IT REALLY IS NO FUN TO TALK ABOUT THE WEATHER
“The nicest days are always the ones we don’t plan.” --V.E. Schwab, THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE
I received a 'piggy at a party' card from Barbara Reynolds (Ha-ha):
20 May 95
Dear Mike,
Thanks for the great postcards and note. I know you’ll be having a great birthday in Miami, etc. This piggy card came from Alice’s work and since it is the Year of the Boar and ‘your Boar year’ and you become 36 years old I thought it fun.
I saw an ad for the BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY movie a couple of nights ago. It looks good. Thank you for your compliment comparing me to Meryl Streep. Funny thing...RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT was shown on our plane to Dusseldorf. Since I had seen it before I took the opportunity to sleep for about the first hour, then viewed the balance. It’s so picturesque. Today, I finally saw SECRET OF ROAN INISH, so good and so happy to see it—all of the islands.
We saw a lot of islands on my trip. Two weeks went quickly. My friend, David, was awaiting me (thankfully) and we took the train to Hagen (stopped a few minutes in Dusseldorf). It was very warm and sunny (which put me into sleepy mode). I was ready to sleep any way—but got to Hagen (80 minutes eastward via train) and checked my bags and did a tour of Hagen that day. There was a celebration in Hagen for the 50th Anniversary of Liberation. It was early because the Mayor of Hagen was scheduled to be elsewhere on the 9th of May, so we went to a gathering—old photos, poetry and music—put together by a group of peace activists (some friends of David’s). I found myself nodding off during the German poetry. We continued the tour and went to the Hostel where I got booked for the night, then found a bar for a bite of dinner. We stayed another day in Hagen to prepare for our train trip to Slovenia, leaving Hagen at 6AM and arrived Bled, Slovenia 4;30AM, Sunday. It was so quiet. It was beautiful. It took quite a while to get our bearings but worth it. A very nice Hostel in Bled and picturesque town with a lake with an island (complete with an old church). You can go via gondola to the island but we rented a row boat. A castle was near our hostel and a lovely pathway up the hill was an easy step in back of our place.
We left Bled on the 9th and stopped in Ljublijana (capital and largest city in Slovenia) where there was a big 50th celebration of Liberation. I got a great walk and lunch by the river, then continued to the coast of Istria to Koper (where the Hostel was unavailable—thankfully there was one hotel where we had a decent room, viewing the Bay for three nights). Then we breezed down the coast and stopped at PORAC, then got to PULA and found a hotel off the pyramid bus exit. This was a marvelous locale by the sea and a commune, a peaceful spot. We had begun to get rain and advised best to wait until June for swimming. David took it on regardless. We had two nights there and viewed the Ampitheater and found an open church. We had some good food. Sunday, we got on a bus to Rjeka, then took a day trip to KIRK. Then we caught a train to Salzburg, another 4:30AM arrival—by 10:15AM we had a room in a good Hostel. This one had so many young Americans. It was fun. After my nap we explored and enjoyed the sunshine and also enjoyed being away from the Third World Country (where the buses always have taped music). We walked along the Danube River and ate gelato and bought Mozart sweets and went to the place Mozart was born, a very comfortable town.
Thursday we ‘trained our way’ through Augsburg and got the ICE train to Mannheimer, arriving Hagen at 2AM. We slept until 5AM, walked in rain to bus to train to airport. I got home at 4pm, Wednesday, cleaned out my bags, took a bath and made some soup, then sat down with my mail, prioritizing. I really wanted to make an appearance at my Math class—so I was rushing it. I discovered to my misfortune that my car had been impounded. Alice had failed me, so I got a friend to help and got my car 2 ½ hours later. No class and I’m staying a distance from Alice until I deal with my feelings. Oh well. I had a good trip and really enjoyed being with David. He plans on going to St. Petersburg, so I hope I may visit him there. We’ll see.
So, buddy, I’ve got to go. Oh yes, I hope you got your postcard. I didn't’ have this address in my book. Oh well, I’m sure you’ll get it eventually. Have a great Birthday!
Love, Barbara
Alan also wrote a few early words for my forthcoming Birthday, using a cool postcard from LA TERRASE AU SOLEIL in Ceret, France (where we had stayed the last time we were in France). Alan had forgotten his shoes there and he never forgets when I said, “Well, I guess they weren’t that important to you---otherwise, you wouldn’t have forgotten them!” I know he didn’t like that I said that at the time—but we can laugh about it now.
Mike, Remember where I left my shoes? It didn’t matter, did it? Let’s go back—Happy Birthday. I hope you enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...
Love, Alan
Oh...after 5 ½ years, I thought you should be surprised once in a while. Happy Birthday! Your present is under wraps, waiting for you to pick it out—a mountain bike of your choice. This present should hold you until the real one arrives.
Love, Alan
And lovely Paloma sent her cute Birthday card with a nice, typewritten letter:
Le 22/05/95
Dear Michael,
Just a few words to wish you a very Happy Birthday. So, 36, huh! You know now –how it feels! I’m sure you are as young, as gorgeous as ever...
Love you, Miss you, Paloma
I had recently written to her a few days ago:
Dear Paloma,
It’s your lucky and happy day...after all, you’re getting few cards from me instead of the typical bill or junk mail. I understand your being busy—me too! Time sure does seem to fly by. Last weekend, 5-12 to 5-15 I went to the Bay Area. I didn’t even to get San Francisco. I only went o Alameda and Berkeley. On Saturday, May 13th I met a friend of mine named Dorothy Rua for lunch at Chez Panisse! Isn’t that the restaurant where you friend is a chef? I wish I remembered her name or bought the picture of her because my waitress wasn’t very helpful at helping me out when I mentioned it. Dorothy lives in Walnut Creek and is married and has 2 kids. We used to work together back in 1987-88 at SMART Yellow Pages. We’ve kept in touch through writing letters now and again. I hadn’t seen her in 3 years and she’s only in Northern California, so don’t feel bad that we haven't’ seen each other since 1990!
I can’t believe it about the incident of your stolen car. That’s really terrible. I can’t believe it when idiots do that—especially to someone who’s so good and that I care about. I know it must be nerve racking when you think of the items in the car that can’t easily be replaces. It’s a good thing you didn't get those dollars—but you’re right--it’s a good time to ‘scoop’ up on them. Although, it must be tough now with the Residence Club being 80% of capacity. Business must be goo though, right?
I saw the Dustin Hoffman movie, ALERTE (as you call it; however, it was titled OUTBREAK here. It was good—but scary, yet touching in parts. I also saw TOOTSIE, KRAVER vs KRAMER, RAINMAN, THE GRADUATE—but I’ve never seen LITTLE BIG MAN. Is that any good? And yes, I also saw BENNY AND JOON and INDECENT PROPOSAL, starring DEMI MOORE and ROBERT REDFORD. Those were good. You have good taste but then if you didn't, I wouldn’t be writing you. Ha-ha. I thought PULP FICTION was too violent and the storyline or plot was just about killing and drugs—it was stupid. The scenery was a bit creative but that’s about it.
The Gianfranco Ferre APLA Fashion Show fundraising event was great. Liza Minelli was there to honor him and an actor named Patrick Dempsey (I don’t know if you know him; he’s not really a big star). He was one of the guys used as a model. The rest of the models were ‘real models. Oh, and wow...Patty Hearst models now. She was one of the models!
Oh, I do know who Tippi Hedren is, too. Tippi is older now, isn’t she? She was on my mom’s favorite soap operas called BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. I have seen Estelle Halliday btu I never knew who she was until you told me. I’ve seen her on a few magazine covers. I didn’t know she was from France. When I went to New York I made a point to go to the Fashion Café which is owned by ELLE, CLAUDIA and NAOMI. I was disappointed because I wanted a drink at the bar and they did not even have an “ELLE”, “NAOMI” or “CLAUDIA” cocktail. I gave them the idea. I wonder if they’ll do it. I wanted to order an “ELLE”. Elle McPherson was in a film called SIRENS. Did you see it? Hugh Grant was in it and it’s really good. I think it was filmed in Australia. For my Birthday, I am leaving on May 27th for Miami and Key West with Alan. It’s supposed to be 95 degrees there ight now. I need some heat, a tan, rest and relaxation.
My nieces, Ashley and Holly and my mom, are coming to visit me from June 17th to June 26th. That should be fun. Ashley is eleven now and Holly is seven.
I’ll drop you a card while in sunny Florida. This is leftover stationery from Honk Kong, The CONRAD Hilton Hotel obviously. Thanks for remembering that my Birthday is coming. MIss you...I should plan a France getaway to see you. Time will tell. Later.
Love, Michael
Balaruc, le 23 mai, 1995
Dear Michael,
You are right. That was my lucky day. I was not expecting a letter form you at all, today but I got one. That was a nice surprise!
You are very lucky, too. I would love to go to Berkeley. French food is great but we do not have bagels and cream cheese, cakes at Virginia Bakery, your Chinese food and your pizzas (I like yours better). Well, after all maybe it is better for me if I don't got to the States or I will come back really FAT!
I do not know if Unmi works at CHEZ PANISSE after all. She was going to 2 years ago but she also had other plans, I think. In fact, when Unmi and Duane, her husband, came to France that was the first and the last time I had seen them. They just stayed for about 4 days. After that she sent me an invitation for her wedding party. I often get invitations for parties in California, as you can guess I never go!
In fact, if Unmi came to visit it is because she wanted to work in our restaurant in Sete. She is the niece of Jean Saperstein who was the owner of the Montessori School in Berkeley. I used to work for Jean and her husband, Guy who may come this summer. That’s what she told me in her last Christmas card. Here is the last letter. She sends all of her friend every year, so that you have an idea bout who she is. Bonnie also sent this kind of letter this year. It is not very personal but that sure is the best way to give lots of news to a lot of people.
I was thinking about that the other day, one of the things I really miss most is when we used to go out together. We always had something to talk about, remember? It really is awful to be with people when you have nothing to say. I believe I am kind of friendly, so I try to force myself to find something to talk about but it really is no fun to talk about the weather.
Your last letter made me jealous though. I thought I was the only one you used to write this way. It seems I was wrong. I am talking about Dorothy! Oh well, you know how life is. That’s ok. I’ll survive and I’ll keep talking to you!
The police found our car 4-days ago, but we do not want it back anymore. We can choose, the insurance company is going to pay us tomorrow. I will also see I f there is something left inside. WE have now made up our mind for a new car, this time it is going to be a red SEAT TOLEDO, something I am happy about si that we are going to have the air conditioning. Summers are so hot. I’m less happy moneywise, of course. I’m not that crazy about cars. I’d rather travel. Oh well, we’ll see.
What is really scary about the OUTBREAK movies is that it’s happening right now in Africa. They talk about it every day in the news. Planes are coming from there all the time. A few years ago the EBOLA virus killed some people in Germany.
You should see LITTLE BIG MAN. That’s a fantastic movie. I liked it a lot. I also liked Kevin Costner’s DANCING WITH WOLVES. I think about it because that’s the same kind of story. Since I find you gorgeous, I’d better have good taste, right? Ah, ah, ah!
I just saw a movie I liked a lot: TRUE ROMANCE. The story was written by Quentin Tarentino (of Pulp Fiction). It was awfully violent but it really kept me awake until the end. There were so many great actors who played in it (and in small parts—Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt). I loved Brad Pitt’s part. I’ve seen him in such great movies: THELMA AND LOUISE and another one where he was a serial killer, I don’t remember the title. Have you seen LEGENDS OF THE FALL? I have not.
I know who Patrick Dempsey is. I remember him in a comedy where he was going to get married and they invited the Pope to their wedding for un. Does it ring a bell? I’ve seen him iin other movies, too. I do not think Patty Heart models. She is kind of fat but designers seem to like to use stars as models. Jean-Paul Gaultier used MADONNA many times (and Neneh Sherry—I like her), Azzedine Alaia had Grace Jones and Sharon Stone in a fashion show last year, too. I don’t remember which one. Catherine Deneuve is always with Yves Saint Laurent. I know all of these things because I’m always dressed by them, of course. jean-Paul Gaultier would have to pay a lot for me to wear his clothes. Yuk! That’s a fun show to watch though. He especially makes men look really ridiculous. With him you would wear beautiful leopard dress or even worse. He loves skirts for men. He wore one for the Cannes Film Festival—but again if I made as many bucks as he does, I would also wear the same clothes. Last year, there was an ad in the newspapers where he was looking or models that were not models, he was looking for different people, this homeless guy is now a model because of him.
I did not think SIRENS was good. I was not planning to go see it. It seemed boring I guess I was wrong.
I have to go now. Write me. Love you, Paloma
And so, after reading a letter from Paloma I always feel reminiscent. I often wish I could blink and just be in Paris. I would love to be in any part of France for that matter. There is something special about that country. I cannot put my finger on it exactly. I just know that when I'm there I always experience something new. I read a book recently where a woman asked if you could live somewhere with only one season what would it be? “Spring”, she says “when everything is new”. “Fall", he says “when everything is fading”. And now I digress, should I tell Paloma that I still have NOT seen "LITTLE BIG MAN"?

A G00D LAUGH!
It's always exciting to sleep somewhere else. --Jean-Cedric Michel, THE DAY APPLE BOUGHT GREECE, a novel Well, it's my birthday month and I like my birthday month to be spontaneous. As Dorothy described in a recent letter 'time does pass quickly' and as Gloria (Alan's mother) reminded me: we must enjoy the present. She has problems with that herself. It is not easy to enjoy the present moment or the present day. I am working towards doing that and in the middle of it all I strive for a good laugh.
May 10, 1995, an exciting event
Alan and I attended the Gianfranco FERRE APLA-Fashion Show event in Santa Monica tonight. It was cool to see Liza Minnelli kiss the Italian Fashion Designer, Gianfranco, after she presented him with the Crystal Apple Award from APLA-Aids Project Los Angeles. Ferre was honored by the CA Fashion Industry Friends and APLA for his efforts in their fight against the disease. They know how to organize these affairs elegantly. I love how they planned it for a Wednesday night. People assume things like this happen on Friday or Saturday nights. I prefer it on a weekday night. I really enjoyed the fashion show. At first I was a little nervous, but then Alan added some encouragement; whereas, I said, "You're right, we'll just pretend we are Producers." Ha-ha
May 12, 1995, a postcard from Gloria
Hi, miss you and Alan! I know you would like a postcard of CHICAGO since you don’t have one in your collection. CHICAGO is a great city, just an enlarged San Francisco. Hope you get this card before you get home. Regards to All.
Love Always, Gloria and Jack
May 13, 1995
It was nice to be back in the Bay Area to see mom for a weekend escape. I kept my date for lunch with Dorothy Rua, also. We had a lovely lunch in Berkeley at Chez Panisse. I filled her in on the latest goings on with me. She thinks her life is boring—but I don’t. I like hearing what she says. She makes me laugh. And what does everyone need: A GOOD LAUGH!
First Cousin, Carol Lucero sent a sweet floral card
Well, hello, Michael. Yes, I’m still alive. I’m sorry for the lapse of time. Since I’ve last written in response to your last letter, you asked me when my Birthday is—well it’ just flew by (April 30th). If my memory serves—yours is sometime soon, no? I need a Birthday calendar to write these details down. Well, I’m happy to say that on my Birthday, RYAN and I got engaged to be MARRIED! I think I just got over the realization of it.
I don’t think it’s any surprise for those who knew us—but I can't believe it’s happening.
We’re thinking/planning for May of 1996, so we hopefully can have it at the YOSEMITE Chapel in the Valley. It is our second home after all. Well, that’s the biggest news I have to share.
How are you? Yes, I know we haven’t made it down there to visit you—hopefully later this year. Ryan and I promised to visit his cousin (over a year ago). We’re finally visiting her in Yakima, WA later this month. We’re going to Portland, Yakima, Seattle, San Juan Island...
Take Care and talk to you soon.
Love Carol
This was such wonderful news. I am so happy for Carol and her forthcoming marriage. I already spoke to my mother about it and we will definitely attend her wedding together. I hope it is held at Yosemite National Park. I have never been there and I know it would be a beautiful setting. I guess I will find out if this will happen next year. Time will tell--but for now, I will enjoy the present moment.
It's not that you have to achieve anything, it's that you have to get away from where you are. --Marguerite Duras, THE LOVER

Mr. Jet-Set
“You can’t go through life NOT listening to music.” --Graeme Simsion, THE ROSIE PROJECT, a novel
It was piano recital time for Carrie (Alan’s youngest daughter). And it was held in Malibu. I caught a few photos. One of them is a favorite because I caught her right on-stage, playing the piano. Jack and Gloria attended, as did Susan and her current beau, Gary Laff. Carrie's piano teacher was named BOND. I was kind of envious of that name, given my envy for Mr. Jet-Set Agent 007.
Actress, Lindsay Wagner, was there—in the audience with us-- as I guess her son, Dorian (a year older than Carrie) was playing piano also. Actor, Robert Conrad, who I loved in that 60s series called THE WILD, WILD WEST was there, too. I guess one of his kids was playing piano, too. Anyhow, it was a special event. I am so envious that Carrie plays the piano. I always wished I could play piano. Just like I always wished I could have been a ballet dancer.
That song by TAKE THAT has caught my ear called BACK FOR GOOD. I like when they mention ‘coffee cup’ in the lyrics. And Dorothy Rua, is back, too. She sent four cool cards recently: Coffee cups; a cool, unusual guy riding ice-blocks in Paris, a mermaid girl with a dolphin chasing the light and a couple from yesteryear, enjoying a cup of coffee under a shady tree (or was it afternoon tea?).
Dorothy reminded me that Alan and I saw a cool Broadway Play in NYC last month called INDISCRETIONS (I mentioned it to her in a postcard). Kathleen Turner on-stage was cool to see. She played opposite some unknown actor named JUDE LAW. He actually stood on stage completely naked! That was a surprise--but I guess most actors will do what they need to do to get noticed, right? I was close enough to tell you that he was not circumsised. Ha-ha...
May 6, 1995
Dear Michael,
How quickly time seems to pass. I wanted to reply to your letter and cards a lot sooner and here it is, almost time for your flight to the Bay Area! Hope this reaches you before you board your next plane—Mr. Jet-Set is constantly in-flight these days. Will I be trying to get my next card out before you ‘take off’ for Miami? What a life. We should all be so free...
As I mentioned on the phone, I loved the Black and White card you sent of the girl and guy in the field. Funny, I don’t remember seeing a photographer around when I was leaning over the truck engine and who is the guy lying on the log, watching me from under his hat? I do love the card and wish I had the guts to put it up in my cubicle. I also appreciated the sentence you underlined on the back. I wish all those things were a part of my immediate world. Life can be so simple, why can’t all people allow it to be?
You’ll have to tell me all about Kathleen Turner in her Broadway play, INDISCRETIONS, when we get together. I really enjoy her acting. I’m sure you had a great time in NYC and made sure Alan enjoyed his BIRTHDAY weekend. Sounds like Alan travels even more than you do, is this possible? Ha!
Regarding my personal side, we’ll talk a bit when we’re together, okay? We do have some catching up to do...
Rosemarie and I have been so busy with everyday life. We haven’t had time to get together for fun lately. We are planning a fun evening in about 2 weeks, so that’s something to look forward to. I haven’t even had time to go to Pismo Beach with Jan yet. Let you know when I do.
By the way, Chez Panisse is located on the north side of the University at 1517 Shattuck Ave, between Cedar and Vine. Only the café is open for lunch. How appropriate for us. REALLY looking forward to seeing you. Until then, Keep it Cool...Much Love, Dorothy
Another couple of cards from Dorothy two days later:
Oh Michael,
I would like to see MURIEL’S WEEDING before next weekend, so we can discuss it. I have heard it’s a great movie and, of course, you confirm it. Guess I’ll force myself to watch MERYL and CLINT in Bridges of Madison County when it comes out. I don’t know if I’ll be able to sit through the entire show if they screw up the characters really bad. We’ll see.
As far as things with me, my job is basically just a job. The cast of characters are okay, but I know they all go home at night and crawl back into their pods until morning. I don’t know who they think they’re fooling, but they’re not fooling me. My main concern is that I’ll forget and fall asleep one night and then it’ll be all over for me, too. If you hear a pod is growing in my patio, please head up here and shoot me...or drag me out of there before my eyes shut completely. I had a look at CRIMSON TIDE, mainly because I really like Gene Hackman. Having grown-up with the military all around me I found a few of the scenes unrealistic—other scenes were a bit too predictable. But all in all, it was okay. Funny how I go for long periods without watching a movie at the theater, then I see several in a short span of time.
Anyway, this is the weekend Jan and I are planning on our trip to Pismo Beach. If you feel like surprising me on the beach, that would be wonderful, I’ll keep the CALLA LILLIES fresh, but I’ll have to hunt down that chick that stole my body! I don’t have Jan’s address there but her phone number is 805-773-2023, listed under J. M. Kaiserman.
Also, the toll-free number at my office is 800-624-6094, X2826. Please try it again, it’s supposed to work all over the country, including California. Otherwise, I’m at 510-256-2826.
P.S Your card thanking me for the framed picture of us smelled great. Was it your after shave?
Love, Dorothy
Dorothy keeps me entertained. The others who write me also keep me on-top-of-things. I like to read what’s going on in other parts, down yonder. Life is boring---what?---No Way...only if you make it boring. Everyone has a story and if they don’t--they can make-up a story.
Stories are a way to preserve one’s self. To be remembered. And to forget. Stories come in so many forms: in charcoal, and in song, in paintings, poems, films. And books. --V.E. SCHWAB, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

Enjoying A Picnic
FEAR was like seasickness, it came in great waves, a thunderous beat that drummed in the stomach and made the whole body vibrate. --Marghanita Laski, THE VICTORIAN CHAISE LOUNGE
Mom flew over from Alameda to LA for another weekend. It’s nice to see mom reading, relaxing and/or simply enjoying a picnic with me. It was fun going to see a new Sandra Bullock movie. Mom likes this actress. It was a cute romantic comedy called WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING about a gal who has a second chance at love.
I heard an easy listening song by a singer I’ve never heard of before named Jeff Buckley. The song is called I KNOW IT’S OVER. It’s true---sometimes one has to know when ‘it’s over’. I like his vocals.
It’s been a tough month after a horrible incident last week (April 19th) after a car bomb devastated the Oklahoma City Federal Building. President Bill Clinton recently made a TIME FOR HEALING speech that was quite moving and needed for everyone to hear. Events like this instill FEAR and SADNESS. We need HOPE after the SHOCK. The culprit of this horrible event was some idiot (Timothy McVeigh) who was found guilty and sentenced to death in June 1997; on June 11, 2011 he was executed by lethal injection.
ROB ROY: A biographical historical drama starring Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange.
KISS OF DEATH: A dramatic crime-thriller starring David Caruso, Nicolas Gage, Samuel L Jackson and Helen Hunt.
I wrote letters to Dorothy J Rua and cousin, Carol Lucero. Who will write to me next week?
I’m still working diligently at Charles Schwab & Co. I love counting down my days to the weekend or the next stretch of days where I can get away. It’s important to always have something to look forward to. In the meantime, I listen as there is always something to learn.

In Memory of Patricia Ann Crowley
“It is now that is the present reality and the future is still to come.” --Marghanita Laski, THE VICTORIAN CHAISE LOUNGE
There was an early release here in L.A. of a movie called FRENCH KISS, starring Meg Ryan, Kevin Kline, Jean Reno and Francois Cluzet. I loved it so very much and I’m spreading the word. It’s one of those comedy, drama, romance films. It made Alan laugh, too.
The schoolteacher that I worked with in San Francisco, Pat Crowley, wrote to me again:
April 18, 1995
Hi Michael,
I’ve survived 3-months of rehabilitation. The cast is off now. April 6th was the great unveiling. I couldn’t believe how my foot and ankle looked as I hadn’t seen it in a while. Dry skin, muscle atrophy and a lack of circulation in the ankle. I’m taking physical therapy 3x’s a week for 3 weeks to reactivate tissue. I can’t believe how sensitive the foot area is. Touching it sends tingles of sensation through my body. After four treatments of massaging moments of selected areas my foot is steadily beginning to loosen up and not feel like a stiff heavy extension. I have forgotten how to walk. I still feel like I have a cast on it and am still limping. The therapist said usage of the foot will take time, but will progress slowly. I planned to return to work on May 1st but I’ll have to see how therapy goes next week. I can’t get around in school with my ankle swelling after long periods of standing. Much too difficult. I hope you enjoyed your New York visit. I haven’t been there in a while.
With regard to a reading list for your niece, Ashly. I’ll list a few books when I return to school. I’ve sent this list of Bibliographies of appropriate books for her grade level. Some of these she may have already read but anyway these are some of the students’ favorites:
ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS, LITTLE WOMEN, A SECRET GARDEN, A WRINKLE IN TIME, A WIND IN THE DOVE, A SWIFLY TILTING PLANET, THE LION, THE WITCH and THE WARDROBE; books by Marilyn Sachs: VERONICA GANZ, PETER AND VERONICA, THE BEAR’S HOUSE; Judy Blume books: WATERSHIP DOWN, BIOGRAPHIES OF WOMEN IN HISTORY; MORE CANTERBURY TALES by Homer Price; JOHNNY TREMAIN, Historical Fiction: AMERICAN RED. These should get Ashley searching in the library. I hope some of them will interest her.
Fondly, Pat Crowley
While writing today’s blog now in the year 2021 I did an internet search to find Pat Crowley and was sad to learn of her passing in 2018:
Patricia Ann Crowley
On July 18, 2018, Dr. Patricia Ann Crowley died in South San Francisco. Dr. Crowley was predeceased by her sister Mary Florence, who died on June 2, 2018, her brother Robert Lee, and her parents Nora and Jeremiah Crowley. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Sandra, a niece Jacqueline Hanora, a nephew Brendan Fitzgerald, a grandniece Georgia Grace, and a grandnephew Quinn Fitzgerald. She is also survived by many cousins in the Bay area and in Ireland and England.
Dr. Crowley graduated from Presentation High School and earned her BA from Lone Mountain College. She went on to earn two Master's degrees and a PhD all focused in education. She created and taught a gifted and talented program at Redding Elementary for fifth and sixth graders. Dr Crowley was voted teacher of the year by two organizations: once for the state of California and once for the city of San Francisco. Her passion was being in the classroom, teaching and guiding her students. She looked forward to being with "her kids" every day, and missed not teaching when she finally retired.
Dr Crowley, or Pat as she was known by family and friends, enjoyed traveling during the summer with her sister and they usually ended their trip with a visit to their maternal grandmother in Kerry, Ireland. After she retired, she remained active in her sorority, in her parish community, conducting charitable works, and spending time with her long-time companion, Alex Sola, who also predeceased her.
I loved the sunshine face in this new card that Barbara sent to me. It's bright. It's watching...
April 20, 1995 Dear Michael,
Thanks for the cards, and yes—that Italian envelope is lovely. Thanks.
Is this card familiar to you? Today or tomorrow is solstice and I am itching to celebrate. So, you will be here July 4th? I will call to see if BRIDLE HUT is open.
Oh, about e-mail...I really learned about it while getting my journey together since David suggested we communicate that way, so I found its joy. So, what I need to do is glom a computer and get in line. I’ve found so many of my distant friends are online, so it is a good idea. So, to prepare for this step I am going through a purge of my stuff. Two weeks ago, it was clothes and things; last weekend it was a corner of my room and I’m looking forward to attacking another corner before next weekend. This pack rat is in trouble of transforming its fear of being attacked by some cats.
Oh...soccer game was great...FRENCH KISS was surprisingly good. We’ll see BRAVEHEART soon.
Love, Barbara
And another postcard from Barbara arrived a couple of days later:
24 Apr 95 Michael,
...getting more prepared for my jaunt to FRG—counting the days—went to this MONET Exhibit at the DeYoung Museum with Alice Cofield, Jennifer Peterson and my ex-neighbor, Irene, on 4/15 at noon, a lovely outing; then, drove to 3rd Street for lunch at MAX’s Diner, sat at the window whilst the outside was drenched.
My Birthday was GREAT. It snowed at High Points, pounded with hail and beamed sun shine; drove Redwood Road to Castro Valley to friends for lunch and dinner on Friday—took the tour of TAO HOUSE in Danville, Eugene ‘Neil’s house built 1935-1942 with Alice and my friend, Howard, came by and we walked to the Rose Garden and had dinner, went to the UC Theater and saw MARTHA & ETHEL. April 30th is ‘Turn off your television week”
Love, Barbara

DREAMING OF YOU, Corazon
“Love never dies.” --Alice Munro, OPEN SECRETS in her short story: CARRIED AWAY A shocking thing happened on March 31st. A Latina singer named SELENA was killed by Yolanda Saldivar, her former personal assistant and former fan club president, who had recently been fired for embezzling money from the fan club.
The event was called "Black Friday" by Hispanics worldwide. As a tribute I’ve been listening to her song, DREAMING OF YOU.
I wasn’t even familiar with SELENA or her music until I heard the news of her tragic death at only age twenty-three years old. Too sad for words. In the lyrics of the song she says the word “CORAZON” and it reminds me of my former coworker at Pac Bell, Carla, and my current coworker, Carmen, who both call me “CORAZON” sometimes. Corazon is another way of saying ‘sweetheart’. Alan and I did it again. A beautifully planned long weekend in New York City from April 12th thru April 16th. It was sort-of Alan's post-Birthday trip. Now that we go relatively often, we make good use of our time. I love taking my camera and shooting various things of beauty that many do not seem to notice. I love photographing the people, too. We were amidst crowds in Central Park and Rockefeller Center. I loved how I insisted Alan hide behind a crowd of random people—then I snapped a photo. Find Alan instead of Find Waldo...
We met with Alan’s cousin (also named Alan---but his surname is Shmaruk). I snapped a photo of the two Alan’s chatting along a pathway in Central Park. It looked like a scene from a Woody Allen movie. And if you listened to their conversation it would seem like Woody Allen dialogue. Alan Shmaruk is a real estate attorney. We also went to his office. He’s a really nice guy. He’s dating a woman named, Dawn. It looks like he’ll be marrying her within the next year or two. In fact, that was one of topics of conversation.
"Should I marry her?"
"Yeah, I love her...but..."
Yes, it was such Woody Allen dialogue, listening to two real-life New Yorkers! The Two Alans...
I took more random photos of both Alan and I. I liked the Alan ‘walking on water’ photo, me in front of the TIME WARNER building, the vintage clock outside of the Sun Times Newspaper, me in front of a cool café, Alan inside a hotel bar. It was just random fun photography. There’s so much to see and find in New York City. It’s endless. I look forward to returning. This was a short trip but we sure did do a lot.
When we were at Rockefeller Center I was in envy of the ice skating. I never learned how to ice skate. I remember trying to roller skate but I could never capture that balancing act. And yet, I can ride my bike hands-free. What's with that? Well, it's one of those wishes that never came true---to be able to ice skate like an Olympic figure skater...oh well, at least I can dance.
Upon my return to Los Angeles from New York City I had two letters waiting for me from my Aunt Lela Gallegos-Armijo-Rego:
Dear Michael,
So, how busy have you been? Have you been on any more trips?
We’ll be going to see the girls in May. Donna’s oldest (Danielle) is making her First Holy Communion on Mother’s Day and I have to be there. This will only be the second time I’ll see Donna’s youngest, Sarah. She is seen months now. I can’t wait to see all of them. I miss all of them so very much!
Are you planning to spend Mother’s Day with your mom here?
You know, I heard from CeCe (Cecelia Garcia-Markus) that John and his wife, Sherri, separated. Is this true? This really distresses me because of what Joey’s going through and all of the heartaches over the kids!
We’re having EASTER her with all of the kids who are able to come by...it’s never ALL of them because they have to alternate with the in-laws. For sure, Joey and his three (Joe, Alisha, Cory) and our youngest, Scott, and his two....and our only two granddaughters here are among these five. For me, having the girls here in all their finery makes Easter Sunday complete!
Well, have a blessed EASTER and I’ll be sure and give the girls your regards when I’m up there.
Take care and God Bless, Love, Aunt Lela
Letter #2
Thursday 7:00AM, April 13, 1995
Dear Michael,
What a joy to get news from you. I’m so glad to hear that you experience life to the fullest. You’ve earned every bit of it and you’d always be a son to be very proud of, I’m sure your mom is—for sure!
You’re such a sweet one, too, in that she visits and you make sure she has a great time and that she is as special to you as you are to her.
Boy, talk about a Birthday gift to one’s self—NYC, Miami...that’s the way to do it up. So you didn’t mention years, so how many will that be? 30—what?
I’ll expect a birthday postcard from Florida. Remember, I’m 52 on June 2nd. Where does all of the time go? I can’t believe I’m over 50. I do feel it at times but overall, it’s great.
We haven’t seen MURIEL’S WEDDING yet but will after EASTER for sure.
Is there such a thing as being ‘beyond star struck? I don’t think so—not for me anyway. I’d go ‘ga ga’ if I had the slightest possibility of running into the film stars you’ve mentioned. Whoopi Goldberg! Wow! Did you see BOYS ON THE SIDE? This was a two-hankie movie. She does a great job in it but then I think she’s always great in any movie she makes.
Joey’s oldest (Joe Jr.) is 10 years old today. Wow! Now ai have two grandsons in the double digits age. Oh, what a trauma for me when they’re teenagers. I won’t think of it now. It only makes me want to turn back time to when they were all toddlers! Those were the days!
Oh well, because of the size of our family I still haven the toddlers around but they all live in Washington.
I’m really getting excited now about our visit in May. We got the tickets last week and once I’ve got that done, I really get antsy about time not passing fast enough!
So, I’m confused. Do I send cashews in May or not? What about chocolate covered cashews? Is this double rush?
Keep the notes coming. I sure get a lift in my spirits when I get a card or letter from you.
Take care. Be careful.
God Bless you Always!
Love, Aunt Lela
Reading letters, writing letters...it was my form of escaping. I love knowing other people’s stories. My story will repeat. It's like love---it will go on forever. I sometimes feel I am a reincarnation of someone else in history. Who really knows? Who am I? I think I am just beginning to find out. I should know by the time I'm forty-five. Ha-ha In the meantime, I need to keep returning to New York. I experience so much there in a short span of time. That's it! That's the magic of NYC--and my other form of escape. I'm dreaming of you, New York City. While dreaming of you I will know more about me...
I read, confident that reading would make me a better person. Reading spoke to me through my pride. Music spoke directly to my emotions. --Christopher Bram, SURPRISING MYSELF, a novel

That First Cup of Coffee
"Man's loneliness is but his fear of life." --Eugene O'Neill, Nobel laureate in Literature There’s a song called BACK FOR GOOD by Take That which has caught my ear. I think I like that beginning part when it mentions ‘lipstick marks on a coffee cup’ in the lyrics. There’s something about that first coffee cup. If I get to my office early, I love to take that extra walk for a latte at the COFFEE BEAN, near UCLA. It’s my boost for the morning: that first coffee cup treat.
A CHILL OUT postcard of a new album by JOHN LEE HOOKER was used today to write to Paloma.
4-5-95
Hi Paloma,
Just a note to tell you I love the postcard of LES PYRENEES, LES ANGLES and the snow. Just beautiful.
My mom was visiting 3/15--3/31. I did a TV commercial for the company that I work for, Charles Schwab & Co. They picked me. No big deal...but now I’m a member of the SAG-Screen Actors Guild. Maybe I’ll get a movie part now. Ha-ha.
Michael
Barbara Reynolds wrote me and I had to laugh at the card of the gentleman hiding behind a high stack of buttermilk pancakes:
7 April 95
Dear Mike,
Thank so much for the note. Jan Van Huysum --beautiful notecard. Thanks. Sounds like you are still keeping busy. Glad to hear your mom got a visit with you. I still think of my mom—sentiment which quickly turns to rationalization. Hmm...
Yes, I want to see MURIEL’S WEDDING and WILL. Today I saw ONCE WERE WARRIORS—very powerful film, captivating therapy material. We saw the second half of ANGELS IN AMERICA last Saturday night. It confronts basic reality but not shockingly and almost whimsical. Lucky us.
I now have to mark my calendar: May 6th...this is a TV commercial, correct? So, if I don’t get it that day, I may have a second opportunity? Well, what a thrill.
Speaking of Martin Scorsese I want to see his new product, CUBA.
Thanks for the excuse to write—I need to focus and get my mind in THE NOW. I’ve reserved a ticket roundtrip SF to Dusseldorf May 3-17, a rendezvous with this guy I met in VA last year. His plan is to be in Europe a year and spend 2 years there a while ago, so I truly feel I’ll be in good hands. Now I’m getting myself in shape, very difficult to not get excited.
Alice and I did the tour of TAO HOUSE, Eugene O’Neill’s home in Danville, CA on the edge of Las Trampas Park. This is a hidden treasure, since the road to his home is private and the only way to get a tour is to call ahead and book it at either 10AM or 12:30PM Wednesday-Saturday and only eleven passengers allowed. O’Neill wrote 7-plays in 7-years 1935-1942. He left their home partly due to the gas rationing during World War II. Needless to say, well you know...a good spot on this sweet earth. Later,
Love,
Barbara
And I wrote Paloma another postcard using a Barry D Marcus photo postcard:
Dear Paloma,
I loved the photos you sent me. They came out so nice. Your dad and Alexandre look good. Monique looks exactly as I remember her. She looks great. Oh yeah—you are ‘eye catching’ too.
Glad you enjoyed the songs on tape. I like Flamenco tunes, too. I’ll see what I can do next time.
I heard MADONNA with Patrick Hernandez (BORN TO BE ALIVE) but I don’t know who he is.
I hadn’t heard about the French town in San Diego but I heard about the new French Library in Paris.
How was Edouard’s visit from Albuquerque? Looks like the DISNEYLAND PARIS trip won’t happen anytime soon. I’m going to New York 4-13—4-17 and MIAMI from 5-27 thru 6-4 for sure.
More Later,
Love,
Michael Armijo
Another few cards received from DOROTHY RUA this week...
4-9-95
Dear Michael,
Not all things are within our (one person’s) control and I realize this, so I hope the additional support will be there when it’s needed.
I’m sorry I couldn’t seem to write earlier. You have remained in my thoughts, as always, and re-reading your recent cards I’ve been carrying in my purse have helped lighten my load at moments I needed them most.
Your trip to Palm Springs sounded wonderful. Just what you needed, just what I need! February...has it been that long? I feel bad all over again about not writing.
About that ‘MORE HAPPINESS IN 1995’ comment—I didn’t think you were implying I was unhappy. I thought you were reading between the lines in my cards and KNEW! Funny how I sometimes see things from different angles only because I’m coming from MY place. Anyway, YES, let’s hope for more happiness in ‘95 and beyond.
Do I like JAZZ? I didn’t grow up with JAZZ but I have come to enjoy and appreciate JAZZ. Not growing-up in New York, the music doesn’t make me feel like it’s bringing me “HOME”, but I do enjoy it. I especially like the saxophone.
Have you become a Big Brother of LA yet? How fun and rewarding that will be for you—and how fortunate the boy/girl will be to have you to share time, activities, etc. with. I remember what a positive influence you had on the students at that school you spent time at before moving to Southern California.
I want you to know how much I appreciated the photo of your NORMAN ROCKWELL painting. Do I like it! I think it’s GREAT! Maybe because I can relate to those two-women enjoying a break. The scene is so real, but then all of his paintings are and that’s why we all love them so.
A Favorite custom is so sensual and natural. I’d love to have that relaxing custom as a part of my life.
The job is okay. I have to be honest, best part is that it includes an income, benefits and an 8-minute commute. If I decide to put anything personal up around me I have a cubicle wall. I can put your cards on this wall. Only the really HOT ones since the Japanese are so very conservative! Ha-ha. They would just die if I put up MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL. And, of course, I’d have to be let go—the fallen woman that I would appear to be!
Haven't’ done much lately, but I did see JUST CAUSE some time ago and I enjoyed it. Familiar theme but Sean Connery is always wonderful. Also, back in February (?) Rosemarie won free tickets to TOMMY T’s, so a group of us friends went to see Kevin Hughes. Provided me with much needed laughter, great sexual jokes, of course!
So, are you off to NYC, Boston, Palm Springs or Paris? No matter, surprise me with a card and have lots of fun. I appreciate and LOVE YOU, too! Dorothy
Her comments about my unpredicted travels made me smile given that NYC is in the cards soon and the MIAMI escape in late May has me excited. How did she know? I feel a need to get in-shape. It’s an effort that never stops but it’s important to be ahead of the game. It’s necessary to be strong versus weak.
It was Sunday and I decided to type Paloma a letter. She’s on my mind this week and I felt guilty that I only wrote brief postcards, so I had better write more or she might get on my case about it.
April 9, 1995, Sunday Evening
Dear Paloma,
How goes it? I was in the mood to use the MacIntosh computer for a quick letter and decided to drop you a few more lines—not that I’ve been dropping very many lines lately. Alas, time does fly when one is working, enjoying life (or at least trying to).
I’m listening to music as I write. It’s windy outside, yet the sun is out. I may be going to see a movie later. Today was chore day. Speaking of movies, if you haven’t seen MURIEL’S WEDDING yet—Go see it! It’s full of fun and surprises. It takes place in Australia and I hear fi you visit there today it’s like the 1970s.
PHOTO: MURIEL'S WEDDING
I have some good Hollywood-related gossip. As I think I’ve told you before, I’ve taken a walk in this Pacific Palisades neighborhood and have run into Whoopi Goldberg and her husband and Sydney Pollack (he directed movies like THE FIRM and TOOTSIE).
Anyway, last night when I was returning home a street was blocked off with many police around. I learned from on officer that the President (Yes, BILL CLINTON) had a just arrived for a Democratic Fundraising Dinner ($50,000 per plate). Yes, it was a bit of a surprise but I was even more surprised when I learned whose house where the benefit was taking place—none other than the likes of another famous film Director. Yes! Steven Spielberg is my neighbor! Needless to say, I will be taking more walks and maybe I’ll actually run into him.
Oh...I’m beyond being star-struck having lived in LA for the last 5 years. I saw Goldie Hawn driving home to her house (also here in Pacific Palisades) just two days ago. After a while it seems like you've run into so many celebs that you realize that they are just like any other normal person and they wish they could go places and not be so noticed.
As far as vacations go—I mentioned in a recent postcard that I will be in NYC from April 12-17 and that will be a great escape. I always make the best of my trips to NYC. My birthday is on Friday (May 26th) and I am not wasting anytime because I will be flying to Miami, FL on 5/27 and return to LA on 6/4.
Work is the same. It’s become somewhat routine. I can’t believe I’ve been there for 3 years. Can you? Time sure does fly.
I wish I could do a painting. It’s in the back of my mind but something always seems to come up. Oh yeah, on May 10th I am going to an AIDS PROJECT LA fundraiser that should be absolutely FUN-TASTIC because it’s a Fashion Show put on by the famous designer Gianfranco Ferre. Have you heard of him? I’m sure you have. Anyway, he’ll be there along with who knows who else. And the best part—the appetizers, desserts that should be mouth wateringly scrumptious. I guess I’ll need a major aerobics class for the next month after the event.
My mom came to visit for about 10 days (the end of March). It was great to see her. She fills me in on what’s going on up there a lot of the time. She has a good time coming to visit here. I try to make sure of that.
I love cashews. Keep them away from me.
Do you have news for me? How’s the family?
I think I’ll cut this one a little short. Just want you to know that you are often in my thoughts! Later.
Love,
Michael J Armijo

YOU HURT MY FEELINGS
No one said anything, which didn’t mean there was nothing to say. We didn’t want to talk about it. --Nelson DeMille, THE LIONS GAME
It’s nice to have Alan and Gloria back in town. I received one more postcard from Gloria that she sent me while she was in Rome, Italy. Her words were simple, but thoughtful.
Hi,
We have been having a marvelous time. Sightseeing, walking, eating, hopping and just having fun. Miss you, Love, Gloria
Gloria never stops. Now she was all set to have her party at her new pad in the SEA COLONY building. I gifted her a CAT IN A WINDOW painting that she loved. Her party included my mom who was here for the weekend in addition to some of Gloria’s other friends like her neighbors in her condo building and Elaine Hilliard (from her gym) among others. Alan’s accountant, Cathy Imai, was there with her husband, Trevor. Alan’s longtime friend, Herb Braha, was there. Art K (Alan’s real estate partner) was there, too. It was festive. We all mingled. Alan’s brother, Richard and his wife, Leslie, were there but there was some friction between Alan and his brother (there always has been). Overall, the Friday evening went smoothly. Gloria was dressed in a pretty blue color and the sunset was as beautiful as could be.
A few days later, Gloria wrote to me on this Paul Cezanne card of his work, THE BLUE VASE:
I know I have let you know how I feel about you—that not only do I love you but also like you. You are one of the finest, nicest persons I have ever been fortunate to meet.
You have enriched my life enormously and I bless the day that circumstances brought you into my life.
Thank You very much for helping make my party the huge success it was. Also, thanks a heap for the painting. Every time I look at it, I will know the love it brings.
Lots of lots of Love,
Gloria
The following day was April 1. It was Alan’s 43rd Birthday and the big surprise was that I wrapped ‘43’ presents for him. He was so astonished and happy. I know he was. It was extraordinary to see him there surrounded by his gifts. I wonder which gift was his favorite. I guess I’ll have to ask him.
Our work routines began to blend in after the weekend. I began keeping things inside my mind but now that Alan was back, I was able to explore and discuss. Mom went home and my Aunt Lela sent me a sweet couple of cards:
You’re such a joy for me, hearing from you always lifts my spirits. In case I forget to get a card off for EASTER be sure and have a joyful one. We love you and when our house sells, we’ll talk to you about investing for us.
Take Care,
God Bless,
Aunt Lela
On her separate postcard Aunt Lela wrote:
What a pleasant surprise hearing from you on this well-deserved holiday. Sounds like you really enjoyed yourself. So glad you did. You know we’ve been there, too. Great fun as I remember. Welcome back to the States. I’m sure you’re home by now.
Love,
Aunt Lela
We all go through our moods and sometimes I take things out on Alan. He is as sensitive as am I. We all tend to release our anxieties on the ones we love. Alan reminded me of his sensitivity when he left this card for me. I must remember and try to act with more kindness.
I Love You Very Much. I’m also very, very sensitive about everything: coffee, my body, my looks and YOU.
I’m very upset after you make me feel very bad. I’m sorry but I take what you say seriously. Please understand me and what makes me tick. I need your love, understanding and positive reinforcement, lots of it! This card is great, isn’t it?
See you in NY,
Love,
Alan
Alan’s card reminded me to always say YOU HURT MY FEELINGS whenever someone hurts your feelings. It’s so important to do so because many people persist and they do not know. Say it: “You Hurt My Feelings” whenever necessary.

Such A Way With Words
“...the idea is, if you have a weakness, fight AGAINST IT.” --Calder Willingham, END AS A MAN
Not much has changed since last week but I’m looking forward to March 27th and driving to LAX to pick-up Alan and Gloria.
While Alan and I moved—temporarily--from our Marina Del Rey house to Pacific Palisades after the earthquake Gloria did the same. She left her condo in Santa Monica at 7th and San Vicente for an apartment at SEA COLONY near the beach. She is planning to have a party next week on March 31st, so that is a little something to look forward to. My mom will be visiting also—so she will attend.
Alan sent a couple postcards that I received this week. One was from the ALFIO Ristorante in Milan, Italy. The meal that is pictured looked yummy. Alan wrote:
Michael,
This is an example of every lunch and dinner that we had in ITALY. Perfect—but the only thing missing was looking, talking and being with YOU.
Love,
Alan
Alan’s other card was an artsy one from the Sistine Chapel at THE VATICAN. He has such a way with words that makes me miss him more. His words—though short—tell me that he misses me a lot, too.
Michael,
Sistine Chapel is the greatest. I think this is by MICHELANGELO---except the DAVID, my greatest work was not there—but I do have MICHAEL.
Love,
Alan
My life feels less exciting with Alan gone. From his postcards I get the impression that he is anxious to return to me. I’m trying to get by without his presence but it’s not easy. He is always talking and adding more to my days. I look forward to his return. His 43rd Birthday is right around the corner and I have a big surprise brewing for him. I cannot wait to see his face when he witnesses my surprise on April 1st.
I must not let myself get carried away by emotion; I must write all this down carefully! I experienced the same surprise and the same exhilaration I felt when I first entered that room. --ADOLFO BIOU CASARES, The Invention of Morel

Enjoying My Solitude
“...It is just the pressure. It’s not a sin. We pray that our minds won't turn towards terrible things but sometimes they do and it is beyond our control.” --Ann Patchett, BEL CANTO, a novel
I have free time on my hands because Alan—being the kind son that he is—planned a trip for his mom (GLORIA) to ITALY from March 15th through March 27th. I know they’ll have a great time. What a wonderful 70th Birthday present for Gloria. I’m sure it will be fun to hear about their adventures upon their return. Meanwhile, I get to do my routine work at Charles Schwab & Co. from 8-4pm and I’ve added extended bike riding time in and around the Pacific Palisades. I also have my writing, reading and sleeping time. While Alan is gone it is a good test of my finding balance and enjoying my solitude.
I received a floral card from Pat Crowley (the teacher in San Francisco that I assisted back in 1989). Her letter reminded me to never fall down—if you can help it:
March 16, 1985 Hi Michael,
Good to hear from you. I don’t envy you having to make a move while your residence is being repaired. So many Californians have lost their homes or have so much water damage from the recent rains. Our state has certainly been through much during the past 5 years.
I enjoyed Asia also but if I had a choice between going to Europe or Asia my first choice would be Europe. I guess it’s because of our roots. I’ve worked with the Asian population for most of my career and am very familiar with their culture and philosophy.
I had ‘33’ students this school year. Quite a few more boys than girls. Needless to say, I haven’t seen any of them since January 13th. The next day (January 14th) which was Saturday I was carrying groceries upstairs from the basement at my mothers’ home when I turned around to retrieve more bags, missed three steps completely, flew into space and landed on the cement floor with my feet bent under my body. I fractured both of my ankles. The left one wasn’t damaged like the right one which has a metal plate, screws and pins holding it together. That will be permanent unless I decided to have those materials removed in about 2 years, but it would mean surgery and going under anesthesia again.
I had a splint in my right foot for 5 weeks. I had to use my left foot to hop around with and the aid of a walker because I couldn’t put any weight on my right foot. I had to call 911 to be transported to the Emergency Room at Presbyterian Hospital for a week for Physical Therapy. I’m now in a walking cast which was applied February 23rd. I started out using my walker and gradually putting weight on my right foot. I’m at the stage where I’m bearing weight for longer periods of time without assistance. The cast comes off, hopefully on April 1st. Then I’ll have to deal with my ankles and muscles. I’ll probably have to have physical therapy to build up strength in my foot. Life is full of little surprises.
I’ve left myself busy working in various academic projects, writing grants, reading scholarship applications from City College, reading, writing and watching selected class videos.
I’ve only been out of the house to visit my orthopedist. I can hardly wait to be able to go out to a good San Francisco restaurant or the theater again. I do not know for sure when I’ll return to teaching. Maybe the end of April or beginning of May if everything works out all right. Take Care, Pat Crowley.
And former coworker and friend from Pac Bell Yellow Pages, Reed Campbell, never fails to make me laugh. He sent a card of these naked Roman warriors in a forest with swords and armor and Reed wrote: A TYPICAL WEEKEND EVENT IN MINNEAPOLIS! He’s always full of surprises. I am sometimes taken aback.
March 17, 1995 Dear Michael,
A belated Happy St. Patrick's Day to you. I was so very glad to get your card. I was a bit afraid my Xmas Card went too far. I do get carried away now and again. We all enjoyed our Las Vegas visit and am glad you did also.
Deanna and I are flying to Venice, Italy on June 30th for a few days and then a 7-day cruise of the Greek Islands, then back to Florence for 2-days and then home.
We come to San Francisco on May 18th for my son’s graduation from Sonoma State at last. And back to home base for a while. I had looked forward to seeing you in Vegas but maybe another time. We were in San Francisco in December and I saw a number of old co-workers. Vivian Adams is now in-charge of the whole place. She took JoAnne Early’s place. Wow! It will be a change for the better I’m sure. Also, I saw Glenda in the sales office. No one seems very happy in sales!
The weather has been great this week but more snow is predicted soon. It’s all melted at present which is fine with me.
Hope you can make out my scrawl. Drop a line when you have time.
Question? Why do all the figures on this card remind me of YOU? It’s all in my imagination and secret desire.
Love, Reed
P.S. Include your phone #
Alan already sent me a few postcards from his European trip with Gloria. Gloria sent me one as well (from Venice). Alan sent one form Florence (at the HOTEL VILLA MEDICI) and Venice. I loved the stamps on the cards.
From Gloria:
Love,
Gloria and Alan
From Alan:
Friday 5:20PM
It was great talking to you. You will love this place. Great wine, food, sights, water and people. We can get lost here and never be found by anyone. A gondola boat ride, dinner on the canal or just a walking tour. Let’s go!
Love,
Alan

Meanwhile, I’m riding my bike to songs like RUN AWAY by Real McCoy and EVERLASTING LOVE by Gloria Estefan. And I’m the king of the branch at Charles Schwab & Co.
