Hurricane Sandy and the meaning of Resilience for New York City and New Yorkers

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy

“These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

Thomas Paine, “The American Crisis, No. I,” Pennsylvania Journal, December 19, 1776; Writings 1;169!

Hurricane Sandy left us with incredible devastation, human loss, property damages, thousand of people saved and millions without power. I have never gone through a natural disaster like this one: it almost felt like an apocalyptical passage from the bible transformed into a direct aim: the Northeast in United States. I live in the Upper West Side, one of the greatest areas also cause is close by to the park. Mayor Bloomberg announced that this hurricane was going to hit us hard, like no one has ever done before. I have lived in the city for ten years and I was ready for the worst, loss of power, electricity, flooded streets everything and although the path of the hurricane was surrounding the island of New York City we knew it was going to hit us hard.

Maps never lie, maps were telling us that this one was going to be a violent one and everything below west 4th was like that: streets, subways and bridges flooded, loss of power and devastating consequences in other boroughs like Brooklyn or Queens (80 houses wiped out due to fire) and catastrophic effects in New Jersey, a beloved jersey shore where a year ago i was sun bathing with my girlfriend now ex getting ready for a massive seminar for Englewood Hospital, all that Long Branch is gone, destroyed. And what is even more saddening is that New York is not used to this catastrophes so insurance companies are not used to insure although there should be always a small line at the end saying that your property should be protected in the case of  castastrophy.

However, me not being a New Yorker but living here for ten years my morale was hit not because of the devastation of this tragedy and although feeling lucky for not getting hit directly just to see the millions of people suffering and the incredible amount of property lost but in this times were tragedy strucks just a great city like New York also a new opportunity arises where resilience can be shown at different levels. Here is where my opening paragraph made me realize our most incredible asset: Resilience. I am going to mention the paragraph again:

“These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

– – Thomas Paine, “The American Crisis, No. I,” Pennsylvania Journal, December 19, 1776; Writings 1;169!

I still remember it was 7:20 when i was supposed to have my first client: David a successful lawyer in the upper west side. I was not sure if he wanted to do the session or if he was like me: feeling down, depressed and stuck by tragedy.

Central park tree impacting in a car

Central park tree impacting in a car

He responded to me quickly and said lets do at 8 better. I said OK i was still with tears in my eyes looking at everything on tv. I brushed my teeth, hugged my cats and got myself ready to start the new day. Walking at 83rd and Central Park west saw a tree from the park falling into an expensive car parked there and completely destroying it, then few more block and tress were all in the middle of the street like as of the most devastating tragedy has passed by. It reminded me the movie “I am a Legend” where Will Smith was in the middle of the city surrounded by destruction and chaos. I got finally to David’s apartment and my surprise is to see him even emotionally affected to get back to his life like nothing has happened cause he wanted to be resilient, he even said to me : Are you ok Michael? You didn’t have to come if you didn’t want to. Then i realized that the word resilience is exactly that stand up fast and hit harder than before. David trained like never before: he was strong, fast, smart on top of his game and he even said to me thanks for coming now lets help in whenever we can do. I went back to my street and decided to help removing branches and calling the volunteer line even going to my church and asking if there was something to do.

Tree fallen at 82nd street where i helped remove branches

Resilience according to Webster Dictionary:

Definition of RESILIENCE

1 the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress

2 an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change

After ten years in New York City i finally understood the incredible world of Resilience and how this city like many other in United States posses the valuable quality of striving for excellence that the Ancients Greeks always strived for. I am Resilient and i am bouncing back stronger than ever and so do you. Thanks for reading.

CHILDREN AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT

brain fitness

Physical exercise is crucial for the present and future of our kids. The kids brain reaches at age of 10, 90% of the total adults size. However, the development of different areas of the brain are very different between kids and adults. In the issue “ The Brain,Discovery June 2007” refers on how kids and teenagers rely more heavily in the frontal cortex that is associated with emotions. The adult has other areas of the brain more activated for decision making. In addition the same frontal cortex will be considered more mature since different parts of the brain get involved in the process of decision making.

STUDY TO READ AND SHARE: “Be Smart Exercise your heart: the effect of exercise on cognition” By Charles Hillman

Super Body, Super Brain School Program will explore that fascinating relationship between the brain and the muscles and help kids to have a better brain reorganization. Super Body, Super Brain School Program will give commands such as (“lunge position, back leg comes front up in the air, hold it and coordinate with an upper body movement”). The benefit will not only be associated to the learning process but with a better organization of the brain when using the powerful cerebellum, part of the brain responsible for balance, coordination and proper execution of physical movement.

“The benefit of training balance and coordination at once will help to have a better reorganization of the brain through the activation of different areas responsible for decision making”

Is Super Body, Super Brain School Program scientifically proven?

Super Body, Super Brain School Program on scientific evidence of different studies based on the brain, physical fitness, balance and coordination. There is extensive research showing the strong correlation between Physical Fitness and a higher academic achievement

Brain Studies

The cerebellum, the area of the brain responsible for voluntary physical movement is connected by neurons to all parts of the cortex, the area of the brain responsible for higher order thinking. Nearly 80 studies have suggested a strong link between the movement and memory, spatial perception, language, attention, emotion, nonverbal cues, and decision-making (Jensen, 1998).

9.PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CREATES GREATER SYNAPTIC CONNECTIONS

William Greenough showed how rats that exercised in enriched environments had a greater number of synaptic connections. Exercise improves brain functioning in the following areas: the cerebellum, the basal ganglia, hippocampus or the corpsus callosum.

10. BRAIN ACTIVITY GROWS NEW CELLS (Van Praag 1999)

Aerobic exercise benefits us in many ways. One of hem is that we release endorphins, the class of neurotransmitter that relax us into a state of cortical alertness and reduce the symptoms of depression.

Others effect of exercise are: exercise tends to raise levels of glucose, serotonin, epinephrine and dopamine, chemicals that at elevated levels are to known to inhibit hunger and balance behavior .

11.AEROBIC FITNESS AIDS COGNITION

Aerobic activity not only increases blood flow to the brain but also speeds recall and reasoning skills (Van Boxtel 1996)

12.EXERCISE TRIGGERS BDNF

Breast Cancer and Exercise. Englewood Hospital funds my Pilot exercise program for Breast Cancer patients. Follow Up 6 months after

BREAST CANCER EXERCISE PROGRAM

October is a phenomenal month especially because it raises awareness for one of the most devastating conditions called Breast Cancer and how we as a society we can help in many different ways through research, treatment and recovery. I am still so intrigued by this condition also because my Godfather Dr Miguel Sanchez MD is one of the most important pathologists in the country. He works at Englewood Hospital changing lives every day. I visit him to New Jersey almost every weekend to watch Spanish soccer  and since I am hungry for knowledge I love asking him questions about his incredible work!.I like discussing with him about the condition and how physical activity and exercise can help improve patients mental and physical feel being. That is why when Englewood Hospital offered me to run An individualized Super Body, Super Brain Pilot for Breast Cancer Patients i was thrilled. I did extensive research and started designing an exercise program that will help mainly with energy levels, balancing hormones, recover mobility and improve strength especially conditioning. 6 Months have gone by and I still get emails from the attendees asking me what are the exercises that they need to incorporate to their life. I am now discussing with Englewood Hospital how to make it permanent and start really monitoring improvements in Breast Cancer patients

BREAST CANCER EXERCISE PROGRAM-Michael Gonzalez-Wallace Author of Super Body, Super Brain offers an individualized exercise program tailored to patients with Breast Cancer at Englewood Hospital

BREAST CANCER PROGRAM

1.OVERVIEW

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant(cancer) cells form inthe tissues of the breast. About 1 in 8 women in the United States (12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2012, an estimated 250,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 54,010 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer for more information check this phenomenal website

However  there are clear reasons for hope and full recovery after treatment. Exercise can play a fundamental role in the emotional well being and also fron the physiological point of view of the individual.

It is known Chronic low-grade inflammation is a possible risk factor for cancer that may be modifiable with long-term exercise

BREAST CANCER AND EXERCISE

More and more literature is being published on the effects of exercise on breast cancer patients. According to IDEA Health and Fitness Association Magazine, It is well researched that regular exercise can help prevent breast cancer (Peel et al. 2009). Recently researchers have determined that high levels of IGF -1 often present in sedentary individuals can increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence (Ligibel et al.2008)

As you can see Exercise can really help, the question is what type of exercise and there is where I come in since I have designed a really careful, methodic, safe and effective exercise program that will tackle important health functions such as strength, balance, coordination, sensory, proprioception, emotional and cardiovascular.

I will make sure to post the results and the fascinating program at Englewood Hospital. I am so excited!

Also I wanted to share  one of my recent visits to one of the most important support groups for Breast Cancer: Tennis for life

Hope and resilience. My recent visit to Tennis for life it was life changing. This wonderful organization created by breast cancer survivors offers their members an opportunity to experience a  pure jolt of excitement, resilience, hope and all that practicing your favorite sport, Tennis! They invited me to discuss my recent book: Super Body, Super Brain

Breast cancer is one of the most feared common cancer among American women. The chance of developing breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is beyond the staggering number of 10%.

The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:

About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
About 57,650 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
About 39,520 women will die from breast cancer to see more data click here CANCER.ORG

Janet who is a breast cancer survivor and the program coordinator at Tennis for life expressed her excitement of her new life: “I am preparing for my next Triathlon and when I come to Tennis for Life I  have never felt better in my life”

According to one of the members, Andrea ” There was a point in my life where I needed to go to a support group for breast cancer but not to cry but to move and feel happy about myself and why not practice my favorite sport, tennis?”

According to the National Cancer Institute California researchers have found that strenuous long-term physical activity decreases a woman’s risk of invasive and in situ breast cancer, according to study results published in the February 26, 2007, Archives of Internal Medicine (see the journal abstract).

Michael Gonzalez-WallaceBlank

Hi Brandy and thanks so much for your question.

Yes as you may know C section may play a bigger role than you think since some of the muscles need to get stretched to accommodate the baby. As you may know Yoga workouts and core workouts are important but you need to activate specify muscles around your waist. Those muscles are named the oblique muscles. The muscles need to be strong, activated so when you start dropping body fat you will see how your waist drops significantly.

In other words For best results, combine aerobic exercise with a regular strengthening workout that targets the abdominal muscles.

Here you can find how to activate the obliques

http://superbodysuperbrainblog.wordpr...

However if your body fat tends to accumulate in the lower section of your abdominal you need to do specific exercises to activate the lower abs such as applying some weight resistance on regular abdominal crunches click here to keep reading

Hi there Shai13 and thanks for posting this question!

Topic: Is total Body Weight a good measure of health?

Yes and no. Although you are really close to the lowest recommended weight range you can actually gain few pounds and be healthier in body weight distribution.

Normally when there are recommended weight ranges you should stay in the middle as average. However the good news is that if you are expressing concern is because you want to gain some muscle mass that will help you achieve a more optimal weight.

You are 125lbs or 57kg click here to keep reading

Plank Exercise for beginners and athletes to develop a spectacular core strength from home

Plank Exercise

Plank Exercise is one of the best core exercises that even the New York Times recommended.

Suffer from low back pain or getting that belly shaggy? Well I have the perfect solution for you! The plank exercise with calf raises.

The plank exercise it is one of the most popular exercises and it is one of the most essential ones to gain core strength. It  is a great way to build core strength, endurance in both the abs and back, as well as to gain great strength in the stabilizer muscles.Lie face down on a mat resting on the forearms. Keep your back flat in a complete straight line from head to heels. Both palms should be less than shoulder width apart. You should feel the tension in your abs if whatever reason you feel it in the back or shoulder raise the back in a higher position make it challenging but not uncomfortable. Then Hold that position for 30 seconds then push with your toes back and forth for 15 more seconds this is one set. You should really feel a great muscle tension when doing this movementBeginners: Do it three times with 15 seconds rest between setsIntermediate: Do it 4 times with 5 seconds rest between setsAdvance do it 5 times with no rest between the sets

Want to take your Plank Workout to a different level like a professional athlete or serious core training, try this one!

Brain Fitness in the Midwest: Super Body, Super Brain Minnesota

New York City Personal trainer Michael Gonzalez-Wallace

New York City Personal trainer Michael Gonzalez-Wallace

Just came back from Minnesota! What a beautiful state this time of the year with the fall colors everywhere. It is a great break from the city full of cars and noise and people walking by. I arrived there last Thursday and took some time to walk around the city of St Paul and get ready for my meeting on the following day. The first one was with one of the best companies in the country, General Mills. I meet with the Multicultural department and Publisher of “Que Rica Vida” where I am being featured on how to live a healthy life.

I love this Magazine because it tries to empower the hispanic population that are growing up with a huge obesity epidemic so the better informed they are the better and I was flattered and honored to be part of it. You can read it online at Quericavida.com.  The meeting was extremely productive and we are in conversations to how inspire the Latino community to follow healthy choices and how to incorporate Super Body, Super Brain exercises.

Then I went to have a meeting I was really excited about: One of the best schools in Autism in Minnesota. As many of you know by now I am a huge believer how specific brain body exercises can be applied and implemented to people with specific conditions like Autism. I am very excited that the School in Minnesota wants to move forward and want to have Super Body, Super Brain Autism. I am developing a program for High functioning and Low functioning Autism here you can watch me working with a phenomenal kid with severe Autism.

Then after my meeting with the School of Autism I went to the clinic where I was awarded the first grant for my program and Parkinson disease: Super Body, Super Brain Parkinson. The Capistrant Clinic is an innovative center specializing in Parkinson and exercise.  I have worked extremely hard in this program for early and intermediate Parkinson. Almost one year after they are running my program and getting really excited with the results. Here you can read more about my program and the clinic.

Then i was invited by the Mexican Consul in Minneapolis to a great fashion Show organized by several Mexican fashion designers. I have never been invited to a fashion show so I decided to take this picture ha ha

And after all those great meeting I started getting ready for the great event of the weekend: “La Familia” organized by Richard Aguilar and owner of Aguilar Productions. It is one of the largest meetings for Hispanics in the midwest and hundreds of families stopped by in my stand and tried some of my exercises and listened to my health advise.

As you can see it was a great trip and I am really excited to announce that due to all the demand for my program in several centers I am opening a center Super Body, Super Brain Minnesota where schools, centers, privates and organizations will be able to access my program share it with everyone.

High Metabolic workouts are good for your brain and your body

High metabolic workouts are  for everyone

Short workouts or better snacks of workouts can not only accelerate your metabolism but also have a great impact in your fitness level and prepare you to increase longevity. However if you train too hard for too long it may produce the opposite effects. Short workouts are like food you want to eat the right amount not too much not too little.

The right intensity will deliver you the best results in the least amount of time. As many of you know by now by following my exercises of my program Super Body, Super Brain you have noticed that there is a trick, a regular bicep curl now becomes more challenging since you are adding a sequential semi squat finishing in a balance position will raising the heels. Maybe you are asking why? Well I wanted to deliver you the best possible exercise program and the latest in exercise science is how whole body movements are much more efficient that single isolated ones. Guess what you need to think and your brain for my workout, thats why is called   Super Body, Super Brain. The movements are considered the umbrella of the High Metabolic Workouts.

Defining Metabolic Training

Generally speaking, metabolic training is an exercise program whereby you complete both compound and structural exercises one after another with a minimal amount of rest in between. The result of such a quick succession of metabolic exercises is that your metabolic rate, or metabolism, is accelerated and your body burns calories more efficiently. The effects are clear: not only you are targeting the muscle you are working (biceps) but also different muscles in your body and eventually your heart and your brain.

Here i wanted to show my High Metabolic training i do at home, do it with me…it only takes three minutes!

High Metabolic training

Sequence of my High Metabolic Workout (you can find more movements in my book Super Body, Super Brain”

Ideally this sequence should be done with an overload that is considered not too high or not too low, in my case there are 12.5 lbs

Opposite Bicep Curl followed by tapping with Bicep curl followed by Bicep curl jacks

Opposite Shoulder lateral raise followed by tapping with Shoulder raises followed by Shoulder raise jacks

Opposite Upper Back followed by tapping with Upper Back followed by Upper Back jacks

Opposite Triceps extension followed by tapping with Triceps extension followed by Triceps extension  jacks

The result is that you achieve better fitness results in a shorter period of time due to the fact that your body will continue to burn calories for up to 72 after the workout is over.

Finally and not less important many of you probably are asking what happens with our brain? When we perform some of the high metabolic workout like mine in  Super Body, Super Brain you would realize an increase of blood flow to your brain increasing not only the brain activity but the blood circulation leading to an increase of a protein between nerve cells called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)

EXAMPLE OF A HIGH METABOLIC EXERCISE

Tips to Gain weight

Tips to Gain weight

Im 23 years old..my height is 5″8 but my weight is 57kg..is this fine n if nt dan wot shud i do to gain weight??

Hi there Shai13 and thanks for posting this question! ( I almost needed a translator)!

You are 125lbs or 57kg

Results:
According to your height of 5′ 8″ your ideal healthy weight is 147 pounds. Your recommended weight range is between 131 and 164 pounds.

This was calculated using Hamwi formula, a simple formula commonly used by many clinicians.

These are recommended weights. Talk with your doctor about what weight is best for you and before undertaking any new diet or exercise programs.

You can learn more about BMI and see what it is for your current weight by checking out our Body Mass calculator.

http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/c...

Steps to Gain weight:

Metabolism: Eat more Frequently

If you have a small appetite, try to eat more frequently and add “Good calories”  For example, add mixed almonds to your breakfast or as a snack . Some protein shakes can help you as well to increase your weight in a safe way. This increases your fat intake and calories without increasing the volume of the food you consume.

You need to select The Right Foods

Do not consume foods that are high in saturated fat, calories and sugar increasing the risk on your arteries and organs. Include more fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meats in every meal.

8 Ethics of Life for greater happiness, fulfillness and achievement

ETHICS OF LIFE

8 Ethics of Life by Michael Gonzalez-Wallace

Before you speak – Listen

Listening it is one of the most important features in our social world. How many times we just speak without listening. Once we listen we have gathered all the necessary information and we can build a better message.

Before you spend-Earn

In United States we know about that problem. Consumption represents over 66% of all the total  spending representing sometimes problems for our economy since many people rely on debt in order to keep their standard of living so that is why is necessary to earn before you spend and to ask yourself: Do I really need this item before busying it?

Before you become a robot Learn!

How many times we feel that our lives are like robots: we wake up, go to work do the same work and come back home go to sleep and do it all over again? Well they key is Learning. Learning fires synapses in our brain, makes us feel alive producing a sense of well being and contentment that otherwise we would never feel. Learn anything: history: Why the ROman EMpire fell? Why the Economy is not recovering or did our founding fathers believed in religion or not?

Before you Quit- Try and not give up

Quitting is not an option. This was a sentence that I grew up my whole life. Before you quit you should try again and never give up. Things have not worked out lately? Well try a different option, a new strategy but also in terms of our health you need to keep consistency and structure if you want to achieve wonderful health goals.

Before you complain: Do something

I hate when people just complain for nothing. However what really upsets me is when people complain and they do not do anything about it, they just love the sake of complaining like is a new sport. Is there something you don’t like or you are complaining about? Just do something don’t stay static take a bold approach and do something.

Before you plan for the future: Live the present

I recently got this great book called Happier by Harvard Professor  Tal Ben Shahar  where he explains who many people put off in the back burner be happier if they achieve some sort of level of success. For example I will be happy if i get married or i will be happy if i make a million or if i finish COllege. According to the Professor and I agree we need to enjoy our journey much more and live in the present before we sabotage our own level of happiness for the present and the future.

Before you get stressed: Exercise and Meditate

I know so many people that will get stressed and do nothing about it. Either complain or suddenly become ill. I think that if you are feeling under the weather and experience that you are suffering stress or anxiety why not try to exercise and meditate? After all the latest study is showing how exercise and meditation are the two best remedies against stress

Anxiety reduction following exercise and meditation

Eat Healthy!

12 of the best foods for your body and brain by Michael Gonzalez-Wallace

12 of the best foods for your body and brain by Michael Gonzalez-Wallace

Before you Die: Live!

In all the previous ethics of life they get summarized in the last one! If you don’t follow the ones before you may have problems Living a fulfilled life. Life is precious and exciting full of surprises, disappointments and excitements but we need to live in the moment making sure that we give our best for the best challenge of all: Living a Happy Life

Fall Tips to get back to School and Back into Shape, your family wants you to be healthy and live longer

Great News! The Midwest is calling me again. Not sure if it is karma or my future the Midwest is calling me again. This time to write a monthly contribution for the largest bilingual publication in the Midwest specifically, Minnesota. As many of you know my Mom was born in St Paul, Minnesota and I used to visit quite frequently when i was youngster and 5 years ago The Minnesota Governor then and former presidential candidate, Tim Pawlenty and the Mayor of St Paul, Chris Coleman honored me with “The Fitness Excellence Award”. There I was extremely excited when they asked me to contribute with a regular monthly column about exercise, fitness and nutrition for their readers.

In my first article I am writing on how when we come back from Summer it is a great opportunity to start a health plan to improve our physical condition and mental well being cause remember that our body deteriorates at a faster pace if we do not move or if we do not exercise or move.
