed with RP, knowing I would loose my eyesight, it kicked thing around in my head that didn’t need kicked around. I’m lucky the anxiety isn’t serious, but since it’s not triggered by anything in particular, it can get super annoying. Usually when I feel that cold burn crawling up the back of my neck or the skip of my heart or catch of my breath, I’m able to chill myself out. Breathe. Focus just on breathing until it goes away. I know that switch is still somewhere in my brain, buried deep now, but there.
And it’s hard to respond to those sharing their stories when I’m sitting back sharing nothing. When I’m just smiling and saying thank you. But I do understand you. I feel you. I know where you’re coming from.
The reason why I wanted to tell you the truth behind Scorched is because there are so many people out there with the same issues, including me. I’ve had some very, very dark, quiet moments, but I’m still here. And those dark, quiet moments weren’t my fault. They’re not your fault. There is no shame. You are not weak.
Sitting next to you in class or on the train tomorrow or in your office, is someone who is battling a very Silent Killer or who is managing anxiety. Your brain… it just doesn’t work right all the time, but there is help. And that help will make sure you can allow yourself to live. That you can take the power back from depression and anxiety, and you can live. You can go on and chase your dreams and you can achieve them. Depression and anxiety does not define you. It will not darken your dreams.
Most importantly, it will not take away your happily ever after.

Scorched is out!
Today is release day of Scorched! Yay!
“A powerful, deeply moving story about friendship, redemption, and happily ever afters.”
Sometimes life leaves a mark…
Most days, Andrea doesn’t know whether she wants to kiss Tanner or punch him in the gut. He is seriously hot, with legit bedroom eyes and that firefighter body of his, but he’s a major player, and they can’t get along for more than a handful of minutes. Until now.
Tanner knows he and Andrea have had an epic love/hate relationship for as long as he can remember, but he wants more love than hate from her. He wants her. Now. Tomorrow. But the more he gets to know her, the more it becomes obvious that Andrea has a problem. She’s teetering on the edge and every time he tries to catch her, she slips through his fingers.
Andrea’s life is spiraling out of control, and it doesn’t matter that Tanner wants to save her, because when everything falls apart and she’s speeding toward rock bottom, only she can save herself.

Scorched
So for those wondering what Scorched deals with, RT Book Reviews touches a bit on the subject matter.
“Armentrout’s latest new adult offering tackles substance abuse and mental illness — and, thankfully, the love of a good man is not going to be what heals this heroine.” – RT Book Reviews.
Scorched was a hard book to write. It deals with two very serious issues, and out of all the books I’ve written, I think it’s possibly the most meaningful to me. There definitely is love of a good man in the book, but like the review states, that’s not what heals Andrea. And there’s steamy romance and humor, but Scorched delves into the mind of someone who feels as if their brain is ‘broken,’ who self-medicates, and they’re not quite sure how to find their happily ever after.
What some readers have said after reading Scorched:
“Just finished this meaningful book. So much more than a romance.” – Nichol Brown
“The story was powerful and emotional. The quiet thoughts that plagued Andrea are something every women has experienced in some degree. As a result, it’s gonna grab onto your heart and squeeze. But the hope and help that her family, friends and Tanner gives her helps her find the strength to save herself. It’s not love that cures her but it does give her strengh.” – Stuck in Books
“So powerful. So deeply moving. Painful. Redemptive. Hopeful.” – Liza Wiemer
“Tears, people. Lots of tears.” Krista from Krista’s Dust Jacket
“Once again Jennifer L. Armentrout delivers a poignant story about life, love and friendship, infused with her signature humor, wit and swoon.” – Jen from Jenuine Cupcakes

As I’ve stated before, Scorched is a standalone, companion novel to Frigid. You do not need to read Frigid to know what is going on in Scorched, but if you have read Frigid, you’ll be happy to know that Kyler and Syd are in most of the book.
Please note:
Since this is being run and offered by the U.S. publisher, they cannot send the swag packs overseas. Sorry guys, but if Scorched is going to be published in your country, it will be up to that publisher to fund and send out swag packs.

New Releases and Heading out!
I have two books releasing in June this year.

Scorched releases June 16th

Scorched is a standalone, but does feature two characters from Frigid, and yes, Kyler and Syd are in Scorched.
Scorched is probably one of my most serious books I’ve written. There is definitely romance, hot and steamy and sweet, but it covers two very serious issues that many people face at any age or know someone who is currently dealing with these issues. It was probably one of the hardest books I’ve written, next to Forever With You (September 2015), and while there’s many, many moments of lightness, this book kind of got me in the feels. Which is rare for me when it comes to my own books.
An official description can be read HERE .

1001 Dark Nights Dream of You Novella releases June 23rd

Amazon
Dream of You features Reece’s (Stay With Me, Fall With Me) older brother Colton. You know, the sexy detective. DOY was also another tricky book, because I can relate to Abby (I can’t believe I’m admitting that out loud), and it doesn’t have anything to do with her love of her books. She’s an editor, guys, and you’re gonna recognize some of the names she works with, especially her current author. (HINT J.M.) But Abby has a hard time connecting with herself… with who she is now and how she feels about herself. Of course, there’s romance, but it’s also a story of self-discovery. This is definitely adult, but fans of new adult can read it. You will also recognize some characters.
An official description can be found HERE .

OMG. This gif is making me dizzy.

It appears you can order Obsidian, Onyx, Opal, and Origin in their original, standalone covers right now on Amazon. (Origin is almost out of stock). So I ordered them to make sure it was legit, and it is, and now I have them for you.
