The Winning Jackpot

Dear Mike,  Got your 4th of July letter weeks ago.  Sorry—got into the circle:  Should I Should I???  Still looking at buying my home, a condo here in Berkeley, so I spend much time with a realtor looking at a place for sale by a Pac Bell employee but I’m just not sure.  Then, last week my realtor found another unit in the building available, so we looked at it last week.  I wanted to see it again last weekend with Alice but the lock box jammed, so because of a pending strike it is perhaps best that I be very patient.  I like several things in Unit 4 that I did not like in Unit 3.  I will keep you posted.

Did you recognize the 140 New Montgomery Building on the right pictured on this card?  Yep...just behind the new SF MOMA-Museum of Modern Art.  I’m not crazy about this photo.  It’s so flat but Alice works for Palm Press you know, so I have to share her gifts.  Alice as here tonight and we watched THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS.  Did you see it?  Glenn Close and Meryl Streep good.  Oh, I want to see BRAVEHEART and will need to make a special point that WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING Was good.  Yes, I would recommend it.  Very good heart.  I saw APOLLO 13, of course, Good, Good and TWO GIRLS which was so nice...and LOVE OF HUMAN REMAINS on the 4th which I knew you would find interesting.

Doug Widger-Owalls worked in SF.  He was probably in Residential Services at 633 Folsom, then went to Business at 370 Third Street.  He is now in Oakland training for our job.  We have been much too busy. I have a very deep desire for two weeks' vacation or strike—but I know many folks don’t want a strike.  They want to keep the money coming in and it would be best for me to make the offer on the Unit 4 unit.  Well, you know I love vacation.

Are you terribly lonely with Alan at COFFEE COLLEGE?  I do experience that loneliness and depression wishing I had David to cuddle with.  Alas, not now, so it is good to walk.  It’s good to write.  Good to eat watermelon.  Ok, it is summer and we have a had a few more heat waves but now have the cool AM’s and warm lovely afternoons.

THANK YOU.  I love the red roses.  Thanks so much!

The egg on the end will be next summer solstice since I learned too late this year.  I’ll try and remind you.  Glad you got the Salzburg view.  I loved that experience.

So, yes, I am interested in buying stock and find it so difficult to make calls during business hours.  Would it work for me to send you a check or should I call you at work earl AM?  Or do you know the name of my local discount brokerage firm?  I love your advice.  Love your dentist sticker.  I’m getting fillings replaced.  I have a good dentist.  Later, Love, Barbara

Alan sent another card, this time with a young cowboy on the cover:

July 26, 1995

Michael,

By the time you get this I’ll be home (maybe).

just got hung-up on by you because you were tired.  You insulted me.  You upset me!  Just because you’re tired doesn’t give you the right to be mean to me.  I wonder why I continue to call you (only reason is I’m HOH-Head Over Heels).  I guess I have to accept your hang-ups!

Today, I worked from 7-3PM.  I worked out for an hour, shopped at Roche-Bobois and then went to dinner with J. Morton.  Had a drink and listened to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA music.

Wowzer!  Mom called me on July 27th

My Grandmother won THE WINNING JACKPOT on the nickel machine at the Treasure Island Casino.  She won $257,913.00.  She has the choice of receiving the whole jackpot or getting paid in annual installments of about $13,000 for the next 20 years.  Uncle Raymond (Mom’s brother) is there and that’s what he recommended to avoid having to pay taxes on the full lump.  That’s amazing.  My grandmother Mary Genevieve Leyba-Lucero deserves every penny!  Good for her!

I called Alan and told him the news.  He loved the story about Grandma and The Winning Jackpot.   He had just written me a postcard:

Michael,

I just thought about how great our weekend in Seattle was...it was one of the best weekends we’ve ever had.  I hope that this weekend turns out the same.

I Love You,

Alan

I also received a card of CYCLISTS today from Dorothy Rua.  The card was titled BREAKAWAY and that reminded me of that favorite bike movie I love called BREAKING AWAY (1979):

7-27-95

Dear Michael,

By the time I had received your letter/cards earlier this month I had already seen the movie THE POSTMAN (IL POSTINO).  Had to mark my calendar.  First time I’ve seen a movie before you!  Have you seen it yet?  Went to Albany to watch it and loved it.  So much MORE than a man falling in love with a woman.  The impact the poet and the postman had on each other's lives was so strong, especially the impact on the postman.  I felt so much emotion throughout the movie and did not expect it to have the ending it did.  When you see it—do let me know your thoughts.  I’ve thought about it often throughout the past few weeks.

Another movie I saw in Berkeley that I really enjoyed was THE PRIEST.  Really good, especially if you can relate to the catholic religion and all its SINS.  Subject matter was handled/done very well.  The acting was good and I would recommend it.  Have you seen it?

Other movies I’ve seen recently are PULP FICTION (in Berkeley finally) ...a bit more blood than was necessary but entertaining.  John Travolta was okay but didn’t deserve an Academy Award nomination.  What’d you think?

APPOLLO 13 was very well don and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I always like Ed Harris and it was interesting to learn the details of that particular space mission.  Wasn’t that ‘barf’ scene realistic?  Saw LEGENDS OF THE FALL on video.  Romantic and entertaining.  Watched it at Rose Marie’s house while eating chicken wings and drinking wine.  Her son and daughter were out of town at camp, so we could really relax and put our feet up.

Rose Marie tells me her kids are out of town at another camp in early August, so we have to plan a fun night on August 4th.  Wonder what we’ll come up with?

On August 5th I have a BBQ picnic to attend.  There will be swimming but you can bet I won’t be wearing that neon pink thong I’m rumored to have hidden somewhere!  Only place I’d have a thong swim suit hidden is in my dreams.

On August 12th there’s a VALENT company ‘HOE DOWN’ BBQ at some big spread in Lafayette.  There will be country dancing (which I’m not a fan of), poker tables and pool tables. I may go for the food and maybe some pool but I will have to get my tattoo sometime between now and then...I don’t keep cowboy/cowgirl attire in my closed tub I’m sure told I can come with just the hat and boots.  Too bad I don’t have the guts.  Ha-ha

Love, Dorothy

Alan returned from Seattle.  It was a joy to seem him back where he belongs.  He knows how to make stellar coffee drinks now; however, this franchise business seems like more work than it’s worth.  I’m not so sure that he and Art will actually go through with it.

As planned, Jack and Gloria accompanied us to the UNIVERSAL STUDIOS APLA event on July 29th.   It was fun nibbling at the different TASTE OF LA food booths but this event wasn’t as glamourous as some of the other APLA events we’ve attended.

My niece, Ashley wrote.  Her letter capped off the week in a splendid way.  She has a lot on her mind and it shows in her writing.  She writes as if there is always a lot of drama going on (because there is):

Dear Uncle Mike,

Thanks for the pictures.  And if you are wondering what happened to your necklace, Grandma thought it looked like a girls’ necklace.  Also, my mom said, “You should get clasps and not just tie it.”  Sorry.

Did Grandma win any money in Las Vegas?  I’ve been taking swim lessons, so have Ally and Holly.   Holly passed level 3 but Ally is still on that level.  Margie, our swim teacher is going to Dallas, so we are having make-ups on Monday and Tuesday.  Holly and Ally can’t go because they have school.  But I can!

I have been playing softball at Leydecker Park.

Krusi Park killed us but Washington got killed by us.

I have to go now.  Patsy, I think she is Jamie’s mom called me.  Mom is taking everyone to get Holly’s haircut.  She is watching Alex and all of them.  She thinks she broke her angle.  Mom better hurry up!

Love, Ashley

A Deep Thinker

“I have to be alone.  I can’t let myself be distracted by anything at this time.  I’m at the final dip of the dance, the forbidden stroke.  If you hear me laugh suddenly with the weirdest laugh in the world, a laugh that not even I know what it might be like, don’t
be alarmed...” --Ramon Gomez de la Serna, EIGHT NOVELLAS, from THE MASTER OF THE ATOM novella

Alan wrote me a series of five postcards and I loved them all.   Many of them reminded me of PARIS.  One was from a restaurant we loved in Paris at 41, Rue De Lille called LE TELEGRAPHE.

'Remember--one of our great moments.  I Love You so much and Miss you even more.  This postcard coupon is good for a French Dinner!'

One was of a painted Paris Street scene that included a Patisserie/Boulangerie, of course.

'I Love Paris in the Springtime.  I Love Paris with you anytime.  I love Michal all the time.  Let's keep finding the time to enjoy all of our great moments and make it through everything else--just thinking about how much we love each other.  Love, Alan'

One was of a picturesque aerial view of the cute Paris town known as CERET.  We loved it there.  It’s where most of the Paris cherries come from.

'Remember true love--you told me to leave my shoes here but we did have the best chocolate croissant ever.  Remember the meat: LE CHEVRE that was served for dinner:  Total Cholesterol.  I want to get another taste of that croissant!  I Love you...next Saturday is approaching.'

Alan included a Tazza de la Luna advertisement of a Café.  Alan is very much into coffee these days.  I’m becoming better at tasting good coffee versus bad coffee.

Alan found a MICHAEL, MIKE postcard, for me, too.  It defined my name and I found that rather fascinating:

Michael:  Hebrew meaning “who can be like GOD”.

Michael is often quiet and thoughtful; concerned about his surroundings and the environment.  Sometimes he can seem hard to understand, but this is simply because he is a deep thinker.  He will never react rashly.

I intercepted a postcard that Gloria sent to Alan while he was staying at the Alexis Hotel in Seattle, WA.  She wrote ‘Save this postcard for Michael, it’s a famous painting’.

Gloria wrote to Alan from MIAMI on this postcard painting by CANALETTO:

Hi Love,

This postcard brought back so many beautiful memories.  Our fun gondola rides!!!

All is well here—now besides heat and humidity we have the rain.

After my workout I went to RASCAL HOUSE and had my 3-way cereal.  Mmm good.

Love and Miss You,

Mommy & Jack

Alan gave me another 7/20 Happy Anniversary card:

You get the rose, I get the man WITH THE HELMET, you!

A few days late, I know—but I Love you.  I wanted to wish you a Happy Anniversary:  68 Months.  I’m mad for you.  To renew 68-months.  It goes like this:  Lots of Happiness, Love, Sex, Good times, Travel, Restaurants, 2-houses, 2-apartments, sex, love, great kissing.  I’m getting turned-on writing this card.  A few fights—but it’s great making-up.

IBM is 101 ¼.  MSFT is 94 ½.  MU is 57 ¼.  INTC is 65.

Until Friday at 8:45...

Love You,

Alan

Alan will be coming back from Seattle very soon.  Meanwhile, I’m doing my usual 8AM-4PM work routine at Charles Schwab & CO.   Alan wrote again:

7/21/95

Michael,

I tried to talk to you but you wanted to sleep instead.  So, I'll talk to you this way.

Art and I went to dinner at a local restaurant.  I ate steak and a caser salad with red wine.  I was bad for the first time.  We then visited Sheila’s new story which opened today.  Business looked so-so.

I’m home now and thinking about next week at the same time when we’ll be reunited.  It’s great to be so in love with you.  You’re my true love.

It’s Saturday and writing time....so, for Paloma:

Dear Paloma,

I'm doing a little nude sunbathing today because I'm home alone.

I saw an old movie that was re-released from the 1960's called BELLE DU JOUR.  It was good.  I didn't know Catherine Deneuve was married to Martin Scorcese (I meant Marcello Mastroianni--Haha).  She's just gorgeous.

Also, I found this article yesterday about your dreamboat, Kurt Russell.  I thought you might like the story.

It’s relaxing here today listening to music.  I may go running later.  How’s Jonathan and Alexandre and your ma and pa?

Alan’s in Seattle.  He returns on 7/28.  Then, on 7/29 we are going to the Annual Evening event benefitting APLA: AIDS Project Los Angeles at Universal Studios.  They’ll have a silent auction and all kinds of free food in little booths from various restaurants.  It’s lots of fun.  Besides Alan and I—Gloria and her husband, Jack, are going with us.  It should be fun.  Last year, Jackie Collins was there (Joan Collins’ sister who writes all of those gossip novels).

I always recognize everyone.  Two weeks ago, I saw Diane Keaton while dining with Alan, Jack an Gloria at an Italian Restaurant in West Hollywood called PANE VINO.  Gloria had no fear.   After I told her she’s famous for the movie LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR, Gloria went up to her and told her, “I loved you in LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR”.  She also exchanged a few more friendly words and Diane was thrilled and happy to meet Gloria.   I guess I better go running now.

Later, Love You, Michael

I wrote to mom, also:

July 22, 1995, Saturday 6PM

Dear Mom,

Here are some June 95 memory photos.  I sent a select few to Ashley and Holly, too, from when you were all visiting.

I love you.  Don’t worry about a thing.  I’ll always be there for you.

I’m exhausted.  I went running for about an hour.  I’m listening to piano music now and having a Diet Dr. Pepper to calm me down.

By the time you get this Las Vegas will be a memory.  I hope you had fun.  I want to hear all about it.

Love You,

Michael

Counting the days for Alan’s return for Seattle but I’m always pleased when I find a card from him.  This one depicted a classic set of stairs in the Montmartre area of PARIS:

July 24, 95

Michael,

This card is appropriate for your long run up the steps on Saturday.  I’d rather be walking these steps with you in Montmartre, France.  It’s great that you have enough energy to do all of that exercise.  Maybe you could do it more often.  That would be good for you.

It’s too bad you refused to take my call on Saturday night by disconnecting the phone.  Next time, all you have to do is leave me a message saying, ‘please all me tomorrow, I want to sleep’.  I’m sorry for being so jealous but after 2-weks I wonder what you’re up to.

After all, you’re 32, great looking and in great demand, so why shouldn’t I worry?

I know I’m a pain but I do care very much!

Get Leaner

“Break from what you know and you will know more.” --as heard in the HK-China 2013 film, THE GRANDMASTER

Here I am in the helmet photo.  Alan likes it but all I see is FAT.  I’m having coffee in Seattle but I am refraining from the chocolate croissants and walking a lot, so that will help me to trim down and get leaner Staying in-shape is a continuous effort.  It doesn’t just happen.  I will diligently work on this!   If you live too much of the good life the weight comes on easily, so I am to get leaner.  I have to make exercise and working out an actual part of the good life.

Alan seems to be having fun in Seattle but I’ll be arriving there on the 15th, so I’ll be able to check out things first-hand.  I’m excited to try SBC-Seattle's Best Coffee in Seattle.  Alan wrote again:

July 11, 1995, DAY 3

Michael,

I miss you so much.  I just finished talking to you and wished that I owned MSFT and MOT (Microsoft and Motorola).  A little late, huh?  You’re always so RIGHT with your stock market predictions.  It’s amazing.  You don’t really know how much you really know.

Art and I saw two STARBUCKS stores that were built like expensive restaurants.  This whole thing is getting very complicated and I’m beginning to understand how much work it really is.  I just am getting worried about the whole thing.

Do you like this card?  CONGO was a great 3-hour drive audio book from Key West to Miami.  It proves that 3 hours with you in a car beats a movie.  Marketing made the movie work.  Marketing is what lacks at SBC right now.  That’s the one major problem.

Love,

Alan

And Alan’s daughter, Lauren, sent me another card from University of Michigan at Ann Arbor:

7/12/95

Dear Mikey,

Hi.  I’m sorry I haven’t written in a couple of days.  I know how excited you get when you get mail.  Oh, my mom sent me this stationery.  Isn’t it cool?

What’s up?  Anything going on lately?  I miss you lots and lots.

I talked to my dad last night and I don’t think he’s having fun in Coffee College!  But at least he can make us mochas and espressos when he comes back.

Thanks so much for the computer card.  It’s so cool.  Are you having fun with AOL-American Online?  So, when are we going to the MADONNA concert?

It’s pretty good here.  We went rock climbing last night and it was so hard.  Oh my!   Did I get a workout?   It wasn’t actual climbing on the mountains though.  It was in a climbing gym.  We’re going to Chicago this weekend and new people are coming on Monday.  I can’t wait; hint-hint.

I Love You,

Lauren

I arrived in Seattle and I was excited to take pictures as you can see.  I wrote to mom, using a card of a guy who is swamped with paperwork.  I also sent a souvenir gift:

July 15, 1995

Dear Mom,

To err is human.  To really screw up, you need a computer!

This is why MICROSOFT is a long-term hold.  You’re right...better wait until it is $150 per share. Ha-ha

MICROSOFT headquarters is right here in Seattle, WA.

I didn’t have a postcard stamp, only regular 1st class stamps, so I had to find you a card to use this 1st class stamp.  I hope you like it.

Here’s a token gift: “A” for ARMIJO coasters for you from Seattle.

Love You,

Michael

I included a postcard in her card:

July 15, 1995

Dear Mom,

I can’t believe I made it to Seattle!  It was so easy and so ‘spur of the moment’.

Because of this visit I have an idea:  Let's you and I go to Hawaii in October to Shawn’s wedding!  Let’s not tell them that we’ll be there and it’ll be a pleasant surprise.  What do you say?  We’ll talk when I return.

Seattle is a little bit like Napa, Lake Tahoe and San Francisco in different spots—and like Sacramento, too in a way.  The coffee is good, especially Seattle’s Best Coffee.

Have fun in Vegas with Grandma and your bro (Raymond) and sis (Betty).

Love, Michael

Alan liked the Kirkland, WA area and I was telling him that my Aunt Lillian had lived there with her husband for a while.  He was there because of work.   The Seattle residents get a lot of rain so when the sun comes out they go out in droves.  I witnessed that.

I had fun touring around Seattle with Alan.  We visited obscure neighborhoods.  We took in some cool views from the landmark Space Needle.  We schmoozed with Alan's real estate partner, Art, who is going to Coffee College right now on this potential franchise venture with SBC.   Art's friend, Todd, was around, too.  He seems nice enough but I don't know him very well.

I took photos of the Pikes Market and the Post Alley and any bikes I could find.   I found a cool tree I liked and I had Alan take a photo of me in front of it.

Alan wrote me another card.   Parts of it made me laugh:

Michael,

Want to play football or put your helmet on and let's play General?  I hope when you look at me you feel like you've got someone like him.  That's how I feel when I look at you.

Today was not a good stock day.  MSFT $102, IBM $107, MU $60, INTC 73 1/2.  The support levels for these stocks are:  MSFT $91; IBM $97; MU $54; INTC $63.  They're worthy of a buy there!

COFFEE COLLEGE

“Each challenge leads to a higher peak.” --as heard while watching the 2013 HK China film, THE GRANDMASTER

Alan’s 15-year-old daughter, Lauren, had the opportunity for a summer semester in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  It’s called the SUMMER DISCOVERY at University of Michigan.  She wrote me from Couzens Hall, where she is staying:

7-5-95

Dear Mikey,

Hi!  I’ve finally decided to write people back and guess what?   You’re the first one.  I just learned that they sell stamps in the office downstairs, so now I can send mail.  I’m sure you’re going to be very happy upon receiving this letter.  Thanx so much for all of your postcards.  It’s nice to know people miss me.

Okay, here’s the scoop...I’m having a great time.  Oh yeah!  A 23-year-old picked up on me. The guys outside our program are a lot better.  Don’t worry.  I didn’t like the 23-year-old; but yesterday, I met this one guy that was in my program and he’s nice.  Just as a friend though.  Him...and a couple of other people are the only cool ones here.  I made one good friend and her name is Jamie.  She’s really sweet but she’s leaving after three weeks.

Advertising is easy and it’s getting boring.  The teachers are really annoying, too.  He’s so weird.  Today, he was trying to make a point and said something about the price of tea in China.  I don’t even want to know what he was talking about.  Everyone was like--”Okay, Psychology is really cool.  It's interesting and I’m learning a lot.”

Last night, we had a dance and that was pretty fun.  I danced with this one black guy just as a friend.  And he’s nice.  Saturday we’re going camping.  I’m really excited.

Later on today, me and Stef are going hiking.  That should be fun.  So, they’re keeping us pretty busy.

Oh, I’ll tell you details about those guys when I get home.  I miss you!

Love Always,

Lauren

P.S. What’s new?

While Alan was away, I took time to reply to Paloma with a reasonably long letter:

Saturday, July 8, 1995

Dear Paloma,

I would have sent you real flowers but I thought these (on the card) would last longer.

The reason we are moving back to Marina Del Rey is because after the earthquake it was considered unsafe and the earthquake insurance required that we find a comparable house to move into, so that their engineers could check the Marina Del Rey house out to determine if it was affected by the L.A. Quake.  The insurance has been paying for our stay in the Pacific Palisades house.  Anyway, the case is finally settled and the Marina house had a little damage—but not much.  It is now getting fixed-up (better than it was before).  It will be ready by around September 1st, so it looks like we’ll move back.

The Marina house is a five-minute walk to the beach.  The beach is a 10-minute drive from here in the Palisades.  Although, we’ve taken a fondness to this neighborhood.  After all, if it’s good enough for Steven Spielberg and Sydney Pollack (Famous film director—he directed THE FIRM and so forth) …then it’s good enough for me. Ha-ha.

I went running this morning.  It feels good.  Do you ever run?

I remember ESCAPE FROM NEW YOURK where Kurt Russell played Snake.  I guess they called it NEW YORK 1997 in France.  It’s getting close to 1997.  Thank God New York is NOT like that yet.  Ha-ha...hopefully NEVER!

Alan is going to Seattle for the next 3 weeks from July 9th to July 28th.  He’s going to COFFEE COLLEGE since he’s involved in doing 15-Franchise locations of SEATTLES BEST COFFEE.  I think it will be a great business.  It’s the hottest trend in the USA.  Have you ever heard of STARBUCKS COFFEE?  It started in Seattle and it’s a café chain, places that serve pastries, cappuccinos, café lattes, mochas.  Of course, this is an everyday scene in France with all of the Petit Boulangerie’s around.  That’s where the whole idea came from.  It’s clear that the best ideas in food, fashion, etc. come from people like YOU, Paloma!  I hope you’re smiling now—but it’s true!

I am going to Boston, Massachusetts for 5-days (Aug 10-14th).  Ooops, only 4-days, I guess.  Alan and I signed-up for a special tour deal and one of the best parts is going to the NORMAN ROCKWELL Museum.  I love Rockwell’s artwork.  And speaking of art... now that Alan will be in Seattle for 3-weeks I think I’m going to use my extra time to do a painting.  Alan and I seem to go to a lot of movies.  I’ll use that time to do a painting (or two), hopefully.

I need to run more and work on the muscles, too.  Do you still have your muscles or have they deteriorated?  Ha-ha.  I hope you're getting a little swimming in at that beautiful pool there.

Tonight, Alan and I are going to see IL POSTINO (THE POSTMAN), an Italian film.  It looks good in the newspaper ad.  I’ll clip the ad.  See...what do you think?  I’ll let you know.  Jeez...this card was printed in Madrid, Spain.

Speaking of SPAIN, we have two friends named HERB and CAROL.  Herb was originally an old friend of Alan’s but they are a long story.  He and Carol recently returned from SPAIN.  They went to Mallorca, Ibiza and Madrid.  They said Mallorca and Iviza was full of tourists and they didn’t like it; however, they loved MADRID and said it was ‘The New Paris’.  What do you think of that?  I’d like your opinion since you've been in both Paris and Madrid.  Well, I’m going to get ready for IL POSTINO.  Write soon!  I miss you.

Lots of Love,

Michael

P.S.  For your information—Alan stole this HOTEL PRINCIPE DI SAVOIA stationery for me when he took his mom to MILAN, ITALY for her 70th Birthday in March 1995.

Alan made it to SEATTLE and I was happy to receive his first bit of correspondence:

July 9, 1995, DAY 1, Seattle, 11PM

Michael,

Just got done with dinner with Colin and Sheila---.  Sheila is HOT for me.  She’s invited us to a party at her house and wants to get-together a lot.  I ate too much.  No more eating like that!  All we talked about was COFFEE (appropriate card).

Art Kleinman is his usual self, very nervous about COFFEE COLLEGE.

Colin looked great and talked about two stocks that should be bought:  MICROSOFT and STARBUCKS.  Colin said, “BUY THEM!”  Sheila has so much money that she gets 20% return on her portfolio guaranteed.

I miss you and hope you’re having a quiet rest.

The room is good enough.  I’m getting up at 6AM to call you in the morning and then to the gym by 7AM and to work (COFFEE COLLEGE) by 9AM.

Love,

Alan

Hmm....makes me wish I was going to COFFEE COLLEGE, too.

Day 2, July 10, 1995

Michael,

I want to go to your house and stay there with you!  Today was tough to say the least.  The history of Coffee, how to make a shot of espresso, how to steam milk into foam; How to work a POS cash register and how to live another day without seeing you.

Tonight, we ate dinner in Kirkland, WA and saw the newest Franchise store to open.  He’s doing a great business (probably a million dollars per store).

Tomorrow is up at 5AM to open a new SBC store which is in the Wall Street area of Seattle.

The weather is beautiful but who could tell?

I worked out for an hour, ate a turkey sandwich for lunch with rice and beans for dinner.  Five cups of espresso and latte during the day!

Love, Alan

I had been to a Thrift Shop not-so-long-ago with Alan and I found this old metal ARMY helmet.  I wanted it.  I bought it.  Alan thought it was crazy; however, I had taken a photo of me wearing the helmet while only wearing my underwear.  I sent it to him--but I advised FOR HIS EYES only while at COFFEE COLLEGE.  I'm too embarrassed to show the photo because in-my-eyes I only see a fatty.  Alan says he doesn't see it---but I'm definitely out-of-shape.  It's good to take photos like this so you know how vital it is to get in-shape or it get even more out-of-hand.  I don't think the helmet photo of me is ready for prime-time--but I'll display it in the next blog for fun.  Readers, please don't laugh.

July 10, 1995

Michael,

I love You.  What a weekend.  I had such a great time.  Memories:

The Space Needle; Madison Park (gay) and a Chicken Burger; Queen Anne, Magnolia, Kirkland, WA, SBC’s all over the place, Walks...

Only with you could I ever enjoy so much.  The HELMET made it.  Where is the spoon?

When I looked at this card, I visualized you with that helmet on.  Did you see MSFT, IBM, INTC, today?  109, 107, 77....Oh well!

Alan wrote me an amusing computer-made card about SPECIAL COFFEE from Seattle, WA.   The 20th of each month is our anniversary day (since we met November 20th), so he sweetly remembered in anticipation for JULY 20th.  He jokes that he is in ‘Barista School’ with his new business endeavor with SEATTLES BEST COFFEE.   Alan wrote:

Michael, you really know how to keep me up at night!  I miss you so much!  Happy Anniversary!  Coffee college is exciting and I’ve learned a lot.  I hope MU, IBM, MSFT are all ok!  Where shall we go in October?

Love, Alan

Alan is learning so much more about the SEATTLES BEST COFFEE business.  I will soon go to Seattle to meet him for a few days.  I can’t wait.  I’ve never been to Seattle.

I will be arriving in Seattle on July 15th, so I’ll get to see first-hand what that city is all about.  I’m sure I’ll have a few cups of coffee.  I wish I could have a homemade one from Alan while he’s at COFFEE COLLEGE, though. Ha-ha  Maybe I’ll feel more Italian after a few cappuccinos in one day.

About me: THE GEMINI

“The beautiful is always bizarre.” --Charles Baudelaire, FLOWERS OF EVIL

Ashley and Holly had such a nice summer escape with us here in L.A.  Ashley wrote a letter using the GARFIELD stationery I sent her, signed by her and Holly.  It was so sweet:

Dear Uncle Mike + Alan,

Thank you for letting us stay at your house.  We had a great time.  We had fun playing chess and playing in the pool.

We hope you are not broke from paying for Disneyland, food and the munch-ums!  We had so much fun staying with you.  We miss you both.

Say HI to Carrie and Lauren and Gloria.

And have a great summer!  Thanks!

Love,

Ashley & Holly

P.S. We didn’t get sick on the plane!

I laughed at a cute postcard that Alan found and slipped my way unexpectedly.  It was About me, THE GEMINI.   Alan wrote:

‘I couldn’t resist.  It sounds like you--.

You love talking.

You love to listen.  (I think he meant that I love to NOT listen.  Ha-ha)

What do you think?

I Love You, Alan

The postcard discloses that Gemini’s RULER is Mercury and ELEMENT is Air.

As a Gemini, you love friends and talking above all else.  You are well-loved in return, because of your positive outlook on life and your ability to tell jokes.  However, you should try to remember to listen once in a while, it’s important too.  Your socializing comes close to causing problems at work and at home:  you employer and your mate think that you don’t take them seriously enough.

Most Suitable Partners:  LIBRA and AQUARIUS

Famous Gemini’s:  Joan Collins, Paul McCartney, Clint Eastwood.

I had to laugh at this because Paloma loves Paul McCartney and Clint Eastwood.  I had no idea they were Gemini’s also.  Cest la vie.

Just a Little Surprised

To observe attentively is to remember distinctly. --Edgar Allan Poe, The Murders in the Rue Morgue

Paloma wrote me and it was typewritten but she had these cool images injected onto the sheets of paper.  It was very artsy cool.  I loved it.  She wrote:

Balaruc, l3 20 juin 1995

Dear Michael,

Thanks for your cards.  I was just a little surprised when I discovered the one with the parrots that says KATIN which means prostitute in French, but that’s ok (in fact it’s not written the same way).

Lucky you!  Seems like a lot of people really love you.  That was probably great to have that surprise party.  See, that’s Alan’s fault; otherwise, I would have been there.  I’m sure he did it on purpose!  I am for the peace in couples!

I’m glad you enjoyed the view of Spielberg’s house.  Too bad I can’t send you video tapes.  Yesterday, I saw this show made by Estelle Halliday where she travels all over the world and shows places in a town.  This time she was in Miami and we saw Madonna’s house, Stallone’s and Gianni Versace’s.  I, of course, know who he is.  I like Versace clothes a lot.  In fact, I will be one of his future customers as soon I will be rich.  And I saw another house that belongs to a basketball player and that is on sale for 10 million dollars.  I’m thinking about buying it!

Why are you moving back to Marina Del Rey?  Isn’t Pacific Palisades by the beach?

You are right.  I like Kurt Russel even if these last years I’ve only seen shitty movies with him.  In fact, I fell in love years ago of the guy he plays in “New York 1997” (ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK).  His name was Snake.  Do you remember that movie?  Of course, I would rather have a picture of you!

They are not playing CASPER over here yet.  Who plays in it?  What is it about?  They’ve talked a lot about BRAVEHEART.  A French actress, Sophie Marceau, plays in it.  I already told you about her.  She is the one who played in the movie PACIFIC PALISADES.  I’ve also heart about the movie with Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.  I have read in one of those trash magazines that they had some kind of crush.  I also like Clint Eastwood a lot—even if he is way older than I am.  I fell in love in a movie with Shirley MacLaine (she was a sister) that was an old western.  I have not heard yet about FRENCH KISS.  It’s funny to see France in American movies.  That reminds me of FRANTIC, Roman Polanski’s movies with Harrison Ford and Roman’s wife.  I liked it.

I loved the music from the movie PULP FICTION.  I want to buy it.  Did I tell you that I’ve seen it?  You are right.  It was really violent.  I liked it except that scene with Bruce Willis that really makes you feel something, you don’t see that much blood.  The idea is really disgusting and it’s really worse to see liters of blood.  In fact, don’t you think that without that part of the movie it would have been good?  It was different.  I liked the scenes with John Travolta.

I would like to see INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE and FRENCHKISS now.  Maybe SIRENS, too, since you say it’s great.  I wasn't that attracted by this one.

I also know who Michael Crichton is—Thank you!  I do not live in the middle of the jungle!

Talking about KEY WEST, isn’t it where Kelly McGillis has her restaurant.  THE KELLY’S?  If it is not there that’s somewhere around there.  I saw it yesterday in that same show I was telling you about.  You are right that it looks like the kind of place with weather you and I would like.  I also liked the views of Miami.  I love the Art Deco style (Of course, inspired by France!)

Nothing else to tell you today except that I'm very tired because I took Alexandre to the train station this morning at 7AM.  He will be in Paris in about an hour at 111:55AM.  The TGV is really fast.  He is gone to get our new car.

How do you like this homemade paper?  I have to go now.  Write me.

I was, of course, kidding about Alan (in case he reads your mail).  Say hello for me.

Love,

Paloma

I guess Paloma forgot about our structural damage from our Marina Del Rey house from the earthquake.  The Pacific Palisades house is only leased temporarily thanks to our Homeowner’s Insurance.  The party in Pacific Palisades is almost over—but at least we can say we lived here (for a while).

The groovin’ sisters (Ashley and Holly) are still here this week.  I’m enjoying their company along with mom, too.  We went to see another movie.  This time it was BATMAN FOREVER.

And to cap off the end of the week I was sad to have to take mom and my nieces to LAX as they’re heading back to Alameda.  On my way back I had a postcard from Barbara Reynolds in Berkeley:

June 95, Almost 3AM

You’ve heard about our heat wave no doubt.  I like the experience.  Feels so meditative.

Alice and I had breakfast at BRICK HUT on Saturday before seeing the movie WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING.

So, when do you plan on being here this July?

We saw the movie PRIEST last week.  So good...did you see?

I’ve got to tell you...every SOLSTICE when the sun is highest in the heavens it is possible to stand an egg on end without support.  Isn’t that exciting?  Something to add spark to our eyes.

Love, Barbara

POOPED OUT

“Spontaneity...I’m not very good at it yet, but I hope I will become so with practice.” --T.J. KLINE, The House in the Cerulean Sea

I was working but it’s almost like a non-work week because I knew mom was coming to visit with the girls (my nieces, Ashley and Holly).   The plans including staying at home by the swimming pool, going to Universal Studios and taking a walk to the shops on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica.  It will be easy and fun.

It was Father’s Day and Gloria sent me a card.  That was sweet:

6/18/1995

Dearest Michael,

A very Happy “Father’s Day” to you!  You have taken being a “Dad” just like a duck takes to water.  Want you to know how happy we are that you are here for my granddaughters, Lauren and Carrie.  You are a positive influence for them and being exposed to your great values has helped them mature into lovely ladies.

Love Always,

Gloria and Jack

Alan was so kind to my mom and nieces.  He welcomed them with open arms.

It was fun to see the swimming pool being used.  It was like having two mini-mermaids.  Both Ashley and Holly are like fish.  They love to swim and aren’t afraid of the water (like Uncle Mike, Ha-ha).

I was able to have my own alone time, reading while the girls swam in the pool.   Mom was on-guard, watching the girls play in the swimming pool.  Mom was watching the puppy that didn’t belong to us.

“Hey mom, maybe you should get a puppy?”

“Are you kidding?  I have enough with these two,” Mom replied, referring to Ashley and Holly.  Ha-ha

We left to go shopping at the 3rd Street Promenade and I looked in my rear-view mirror and I saw Steven Spielberg in his car right behind me.   Ashley and Holly got so excited.  They kept turning around.

I said, “Don’t turn around, try to act normal.  He’ll think you know who he is.”

It was pretty funny.

After shopping we had lunch.

The following day we went to Universal Studios.  That was fun.  I went on a few rides.  Holly and Ashley had fun with the slide.  We watched a free play of the FLINTSTONES; however, it’s not really free when you consider the price of admission.  Ha-ha.

The best part about taking the girls to Universal Studios was the reward mom and I got afterwards.  The girls POOPED OUT.  They were out cold.  This gave us some breathing time.  We all had a great time.  I like amusement parks.  It’s amusing.

We went to see POCOHANTAS.  We all enjoyed that outing, too.

I just felt like I was eating too much.  I was feeling chubby.  As soon as mom and the girls leave, I’m going to work on trimming down.  If you don’t work on it—it's not going to happen by itself.

Mom, Ashley and Holly are great company though.  Alan felt the same way.  They made us laugh.  Memories were made and will stick.  Our planning paid off.  The more we did the more memories we had, so it was all worth it.  We were careful. I enjoyed planning out our activities.  Of course, it’s always best to make room for spontaneous activities because that’s when really fun surprises pop into the picture.

Is he your lover?

She’s always been like strong perfume.   Better In small doses.  And at a distance. --V.E. Schwab, The invisible Life of Addie LaRue

My niece, Ashley, writes with excitement over her forthcoming visit to L.A.

June 1995

Dear Uncle Mike,

Thank You for the GARFIELD envelopes and paper.  But, how did you know I liked GARFIELD?

The Bridges of Madison County was good.  I liked it but it was too kissy!   I really want to see CASPER.  That sounds really good.  Same with POCAHONTAS.  I bet Holly will want to see POWER RANGERS, The Movie.

Next week I am coming over!  Next week at school is going to be busy.  Monday we are going to have a beach party.  We can get wet up to our waist and we are going to have a sand castle contest.

Ashley Grist and Dharminder Singh are bringing in TWISTER.  I can’t wait.  On Tuesday we are having a root beer float party.  I have to bring cookies for our ‘Study Buddy’ party on Wednesday.  On Thursday we are having our Swim Party at the HARBOR BAY CLUB, and on Friday we are playing baseball:  Kids vs. Teachers and Faculty.  We also have t-shirt signing and court of awards.  There’s barely any time for school!  Then, I’m coming to visit you and Carrie and Allen (or do you spell it ALAN?).  Have a great week.

Love,

Ashley M Armijo

And a cute BILL AND HILLARY CLINTON postcard surprise from Barbara Reynolds in Berkeley:

Hello Hello!

I guess you are happy to not be still working for Pac Bell (doom and gloom).  That is heard within our walls.  Is this an appropriate card for these words?  Just had to fill in the bland I left on the last card...

The new rep I believe you know is Doug Widger-Qualls.  He was born 5 years to the day after 'moi'.  La de dah...the most fun person here to work with.  Hope you are very well.  Saw my family this weekend and got to hold baby Lindsay...visiting here from Stanton.

Later, Barbara

Dorothy Rua provides some of her latest happenings:

6-7-95

Dear Michael,

How in the world do I top the last card you sent?  The one from Miami.  When I first saw it I said, “Oh My God!” out loud.  I know you didn’t get it the day we were at PAPYRUS together in Berkeley.  There is no way I would have missed those CALLA LILLIES!  I mean, what a card.  It has to go down as one of your best, along with so many others.  This may seem like a silly question but how do her “cupcakes” stay straight up like that when she’s on her back with her arms extended to the sides?

Interesting how I look at the two recent cards you’ve given me because they made you think of me.  First, we have the classy, reserved lady in the Black and White you gave me while in Berkeley.  Then, we have the tan goddess, enjoying the freedom she’s allowed herself on the beach (also classy, and sensual, too).  Two sides of an independent soul...if these come close to your thoughts, I like them.  If not, share yours with me.

My son, Jean-Paul wont’ be 16 years old until 2-22-96; however, he’s been looking for a good used car.  He has to use his own money, so he’s being pretty careful.  After some research, he finally made an offer on a 1976 Toyota Celica.  Turns out he bought the car from a friend of mine and fortunately, I know he’s always taken good care of it.  Now Jean-Paul needs to get his driving permit, then his license.  Pretty happy guy!  Is Alan going to buy your CELICA for Lauren?

This is not the end of the car stories.  My VOLVO finally screamed “Let me go”.  So, I was looking at a 93/94 VOLVO but finally decided I didn’t want to be working for a car payment.  And decided I’d get a different type of car until I could afford the VOLVO I wanted.  Well, I didn’t want an American or Japanese car, so my search was limited.  Then that Norman Rockwell station wagon painting kept creeping into my thoughts.  Why, I don’t know.  But I think it played a part in my final decision.  I bought a 1j985 PORCHE 944!  Peter was flabbergasted.  Conservative, practical, “I always think things through”.  Dorothy Rua did not bring home a “family car”.  Soon after I made the purchase, I started second guessing my decision but I’ve finally gotten comfortable with my decision and I love what I’ve done for myself.  It’s not just the car—the choice I made makes me realize I’m allowing myself to grow beyond those “safe” boundaries.  Does this make sense to you?  Peter asked, “What is this all about?” And my answer was, “It’s my turn.”   Anyway, the practical side of me knows it’s a good value; excellent condition and only 70,000 original miles on a German car.  When are you coming up for a ride?

Jan and I were planning to go to PISMO BEACH on the weekend of the 3rd but she just found out she may have to fly to Missouri for a family issue.  We’ll see.  I was looking forward to the R&R.  Hope we can still do it.

Nicole will be turning 18 years old.  Instead of a party she wants to spend the day in Monterey/Carmel.  Not everyone can do it, so we're going down for a day or two, including Judd, of course.  Should be fun...and it’s beyond Salinas!  Buth then, so is Pismo Beach.

Update:  Jan just left me a voice message.  It looks like we are on for Pismo Beach, so if you’re up that way or in Santa Barbara call me at 805-773-2023.  Wouldn’t that be fun?

Will try not to let so much time pass between cards to you.  I love hearing from you and always enjoy your cards and imagination (or are they stories from your life?).  Only you really know.

Warm thoughts and love, Dorothy

Paloma wrote me a few brief lines on a postcard.  There was a question she asked that blew me away.  And of course, the postcard had to depict a powerful woman, holding a serpent.  I suppose I will have to figure out how to answer.   I will:

...there are some huge traffic jams in Paris.  It seems like Alan is really your best-friend.  He is the only one you always tell me about.  Is he your lover?  You, of course, don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.

Saturday was Jonathan’s seventh Birthday.  He had a party on Sunday.  That was fun.

It also seems like you love New York, don’t you?     You’ve been there so many times.  What is it that you like so much?

Where in Hawaii do you usually go?  And which hotel do you stay?  We’d like to go once but you know I’m not planning a trip to the States anymore.  I’m too scared.

I know who Pierce Brosnan is...he lost his wife not too long ago, right? …

On June 8, 1995 I wrote back to Paloma:

Dear Paloma, Thanks for your Birthday card and recent letter.  It’s so sweet that you remember!  Well, I had a great surprise Birthday party!  Alan organized it.  My mom, my brothers, and their wives and all five of my nieces and nephew were here along with a number of select friends.  Alan should have called you to see if you could make it.  I would've been in shock if you were here when it happened.   My grandmother was even here!  Shhhh...I’m 26, not 36!

I am so glad you sent the photography aerial view of Spielberg’s house.  I doubt if he’d even allow it to be printed in an American magazine.  In any case, when I drive by, I can never see anything...just landscaped flowers, bushes and two gates.  I did see his wife pulling out one day while I was jogging by.  It’s too bad we may be moving back to Marina Del Rey on or around October 1, 1995.  This is a nice area but it will be nice to be by the beach again.  Oh...guess who else lives in this area!  I just found out because I saw her in her black jaguar (Goldie Hawn).   Her husband, Kurt Russell, has a cream-colored jaguar.  As you may recall I do remember that you had a HOT crush on Kurt (from Escape from New York), right?  Well, if you want to write him, I have his private home address for you.   Maybe he will send you a sexy-posed photo or would you rather have one of me?  Let me know and I’ll see what I can dig up.  Ha-ha

I saw several movies recently that were really good.  Go see CASPER and go see BRAVEHEART which stars Mel Gibson (he also directed).  It’s excellent.  I also saw BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY.  Meryl Streep was great.  Clint Eastwood was good but he seemed too old for the part.  And I am listening to the soundtrack to the music of a movie called FRENCH KISS, starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline.  It is so very good.  I loved it.  It takes you to Paris and the South of France (memories)...and I will make you a tape of the music when I get a chance because it’s too good.  Go see FRENCH KISS.  I want your opinion.

I liked your typewritten letter, too.  You’re right about UNMI...probably doesn’t work at Chez Panisse anymore.  I’m so glad we keep in touch the way we do.

I also miss when we used to go out together because we would have such fun—just the two of us.  Don’t worry, Dorothy Rua hardly ever writes to me.  You’re the only one that I keep such closed tabs with.  Does that make you feel better?  Ha-ha...you know how to make me feel good though!

Oh yeah, I did see LEGENDS OF THE FALL.  It was pretty good.  I liked INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE better.  I guess it’s because I like to bite necks.

When we were in Miami, we were walking in front of the Gianni Versace house.  Have you ever heard of him?  He’s a very famous fashion designer.  I know you are rolling your eyes and head right now because I know FULL WELL that you know of Versace.  Ha-ha.

You must see the movie SIRENS starring Elle McPherson.  It’s great.  More later...

Love You Lots,

Michael

Happy Belated Birthday to Jonathan!

P.S.  I’ll type you up a letter that’s longer than this next time.

P.S. #2 A new film called CONGO is opening this weekend.  It’s based on the book by Michael Crichton (he also wrote JURASSIC PARK).  I want to see it because I listened to the book on audio tape when Alan and I drove from Miami to Key West.  There were a number of French folks staying at the DUVAL HOUSE where we stayed while in Key West.  It was so warm and tropical.  It was ‘Paloma and Michael Santa Cruz weather’.  Ha-ha Later.

Love, Michael

And what do you know...Dorothy Rua wrote me again...

June 11, 1995:  Can’t seem to get to sleep.  Had a few drinks after dinner tonight and even got asked to dance the (SWING) while I was out, so I thought I’d be good and tired by now.  Especially since I didn’t get to sleep last night (morning) until 3AM.  Lying here thinking of you, so I thought I’d write.  Remember the gift you gave me five years ago:  the cucumber t-shirt.   Well, I’m wearing it for the first time tonight.  Guess it’s the first time I felt totally free to wear it without comments or questions.  After all of this time it still makes me laugh.  Jan got a real kick out of it, too.

Actually, Jan got more than a kick out of the music (tapes) you sent me over the years.  We listened to both tapes on the way down here and again since we’ve been here.  She has two favorites:  LOVE LETTERS and I’M YOUR MAN.   I love so many of the songs but those are included on my list of favorites, too.   Where did you find I’M YOUR MAN (by Leonard Cohen).  And, where is this guy?  Can I find him?

We spent hours on the beach today and we’ll be out there again tomorrow.  We’re hoping to ride those horses on the beach tomorrow, too.  Didn’t have enough time today because of the tan I was working on, lying on the sand with those calla lilies.  I’ll have to get a new bunch of calla lilies if you ever get a chance to meet me up here.

It was wild when I first walked into Jan’s home.  The first picture I saw on the wall when I entered was a framed print of calla lilies.  No kidding!  I mean, is that strange, or what?  My first thought was, “Michael’s been here!”  Ha-ha

Jan had been inviting me down here for months but I kept coming up with reasons for not heading down.  Now I know why.  Once down here with the ocean it’s so hard to think of leaving.  I know I’ve only ben her one day but even the people seem friendlier and more open to communication.  how am I ever going to be able to get back in the car and go back to Walnut Creek tomorrow?  I guess I have to remind myself there will be other times and be glad that I’m finally getting myself out of some of the routines that were bothering me.  This has been so good for me.  Can’t wait for “next time”.  There’s so much more exploring to do.

I feel so close to you here.  Maybe it’s the ocean, palm trees and sunshine that I know you also enjoy so much.  Getting a little sleepy now, so good night and sweet dreams.

Love You, Dorothy

MIAMI VICE: Listen to Me

Smoking is not only unhealthy in itself and dangerous to others in the vicinity, it is a clear indication of an irrational approach to life. --Graeme Simsion, THE ROSIE PROJECT, a novel

No, I never watched that series called MIAMI VICE but here I am in Miami now and I see the attraction here.  The weather is nice—though humid (the young can handle that).  I’m not into humidity anymore after Alan introduced me to the love of ‘air-conditioning’, so I am re-conditioned.  And the flying cockroach that jumped from the windshield of our car rental was not an enjoyable sight.  Yuck.

Nevertheless, I found the NEWS CAFE on the main drag and it was fun to glance and/or buy a magazine and just people watch all of the people walk along the sidewalk.  It was like watching a free fashion show as every other person really did look like a model.  Amazing.  I’m inspired to get more fit.  I’ve been living the good MIAMI VICE life and eating much too much.

I laughed a few weeks ago as someone said I looked like the guy from MIAMI VICE.  Don Johnson!  Yes.  I don’t see it---maybe when the lighting is very dark.  Who knows?

Alan was writing me and giving me a new card each day.  That was thoughtful.  The first card was imprinted ‘To my main squeeze...’.  Ha-ha; Alan wrote:

Michael,

After about 12 months of heaving workout and waxing I could look like th3e South Beach COD’s (Chests of Death).  For right now, and the last 5.5 years, I am satisfied with you and I’m getting better.  We had ‘3’ gay parties, 6 glasses of wine, 2 grouper grilled fish dinners, a bagel lady and lots of COD’s, 2-straight gay guys and great ocean time.  All in all,...I Love You, ALAN.

Another card from Alan...” For now...for always.”

I Love you and always will.  Michael, what a day.  Casper and SBC Coffee and Miami Subs and all afternoon in the ocean, having a great time.  RASCAL HOUSE followed by pool time after a South Beach stroll.  Tomorrow we are off to Key West and more excitement.  I was looking forward to push-ups this evening but the walk past The Body Shop blew that opportunity.  I love you anyway.  Alan

P.S.  It started with a bad photographer (me) and ended with a lost opportunity for me.  Maybe tomorrow...

We walked in front of the Gianni Versace mansion.  It amazed me as to how you can actually peek in to see the front of the house.  I wondered if Gianni was there now.  I have heard that he wakes up on early weekday mornings and walks to that NEWS CAFE.  Of course, we haven’t seen him, so he’s probably in Italy.  I wish I was in Milan, too.

Another card from Alan after a day in Key West, FL.

...imprint:  I like even the things about you that we don’t have in common.  Alan wrote:

Michael, this is the theme for today.  Shall I repeat...Glass Bottom boat ride, T-shirt shopping, getting drunk on vacation, etc.  We complement each other in all of these ways!

Key West is restful, colorful, with great yogurt and fresh fish.

I Love You.  Great times before we went to sleep.  Best of the day:  Great drinks at the Pier House and the pier (strong girls).  Love, Alan

June 1, 1995, Day 5 card from ALAN:

Michael,

We are at this House in Key West—the DUVAL HOUSE—trees, exotic tropical trees, a Peyton Place feeling, Gazebo, a hammock.  As you lay on the hammock you can see the thousand points of light, through the leaves of the trees.  You hear the birds chirping, the hammer going, the saw sawing.  It’ is the perfect place for a rest.  The day also consisted of Conch Fritters, Grilled Grouper, Tartar Sauce, Pizza, Pinot Grigio, Yellow Tail, Mahi-Mahi and bicycles that look great in front of our cottage!  A conversation with a LOL (Little Old Lady) about CUBA, and of course, a ride about a Catamaran named SIMI VALLEY to watch your first official sunset (3 pictures only).  An afternoon nap preceded by an afternoon delight and an hour on the Hammock of Shangri-La.  La-De-La... for lunch, today?

We’re having a great rest in Key West—enough t-shirts but not enough of you.  I Love You, Alan

P.S. My card is titled Blue Haze Under the Mango Tree—as in the restaurant that we at in last night!

June 2, 1995, Day 6

Nice running into you...Michael, that’s what would have happened to you last night if I didn’t save you.  Someone would have run into you.  I told you not to drink all of that liquor.  And Cuban cigars!!!  Please LISTEN TO ME from now on.  I love You and will always take care of you.  The rest of the day wasn’t so bad...bike riding, a great romantic lunch at BLUE HEAVEN, etc.  I really have a hard time writing a lot when I’m so upset about last night.  I guess the new Southern MARYANN and GINGER were the consolation prizes.  Remember to LISTEN TO ME in the future.  I know about you.  Then, we can enjoy the purpose of this card!  Love, Alan

To summarize night #6 in Key West FL it was quite an experience. We were at a local bar and there were two women seated next to us named MaryAnn and Ginger. Actually. those were seriously not their real names.  We just named them Mary Ann and Ginger because we felt like we were stranded on a tropical island (as in Gilligan's island).  Who remembers their names at this point?  Anyway, they were so friendly that we got to talking to them and we loved their southern accents.  We walked with them after our cocktails to see the sunset over a pier and while we were at the pier, they invited us back to their nearby hotel room to smoke a joint.  And then we returned to the pier and I don't know why but we ordered another cocktail.  And suddenly one of the women pulled out a Cuban cigar.  I had never tried a Cuban cigar.  I was so excited about it.  I took a few puffs and it made me cough, of course. Suddenly something hit me the wrong way it must have been the combination of the pot, the cocktails and the Cuban cigar.  I had to vomit next to the table but I turned my head and did it at the side of the table, trying to be inconspicuous.   Suddenly I was like totally drunk.  Something hit me in a wrong nauseous sort of way.  I'll never have a Cuban cigar again!   I was walking around as if I was a local drunk.  I wouldn't even say I was walking I was sort of dragging my feet.  Alan had to hold me up and guide me back to the DUVAL HOUSE.   The following day I didn't even remember what happened as I sort of blacked out.  Henceforth, Alan has lectured me and said to me many times: LISTEN TO ME, LISTEN TO ME, FROM NOW ON...LISTEN TO ME”.  And so, I am listening.   Although I’m having strange food cravings after that cigar!

Next card from Alan, June 3, 1995 “So, you can’t life a phone?”

Michael, Day 7...

You don’t call me anymore.  You used to call me and leave me great messages, romantic ones.  But now all I get are stock quotes.  I do have an answering machine at 454-8403 or at work, so...

As to the day in Key West, the morning after your bad behavior it started with you wanting Pepe Jeans and Kentucky Fried Chicken.   It ended with a 2:45AM movie.  Strange guy.... you are!  But you’re great in bed and have a BOS (body of steel).

The two movies satisfied my movie need until CONGO.  The movie (as opposed to the book) which we read in the morning (and the book gave the INTEL stock tip).   Good deal!  The Hotel is a good deal---really is, so I hope we really enjoy it today.

I like our new CD’s (three of them).  I am definitely going back to my diet next week.  Only R&B, potatoes and juices, etc.

Today is the last day in South Beach.  I hope you find your vacation dreams but if you don’t the thought was half of it.  Until Day #8...

Your Lover (COD is coming soon), Alan.

Another funny Birthday card from ALAN:

“Wanna know the secret of scoring?  ...keep your eye on the tight end".

Happy Birthday.

Michael,

I want to wish you a Happy 36th Birthday trip, etc.  I hope you had a Birthday to remember.  It is always fun thinking of ways to give you a memorable birthday.  Today was restful—beach in the morning, BRAVEHEART, Miami Subs, followed by a great dinner on the Western part of Lincoln Mall.  We walked down the runways of South Beach.

A few thoughts...I wish you would be comfortable about us in public.  I don’t want to hold your hand or anything like that—but what if we’re dressed similarly---I don’t understand.  In case you didn’t know it really hurt my feelings when you don’t want to be associated with me.  I'm very sensitive, too.  Frankly, I love you and don’t care what other people on South Beach care or think.  Think about it!

Love, Alan

Oh...one last card from ALAN:

I couldn’t resist this card.  It reminded me of BRAVEHEART (the movie), today.  I also know how you have nice legs, great stomach and a COD.  This card lacks face—0but is an example of what 8-hours a day will do.  I’m sort of depressed as you are lying on the bed, writing your card.  I’m not like the guys of South Beach.  I need love and positive reinforcement.  Love, Alan

It was an eventful, unforgettable time in Miami.  We may not go back for a while—there are too many other places to go.  Upon my arrival home I had a postcard waiting for me from Barbara Reynolds.  The postcard depicted a photo by Gail Good win from 1994 of a KITE FLYING.   I loved the scene, overlooking the San Francisco Golden Gate bridge as a boy looks on with his dog.   Barbara wrote:

Dear Mike,

Hope you had a super Birthday.  I woke up to a dream about you early this AM.  So, it was really about me, of course.   Anyway, it got me to thinking about taking you to breakfast at the new and improved BRICK HUT.  So, when will that be?

Did you say that you do have internet?  I’m finding so many friends with it...I think I should find myself that way.  Do you do your writing in a modem or still on paper?  I remember you talking about input of all of your writings, etc.

Yesterday, our office adopted four new people including one familiar face.  It’s a small PacBell world.  I do think I need to re-locate sometime in the next 18-months.  Are you there now?  Come to any conclusions lately?  On job, etc.?  Isn’t this postcard a nice view?  Later, Barbara

A Little Bit of Sugar

“A little bit of sugar is a great mood enhancer.” --Alex Michaelides, THE SILENT PATIENT

Happy birthday to me!  This is my birthday week.  My mom came to visit.  It was great because we spent some great time together.  However, I was in for a big surprise. Alan had this intricate plan.  I was to take my mother to the movies in Santa Monica.  It was a matinee and then we were to see a second movie.  After the first movie I thought to myself that we should skip the second film.  Mom was very direct and insistent.  I was quite surprised because she normally never acts in this manner.  In any a case I agreed to see the second movie.  I would learn later that mom’s assignment per Alan was to keep me out of the house so that he could set up for my surprise party.

I had known there was going to be a small party for me but I did not know it was going to be on this night.  When we arrived at the house in Pacific Palisades I was stunned when I saw my grandmother once I walked into the door.  Suddenly there was a scream of surprise and I was in shock to see my brothers, my nieces, my nephew, my sister-in-law's and all of these other friends that I did not expect to see on this night.   Every moment I turned I saw a face that I did not expect to see.   It was pretty miraculous what Alan was able to put together without my knowledge.  There were tables set up.  There were balloons.  There was a gift section for me.  There was food, festivities and music, of course.

I placed a bunch of postcards out as I wanted everyone who was there to write a few words on a postcard for me.  Some people participated some did not.  I had a fun time.  I was dancing.  I was drinking.  I was laughing. I was very, very surprised and most of all very, very happy.

My friend Jim Ubl was there.  That was quite a surprise, too.   He chose a postcard for me and on the back of the postcard he wrote: “Happy birthday, Mike.   I figured this postcard would fit you because you have a lot of STYLE.   That could be you in the sunglass reflection.   Your friend, Jim from the Gym.

It's funny because Alan's accountant and our friend, Cathy Imai chose the same postcard as ‘Jim from the Gym’ did.   Cathy wrote: “Michael I saw this card and thought of you.  You certainly have the power of style!  Have a very Happy Birthday! XOXO, Cathy Imai.”

Jack Cohen shows a still life postcard and wrote: “Dear Michael, Very Very Happy Birthday and many more.  I know this is not original but it is sincere.  Jack”

My niece Ashley chose an artsy card and she wrote: “Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike!   Just remember you're 36 not 26!  Ashley

My brother, John, actually chose a postcard.  Surprise, Surprise!  John wrote: “Brother Mike, hope you were surprised for your 36th birthday, only 36 years young.  I picked this card simply because after driving here with four kids, then two nights in the hotel, it was definitely an adventure!  Happy, Happy Birthday brother,

Love you,

 John,

Sherri,

Ashley,

Holly,

Ally

and Dylan,”

My niece, Leigh, chose the infamous American Gothic oil painting as her postcard.  Leigh wrote: “Uncle Mike, Surprise! We came to your birthday party.   I love you, Leigh and my niece, Lauren chose an oil painting postcard of jugglers at the circus (painted by the famous French painter Pierre Auguste Renoir). Lauren Armijo wrote: “Mike, Happy Birthday!   Uncle Mike, I love you.  You are the best uncle. Lauren

Alan chose the postcard of the TV series that we loved called Central Park West.  He wrote:  “Michael, I know how much you missed this show.  How about a trip to Central Park West in New York City for your birthday?  Love, Alan "

Alan also wrote on another card: “Michael when I bought this card, I didn't know that there would be a bar like the Palace that was raining.  This is exactly your type of card as far as everything goes, I'm your best type in body and mind.  Tonight, we go to a party and I hope you get what you want. I have what I want and can really enjoy myself.  These seven months in Pacific Palisades have been quite a party experience.  Let's be happy.  Let's enjoy the rest of the vacation and each other period!  I love you, Alan.”

My birthday party was so much fun. I even managed to snap a number of photos here in there of everyone who was present. There were so many photos taken that it is hard to choose which ones to share.   It was sweet to see mom and Grandma, carrying my Birthday cake with all of the candles.  It’s a good thing they didn’t drop it.  Ha-ha.   We all needed a little bit of sugar.

As the week progressed, I received more birthday cards. I received one cute card from Dorothy Rua. She wrote: “Dear Michael, placing the picture in a frame may be a bit presumptuous but here's the deal... if you decide to replace the picture with a photo of some cute young blonde just make sure you make the switch back the weekend I come down for a visit.  Haha.  What do you think of the snapshot?  You look great as usual.  Love, Dorothy (her card depicted a scene from Renoir).  She wrote that it was her favorite Renoir painting.  It is the luncheon of the boating party, painted in 1881.

My dear friend, Birda sent a sweet letter for my birthday.  She wrote:

“Michael it is hard to believe it's been a year since your last birthday.  Happy birthday!  So, I guess whoever said time goes by faster the older you get was right.  I just hope the wise part is right.  I know you probably think I have forgotten you by now but it is not true.   I have been getting older and lazy. That comes with old age too. You'll see in a few more years what I mean.  I hear next I will become more forgetful, so if my spelling is bad just remember it is old age and I forgot how to use spell check.  Enough about getting old.  How are you?  We are all fine here in rainy Northern California.  I am still working hard.  But not off the front of trucks anymore.  I leave that for the younger guys now.  I have been wondering when you are off on another vacation.  It has been a while since I have gotten a postcard from a strange exotic land.  My guess is it will be soon.  Whenever it is I will be looking forward to hearing from you. I hope your Birthday is special.  Love Always, Birda.”

I received a surprise letter from someone I had not heard from in quite a while. His name is Howard Edelstein.  Here is what Howard wrote:

“Dear Michael, Yes, it is I.  Sorry about this stationary but I'm on a plane and it is the only thing I've got on hand.  It certainly has been a long time period.  Sounds like everything is going well for you.  Myself yes, I'm still a doctor and I'm on my third career.   My first was at Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez.  After finishing my specialty in infectious diseases from 1988 to 1990 I did research, teaching and patient care.  I left, luckily, about one year before the hospital closed.  My last job at Kaiser Hospital was for five years but I finally got fed up with the BS and left.  Part of the reason I was able to leave was that I began a consulting business in helping medical records departments in hospitals to improve their coding and consequently increase their Billings.  In addition to my consulting, I work in an HIV clinic two afternoons a week.  I am presently working on some educational units in HIV for the patients and house staff, interns and residents.  Life is busy but no more 9 to 5!  I am quite involved in PAWS (Pets Are Wonderful) support in San Francisco and I am on the board of directors.   The rest of my time is spent travelling, rollerblading, doing yoga, playing the piano, reading and dating.   Yes, I am single at this point. Although, I just started dating someone.  It is the 4th date and no sex yet!  Well, if you make it to San Francisco give me a call.  Sometimes I go to Los Angeles and would love to see you. Take care, Howard”

And Alan slipped another surprise card for my birthday. It was a card that depicted ‘The Picnic’, an oil painting by Claude Monet.  Alan wrote:  “Michael, Happy Birthday May 26 1995.  I want to wish you a healthy and happy birthday.  Our trip to South Beach and Key West will help to celebrate our love for each other during your birthday month period.  I am very happy with you as I know you are with me.  I could recite all of the great times, dinners, or trips we have had but the best for me is just lying-in bed holding you and looking at you and loving you.  That is what I wish to celebrate on your birthday! Love, Alan”

My first cousin Donna Armijo also sent me a Birthday card from Washington state which was a pleasant surprise.  She wrote: “Michael, I hope your birthday was a happy one.  We just recently had a very special Mother's Day!  My mom and dad flew up because Danielle made her first communion on the 14th of May but what mom did not know was that we flew up my brother the night before. She was so surprised!  It was a really great weekend with them all!  We finally had a family portrait taken.  They turned out pretty good.  I've enclosed one so you can see my three beautiful little girls.  Danielle is 8, Veronica is 2 ½, and Sarah is 8 months.  Doesn't Sarah look just like David?  And little Veronica is the only one in the family with blue eyes.  Danielle always makes a face when getting her picture taken.  David just recently grew the mustache and I'm still not sure if I am going to let him keep it.  And me, well, what can I say?  I still hate getting my picture taken but this one turned out OK.  We are going to try and make it down to California this summer.  If we do, maybe we could see you. I would sure like that! Keep in touch. Have a great day. Lots of love, Donna”  And...Donna's mother (my Aunt Lela), sent a birthday card as well.  It was written as follows:

“Late for your birthday!  This card could have been sent on time and arrived with all the rest to wish you a happy birthday but you wouldn't have been impressed.  Like folks who make late entrances so they will get special mention, it wanted to be noticed and have your full attention... so, here it is, all by itself, and just a little late... Michael, I hope your day was happy and your year will turn out great!  Can you believe it, me of all “tias” forgetting the actual day?  Not really forgetting, just letting time get away from me... Love, Aunt Lela”

And of course, the finale birthday card was from my mother she wrote:
“Dear Mike, This brings you birthday wishes and a lot of love as well, for you’re a son who means much more than these few words can tell... the wishes are for happiness in everything you do, and the love is very special because it is meant for you!  Have a very happy birthday.  Love, Mom

The party was swift but unforgettable.  And now, Alan and I are on to the next thing.  We are preparing for our escape to Miami from May 27th through June 4th.   I am looking forward to this adventure.  I’ve always wondered about Key West, so let’s see what that is like.  I am sometimes uncertain as to where things will go---but for now, I am loving where things are going right now.

The preparing for our trip to Miami was exciting.  Alan kept asking me if I remembered to pack this, that or the other.  It was almost Caribbean style as I learned of a beer called CARIBE.   It was the 'it' beer in Miami, so I went along with it---even though I am not a beer drinker.  I don't want a beer belly!   There's something special about yellow umbrellas and sunsets in Miami.  There was more to come...

“What do you want for yourself?” He’d asked.  He honestly wasn’t sure.  That he’d blinked and somehow years had gone by, and everyone else had carved their trenches, paved their paths, and he was still standing in a field, uncertain where to dig. --V.E. Schwab, THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE
