Alien Xenomorph Mask

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!

I decided to make an Alien Xenomorph mask and I tried sculpting it twice before this third time. Last summer was the first try and I scrapped it after having too much going on. Plus, I wasn’t completely satisfied with it.

This March was the second try and I realized that it was incredibly lopsided! So I scrapped that attempt.

The third attempt started in late April/early May. It might’ve been the charm…

I use a Christmas tree stand with a block of wood for an armature-not sure why, but it’s fun! I used two empty apple juice bottles to bulk out the head and to try to keep the sculpture somewhat light.

When I finished the sculpture, I went and made the mold. BammBamm had to help me separate it, because it is very large and heavy.

Here’s how it went…

Julie Newmar as Catwoman Sketch

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!

I love Batman! I’m definitely a fan of the 60’s tv series and enjoy drawing or painting the characters. Here’s an 11×14 sketch of Julie Newmar as Catwoman…

Halloween 2022

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!!

This year I went as Phantom of the Opera. I used the version with the eyes cut out of the mask. It just felt more traditional in the Don Post sense of the word. A friend of mine used the version with the eyes left in the mask. His girlfriend went as Beetlejuice. Another friend of mine went with his grandkids, wearing one of my Wolfman masks. A couple went as Frankenstein’s monster (my mask) and his Bride. There were others, but at the moment-I’m not sure where those photos are? Anyway, check it out…

Octo-BLUR!! Or how I survived four book signings in four weeks…

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!!

This time, October was back to being Octo-Blur!! I scheduled four book signings in four weeks. What’s wrong with me?! I just like celebrating the spooky season accordingly!!

It started off with a book signing at Barnes & Noble in Amherst,NY. Accompanying me, were local cosplay superheroes Captain America, Spider-Man and Wolverine. Also on hand was their trusty photographer, Todd.

After that, I hit Joe D’s October Comic Book Show, Cats Like Us and finally, Pulp716. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun-leaving me exhausted by the end of the month!!

Phantom of the Opera Mask

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!

After I sculpted back to back Cyclops masks, I had to try catching up and sculpt a Phantom of the Opera mask. I know- making monsters is addictive!! 🎃

So… using references from Lon Chaney Sr.’s iconic role and a little bit of various sculptures and masks, I came up with what I wanted. I made two versions- one with eyes cut out and one with eyes left in. Tune into future posts to see what the finished product looks like…

Cyclops Mask Part 2- The Success!!

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!

After chucking the failed first attempt at a mold for the Cyclops sculpture, I cleaned up my workspace. I began another Cyclops mask sculpture. It was barely a few weeks since the botched attempt, so it was still stinging! Could I recreate what I just botched?! Well… yes!! if you compare the first sculpt to the second sculpt, you’ll find some differences. Then, I had my prototype.

Cyclops Mask Part 1-The Failure

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!

I made a Cyclops sculpture for a mask, based off of Ray Harryhausen’s and later, Don Post’s work. Everything was going well until I started making the mold. That’s when I broke off a large section and had to scrap the whole thing!

Many curse words were thrown around that morning and I felt lower than low. Hers the photograph evidence to show the I’ll fated project…

In this collage, you can see (from the bottom to the top) my sculpting process. After that, like I said- I broke the mold and scrapped it out. Tune into the next blog entry Cyclops Mask Part 2-The Success!

Monstermatt Garage Shirts by Cats Like Us

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!!

Remember a few posts ago, when I said “ Pay close attention to the monsters in cars illustrations?”

Well… when I brought those two drawings to CatsLikeUs, the owners Julie Ann and Andrew Davis, proposed using them for t-shirts. To say I was excited, just doesn’t cover my feelings about it!!!

We talked and planned things out, adding a third design soon after. When the shirts were ready, Julie Ann and Andrew really flipped my wig, when they hired Sweetheart Pinup to do a photoshoot with models!!

Friends/Fans in Texas, Canada, Florida and other locales have been popping up, wearing our shirts. I’ve had folks wearing my masks and reading my books-but this was alien territory to me.

We are talking about new designs for 2023, so let’s see how it goes. Meanwhile, check out the shirts and the models. Heck, I even do my best Clark Kent impression!!

In the first pictures, you’ll see Eric Elliott (Batman Meets Godzilla) , Maz Watkins(artist extraordinaire), Benjamin “Frankenstein” Cohen (Super Monster Fan), Thea Faulds (Theremin player ), and Tomb Dragomir (TombTV, Rue Morgue Radio) all sporting our shirts.

Joe D’s, Teddy Hanes, Deceptacon…Shows/Appearances

#GhoulMourningManiacs!!!

From March until a few months later, I was a busy beaver at various comic book shows.

Starting off with Joe D’s annual March event, which donates proceeds to the Variety Club Telethon.

After that, it was Teddy Hanes’ event at the Buffalo Marriott. Note that I’m emerging from the Weapon X mutant tank!!

In May, things followed with Deceptacon-where I got to hang with Ming Chen. He’s on AMC’s “Comic Book Men” program. Super nice dude!!
